River rafting offers a wil-derness experience as well as the adventure of a lifetime. A river rafting trip can be enjoyed by the whole family, couples or solo travelers. There are a lot of things to look at when choosing the perfect river rafting journey.

Here are some things you should consider when choosing a trip: the length of time you have, the in-tensity of whitewater you want to experience, and the time of year that is best for you.

MILEAGE CHARTTO MOAB, UTAH

is where most of our trips begin. Famously nick-named the “Adventure Cap-ital of the World”, Moab offers National Parks, gor-geous resorts, amazing scenery and just about ev-ery kind of outdoor adven-ture known on land and river.

Vernal, Utah is where we begin our Dinosaur Nation-al Monument trips. Higher in Elevation than Moab, Vernal tends to be cooler, and is a ‘jumping off’ town for fly fishing and boating in Flaming Gorge.

GettinG there: Salt Lake International Airport (SLC) is a 4-hour drive away. Rental cars are available.

Grand Junction, Colorado airport (GJT) is a 2-hour drive away. Rental cars are available.

Moab, UT airport (CNY) has limited commercial flights daily. Enterprise car rental available.

The Colorado River is one of the most famous, exciting and beautiful rivers in the world. This magnificent river runs through six national parks and recreation areas.

Vacations on this prized river offer a combination of outstanding scenery, majestic wildlife, exhilarating rapids and a chance to truly escape.

Sheri Griffith Expeditions hosts trips in two scenic canyons of the Colorado River: Cataract Canyon, in Canyon-lands National Park, and Westwater Canyon, a proposed Wild and Scenic River.

CATARACT CANYON The Colorado River divides Canyon-lands National Park in half. This is a spectacular, remote wilderness with 2000 foot red rock cliffs, 28+ fun and exciting rapids and national park qual-ity hikes.

BY OAR BOAT:The oarboat is the traditional raft on the Colorado River and is “up close and personal” with the river and its natural power.

BY MOTORIzED J-RIGThis larger more stable raft, maneu-vered by a quiet outboard motor, al-lows you to experience Cataract Can-yon on a shorter timeframe.

WILD WESTWATER CANYONThis stretch of the river offers an ideal balance of mellow bird watching, ex-hilarating whitewater rafting and per-fect camping. Otters, deer and eagles are not rare in this dessert oasis.

“Just wanted to let you all know that we had a fantastic time on our raft trip. Everything ran flawlessly and we had a wonderful, memorable experience. You guys made the planning easy and put together a great itinerary. In all of my six trips with Sheri Griffith I’ve never had a bad experience – a real testament to the organization. Thanks again for everything.”— John Orr

The Sights of Cataract Canyon trip through Canyonlands National Park is our pre-mier trip that offers great whitewater, spectacular hikes and beauty found only on the Colorado River. See red rock spires that tower 2000 ft. above the river. Explore 1000 year old Native American petroglyphs and granaries found around every bend in the river.

The whitewater in May and June is a thrill seeker’s dream. The waves are large and the ride is very exciting. In July and August the whitewater is still fun but not as big. The later trips are great for those that want to enjoy the other great parts of riv-er rafting: swimming, large sandy beaches, more time in camp for fun outdoor games such as bocce and horseshoes.

Explore some of the lost can-yons of Cataract Canyon as we motor off Lake Powell. The trip concludes with a flight back over Canyonlands National Park.

7-Day Canyonlands hiker’s SpecialIf you’re looking for the com-

plete ESCAPE vacation, then the 7-day Canyonlands Hiker’s Spe-cial is for YOU. This one of a kind river journey focuses on hiking the hidden wonders of the Green and-Colorado Rivers. The highlight of the trip is the hike to the top of the famous Dolls House in the Heart of Canyonlands National Park.

If you are intrigued by the beauties of Cataract Canyon and Canyonlands National Park, yet not an adrenaline junkie, our Highlights of Cataract Canyon by Motorized J-Rig is for you! This trip allows those that don’t want too much whitewater to ride on a motorized pontoon “J-rig” which is larger and more stable than oarboats.

The first few days we hike to ancient Native American ruins and petroglyphs, and marvel at the red rock vistas of Canyonlands National Park. We have time for swimming and relaxing in the afternoon and evening.

After the Confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers we meet the be-ginning of the whitewater. For the next 20 miles we navigate through rapids with names like North Seas, Mile Long, and the Big Drops. Dur-ing the spring runoff these rapids can be some of the largest and most powerful on the Colorado River. In late summer and fall the river drops and the rapids are more moderate, yet still exciting.

On the last day we view 2000 foot cliffs and explore some of the canyons of Lake Powell. The trip wraps up with a scenic flight back to Moab over the canyon you have come to love.

NOTE: Due to lower water levels in July and August, this trip may be run with an oarboat with a smaller motor.

Westwater Canyon, one of the last canyons of the Colorado Plateau to be explored, contains many wonders, from the river otter and eagles that make the canyon their home to the miner’s cabin and the Western Rio Grand railroad. The canyon walls are spectacu-lar with 1.7 Billion year old black rock rising out of the river and topped 1200 feet above the water by burning red sandstone cliffs. Westwater’s history is filled with tales of those who passed this way, proven by Native American writings hidden on canyon walls and abandoned Miner’s cabins and out-law caves.

The Wild Westwater Canyon adventure places you in the midst of dramatic desert landscapes. There are two sections to Westwater Can-yon with great contrast between the serene solitude of the upper can-yon’s sandstone walls and the sur-real black granite and impressive rapids of the lower canyon.

This stretch of the Colorado River is free flowing, resulting in a variety of water levels through-out the rafting season. The narrow gorge of Westwater Canyon offers wonderful and rapids during the en-tire rafting season. Fun rapids with names like Sock-It-To-Me, Skull and Last Chance as you traverse this wild and scenic canyon.

COLORADORIVER

The Yampa River is a unique river in the American West because it is the last free-flowing river in the entire Colorado River drainage. The scenery is dramatic and quite varied as 2000 feet of white sandstone walls grow quickly around you. In May, melting snow from the Rocky Mountains swells in the narrow gorge creating unbridled and fun rapids.

The Yampa River is only navigable in May and June each summer. Limited visita-tion makes this stretch of river one of the most isolated and remote expeditions we offer. Sightings of Big Horn Sheep, Eagles, Hawks, Peregrine Falcons and even the oc-casional Moose are almost a daily experience.

Take time to explore something different each day: hike up side canyons to see 1000 year old Native American artwork or to the water-falls up Jones’ Hole or to the hermit Pat Lynch’s hideout in Echo Park. Traverse deceptively named rapids such as Moonshine, Five Springs, Warm Springs and TeePee, and en-joy star filled skies every night.

Because there is limited access to the Yampa River few people have the opportunity to explore this area. This trip books quickly.

The Green River is the perfect family river trip with warm water for swimming, big sandy beaches for playing and easy to moderate water for excitement. This stretch of the Green River has been our premier family trip for 25 Years. It offers multi-generational families an opportunity to bond in the great outdoors.

This trip is planned entirely for families. We travel at a family’s pace, hand pick family friendly guides and offer family friendly meals. We take along sand toys for amusement. This hidden jewel of the American West has outlaw hideouts, homesteads, Indian Ru-ins, and sandy beaches shaded by ancient cottonwood trees. There are over 50 exciting rapids with big roll-ing waves that get bigger each day.

The Perfect Family Vacation!Playful rapids, lots of water fun, sandy beaches for sandcastles, nature hikes for learning, and marshmallows for roasting are just a few of the activi-ties lined up for your family vacation. Camp on beautiful beaches shaded by cottonwood trees, hike to old outlaw hideouts and glimpse shy wildlife. Our “Kid Guide” offers games, fun-to learn outdoor skills, and nature walks. Parents can join in or grab a little private time for themselves.

The Gates of Lodore is an absolute paradise with few people, 1000 foot cliffs and wildlife around every bend. The entrance to this Green River adventure truly looks like you’re entering a giant red rock fortress as the canyon walls shoot hundreds of feet up from the valley floor. The trip has much more to offer than just gorgeous scenery; the canyon is filled with fun rapids every day, waterfall hikes and a native herd of big horn sheep that can be seen on most trips.

The Gates of Lodore Canyon contains the first major set of rap-ids encountered by John Wesley Powell and his men on their 1869 expedition. The river is narrow and fast paced. We run the rapids in paddleboats, inflatable kayaks and oarboats. The scenery is an amaz-ing combination of Rocky Moun-tain forest tapering into the rug-ged beauty of the desert. Abundant wildlife including deer, bighorn sheep, eagles, trout and hawks can be seen around every bend.

We purposely travel slowly, about 10-15 miles per day, so we have ample time to explore the can-yons and take in the surrounding nature and its wildlife. The camps are well maintained which makes for easy and relaxing camping.

Our Expeditions in Lux-ury trips are the only trips of their kind on the Colorado River. From the oversized tents, linen covered tables and gourmet meals prepared by your chef to the mind-boggling vistas and spectacular sunsets of the west; the contrast between the rugged nature of the river and the eve-ning comforts of your personal bungalow is the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors.

Our camps are on beautiful sandy beaches. Spend your days rafting through the pristine Colorado River canyons; as early evening draws near, pull up to a private beach that will be quickly transformed into your river hotel. While the camp staff finishes setting up your tents,

our private river chef begins the evening’s dining presentation. Sleep-ing quarters are oversized tents which house comfy cot beds, tables and night lights. Enjoy a cool beverage on the riverbank in comfy chairs. After coffee and breakfast, the camp attendants will take down the camp and off we’ll go on the day’s adventure. This adventure pro-vides full enjoyment of the beautiful outdoors while wrapped in Lux-ury. Indulge.

This trip includes two nights at The Gonzo Inn, in Moab, Utah. For more information, visit:

This means you don’t have to organize anything and can just enjoy the trip.

The more people you bring, the cheaper your trip. If you have between 10 and 18 members in your party, everyone gets a 5% discount with the group leader receiving a 50% discount. For groups of 19 or more everyone receives a 10% discount and the group leader goes FREE.

The Armada: Different types of rafts offer different types of experiences.Depending on water levels, You choose whether you want 1) Total involvement (paddleboats and inflatable kayaks),2) Close and personal with the rapids (oarboats) or 3) High and a little dryer (J-rigs). We offer the most choices with the experience to back them up. Raft types are listed under each trip.

OARBOATS: inflatable rafts (approx. 16–18 feet in length) with guides that maneuver them with a set of oars secured to a frame in the middle of the raft. This is considered to be a more stable craft than a paddleboat

pADDLEBOATS: These are inflatable rafts (approx. 16 ft. in length) manned by guests and their paddles. A guide gives instruction and navigates from the back of each boat. Everyone must participate to maneuver the raft.

J-RIG RAFTS: These 23 ft. rafts are motorized and move faster down river. They are much larger than other rafts and are considered to be the most stable. (only used on our Cataract Canyon 3 and 4 day trips.)

INFLATABLE KAYAKS: Small inflatable rafts, manned by 1 or 2 people with their double-bladed pad-dles. There are no guides in these crafts, Kayakers follow instructions from guides in nearby kayaks or rafts.
