Memphis Begins C-USA Tournament Against Host East CarolinaAfter wrapping up a 35-11 regular season, Mem-phis will begin the 2011 C-USA Tournament by facing off with host East Carolina, May 12, at 3:30 (CT). It will be a titanic pitcher’s duel, with Memphis ace Carly Hummel (the program’s sec-ond-ever 20-game winner) the probable starter against East Carolina All-American Toni Pais-ley. Memphis already defeated Paisley once in 2011, in the rubber-match of the Tigers first Conference USA series of the season at East Carolina. At the plate, the work of Jessica Phil-lips (school-record 14 home runs and 43 RBI) and Heather Mott (currently batting a school-re-cord .372) speaks for itself on the Memphis side, East Carolina has used a motley crew of young players to pace its offense this season. Suzanne Riggs and Jordan Lewis have each won Confer-ence USA hitter of the week awards in 2011, yet East Carolina has hit a mere 12 home runs as a team during the campaign.
Last Year in the C-USA TournamentMemphis advanced to the C-USA semifinals, af-ter beating Tulsa in the quarterfinals. Carly Hum-mel threw a complete-game three-hitter, striking out three for her season’s 15th victory. Vanessa Walle and Heather Mott each hit home runs for the Tigers. Against UCF in the semis, Memphis fell, 3-1. Hummel started and threw five innings in a no-decision. Maddie McKinley pushed across Memphis’ lone run on a solo homer.
Last Time Against East CarolinaIn the conference-schedule opener for 2011, the Tigers got their first-ever series victory against East Carolina. Despite dropping game one, 4-1, Memphis roared back in the second game of the doubleheader thanks to six solid innings from Lauren Carley. Jessica Phillips and Ashleigh King drove in Memphis’ runs for a 2-1 victory. In the finale, Janelle Valle earned herself C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors, tossing a one-hitter for the victory. Phillips drove in Maddie McKinley

on the game’s lone run, defeating East Carolina All-American Toni Paisley.
All-Time Against East CarolinaEast Carolina owns a 12-5 mark all-time against the Tigers, even after Memphis took two of three from the Pirates to open the 2011 Conference USA schedule. Prior to that, East Carolina had won 10 in a row dating back to 2007.
Against the Pirates in the Conference TournamentThis is Memphis’ second-ever meeting with ECU during C-USA tournament time. In Mem-phis’ second game of the 2007 tournament, Jen-na Kubesch retired the first 26 batters she faced but ultimately lost, 1-0, in 10 innings. Kubesch was masterful in defeat, striking out 12 opposite Paisley (the C-USA Freshman of the Year that season). She retired the first two batters she faced in the ninth inning before ECU’s Christina Merida finally broke through with a base knock. Memphis placed only one runner in scoring position all day (on a sixth-inning double from Lindsay Pridgen), but the only runner in scoring position ECU produced in the game proved to be the deciding one, when the Pirates’ Charina Sumner tripled to open the 10th inning, followed by Kaui Tom singling her home for the victory.
Live CoverageThe Conference USA tournament can be fol-lowed through live stats provided by CBS Col-lege Sports GameTracker. Live chat provided by Memphis Media Relations will also be avail-able for each game. Links to the live chat and GameTracker can be found at GoTigersGo.com. Conference USA will also provide All-Ac-cess video, for which a link will be provided at GoTigersGo.com.
On DeckA victory will propel Memphis into the conference tournament semifinals for the second-straight season, where they would face the winner of the No. 1 vs. No. 8 match-up between regular season champion Houston and Southern Miss, Friday, at 3:30 p.m. (CT). Should they prevail, they would play in the Conference Champion-ship game, Saturday, at 12 p.m. (CT), in a game that would be televised on CBS College Sports. A loss at any point leaves the Tigers (and their seven seniors) at the mercy of the selection committee to deem the U of M worthy of an at-large selection into the 2011 NCAA Softball Tournament.
Streaking TigersFor the fifth season in a row, the Tigers have qualified for the C-USA tournament. In three of their past four trips to the C-USA tournament, Memphis has been victorious in at least one game, a streak the Tigers are looking to con-tinue.
Tigers Sweep Southern Miss, Ending Regu-lar Season at 35-11Memphis traveled to Hattiesburg and swept through Southern Miss to solidify their fourth-place regular season finish, the highest in school history. In game one, Carly Hummel threw a

complete-game, her season’s 18th, for a 4-1 win. Nikki Moreno went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to pace the Tiger offense. Lauren Carley picked up the victory in relief of Janelle Valle in the second game, going 4.1 innings and allowing a mere two hits. Heather Mott homered for the ninth time in 2011 for Memphis. In the fi-nale, Mott homered again and Hummel became just the second Tiger pitcher to record 20 wins in a season in Memphis’ 3-1 victory.
Memphis Successful in Conference PlayThe Tigers finished the 2011 campaign with their best record in conference play. Memphis went 15-7 in the league and finshed the eight confer-ence series 5-2-1. The only two series losses came to C-USA regular season co-champions Houston and Tulsa. Four of the U of M’s five
league series victories came by way of sweeps.
Memphis Wins 10 StraightThe Tigers set a new program record with 10-straight victories Between April 6 and April 23. The previous record was eight games, which the team had accomplished earlier this season as well as in 2007. Memphis has won 14 of its last 15 games.
Rainy Days are Here...AgainWith its last home game of the season cancelled due to inclement weather, Memphis has now lost nine games due to storms this season. The Tigers nine lost games were against opponents with an average RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) of 104.1, including five lost games to top-100 RPI squads; Memphis is 11-10 against the RPI Top-100 this season. In 2010, the Tigers lost a whopping 11 games due to inclement weather.
Tigers Split Rain-Shortened Final Home Se-ries With UABThe elements conspired to shorten the Tigers final home series of 2011, against UAB, with Memphis splitting their doubleheader with the Blazers, Saturday. In game one, UAB won 4-2, despite Carly Hummel’s 16th complete game of 2011 and a two-run double from Maddie McKin-ley. Memphis won the second game, a 1-0 pitcher’s duel won by the Tigers Janelle Valle, for her season’s third shut-out and sixth victory, scattering five hits and striking out seven. Kamri Chester’s first home run of the season came in the sixth and provided all the scoring Valle would need.
Phillips Earns Third POW Honor, Breaks Single-Season RecordsPhillips led Memphis with a .543 batting aver-age, 10 RBI, three home runs and four runs scored as the team went 4-0 on the week with a run-rule victory over Arkansas and a three-game conference sweep against UCF. The first base-man began the week with a 3-for-4 performance against Arkansas with two home runs, including a grand slam, six RBI and three runs scored. It marked her fourth multi-homer game of the sea-son and fifth of her career. The six RBI also tied her career high for the second time this year. The grand slam was also her second of the sea-son. Phillips then went 3-for-7 against UCF with four RBI and two walks. She hit her third home

run of the week in the first inning of game one against UCF to help Memphis earn a 3-0 shut-out. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native became the school record holder for home runs in a season with 14 and RBI with 43 during the week.
Phillips Sets School Home Run Record, Ti-gers Thrash ArkansasOn a windswept evening in Sherwood, Arkan-sas, the University of Memphis softballers knocked the Razorbacks around to the tune of a 14-2 beatdown. An eight-run first inning got the Tigers started on the right foot, which included two-run hits by Kailey Kassner and Kamri Ches-ter and a two-run home run from Heather Mott. Carly Hummel was brilliant on the mound, scat-tering two runs on two hits in six innings while striking out eight batters. Junior first baseman Jessica Phillips socked two home runs in this one, and a career-high tying six runs knocked in. The win gave the Tigers their second against an SEC foe in 2011.
Leading OffSince sliding into the role of the lead-off hitter in the final game of the Houston series, senior Heather Mott has been on a tear. The Pensac-
ola, Fla., product has batted .471 with seven home runs and 21 RBI, reaching base at least once in 21 of 22 contests. Mott started the sea-son penciled into the No. 2 slot after leading off for much of last season. Her career-best 14-game hitting streak, which tied a school record, came to an end in the series-opener against Southern Miss, May 7.
Hummel Tosses Third No-Hitter of Season, Tigers Sweep TSUIn game two, sophomore ace Carly Hummel picked up her third no-hitter of 2011, striking out 13 in five innings for her season’s 15th victory. It marked the third game in a row that Hummel had struck out 10 or more batters.
Historic Home Run Barrage Downs UTEPThe Tigers scored 30 runs in the series at El Paso, with game three dominated by the long ball. Junior Jessica Phillips hit a school-record three home runs, including a walk-off grand slam, and senior Maddie McKinley added two home runs of her own in a 15-6 rout that gave Memphis the series victory. The six roundtrip-pers hit by the Tigers in that contest were a school-record, eclipsing the old mark of four that

First National RPI Announced; Memphis Cracks Top 50While the love from the polls has been lacking of late, the first Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) rankings of 2011 put Memphis softball in rarified air. The Tigers checked in at 40th in the nation in the first RPI of 2011, their highest spot in school history, and up more than 60 spots from last season’s end point of 105th.
Phillips Named C-USA Co-Hitter of the Week; Second Weekly Honor of 2011Phillips slugged three home runs to power Mem-phis to a 15-6 win, Sunday, at UTEP; the three home runs were a school-record and tied a con-ference record. It was Phillips’ third multi-home run game of 2011 and fourth of her career. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native set a school record with 12 total bases had six RBI, third-most in a single game in school history. For the week, Phillips hit .455 and slugged 1.455, with three homers, a triple and nine RBI to earn the second weekly conference award of her junior season.
Valle Named C-USA Pitcher of the WeekMemphis senior Janelle Valle went 1-0 with a save in three appearances to help Memphis win two of three at defending C-USA Champions, East Carolina, to open conference play. Valle allowed no runs and just one hit in 10 innings of work with six strikeouts. The Lake Elsinore, Calif., native earned the start in game three and out dueled C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Toni Paisley, throwing a complete-game, one hitter in a 1-0 victory. It is her first career
complete-game one hitter and her second shut-out of the season.
Tigers Take Road Series from Defending Champs to Kick Off 2011 C-USA ScheduleMemphis took two of three contests from East Carolina in their season-opening conference series, besting the defending C-USA champi-ons twice in their new stadium. After losing the series opener, 4-1, Memphis rebounded with a hard-fought game two win, 2-1. Lauren Carley pitched six innings for the win, while Janelle Val-le picked up her third career save. In the Sunday rubber match, Valle started and picked up the win on a complete game, one-hit shut out, the sixth of her career. For Memphis, it was their first series win against ECU since the first year of Tiger softball in 2006.
Hummel Strikes Out School Record 19 Against No. 22 Texas A&MAgainst 22nd-ranked Texas A&M, sophomore Carly Hummel pitched one of the best games in U of M softball history, striking out a school-record 19 batters in 8.1 innings of two-hit ball while not allowing an earned run in the extra-inning affair. Catcher Amber Lindahl also found her way into the record books with a school-record 20 putotus.
Tigers Receive First Ever National Poll VotesWith a 12-3 record and two upsets of top-25 foes (Ohio State, Stanford) during the season’s opening two weeks, Memphis earned two votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25 poll for the week of Mar. 1, the first time in school history Mem-phis has received votes in a nationally-recog-
nized poll. The Tigers received votes in the poll for two weeks, before falling out.
Making History with Win at PAC-10 OpponentBy beating Stanford in Palo Alto, the Tigers carved their own slice of Conference USA his-tory. Never before had a C-USA school beaten a Pac-10 squad, at home, in the regular season, before the Tigers 2-1 win against the Cardinal. The only other time a C-USA team had beaten a Pac-10 team at home was when Houston de-feated Washington in the 2008 NCAA Regional, sweeping the Huskies out of the NCAA Tourna-ment with two wins.
Giant KillersAfter not having a single win against a top-25 school in the program’s first six years of exis-tence, Memphis knocked off two top-25 oppo-nents in the first two weeks of 2011, defeating No. 22/24 Ohio State, 7-3, at the FIU Combat Classic and then dispatching host and No. 16/17 Stanford, 2-1, at the Stanford Nike Invita-tional. Memphis’ run of upsets was ended in an extra-inning thriller against No. 22 Texas A&M at the Bulldog Classic.
Hummel Among C-USA LeadersCarly Hummel is proving that her snub during pre-season all-conference voting was an oversight, finishing the regular season with a stellar 20-5 record. Hummel is among the top pitcher’s in the conference in wins (20; third), ERA (1.27; fifth), strike outs (181, fifth), opposing batting average (.138, third) and runs allowed (36; tied for sixth) and leads Conference USA with three no-hitters this season. On the final day of the regular season, she became just the second Tiger in program history to win 20 games in a season, joining Jenna Kubesch (24 in 2007) as the only two Memphis pitchers in that exclusive club. She is also one of two pitchers (Houston’s Donna Bourgeois) to have two wins over top-25 opponents this season.
Smokin’ AcesWhile Hummel is the ace of the Tiger pitching staff, Coach Thees’ other pitchers are quietly putting together an impressive year. Senior Janelle Valle is sixth in the conference in ERA (1.61) and second in earned runs allowed (18).
Meanwhile, senior Lauren Carley is second in C-USA in hits allowed (55) and tied for first in runs allowed (22).
Better Late Than NeverThe Tiger offense has produced 36 sixth-inning runs in 41 games and those runs have come in handy. Memphis tied DePaul with a two-run sixth and rallied with four runs in the sixth against FIU to tie, but dropped both games. At the Panther Invitational, Memphis used the sixth inning to earn three victories. Memphis used one-run sixth innings to post victories over Ap-palachian State and Lipscomb. A three-run sixth helped the Tigers top Georgia State after trail-ing 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Against Stanford, Jessica Phillips’ sixth-inning home run proved to be the difference in the Ti-gers upset of the 16th-ranked Cardinal. A five-run sixth inning run-ruled UTEP in the Tigers finale with the Miners, while a sixth-inning run in game one of that road series tied the score at three. Kailey Kassner’s three-run sixth-inning home run against Marshall proved to be the difference in that contest. Against UAB, Kamri Chester’s solo home run was the game’s only run scored.
Three Is The Magic NumberWhen Carly Hummel steps in the pitching circle
as a starter, all she needs is three runs of sup-port. With 44 starts in her career, Hummel is 25-2 when the Tiger offense puts three or more runs on the board. Her only losses in which the Tigers scored three or more runs came against Tulsa on March 27 and 28 of 2010.
Quick StartMemphis has scored 48 first-inning runs this season. The Tigers topped North Florida 3-0 to open the season and all three runs came in the first inning. After scoring one run in the first against Ohio State, the U of M scored two runs off a Maddie McKinley two-run shot to take an early lead against Kentucky. Memphis scored four runs in the first inning in both games of the doubleheader against Alabama A&M. The Tigers got on the board first against Stanford as well. In the finale against UTEP, Heather Mott led off the first with a home run, then Maddie McKinley followed two batters later with a two-run job. Against Arkansas, the Tigers exploded for eight first-inning runs, on the way to a 14-2 win. In the opener against UCF, all three Tiger runs came in the first inning. When scoring in the first inning this season, Memphis is 19-2 and 29-1 when scoring first in a game. The Tigers have scored the game-winning run in the first inning 10 times this season. The Tigers have also homered 10 times in the first inning this season, most out of

Coach Thees Win MilestonesWhen Memphis took the field on Feb. 11 against North Florida, head coach Windy Thees was seeking her 300th career victory. Carly Hummel threw a no hitter to help Thees earn her 300th career victory. She got her 150th win at the U of M at East Carolina, Mar. 12.
Hummel Tosses Three No HittersSophomore pitcher Carly Hummel tossed the sixth no hitter in program history on Feb. 11 at the FIU Combat Classic. After throwing four one-hitters in her freshman campaign, Hummel started her sophomore season with her first ca-reer no hitter. Hummel didn’t allow a hit through nine and two thirds innings pitched this season. She then added her second no hitter of the sea-son and seventh in program history with an 8-0 victory in five innings at home against Mississip-pi Valley State. Hummel retired 11-straight, be-fore allowing the only base runner in the game, a walk. Against TSU, Hummel struck out 13 bat-ters in a five-inning no-hitter.
Memphis Sweeps C-USA Weekly AwardsThe U of M swept the C-USA weekly awards in week one of the season as pitcher Carly Hum-mel earned C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors and first baseman Jessica Phillips picked up C-USA Hitter of the Week accolades. Hummel tossed a no-hitter in the season-opener and finished week one with a 3-0 record, a 1.24 ERA and allowed just 12 hits. Phillips homered twice and drove in five in the first week of action and posted a .462 batting average in the open-ing week of action. With Hummel and Phillips earning the weekly awards, the U of M softball program records its first sweep of the weekly awards in program history.
Hummel Joins 200K ClubCarly Hummel became just the second Tiger pitcher to reach 200 strikeouts in one season joining Jenna Kubesch who struck out 243 batters in 2007. Hummel is the second Memphis player to reach 300 K’s in a career, along with Kubesch (401). Hummel finished her freshman campaign with 210 strikeouts and has 181 strikeouts this season to move into second place for career strikeouts in program history with 391. With just 11 more strike outs, Hummel will pass Jenna Kubesch for first all-time in Memphis history. Hummel currently owns the school record for strikeouts per game with an average of 8.40.
Tigers Collect First Win Over Ranked TeamThe U of M posted its first win over a ranked opponent in school history with a 7-3 eighth inning victory over No. 22/24 Ohio State. The Tigers had faced 13 ranked programs in the five seasons prior to the Feb. 12 meeting with Ohio State. Memphis had fallen all 13 times with the last game against a ranked opponent falling on Feb. 7, 2009 against No. 3/2 Alabama.

THE LAST TIME ....WINdy THEES
Head Coach • 6th Year 171-148, 334-240
Hired with the daunt-ing task of starting a soft-ball program from scratch, University of Memphis head coach Windy Thees has stepped up to the chal-lenge. In just five seasons, Thees has built the Tigers into a program that has
continued to show it can compete with any team in the country. Now entering her sixth season in 2011, Mem-phis looks to continue its growth with a squad that returns eight starters, three pitchers and 16 let-terwinners. Six newcomers join Tiger Softball for Coach Thees’ sixth season. In the short six-year history of the Memphis softball program, Thees has compiled a 171-148 (.536) overall record and guided the team to the Conference USA Championship Tournament in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Tigers finished seventh in C-USA in 2010 with a 25-26 overall record and 8-15 mark in league play. Coach Thees tutored the Tiger pitching staff to seven single-season pitching records in 2010, including ERA (1.97), opponent batting average (.192), most strikeouts per game (6.62), fewest hits allowed (241), fewest home runs allowed (18), fewest runs allowed (130) and fewest earned runs allowed (98). Carly Hummel highlighted the individual pitching performances with five games of 10 or more strikeouts, including four of the top five strikeout performances in program history. Hum-mel struck out a school record 15 batters against Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State, re-spectively. Hummel tossed the third-best strike-out performance against Saint Louis and the fifth-ranked came against Wichita State. Memphis pitchers tossed six one-hitters in 2010. Hummel threw four one-hitters and com-bined for another. Lauren Carley threw one and combined for a one-hitter with Hummel. The 2010 season also saw the Tigers ad-vance to the C-USA Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history after a 5-1 victory over Tulsa in the opening round. In her five seasons at Memphis, Thees’ play-ers have earned eight All-Conference awards, seven all-conference freshman team selections and two NFCA All-South Region selections. This past year, Lelani Barnardino and Vanessa Walle earned Second Team All-Conference USA selection and Carly Hummel was named to the all-conference freshman team. Thees’ players have also found success in the classroom with all 15 of her seniors earning their diploma. In addition, under Thees’ tenure the Ti-gers have earned four CoSIDA/ESPN The Maga-zine All-District selections, 15 NFCA Scholar Athlete selections and four C-USA All-Academic team selections. The softball program has twice produced the U of M’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Former volleyball and softball let-terwinner Melissa Nance was the 2008 Memphis nominee and former pitching standout Jenna Kubesch was nominated in 2007. Kubesch also earned one of 12 C-USA Postgraduate Scholar-ships.
