  • EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS2

Welcome to Equal Justice Works 25th Anniversary Gala!

Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the accomplishments of this incredible organization and its 25 years of mobilizing law students and lawyers to work for justice on behalf of underserved communities and causes. We especially want to thank all of you who continue to support Equal Justice Works to ensure that the organization remains a powerful voice for the next 25 years. Thanks also to the staff of Equal Justice Works, our many partners, our member law schools and students who are the innovators of our programming and continuously seek to improve the impact of our initiatives.

In 1986, Equal Justice Works was founded by law students from 14 law schools who had a dream of expanding legal services to under-represented people and increasing opportunities for law students and graduates to practice in the field of public interest. Today, Equal Justice Works has grown to become a significant national player in the legal nonprofit community, with 200 law school members, a summer program with 700 students, 170 lawyers in the field fighting against injustice, and more than 1,000 former Fellows who continue to work full-time in public service.

Tonight is more than just celebrating the past it is about the future. Today, more than ever before, we need to ensure that Equal Justice Works can provide more opportunities for lawyers committed to public interest law and to helping those communities who need it most.

Again, thank you for your support. We hope you enjoy the evening.

The Honorable Eric H. Holder, Jr.Attorney General of the United States

Eric H. Holder, Jr. was sworn in as the 82nd Attorney General of the United States on February 3, 2009 by Vice President Joe Biden.

In 1997, Mr. Holder was named by President Clinton to be the Deputy Attorney General, the first African-American named to that post. Prior to that he served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. In 1988, Mr. Holder was nominated by President Reagan to become an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

Mr. Holder, a native of New York City, attended public schools there, graduating from Stuyvesant High School where he earned a Regents Scholarship. He

attended Columbia College, majored in American History, and graduated in 1973. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1976.

While in law school, he clerked at the N.A.A.C.P. Legal Defense Fund and the Department of Justices Criminal Division. Upon graduating, he moved to Washington and joined the Department of Justice as part of the Attorney Generals Honors Program. He was assigned to the newly formed Public Integrity Section in 1976 and was tasked to investigate and prosecute official corruption on the local, state and federal levels.

Prior to becoming Attorney General, Mr. Holder was a litigation partner at Covington & Burling LLP in Washington. He also served on the Equal Justice Works Board of Directors from 2002 through 2004.

The Honorable Deval PatrickGovernor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Deval Patrick was reelected to a second term as Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in November 2010. Governor Patricks life has charted a path from the South Side of Chicago to the U.S. Justice Department, Fortune 500 boardrooms, and the Massachusetts State House.

First elected in 2006, Governor Patrick has maintained or expanded the states investment in critical growth sectors while delivering timely budgets and cutting state spending. Governor Patrick funded public education at the highest levels in the history of the Commonwealth and its school reform initiatives earned Massachusetts the top spot in the national Race to the Top competition. He has

also worked to position the state as a global leader in biotech, bio pharmaceuticals and IT, and as a national leader in clean energy.

Governor Patrick is a graduate of Harvard College and of Harvard Law School. After clerking for a federal judge, he led a successful career in the private sector as an attorney and business executive, rising to senior executive positions at Texaco and Coca-Cola. Across the country, public defender offices are underfunded, understaffed, and drowning in untenable caseloads. With too few public defenders handling too many cases, those who cannot afford representation are being denied their fundamental right to counsel, and many are languishing in jail at taxpayers expense. Equal Justice Works and the Southern Public Defender Training Center have launched the Public Defender Corps to combat this crisis by placing exceptional lawyers in hard-pressed public defender

programs, providing these lawyers with intensive training and support. The ultimate aim is to raise the quality of representation and ensure that indigent defendants have access to justice.
