PARTICIPATION IN A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM is a great way to meet people in the industry, get a better understanding of where you might fit and gain knowledge about the process of searching for a job. Project Protégé, the mentorship program partnership between City of Calgary and the Faculties of Social Work and Kinesiology, offers a select number of U of C Social Work and Kinesiology students the opportunity to connect with a City of Calgary mentor as they navigate the transition from student to professional life.

A primary objective of Project Protege is to provide students with a deeper understanding of the job search process. “This program, and specifically my mentor, changed my entire outlook beginning from what type of jobs I should be looking for, to how to highlight my sills and experiences accurately on my resume”, explains Seemeen Walji, a fourth year Bachelor of Social Work student who participated in Project Protégé last year.

Through site visits Seemeen developed a clearer picture of the social work field and where she might fit in that picture. She was given the opportunity to select organizations that were of interest and, if possible, her mentor arranged the visit. Through the various site visits Seemeen was able to see first hand the work environment, ask questions about specific roles and determine if it would be an environment she might be interested in working in. “The site visits were a really good way to test my fit in a certain organization or with a certain client group.”

Seemeen feels that this experience has helped her to develop a larger network of contacts within the field of work that interests her most. She also feels that she has an advantage over others who are not as knowledgeable about the job search process. “I am more confident in the jobs I apply for and in articulating why I am an ideal candidate for the job.”

Through the sharing of expertise and knowledge, mentors can help students reach their career goals. “Having a mentor is like having someone committed to your success”, says Walji. Since being in the program Seemeen has been able to reach the interview stage with most of the jobs she has applied for. “My mentor taught me how to market myself,” and in the current economic environment, that is a critical skill to have. She was able to secure a summer job with the Faculty of Social Work as well as a part-time job in her field. It also helped her gain the confidence and skilled she needed to apply for a scholarship and was awarded $1000 towards tuition for final year.
