You have decided to study abroad, but where should you go? There are many countries to choose from, and even more universities. Why should you look at Canada? Here are three good reasons:

Why Canada? Why Laurier?

2 | www.chooselaurier.ca/international

QualityCanada’s high quality education system ranks among the best in the world. A Canadian degree is well-regarded in business, government and academic circles around the globe.

CostCanada is known for its high-quality, low-cost education system. Virtually all of our universities are public, so not only will you receive a quality education, you will find our tuition rates for international students to be lower than many other countries. Studying in Canada costs considerably less than the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom.

The Canadian ExperienceCanada is a friendly, safe country with a high standard of living and one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the world. No wonder over 130,000 students choose to come to study in Canada each year.

After you decide to study in Canada, we hope you will then decide to attend Wilfrid Laurier University, one of

Canada’s best and fastest growing mid-sized universities (our enrolment has grown by almost 50 per cent in five years, even though our admission standards for many of our programs are among the highest). We have more than 14,000

full-time undergraduate and gradudate students studying at campuses in Waterloo, Kitchener and Brantford, Ontario, and offer great undergraduate and graduate programs in arts, business, education, science, social work and music. Although our environment is growing, our university is still noted for its friendliness and sense of community on all of our campuses.

Laurier is big enough to offer excellent programs and distinguished faculty, and yet small enough to offer personal attention to its students.

OUR REpUTaTiOn

Wilfrid Laurier University is one of Canada’s finest undergraduate universities.

96.8% of Laurier graduates secure employment six months after graduation.

In the Globe & Mail’s University Report, our studentsgave Laurier:

MY LaURiER ExpERiEnCE Nikita Tretyakov knew he wanted to study in Canada and had a clear idea of which university he would attend.

“Wilfrid Laurier University is one of the best business schools in Canada,” he exclaims.

But it was also Laurier’s strong sense of community and small campus atmosphere that ultimately won Tretyakov over.

“I’m really happy with my decision to be in the Business and Math double degree program,” he says. “The University makes it possible for students to have a very diverse life with a mix of studying, working, social and sports activities.”

Being an international student from Russia, Tretyakov has also had to adjust to Canadian culture – a task he didn’t find hard to do.

“I’ve had an unbelievable experience in Canada,” says Tretyakov. “I really enjoy Waterloo. It’s a city full of students and entertainment.”

MY LaURiER ExpERiEnCE After spending some of her vacation time in Canada and noticing how friendly everyone was, Zaira Rangel decided that Canada would be a great place to attend university. Rangel initially chose Laurier because of its small campus. She felt the close-knit community encouraged her to get to know and make friends with people from her classes and from other programs.

“Laurier makes you feel like you are part of a big family, the Laurier family,” she says. “Laurier has exceeded my expectations!”

As a psychology student, Rangel likes that she is given opportunities to apply the knowledge she has learned from lectures and design and conduct experiments in other courses. She also works as a research assistant in the psychology department.

“At Laurier, there are always ways in which you can gain knowledge outside of the classroom.”

MY LaURiER ExpERiEnCE Every year, at the end of summer, first-year students prepare anxiously for the big move to Waterloo. For some, that might mean a short drive down the highway. But for TK Mawuli Azaglo, it meant travelling 8,803 kilometers from Ghana, Africa to a country very different from his own.

“I had some challenges adjusting to life in Canada, such as the cold weather, a different education system and the culture shock,” he recalls. “But there is great support from Laurier’s International Office and from many of the people around me.”

Now a fourth-year honours student double majoring in Political Science and Global Studies, Azaglo has found his place at Laurier.

“I have found my passion for my future ambitions at Laurier and I would strongly recommend coming here to everyone,” he says. “Laurier is not just an educational institution, it’s also a place that takes pride in producing well-rounded students and future leaders of the world.”.

About our faculties

Laurier Brantford: Opened in 1999 with only 39 students, our Brantford campus has established itself as a leader in innovative, liberal arts programming. Offering programs such as Criminology, Contemporary Studies, Human Rights & Human Diversity, Law and Society, Journalism, Health Studies and Leadership, a popular Concurrent Education program, Youth & Children’s Studies, and a broad selection of combination degree/diploma programs through partnerships with several Ontario colleges, Laurier Brantford continues to innovate. The campus now boasts over 2,500 students in more than 23 buildings in downtown Brantford. The campus is integrated into the city, providing students with the unique opportunity to truly be a part of their local community. Student engagement is key on campus, with many clubs committed to making a difference in the world, including: Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), World University Service Canada (WUSC), and Project Empathy, which was established by Laurier Brantford students to raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic. Students involved with Project Empathy complete bi-annual trips to Botswana and have created a documentary to share their stories. Pending approval by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies, by September 2011, the Brantford campus will also be offering a graduate program, a MA in criminology. www.chooselaurier.ca/international | 5

Faculty of arts: Arts is our largest faculty, with more than 110 full-time faculty members. Almost half of all Laurier students are Arts majors; they are drawn to Laurier Arts for traditional programs such as English, History, Political Science, Religion and Culture, Geography and Archaeology, and by exciting new interdisciplinary programs such as Communication Studies, Medieval Studies, Global Studies, Cultural Studies and North American Studies that cross academic boundaries.

Faculty of Music: With enrolment deliberately restricted to about 300 students, Laurier’s undergraduate music program is small enough to give students ready access to their instructors but large enough to form a full orchestra, four choirs and ensembles in chamber music, opera, wind, jazz and improvisation. Laurier also has an innovative Music Therapy program at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Faculty of science: Science is one of Laurier’s most entrepreneurial faculties. We’ve been building new facilities and developing new programs that are on the cutting edge of science. At Laurier, Science students don’t just learn about science, they do science. Our programs emphasize lab work, research papers and projects, field experiments, placements with community agencies and our students have the opportunity to work alongside their professors on current research within their field of study.

school of Business & Economics: One of Canada’s leading and largest business schools, the Laurier School of Business & Economics is known for its innovative programs and commitment to teaching excellence. Our business programs use case discussions, simulation games, visits by business executives and student projects to provide a real world experience where students can experiment and apply theoretical learning. Our diverse economics programs allow students to combine the study of economics with accounting, financial management and business administration. Laurier SBE is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Faculty of Education: Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Education offers a one-year, full-time, consecutive Bachelor of Education degree. We now offer two programs: Primary/Junior, that qualifies candidates in the primary and junior divisions (grades JK to 6) and Junior/Intermediate program, that qualifies candidates in the junior and intermediate divisions (grades 4 to 10) in the following subject specialties: English, French as a second language, geography, health and physical education, history, instrumental music, mathematics, general science, and vocal music.

At the undergraduate level, Laurier has seven academic faculties – Arts, Science, Business & Economics, Music, Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, Social Work, and Education – and campuses in both Waterloo and Brantford,

Ontario. Each has a distinctive character but they all share a commitment to innovation and academic excellence.

A student-centred universityCampus life at LaurierLaurier is a friendly, supportive university. Together, our staff and student volunteers have a wealth of information on diverse issues. It’s not big and impersonal. We don’t have classes of 1,000 to 1,500 students, and our profs are dedicated and approachable people who genuinely care about their students. In national surveys, we consistently receive top marks for our services to students, because our students’ well being, quality of life, safety, enjoyment and success are important to us.

Those surveys also tell us there’s no university in Canada that has more school spirit, a better atmosphere, or a stronger sense of community. That’s true whether you’re studying at our campus in Waterloo or our campus in Brantford.

We value international studentsLaurier has a commitment to internationalism. Our small but growing international student body includes people from all over the world. Because we don’t have a large number of international students, the opportunities are much greater for students from abroad to live and make friends with Canadian students.

Most of our students study at our main campus in Waterloo, Ontario, a thriving, culturally diverse city just 100 km west of Toronto. With a population of

325,000 people in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, Waterloo is a safe, comfortable community offering all the amenities you could want. Waterloo is at the centre of Canada’s high-tech industry (Research In Motion, makers of the BlackBerry, is among the many tech companies located here) and is home to three post-secondary institutions. In 2007, Waterloo was named the world’s most intelligent community.

The City of Waterloo, OntarioThe Waterloo Region offers a balance between unspoiled, natural beauty and vibrant urban life. Visitors can spend time exploring fascinating historic landmarks or discovering our many wonderful restaurants, farmer’s markets, theatres, factory outlets, galleries, and colourful festivals. Sports enthusiasts have a wealth of activities, from world class golf courses, great fishing, and canoeing, to hiking and trail-riding along our beautiful Grand River.

Waterloo Region is one of the most multicultural communities in Canada. About 20 per cent of the area’s residents were born outside Canada, and about nine per cent identify themselves as members of a visible minority. The largest populations of visible minorities in Kitchener and Waterloo are South Asian, Black (including African, Haitian, Jamaican and Somali), Southeast Asian, Latin American, Chinese, Arab and West Asian, Filipino, Japanese and Korean.

Reflecting this diversity, there are many restaurants and specialty food shops that cater to the international community in Waterloo (most just a few minutes’ walk from the campus), and there are also a number of religious organizations catering to Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist and other faiths.

The City of Brantford, OntarioOur Brantford campus is located in downtown Brantford, a vibrant community of approximately 95,000 people in the heart of southern Ontario. Brantford has active cultural, arts, music and sports communities, and is known for its beautiful parks and community trails. The campus is surrounded by a great selection of student-oriented shops, restaurants and services.

Brantford is also conveniently located — downtown Toronto is just an hour away by car, Hamilton is a 20-minute drive, and in just 90 minutes you can be in the U.S. border city of Buffalo, New York. Laurier’s campus in Waterloo is only 50 minutes away by car. Both campuses are close to international airports: Pearson International Airport, located in Toronto, and Hamilton International Airport in Hamilton, Ontario.

Welcome to your new home

according to the United nations human Development index, Canada is one of the best places in the world to live.

International students studying full time at a Canadian university can now earn extra income to pay for their education by working off campus. There are over 1,000 student jobs on campus. Providing you meet the eligibility criteria (see www.wlu.ca/international), you may receive an off-campus work permit allowing you to work up to 20 hours a week during the school year and up to 40 hours a week during breaks and holidays. Students with study permits may also earn extra income by working on campus. International students may also apply to our co-op programs in Business, Economics, Arts and Science.

International students have the opportunity to gain paid work experience through Laurier’s co-operative education program. Students in Arts, Science, Business and Economics programs can gain 8-16 months of paid work experience to complement their academic studies. Students interested in co-op apply after their first year of studies. Students have had the opportunity of working for several international companies such as Pepsi, Procter and Gamble, S.C. MY LaURiER ExpERiEnCE Caleb Williams initially decided to come to Laurier because he felt like it “had more to offer than other universities, especially in terms of quality education.”

Williams, who is currently majoring in global studies, loves the program and has benefitted greatly from the program’s strong reputation and excellent professors.

“I must say choosing Laurier is a decision I will never regret because I am able to relate with people and my professors, who are always ready to help and interrelate with me.”

Outside of the classroom, Williams has gotten involved with the Future of Africa organization and really enjoy his time in Canada.

“My experience in Canada is like no other experience,” he says. “In coming here, I realize that I do things that I would never have thought to do.”

MY LaURiER ExpERiEnCE Having completed her undergraduate studies at Sharif University in Tehran, Iran, which is considered one of the best universities in Iran, Laleh Samarbakhsh was looking for a university of equal quality and excellence to pursue her master’s and doctoral studies.

Laleh chose Laurier’s MSc in mathematics for science and finance because it’s one of the first graduate programs in Canada that blends these two areas in an applied way. She then continued on at Laurier to pursue a PhD with a focus on financial economics.

“The professors’ patience and support helped me realize my abilities and enabled me to use my mathematical skills in Finance settings.”

“Canada is a very hospitable country. I found people very nice and welcoming, “she says. “The education fees in Canada are less compared to schools in Europe or America but you get the same quality, if not even better. “
