Our History
Looking back, seeing the futureMenomonie derives its name from the native word for “wild rice people.” Tradition says the name was proposed to honor the area’s first people by Captain William Wilson, the community’s first mayor and a principal in the lumber company around which the city grew. The city was built along a marshy area ideal for growing wild rice – today’s Lake Menomin.
The earliest residents were Paleo-Indians and later Indians of the Middle to Late Woodland Periods whose burial mounds still exist near the Red Cedar River; Santee Dakota and the Ojibwe followed. The arrival of European explorers, fur traders and settlers changed the Indian’s lives forever. In 1785, fur trader Jean Baptiste Perrault established the first trading post along the Red Cedar River.
In 1822, Hardin Perkins built a dam and mill on a stream today known as Wilson Creek. The mill changed hands a number of times. By 1870, the company controlled the Red Cedar River valley and incorporated as Knapp, Stout & Company in 1878. Menomonie became a major trading site. At its height, the company employed more than 2,000 men locally and had become the largest lumber and milling operation in the world.
These lumber barons left lasting marks on the area. The names Wilson, Tainter, Knapp, and Stout are today associated with many of Menomonie’s buildings, streets, and institutions. While these men reaped fortunes from the forests, they greatly contributed to the welfare of the area.
They established the first schools in Dunn and Barron counties. Wilson and Knapp contributed heavily to churches. Tainter built a civic center as a memorial to his daughter Mabel.
James Huff Stout, Henry’s son, funded a variety of civic projects. His best-known endeavor, the Stout Manual Training
School, opened in Menomonie in 1891 and integrated manual training and domestic science into the public school curriculum from kindergarten through high school. Demand for teachers of these disciplines grew and teacher training soon became the institution’s main focus. After Stout’s death, the state assumed responsibility for what today is UW-Stout, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University.
In the mid-1890s, genius Harry Miller worked in a local machine shop. Among his spare-time inventions were a four-cylinder gasoline outboard motor and a bicycle on which he mounted a one-cylinder engine – an early motorcycle. By the turn of the century, Miller was in Los Angeles designing engines for inboard racing boats and airplanes, but he made his reputation designing race cars. A Miller engine powered the 1922 winner of the Indianapolis 500, creating a demand for his cars through the 1920s. Miller cars won 73 of the 92 major U.S. races from 1922 - 1929. So strong were the engines that 27 of 33 starting positions in the 1929 Indy 500 were Miller-powered. Success continued through the 1930s, and today Miller is considered the greatest creative figure in the history of the American race car. Miller’s engines and cars dominated American racing for almost half a century.
Menomonie continues to be a progressive community, proud of its colorful past and bright future.

Caddie Woodlawn Historical Park In 1857 John and Harriet Woodhouse and their five children moved from the relative comforts of Boston to 160 acres of rugged Dunn County wilderness. One of the children, Caroline Augusta, inspired “Caddie Woodlawn” in a book written by her granddaughter, Carol Ryrie Brink. The book won the 1935 Newbery Medal for children’s literature. In 1970, the Dunn County Historical Society organized and created the Caddie Woodlawn Historical Park. The family’s actual house has been moved to the park from a nearby farm. The wayside includes a covered picnic area, fresh water, and restrooms. Hours: open during daylight hours spring through fall. The park and wayside is located nine miles south of Menomonie on Hwy 25.

If you’re looking for a place to get lost and escape the big city pace while enjoying a variety of shops and eateries, you’ve just discovered the Menomonie area. In some of our more remote locations, you may be joined by an eagle taking off from a nearby pine or a whitetail deer as it peers from the brush. And the only sounds are the rush of the water and distant laughter of youth floating the river on inner tubes.
Got a boat? The county maintains 16 parks, nine of them with river or lake boat access, and the City of Menomonie has five boat landings on Lake Menomin and the Red Cedar River.
Got a snowmobile? The county has 300 miles of groomed and marked trails. Call the snowmobile hotline to see if the trails are open, (715) 664-SNOW or visit www.dunncountysnow.com.
Got skis? In the winter, cross-country skiing is the primary use of the Red Cedar Trail (15 miles) and Hoffman Hills Recreation Area (9.1 miles).
Got snowboards? The Dunn County Recreation Park is home to the newly developed Dunn County Snow Park. A dedicated group of volunteers cleared the way and built the park for everyone to enjoy.
Got skates? Menomonie Youth Hockey Association provides public skating times at their rink in the Dunn County Recreation Park, and the city and villages flood temporary ice rinks when weather allows. For city rink information, call (715) 235-9958, or the Menomonie Recreation Department at (715) 232-1197.
Thrill of the hunt…and fish In the fall, over 14,000 acres of public wildlife and natural areas are open for public hunting. Whispering Emerald Ridge in Menomonie offers 380 acres of managed habitat divided into seven hunting fields plus two training fields. Hunt the Flight Conditioned Manchurian Cross and the Rare Trophy Reeves Pheasant. Also enjoy Sporting Clays, the fastest growing of all the shotgun sports.
Whispering Emerald Ridge Game Farm www.whisperingemeraldridge.com (715) 233-1281.
The Menomonie Shooting Range is open to the public for the safe enjoyment of rifle and pistol shooting. It is managed by members of the Dunn County Fish and Game and the Menomonie Rifle and Pistol Club through an agreement with the Dunn County Facilities Department. Targets at distances up to 300 yards are available. A range supervisor must be present at the range to be open. The range is located at E6007 510th Avenue east of Menomonie. A location map, range calendar and hours of operation can be found at www.menomonierifleandpistolclub.org, or hours by calling (715) 664-6114. The county also has 3,500 acres of lake fishing: northern pike, walleye, large and small mouth bass, and pan fish, with approximately 160 miles of trout streams. For more information: Wisconsin Dept of Natural Resources, www.dnr.wi.gov (715) 232-1519 or (715) 232-1517. Hit the Red Cedar Trail A few miles from I-94, you’ll find the Red Cedar State Trail. The river is full of wildlife and is the ideal setting for tubing, canoeing, kayaking, biking, or hiking. Some call it Wisconsin’s greatest trail, because it is one of the least disturbed in terms of crossways and street interruptions.

Bicycle Festival returns to Menomonie June 18, 2011
The organizers of the Nature Valley Bicycle Festival have selected Menomonie, Wis. again as the host site for Stage 5 of the 2011 Professional Bicycle Race
scheduled for June 18, 2011. This is an exciting event for the City of Menomonie, Dunn County and West Central Wisconsin. This professional bicycling stage race, in its 12th year of competition, crossed the state line in 2010 to race in Menomonie for the first time. The event went so well, it returns again for a second year to Wisconsin, specifically Dunn County to experience real hills.
The Nature Valley Grand Prix Bicycle Festival has five host cities (St Paul, Cannon Falls, Minneapolis, Menomonie and Stillwater) that each host a stage of the bicycle race over five consecutive days. Each race brings a national/world spotlight on the host community plus over 200 professional cyclists, both men and women professionals, and thousands of fans and bicycling enthusiasts. This is a great opportunity to put our community on the cycling destination map.
In addition to professional bicycle racing, the festival hosts many family activities. Stunt Riders thrill spectators with their high flying acrobatics on wheels. A Kid’s Fun Race, free to all participants, will be held for kids 12 and under. The Wheaties Fan Zone features information and activities about professional bicycle racing. An expo area consists of booths for local and regional businesses to offer cycling gear and other goods and services.
“Menomonie is filled with area residents who love cycling and we are thrilled to have the Nature Valley Grand Prix to the city for the second year”, said Lisa Montgomery, CEO of the Greater Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center. “ The Nature Valley Bicycle Festival is one of the premier cycling events in the country. We look forward to hosting what will become another memorable race for the cyclists as well as everyone who attends.”
Details about the race course, including schedule, routes, parking, volunteer opportunities and other specifics for the Menomonie Road Race can be found at www.naturevalleybicyclefestival.com.
New this year to the Nature Valley Festival will be the addition of Gran Fondo and Spectator Rides. Two Gran Fondo rides will challenge fit cyclists to pre-ride the same course the pros ride later in the day. Three spectator rides are available for families and recreational riders to get them out on the course to viewing spots ahead of the pros and return to Menomonie for the exhilarating finishing circuits.
About The Festival & RaceThe Midwest Bicycle Festival is one of the nation’s top celebrations of bicycle culture. The Festival’s Nature Valley Grand Prix is the premier stage race on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar. The Midwest Bicycle Festival is a volunteer-run event, with all proceeds donated to Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, the festival’s benefiting charity. Disc Golf This is a big year for Menomonie disc golf. Area courses will be featured in the Wisconsin Amateur Disc Golf Championships held on April 16 – 17, 2011. Six local courses are dedicated to this growing sport:
Brickyard Disc Golf Course is short and technical, you will need your putters to score low. Lamb’s Creek at the Pioneer is short, technical, and challenging with a few holes over water, terrain is quite steep. For a relaxed round, Wakanda Disc Golf is a great public park to rip a few drives, 18 holes, longer. Menomonie Middle School is a great introduction to the game, 12 hole layout, with the longest hole in the Chippewa Valley at 700 feet. Brush up on your short game at UW-Stout while practicing your putting! Axldog Acres Disc Golf is a private course in Boyceville on land that is reserved exclusively for the enjoyment of disc golf. Make reservations at (715) 643-9287 log on to http://fp1.centurytel.net/AxldogAcres DiscGolf/.For a map of local disc golf course locations, log on to www.menomoniechamber.org.
Arts & Culture
www.menomoniechamber.org • 2011 Destination & Living Guide • 11
Arts, culture, and entertainment are alive hereIf you’re looking to unplug and experience arts and culture in real time, you’ll find it in the greater Menomonie area.
Ludington Guard Band The strains of John Phillip Sousa fill the warm air in Wilson Park Tuesday nights, June through August. The Ludington Guard Band is just one of the 100-year-old institutions that make living in or visiting Menomonie so magical.
Mabel Tainter Center The Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts, built in 1889, is where ballet, drama, chorus, folk song, blue grass, and opera take turns filling the stage. Find center events at www.mabeltainter.com.
Performing at the Mabel for over 40 seasons, the community-based Menomonie Theater Guild presents 3-4 shows every year, including a major musical. To get involved or find out what is coming up, contact the Guild at (715) 235-2228. Summer Festivals The Greater Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center presents the Nature Valley Bicycle Festival Race, June 18th.
On July 4th, FreedomFest fills Wakanda Park with music and lights up the sky with fireworks at dusk.
July 27-31 is our popular Dunn County Fair. For Fair information call the Fair Board (715) 232-4005.
Step back in time without going far. In May and June, the Chippewa Valley Renaissance Faire is presented in Chippewa Falls, www.festfun.com. In July and August, the Wisconsin Renaissance Faire is held in in Glenwood City, visit www.wirenfaire.com.
To find more festival, event, music, and theater announcements, visit our website, www.menomoniechamber.org. A Place for Fine Art If art is food for the soul, then prepare to be well fed in one of western Wisconsin’s most respected art communities.
The greater Menomonie area is home to potters, stone cutters, photographers, jewelers, sculptors, metal workers, and painters. Many open their studios for special occassions throughout the year where art lovers can enjoy and puchase art.
UW-Stout’s art department contributes to the richness of the local arts. Two galleries are housed in the department, a student gallery and the John Furlong Gallery.
The Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts offers a monthly featured artist in the upstairs gallery, and maintains a gift shop that offers one-of-a-kind finds by local artists. The Mabel is also the site for the Annual Fine Arts and Crafts Faire in 2011, on December 2-3.
The local arts are further supported by ACT, Arts Coming Together, a consortium of artists, art organizations, and art advocates working cooperatively to nurture artists in their own communities, while fostering lifelong involvement with the arts. ACT maintains a gallery and space for classes, located behind the Wilson Place Mansion.
The future of arts is bright in Menomonie with new strategic initiatives. One such initiative, called Renaissance Menomonie, will promote the importance of arts to our region’s quality of life and economic health.
