At red/blue we talk about the intersectionbetween public policy and our Christianfaith. In each session we will wrestle withthe biblical texts that undergird each topic. And we do mean wrestle — there are noeasy answers here!In our first class this fall, we will talk abouta foundational discussion that is unspokenin our political discussions—the differencebetween a “right” and a “privilege.” Howwe assign “rights” or “privileges” guides agreat deal of our rhetoric. For instance, ishealth care a right or a privilege? Is publiceducation a right or a privilege? How arewe as Christians to think about rights andprivileges? In our second class we will talk about theboundaries between personal responsibili-ty and community responsibility. Our dis-cussion will center on two seeminglydivergent biblical directives: “feed andclothe the poor” (Matt 25) and “if youdon’t work –you don’t eat” (2 Thes 3:10)In our third class we will talk about publicand private debt. The scriptures speak di-rectly to debt. But does the complexity ofthe capitalist system change the way weshould think about debt? When we come to red/blue, we know thatif there was a simple way to answer thesequestions, we’d have no red/blue! Bringyour faith, bring your brain, come tored/blue — november 2nd, 16th, 30th .
