2011 is the year of new flavor for all of Johnson Countys football teamsAs thrilling a season as 2010 was for Johnson

County football, 2011 might be considered hard-pressed by some observers to surpass the excite-

ment we had last yearThat, of course, depends on who you talk toIf youre an Alvarado fan, the only way 2011

could be any better is if the Indians get over thehump and qualify for the state championshipgame after falling just short in the state semifinalslast year

And the only way to top a state finals appear-ance is to win the whole thing

While that may be a lot to ask of any highschool football team, the Indians magical seasonof 2010 has given the Alvarado faithful plenty of

reason to hope, especially with the Indians tal-ented secondary returning almost completely in-tact from last years team

Quarterback Kenny West is a junior with play-off experience, so the Indians can have confi-dence in his ability to run the offense this year

Alvarado returns loads of talents on both sidesof the ball

For the remainder of Johnson County, a cou-

ple of schools hit a low point last yearCleburne and Joshua combined to go 1-19 with

the Yellow Jackets accounting for the lone win

(over the Owls at home)For those two schools, theres nowhere to gobut up and after personally observing the twoscrimmage different opponents, both teams appearto have a promising chance to tally a few morewins this season

The Jackets will trot out junior quarterbackQuade Coward, who may be the promising quar-terback Cleburne has had in years, according tosome observers

He put up decent numbers last year in splittingtime with senior Chaston Cuffee Now, the stage

is hisCuffee committed to the University of Mis-

souri in the summer and will have a chance thisyear to showcase his defensive skills at the safetyposition

Joshua will have Garrett Hoffman, an impres-sive-looking sophomore, at the quarterback posi-tion The Owls return plenty of hungry startersfrom last year on both sides of the ball, no doubt

eager to erase the taste of an 0-10 seasonGrandview and Godley, as has been the trend

lately, both appear geared for another run at the ti-

tle of their respective districts Maybe this yearwill be the year the two meet deep in the playoffsOne can only hope

Burleson narrowly missed the playoffs lastyear, and will field a vastly different team in itssecond season in District 7-4A The Elks went 5-5last year and beat both Cleburne and Joshua

Rio Vista has its fourth head coach in fouryears The Eagles are trying to find consistencyand the old-school approach of John Odell may bewhat they need to find it

Last by not least, Burleson Centennial will

play its first varsity season in 2011 The Spartansare an outlaw team which means they arent af-filiated with a district and cant qualify for thepostseason

The Alvarado Indians were led last year by

a stellar defensive effort, a breakout youngquarterback and senior leadership

Theyll have all three of those things againthis year in junior quarterback Kenny West, se-nior offensive lineman Jake Glasscock and se-nior safety Tyler Bates, who is a threat when-ever and wherever he is on the field

Glasscock, a three-year letterman and acharismatic presence, said he expects greatthings from his teammates during his final sea-son

I expect us to surpass last season in ways,he said Last season, I recognized that otherswork effort including my own helped us cometogether as a team, so I tried to be even moreencouraging to my teammates

We came together as a line and as a teamGlasscock added that hes the team motiva-

The 2010 all-district performer has the attention of coaches fromajor colleges and universities

Hes one of the best weve had come through Burleson, saiducker, in his second year as the Elks head coach and fifth seasonverall at the school There are coaches who have been here longerthan he has] and everybody says hes as good or better than anyoneho has come through here

And it is because of that line -- Baldeschwiler, left tackle Luke Jakobbson (6-4, 280), Baldeschwilers twin brother, Dillon, andsome combination of Jordan Bond, Hunter Heins and Ethan Jones that the Elks believe they can qualify for one of four playoff spotsin District 7-4A

The Elks open the season at 7:30 pm Friday at home againstMansfieldAfter two consecutive playoff appearances in 2008 and 2009,

the Elks fell short last seasonInjuries were an impediment Elks players lost a total of about

90 games to injuries last year This year, the Elks, who went 5-5overall and 3-4 in district in 2010, believe they have the goods toreturn

Behind that line are senior quarterback Barrett Cain and threeand perhaps four running backs who will see time

Senior Chris Aylesworth, sophomore Ayinee Alaajiy, ColinSeago and Addison Parrish will all play

The surprise of the fall might be Alaajiy, Tucker saidCoaches were prepared to send Alaajiy for a full season of junior

varsity despite a good summerWhen we put the pads on, though, that changed, Tucker said

Hes really come on

Hes not a blazer,but hes a big kid, hes smart

Tucker said that Alaajiys contributions on defense is what madethe decision easier Aylesworth, too, plays in the defensive backfield

as a safetyIts one of those deals where one might [turn out to be] themore dominant running back and the other one will play more ondefense, Tucker said Theyre both playing well on both sides ofthe ball right now

Burlesons Derek Baldeschwiler is an imposing figureboth on and off the football field

In conversation, hes soft-spoken, shy and unassumingbut standing 6-4 and weighing more than 260 pounds, herepresents what Burleson fans are used to seeing on theiroffensive and defensive lines

Size and powerBaldeschwiler is a two-year letterman and plays right

tackle and defensive endHe feels the Elks couldve gone further last year and

added they need to capitalize on it this year with the re-turning talent they have

I think we did good, he said Ive been playing righttackle since the seventh grade and in high school, I was al-ways one of the best on the offensive line on the JV butthere were seniors in front of me

The waiting has paid offBaldeschwiler has received interest from several Divi-

sion I schools from Baylor to Oklahoma State to TexasChristian University

He received first-team all-district honors last year andaims to do so again this season

That was my goal, he said I also wanted to make theall-academic team

Baldeschwiler had high praise for his fellow linemanlast year and said this year, along with the help of seniorLuke Jakobsson, the Elks will have the power in thetrenches to go far

I thought we had the best line in the district, he saidSometimes wed show it, but sometimes wed make men-tal mistakes

This will be the second year Baldeschwiler has been apart of Jason Tuckers multiple look on offense for Burle-son

During the tenure of Mel Maxfield, the Elks focusedheavily on run blocking and little on pass blocking

Baldeschwiler said the transition has been trickyWhen we were running the wing-T, we didnt really

focus too much on pass blocking, he said I think Iveprogressed fairly well and Luke and I are fairly experi-enced

With no district to play in, coach Kyle Geller had tocramble to put a schedule together, making the Spartansomewhat the vagabond

However, dont think Centennial, a second-year schoolith no senior class, will be wandering aimlessly during its

naugural varsity seasonThere is a purposeThe big thing is to compete, Geller said We want

hampion Aledo gave Centennial a taste of the big leaguesThe experience presented some expected obstacles,

He went to the Internet the week after the 2010 regularseason was over and started calling people with nine

games We were lucky enough to grab themWhat he came up was a hodgepodge, which includes

some teams just like themAfter Hillcrest, the Spartans will meet 2A Krum, which

started football two years ago, and new schools BastropCedar Creek (on the schedule twice) and Round Rock Ce-

dar Ridge, Class 4A programs Pampa and Dallas Spruceand private schools Fort Worth Christian, Arlington GracePrep and Parish Episcopal of Dallas

Geller has experience with new programs He was theoffensive coordinator at Mansfield Summit when thatschool opened in the late 1990s

He admits that the similarities between the two schoolsare few Summit played a varsity schedule with a handfulof seniors in a district that included traditional power-houses such as Duncanville, DeSoto and Cedar Hill

Summit took its lumps that season, Geller remembers,and so, too, will Centennial But thats OK, the Spartanscoach said

More than anything our kids the next year [at Summit]were ready to go, said Geller And thats what Im hop-ing for here

There will be things that take time and were going tohave to go through a process to get where we need to be asa program But as long as we compete hard well be OK

For Burleson Centennial junior Tanner Hodges, thisis pretty much the Texasdream for any high schoolfootball fan

Hodges is the starting

quarterback for the Spar-tans who will take theschools first-ever varsitysnap at 7 pm Thursday atElk Stadium against DallasHillcrest

Its really cool, hesaid Since I started lastyear and even though wedidnt have a varsity, itspretty neat to still have allthe same guys with me for

all these years Itll be coolto be able to start off at thevarsity level and win somegames

With a win on Thursday,Hodges will be the win-ningest quarterback in Cen-tennial history

I want to prove that just because were not se-niors, were just as goodas everyone else, he saidWe want to prove that wecan play with everyoneelse

Hodges will quarter-back a spread offense forthe Spartans which he saidwill vary at about a 50-50ratio between run andpass

He started for Centen-nial last year on the JV

and was the starting fresh-man quarterback twoyears ago for the BurlesonElks on its freshman team

Im very confident,he said Especially whenwe are able to qualify for

confident we can make arun

That will have to waitfor one more year By then,the tale will only get juicierfor Hodges who will be asenior by next season

He said he has high aspi-rations for himself this year

as the Spartans get theirfirst-ever taste of varsitycompetition

Personally, Id like tothrow about 25 touch-downs, he said I want tobe in a place where we canwin every game

At 6-3, Hodges describeshimself more as a pocketpasser than a multiplethreat on the ground

Our receivers are prettyfast, though, he said,laughing Weve got a fewwho are extremely fast Imhappy with what Ive got

After two 10-0 regular seasons, the Godley Wildcats are inn interesting position heading into this season

Head Coach Randy Brawner said he and the team felt theireason ended a little too soon after last years surprising first-ound playoff loss to Littlefield (14-12)

Nevermind that Littlefield advanced to the regional finalshe Wildcats were stunned

With all-state safety Austin Martinez now playing forrandview, the Wildcats will have to fill that hole this year asell

Needless to say, things have been interesting for Godley dur-ng the last eight months

The Wildcats return four offensive players, including dy-amic senior Kolby Brown, senior quarterback Rhett Brawner,unior right tackle Blake Washington and senior center Ianinder

On defense, senior linebacker Rhett Roden returns alongith junior Drew Benge and Brown at safety and senior line-

acker Sam CummingsGodley will need to fill the hole left by four-year lettermanandry Martinez He was also an all-state selection last yearnd ran for more than 2,000 yards

Brawner said the offense will remain the same, but the Wild-ats will not be afraid to throw the ball to improving receivers,uch as senior Koby Foster, Riley Davis and Canyon Williams

We look for [Foster] to do well for us, Brawner said Welso have two sophomores who we think will be big for ushey are Jerry Tye at the defensive tackle position and Gagealey, who will be a defensive end Cyran McClendon is a ju -ior defensive end

Hopefully, since were three years into the program, we canreplace those quality seniors and keep rolling on

Brawner said his skill kids, Brown in particular, are still ex-plosive

I think our defense could be even better than it was lastyear, Brawner said A big part of it is about staying healthy

Brown made waves last year with his punt-returning capa-bility and returned several for touchdowns He provided an-

other alternative if defenses keyed on Martinez too muchHes one of the most explosive players on the team,

Brawner said Hes that big-play home run threat and teamswill have to defend for him On defense, he finds the ball andgoes to it

The Godley Wildcats arent short onconfidence despite losing a 2,000-yardrusher from last season and several defensestandouts

A trio of seniors including quarterbackRhett Brawner (son of head coach RandyBrawner), linebacker Rhett Roden (son of

former Godley star Ricky Roden) and IanKinder are expressing confidence that this

years team might be even better than lastyears squad

Despite going 20-0 in the regular season

the last two years, Godley was defeated inheartbreaking fashion in 2009 in the re-gional finals by eventual state champion Pi-lot Point, and lost a stunner, 14-12, in thefirst round last year against Littlefield (aneventual regional finalist)

Kinder, an offensive lineman for theWildcats, said Godley has a chance to gofurther because of the leadership of thisyears team Hes been working in thetrenches for Godley the last two years

Theres a combined seven years of varsityexperience between Grandview seniors DavisScarbrough and Kirk Waldrip

Waldrip, who plays left tackle on offenseand is also on the defensive line, is entering hisfourth season on the varsity team

Scarbrough, the teams center, is a three-year letterman

Both players have seen a lot of ups anddowns through their time with the Zebras

Waldrip said the experience helps him gaina more mature perspective on the game

The older you get, the more you kind of

develop a mind for the game, he said Theexperience of being on the varsity for thismany years has paid off for my senior year

I feel this has been one of the better teams,and its probably the strongest one Ive playedon

Scarbrough echoes his teammates senti-ments about the 2011 Zebras

Theres no doubt we can do something re-ally great, he said If we work our butts off,we can do anything we want

When Scarbrough was a sophomore, heplayed the guard position For the last twoyears, hes been hiking the ball to Derek Jarrellat quarterback

A year removed from an 0-10 season, Joshua head footballoach Jerry Bird said his Owls are ready to take advantage ofhe opportunity the 2011 season brings

Joshua returns 12 starters from last years team with six ju-iors and six seniors

The seniors are defensive lineman Chris Baker, wide re-eiver Michael Keeton, defensive lineman Nick Manshack, of-ensive lineman Aaron Maxey, receiver Zack Maxey and defen-ive lineman Sergio Rodriguez

The juniors are running back KJ Evans, receiver Jakeears, running back Colin Radford, offensive lineman Calebiley, linebacker Devin Scoggins and offensive lineman JoshhitworthWere going to be young again, Bird said But weve had

great offseason over the summer and we probably had the bestirst week of practice since Ive been here

Bird is starting his third yearTheyve bought into the program and understand it, he

added Theyre just trying to get better and become a team

Were focusing on that and on game 1 against AzleLast year, the Owls were often undersized and outmatched

in each District 7-4A gameBird said depth at the receiver position and at running back

with Radford as the starter could change the Owls fortunesWere expecting great things out of him, Bird said Hes

That experience last year helped him mature a great dealWe feel like were very strong at the running back and wide re-ceiver positions, which is something we havent been in thepast

Hes got all the tools, Bird said of his young quarterbackHes just very young He fits in our system very well, but he

needs to gain experience He has a good sense of football andwe feel very comfortable with him in our running and passinggames

Hes a versatile quarterback and we feel comfortable withhis decision-making

Through the offseason, Bird said his team isnt looking backto last years winless campaign for inspiration

We worked hard through the offseason to get bigger, fasterand stronger, he said The understanding of our system hasreally helped We dont look back, but just ahead We knowwhat our goals are and what we want to accomplish

Bird added both juniors and seniors need to step up and leadthe youthful Owls in the competitive District 7-4A

The Joshua Owls are putting their future inthe hands of sophomore quarterback GarrettHoffman

At first glance, Hoffman resembles a moreseasoned upperclassman He played varsitybasketball as a freshman

Head Coach Jerry Bird said he under-

stands the game of football and possessesgreat decision-making capabilities

Physically, hes got the size, Bird saidHes also got the arm strength and can reallydevelop

Hoffman said hes been playing quarter-back since he was in the third gradeIts come naturally, he addedIve played it every year, he said I was

the quarterback on the freshman team last yearand its been really fun, but its also nerve-wracking

I didnt think Id be starting this early Ilike it because I can get more experiences andcolleges can watch the younger starters de-velop more

quarterback In 2009, it was Jesse WilliamsonHoffman said he hopes to provide some sta-

bility to what has been a turbulent run forJoshua which has gone 2-18 in the last twoyears, including 0-10 last year

The team has lost 18 games in a rowI feel confident now that Ive learned moreof the system, he said At the start, I didntfeel that great Ive learned how to read the de-fenses and what the strategies are to mess withtheir minds

Hoffman said there is no comparison be-tween the speed of the game at the freshmanlevel and the varsity level

Its a lot different and so much faster, hesaid They hit a lot harder this year

Hoffman describes himself as a mobile

quarterback and said his main inclination inthe pocket is to scramble

I would stand in the pocket if they told meto, he said But Id much rather run out Imreally comfortable learning the system and Im

glad Coach Bird trusts me enough to put theresponsibility on my shouldersBird said Hoffmans decision-making will

improve over timeAs a sophomore, its hard to make deci-

sions in two seconds, he said Hes capableof doing good things and hes really come along way in the spring and the fall

Junior Colin Radford is the backup quarter-back for the Owls this season
