A TRIBUTE TO SPARKY
The Detroit Tigers family suffered a great loss withthe passing
of Hall of Fame manager SparkyAnderson on November 4, 2010.
Anderson managedat the major league level for 26 seasons, including
17with the Tigers from 1979-95. He recorded 1,331 victories as the
Tigers manager, the most in franchisehistory, and led the club to a
World Series title duringthe 1984 season.
Anderson played professionally for 11 seasons asan infielder in
the Brooklyn Dodgers, Los AngelesDodgers, Philadelphia Phillies,
Cleveland Indians,Milwaukee Braves and Washington Senators
organizations. He played at the major league level forone season,
seeing action in 152 games with thePhillies during the 1959 season.
He retired as a player following the 1963 season and began his
managerial career at the helm of the Triple A TorontoMaple Leafs in
the International League. He managedpennant-winning clubs at Single
A and Double A eachof the next four seasons before being hired as
thethird base coach for the San Diego Padres duringtheir inaugural
1969 season.
Following his one season as a coach at the majorleague level,
the Cincinnati Reds tabbed Anderson astheir manager on October 8,
1969. At 36 years oldwhen the 1970 season began, he was the
youngestmanager in the major leagues at the time and a relative
unknown. He wasted little time making aname for himself, guiding
the Reds to 102 victoriesand a trip to the World Series. He led the
Big RedMachine to the World Series four times during hisnine
seasons at the helm, winning back-to-backWorld Series titles in
1975 and 1976.
Anderson managed the Reds through the 1978 season and began the
final chapter of his managerialcareer as the manager of the Detroit
Tigers duringthe 1979 season. Unlike the star-laden clubs he guided
in Cincinnati, his Detroit club was full of youngplayers who had
yet to make a name for themselvesat the major league level. His
1979 roster includedKirk Gibson, Jack Morris, Lance Parrish, Dan
Petry,Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker.
The core group of players learned the game underhis guidance and
in 1984 put together one of thegreatest seasons in franchise
history. The 1984 clubposted a 35-5 record in the first 40 games
and led theAmerican League East from start to finish. The
Tigersswept the Kansas City Royals in the AmericanLeague
Championship Series and then defeated theSan Diego Padres in five
games to claim Detroitsfirst World Series title since 1968.

A leader in the diverse fields of sports, entertainment and
business development, Michael Ilitch enters his 19th fullseason as
Owner/Director of the Detroit Tigers. Was a driving force behind
the creation of the Tigers spectacular new home, Comerica Park, and
contributed
more than 60 percent of the financing for the $300 million
facility. Served a key role in designing the new ballpark, bringing
years of entertainment experience to the efforts that
resulted in many of the features that make Comerica Park unique.
Ilitch's acquisition of the Tigers on August 26, 1992 was the
culmination of a long association with the club that
saw him originally sign a minor league players contract with the
organization in his early 20s. Ilitchs playing career was cut short
due to a knee injury after his third season with the minor league
club. Founded Little Caesars Pizza in 1959 with his wife,
MarianLittle Caesars, which is one of the top international
pizza chains with restaurants on five continents, celebrated its
50-year anniversary on May 8, 2009...in 2006, introduced a Little
Caesars veterans program offering qualified honorably discharged
and disabled veterans a Little Caesars franchise with significant
reductions in fees.
Committed to business ventures in their hometown of Detroit, the
Ilitches purchased the Detroit Red Wings in 1982 and have built
them into an elite NHL powerhouse with four Stanley Cup titles in
the last 13 seasons.
Also purchased Olympia Entertainment, the management company for
Joe Louis Arena, the Fox Theatre and seven other venues.
While many businesses were leaving Detroit's urban center, the
Ilitches in 1987 purchased the neglected Fox Theatre, a 1928
landmark on the famous Woodward Avenue...with great effort, the
building was restored to its original splendor and was reopened
with 5,000 seats in November of 1988it is now among the highest
grossing theatres of its size worldwide.
In 1989, the family further committed its efforts to reviving
Detroit's downtown by relocating its suburban Little Caesars
headquarters to the Fox Theatre's adjacent 10-story office
buildingin recent years, the area around the Fox and Comerica Park
has seen significant development, including the Ilitch-owned City
Theatre and Hockeytown Caf.
Created Olympia Development, L.L.C. to focus on projects in
downtown Detroitin 1999 Ilitch Holdings, Inc.,was formed to provide
the familys primary business interests in the food, sports and
entertainment industries with professional services.
Ilitch has received Presidential Citations from three separate
United States Presidents -- Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and
Ronald Reagan for feeding the hungry through his Love Kitchen.
In 2003, Ilitch was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame...he
was inducted into both the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and U.S.
Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
Ilitch has been honored by many for his tireless efforts in
Detroit and surrounding communities with many awards, including the
Distinguished Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award from
the Michigan Department of Health for promoting and demonstrating
exemplary performance in advancing principles of human rights,
equality and positive social change and most recently received a
Shining Light Regional Cooperation Award for exemplary regional
leadership.
In 2007, Ilitch was given the Secretarys Award, the highest
honor given to a civilian by the United States Department of
Veterans Affairs, for his Little Caesars Veterans Program to help
veterans realize their dreams of owning a business.
In 2008, Ilitch was rated the number one owner in professional
sports by Turnkey Sports and Entertainment. In 2010, Ilitch was
voted the most effective team owner in the NHL by a Sports Business
Journal survey.
