messaGe fRom Pat Mullin and Lee Friedman

There are few things as critically important to our success – individually and collectively – as college attainment. The reality is that the number of jobs being created in our region annually requiring a postsecondary education grows at a rate that significantly outpaces the number of students graduating from college with the training to fill them. The future health of our community depends on our ability to meet the demand for talent.

Over the last 12 months, the urgency of this issue caused the organization to reflect on the impact it has on the community. And so, after careful consideration, we decided to change the name of the organization from Cleveland Scholarship Programs to a name that more accurately reflects the important work that we do – College Now Greater Cleveland.

Our efforts have received tremendous support from the community – from individuals as well as business, education, non-profit and government entities that realize that increasing college attainment isn’t just an education issue – it’s an issue that has the potential to affect Greater Cleveland’s ability to successfully compete in the global economy.

The collaborative partnerships we’ve forged over the last 12 months demonstrate recognition in our community that no one organization can tackle the issue of college attainment on its own. It takes the entire community to get students to and through College Now.

We are proud of the work we’ve done in the last 45 years, and we are excited about the work we will do in the next 45. We thank you for your partnership, and we look forward to continuing to work side by side with you to increase college attainment in Greater Cleveland.

Sincerely,

Patrick S. Mullin Lee Friedman Chair, Board of Directors Chief Executive Officer

ColleGe NoW aT a GlaNCe: Developing Tomorrow’s Talent Today

College Now’s impact is apparent across the region as well as in the individual life of each and every one of our students.

Transforming Lives

College Now helps students reach their full potential through postsecondary education. Many are from low-income households and are first-generation college students. Without College Now, many never would attend college and graduate career-ready.

• We assist over 20,000 students in a school year.

• $3.5 million – amount of scholarships awarded (includes services to scholarship recipients).

• For a graduating senior, a $500 investment in advising services & financial aid counseling results in $60,000 per student in financial aid over 4 years of college.

• This year on college campuses, over 10,000 students who received College Now services have benefitted from more than $150 million in financial aid.

• Our students have a 91% freshman year to sophomore year retention rate, compared to 58% nationally for low-income students.

• Our students are twice as likely to graduate from college as other low-income college students.

Creating Economic Growth

Our commitment to create a college-going culture is an investment in the economic growth and vitality of Greater Cleveland. We are developing an educated talent pool of future professionals, whose contributions will attract new employers and grow businesses, making our region more competitive in the global economy.

• By 2018, 57% of Ohio’s jobs will require postsecondary education. We will not be prepared to meet the need for an educated workforce of that size unless we increase college attainment.

• An individual’s lifetime earnings with a bachelor’s degree are nearly $1 million more than lifetime earnings with a high school diploma.

• An increase of 1% in Northeast Ohio college graduates would result in a $2.8 billion economic boost to the region (CEO’s for Cities).

Students and Alumni

After college, our alumni go on to have rewarding careers and strengthen our community. College Now students and alumni have become educators, CEOs, social workers, engineers, councilmen, playwrights and entrepreneurs. They make Greater Cleveland a better place to live, work and play.

“My parents’ support and love helped me to enroll at Ohio State

University. College Now Greater Cleveland ensured that I stayed

and graduated, and for that I will be forever grateful.”

- Michael R. White, former Mayor, City of Cleveland; one of College Now’s first scholarship recipients

Getting Ready for College Now

In order to succeed in completing their degree, students must be college-ready when they get to campus. But what does it mean to be college-ready?

College-ready is the level of preparation a student needs to be able to enroll and succeed in college-level courses without having to take remedial coursework. Making sure that Greater Cleveland students are graduating from high school college-ready is a big part of what we do at College Now. Here are some benchmarks for making sure your student is college-ready:

Pre-K – 5th Grade

• Set an expectation that your student will attend college

• Encourage your student to think about what he/she wants to be when he/she grows up

• Encourage your student to have fun in school and do his/her best

• Read to your student and encourage them to read for themselves

6th – 8th Grade

• Ensure your student has a quiet place to study for at least an hour each day

• Make sure your student gets involved in school and/or community-based activities

• Explore different career options with your student

• Have your student take the Explore Test (ACT’s 9th and 10th grade college readiness assessment)

9th Grade

• Make sure your student is enrolled in college prep classes (English, Algebra, Social Studies, Foreign Language, Science)

• Encourage your student to develop leadership skills through extra-curricular activities

• Have your student look into summer enrichment programs

• Establish a good relationship with the school counselor

10th Grade – Continue to do the things listed for 9th grade PLUS

• Ensure your student registers for and takes the PSAT and the PLAN (ACT’s 10th grade college readiness assessment)

• Encourage your student to participate in career shadowing

• Confirm that your student has passed all sections of the OGT (Ohio Graduation Test)

11th Grade – Continue to do the things listed for 9th and 10th grade PLUS

• Make sure your student registers for and takes/retakes the SAT and ACT and sends the results to his/her top schools

• Research and visit colleges with your student

• Make sure your student has met with the College Now advisor in his/her school

12th Grade – Continue to do the things listed for 9th – 11th grade PLUS

• Have your student retake the SAT and ACT

• Continue to research and visit colleges with your student

• Encourage your student to complete his/her college applications before Thanksgiving

• Make sure your student is meeting with his/her College Now advisor

• Complete the FAFSA to ensure your student receives all possible financial aid

• Research and apply for scholarships

A high school diploma is no longer adequate preparation for a student to be successful in a career and in life. We need to make sure that students are graduating from high school and enrolling in a postsecondary degree program.

“There are many worthwhile charities, but one of the things

that separates College Now Greater Cleveland from some

of the others is the “happy ending”. To get a phone call

from a student who excitedly tells you he or she is about

to graduate is one of the greatest feelings in the world. To

see that student come back to Northeast Ohio and help our

community grow and prosper is even greater. Knowing that

the College Now student is also setting an example for his

younger siblings is icing on the cake.”

- Jimmy Malone, radio personality, WMJI; College Now Board Member; funder, the Malone Scholarship Fund

ColleGe NoW: A Resource for the Community

Many adults in our community have never had the opportunity to go to college. To significantly increase college attainment in Greater Cleveland, we need to make sure that these adults who have never gone to college–and those who have started but never finished– complete their degrees.

College Now offers the same college access advising

and financial aid counseling that we provide in the

schools in its Resource Center in Downtown Cleveland.

About 1,500 adult learners, high school students and

families rely on the convenience and accessibility of

the College Now Resource Center each year. They can

work with advisors and access materials and resources

to research colleges and scholarship opportunities,

explore career paths, and navigate the college access

and financial aid processes. College Now is one of the

only access organizations in Ohio that focuses on adult

success in college.

College Now’s community outreach is critical to its

mission of increasing college attainment in Northeast

Ohio. It isn’t enough to reach students in schools.

We have to reinforce the message throughout the

community and provide the necessary resources

to students and families throughout the region –

wherever they may be. College Now is able to be

a resource for the community through its Resource

Center and its many strategic partnerships. Last

year, College Now presented to over 70 groups

throughout the community, reaching an additional

2,000 people.

A great example of College Now’s community

outreach is the Cleveland Goes to College Series,

a partnership between College Now, the City of

Cleveland, the Cleveland Metropolitan School

District, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland and

the Cleveland Public Library. The 4-part workshop

series, funded by MyCom, brought college access

and financial aid information to students at their local

recreation centers and library branches.

For more information about the College Now Resource

Center and our community outreach initiatives, please

visit us in person on the ground floor of 200 Public

Square or call (216) 241-5587. The College Now

Resource Center is open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday

through Friday and by appointment on Saturday.

“Getting a college education is not only important for me, but it should be

for others as well because it helps to ensure a successful future. College has

already helped me make my transition into adulthood and it continues to

prepare me for all of the ups and downs that life has to bring. I have made

friendships that will last a lifetime, involved myself in new activities, and

broadened my education. With the help of my College Now/Jimmy Malone

scholarship, I have become the first person in my family to attend college, but

not just any college, my dream college, The Ohio State University!”
