Missy Soboleski was hired as head volleyballcoach at Edinboro University on February 3, 2005.Soboleski replaced Dale Flickinger, who was hired onan interim basis in late July to replace Lynn Theehs, who went to the University of Maine.
All told, Soboleski has led Edinboro to five NCAADivision II Atlantic Region playoff berths in six years, along with trips to the PSAC Playoffs five times. Sheowns a 15272 record as Edinboro's head coach. Herteams have won at least 23 matches in five of her sixseasons.
Soboleski has won 285 career matches, good for41st in Division II in career victories.
The 2010 campaign wasone of the most successful in Boro history. TheFighting Scots ended theyear at 306, marking themost wins since the 1990squad won 33 matches. Italso marked just the fifth30win season in schoolhistory. Edinboro brokethe school record for consecutive wins, running offa 16game winning streak.During that stretch theScots lost just eightgames.
Edinboro finished asthe runnerup in thePSAC, losing in fourgames to Clarion in thefinals. The Fighting Scots
won the right to host the Atlantic Regional. After awin over Lock Haven the Fighting Scots were eliminated by California(Pa.) in the regional semifinals.
Edinboro finished the 2009 campaign with a 2313record, finishing third in the PSAC West with a 136record. The Fighting Scots made their fourth trip tothe NCAA Playoffs under Soboleski, defeating Clarionin the Atlantic Region quarterfinals before falling toLock Haven in the semifinals.
After a slow start, Soboleski returned theFighting Scots to the ranks of the elite in the AtlanticRegion in her first season. Edinboro finished its firstyear under Soboleski’s tutelage with a 2616 ledger, and was selected for the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
The 26 wins were particularly impressive sincethe Fighting Scots were struggling at 712 enteringthe final weekend in September. They would go onto win 17 of their final 19 regular season matches toqualify for the PSAC Tournament with a third placefinish in the Western Division.
With a fourgame win over Millersville in thequarterfinals, Edinboro reached the semifinals beforefalling in three games to Lock Haven. The same fateheld true in the Atlantic Regional, as the FightingScots defeated Mount Olive in three games in thequarterfinals, but then lost in three games to LeesMcRae in the semifinals.
The Fighting Scots weren’t as fortunate in the2006 campaign, as a young squad lost five of its lastsix matches to finish at 1917. Two of those lossescame in five games.
2007 saw the Fighting Scots finish with a 2811record, the most wins since the 1998 edition alsowon 28 matches. Edinboro enjoyed a successful playoff run, reaching the PSAC Tournament semifinals, then falling in the finals of the Atlantic RegionalChampionship.
A young 2008 squad devoid of any seniors posted a 269 record, finishing second in the PSAC Westand qualifying for the Atlantic Regional for the thirdtime in four years. Soboleski’s ability to mold a teamwithout any seniors and with four freshmen playing
key roles did not go unnoticed. She was selected the AVCA AtlanticRegion Coach of the Year.
Soboleski is wellknown in local volleyball circles. She has previouslycoached at two local institutions, Mercyhurst and Gannon. She tookover the Edinboro program after serving as the head coach atMercyhurst from 19992004.
At Mercyhurst, she inherited a volleyball program that had not hada winning season since 1993, had won only five games in four years inthe Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and hadrecorded just 26 wins in five previous seasons. She proceeded to leadthe Lady Lakers to three winning seasons in six years at the helm, including a 218 finish in 2002, winning the Southern Division championship. The 2001 team went 1916, and her 2003 team was 1615.
Prior to taking over at Mercyhurst, Soboleski spent four seasons as thehead coach at her alma mater, Gannon, where she was previously a standout player. Her 199598 Lady Knight editions reached the GLIAC Playoffstwice, including a 2114 record in her first season, with Gannon reaching theNCAA Division II Playoffs. Soboleski's final team was 1816 and qualified forthe GLIAC Playoffs. She was an assistant coach under Gerry (Burbules)Vensel, a member of the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1994.
"It has always been our intention to keep Edinboro University volleyball in the forefront of the PSAC and the region," related Director of
Athletics Bruce Baumgartner at the time of her hiring. "We think coachSoboleski has what it takes to continue Edinboro University's winningtradition. We feel our program is in very good hands. Missy brings agreat deal of energy and experience to our program, and she is veryfamiliar with what Edinboro volleyball represents. We also like the factthat she enjoyed an excellent graduation rate at Mercyhurst.”
A native of Rootstown, Ohio, Soboleski graduated from Gannon in1993 with a bachelor's degree in Education and a minor in SportsManagement and Health & Physical Education. A fouryear letterwinnerfor the Lady Knights from 1990 to 1993, Gannon was 11622 during thatperiod. That included three straight trips to the Elite Eight to concludeher playing career.
Soboleski enjoyed a distinguished career as a player, serving as a cocaptain in 1993. The outside hitter earned a spot on the Hamot ClassicAllTournament team as a senior, then capped her career by earning AllTournament accolades in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. Shetotaled 14 kills and 16 digs in the regional final win over Slippery Rock, propelling Gannon to its third straight trip to the Elite Eight.
Soboleski resides in Edinboro with her three children Madison (11)and twins Braeden and Abigale (8). While at Gannon she also served asthe SWA/Assistant Athletic Director.
Jimmy Chan2nd YearBrockport State ‘00
Jimmy Chan is in his thirdseason as the assistant coachafter being hired in July of 2009.Edinbor has compiled 33 wins inhis two seasons, with backtoback trips to the NCAA Division IIAtlantic Regional.
Chan has 16 years of experience as a volleyball coach at various levels, including a fiveyearstint as the head coach of the St.John Fisher volleyball team. Heposted a 6585 record from 2002
06. His 2005 edition finished with a 1615 record. The Cardinals finishedthird in the Empire 8 Conference regular season then reached theEmpire 8 Tournament semifinals. Chan was recognized as the Empire 8Coach of the Year. He also guided the Cardinals to 16 wins in 2002, 2003and 2004.
“We are extremely excited to have Jimmy join the volleyball program,” related Soboleski. “He brings a wealth of volleyball knowledgeand experience that will help us tremendously on the court as well asrecruiting.”
Chan served as a math teacher at Canandaigua Academy inCanandaigua, NY, since 2000. He has also been heavily involved incoaching club teams, including the Niagara Frontier Volleyball Club from200709.
Chan is a graduate of Brockport State, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a certification in Secondary Educationin 2000. He completed work on his master’s degree in MathematicEducation in 2007 from Brockport State.
The Edinboro University volleyball team enjoyed one of its bestseasons ever in 2010, finishing with a 306 record. That tied for the fourthhighest win total in school history was the most since the 1990 squad won33 matches.
Along the way the Fighting Scots earned their fourth straight tripto the NCAA Division II Playoffs and advanced to the Pennsylvania StateAthletic Conference championship match for the first time since 2004.Five players earned AllPSAC honors.
But one thing was missing, the one thing that matters the most –championships. After losing in the PSAC Tournament finals, Edinborogained a reprieve when it was selected as the host of the NCAA DivisionII Atlantic Regional. Following a win over Lock Haven in the quarterfinals, the Fighting Scots lost to California(Pa.) in the semifinals, provingthat it is indeed hard to beat a team four times in a year.
Head coach Missy Soboleski hopes to rectify things this year.Entering her seventh season at the helm, Soboleski has enjoyed greatsuccess, leading Edinboro to five NCAA playoff appearances in her sixseasons. Her Fighting Scots have been particularly impressive the lastfour years, averaging 27 wins a year.
“PSAC and Elite Eight are very realistic goals for our 2011 volleyballteam,” Soboleski boldly predicted. “I feel we have one of the hardestworking and focused teams in the region. We aren’t the type of teamwho just says they want the title, we are the team who is obsessed inreaching that goal. We return some very competitive athletes andbrought in some, as well.”
Soboleski admits that middle hitter Beyaca Martin and liberoMaureen Tilert will be greatly missed. Both were first team AllPSACselections. “Moe and Beyaca will be tough to replace,” notedSoboleski. “Moe was one of the most competitive athletes I’ve ever
coached. She controlled the defenseon the floor andshe made the people who playedaround her veryrelaxed and atease. However, she isquick to point outthat it’s hard tooverlook the likesof returning AllPSAC performersGina Boothe,Megan Osysko andSeth Sullivan.Sullivan, in fact, missed the postseason due to illness and the PSACWest Rookie of theYear no doubtwould have madea huge difference.“Our returningplayers are a bigstrength this season,” Soboleskistressed. “Oursenior class has alot of confidenceand really wantsthe PSAC title. We
will also be bigger at the net, probably our biggest since I came toEdinboro. Blocking will be an offense as well as a defense. SethSullivan, the PSAC West Rookie of the Year, will bring so much to thecourt. She played like a veteran as a freshman, leading the team in killsin many matches. We couldn’t ask for more of a freshman.
“The incoming freshmen just add some great depth in all the positions and will make for some serious competition in practice.”Soboleski added that all seven freshmen have the potential to make animpact, with the first two weeks of preseason drills providing a key asto who can handle the pressure.
After losing a key performer in the late stages of the season eachof the last two years,Soboleski’s biggest concern is keeping everyonehealthy. “Ellie (Lininger)wasn’t at full strengthlast year and losing Seth(Sullivan) for the playoffslast season definitelyhurt our run for thetitle.”
The Fighting Scotsopen up 2011 competition in the Falcon FestTournament hosted byFairmont State, facingfour WVIAC squads intwo days. Soboleski willlook to challenge herteam in the preconference matches before facing the rigors of PSACcompetition.
“As usual, we wantto prepare our team forour tough PSAC schedule,” she pointed out. “We are opening up withFairmont and then will really be challenged in Texas. The pressure willbe on us from the start of conference play. We need to win at homebut we need to win on the road, as well. We have some tough regionmatches on the road and everyone is critical for regional seeding.”
The “Texas” that Soboleski referred to the ASU Invitational, a rigorous tournament hosted by Angelo State on September 910. TheRambelles were 1912 a year ago, losing in the Lone Star Conference titlematch to West Texas A&M. Edinboro will also face SoutheasternOklahoma State, Tarleton State and Abilene Christian. Abilene Christianwas 276, finished the year ranked 22nd nationally, and reached theSouth Central Regional semifinals. Tarleton State was 2310, whileSoutheastern Oklahoma finished at 1015.
Here’s a look at the 2011 Fighting Scots, positionbyposition:Here’s a look at the 2010 Fighting Scots, positionbyposition:
SettersIn Megan Osysko the Fighting Scots possess one of the top setters
in the country. A 5’7” senior, Osysko ranks third in career assists with3,321. A year ago she earned first team AllPSAC West honors and wasalso named to the AVCA AllAtlantic Region Team for the secondstraight year. Osysko led the PSAC in assists and ranked ninth in DivisionII a year ago, finishing with 1,317. That was also the seventhhighest season total. She added 288 digs, good for fourth on the team, tied forfirst in service aces (4) and totaled 145 kills.
“Megan leads the way with three years under her belt,” relatedSoboleski. “She did a great job last year running our offense. However,

we may look to run a 62.” Soboleski feels the addition of freshmen Brittany Centrobie and
Julie Nolen affords her the luxury of running the 62. Both are very athletic and former Ohio standouts. Centrobie is 5’6” and holds the seasonand career assists records at North Royalton High School. She was asecond team alldistrict selection as a senior. Nolen is 5’8” and starredat Franklin Heights High School. She was a fouryear starter who earnedhonorable mention alldistrict accolades.
Middle HittersSeniors Gina Boothe and Kelcie Hellmer provide the Boro with a
strong pair of middle hitters, although Boothe will see a lot of time atopposite. Boothe is a twotime AllPSAC honoree and was named the2008 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. She is also a twotime AVCA AllAtlantic Region selection. The 6’1” Boothe finished with a teamhigh398 kills after finishing third on the team in kills her first two years. Shealso ranked second on the team with 81 total blocks. Boothe enters herfinal year with 956 kills, needing 44 to become the 12th Boro player with1,000 career kills.
Hellmer proved a very pleasant surprise after giving up basketballto return to volleyball, a sport she had not played since high school. The6’0” senior was particularly effective as a blocker, and should be evenmore effective with a year under her belt. She totaled 199 kills and ateamhigh 101 total blocks.
Depth figures to come from a pair of freshmen with good size.Sara Aultz is the tallest Fighting Scot at 6’2” and was a standout in bothvolleyball and basketball at Orrville High School, helping the Red Ridersto district championships in both sports. Cherene O’Hara is 6’1” andcame all the way across the country to play for the Fighting Scots. Shehails from the state of Washington and was a threeyear starter at KentMeridian High School, where she earned allstate honors as a senior.
“Kelcie (Hellmer) will lead the way in the middle,” Soboleski stated.“She’s a smart athlete on the court, is very quick and focused. Gina(Boothe), Sara (Autz) and Cherene (O’Hara) will all compete for one ofthe middle positions. The freshmen bring blocking and quickness. Welook for both to contribute.”
Outside HittersThree returnees and two newcomers make for a strong position at
outside hitter. Leading the way is Seth Sullivan, a first team AllPSACWest selection and the PSAC West Freshman of the Year a year ago.The 5’10” sophomore finished with 343 kills, good for second on theteam, despite missing the PSAC and NCAA tournaments. She added296 digs, second on the team, and tied for the team lead with 40 serviceaces.
Seniors Ellie Lininger and Angela Groshner have seen plenty ofaction over the last three years. Lininger, 5’11”, missed the latter part ofher sophomore season and the early portion of her junior year followingknee surgery. Over a yearandahalf removed from the surgery sheshould be 100 percent healthy. Lininger appeared in 78 games with 115kills, 117 digs and 34 total blocks. Groshner, 5’8”, is best known for herdefensive skills. She finished with 136 kills while ranking third in digswith 291.
Another pair of Ohio recruits, freshmen Tabby Meeks and BrittanyFlynn, figure to push the trio of returnees for playing time. Meeks is5’8” and played for a powerful Pagua Franciscan High School program, helping the Bruins to backtoback state championships in 2008 and2009. She earned honorable mention alldistrict honors as a senior.Flynn, also 5’8”, played at Magnificat High School and was a twotimehonorable mention alldistrict choice and earned honorable mention allstate accolades as a senior.
“We have experience returning in Seth (Sullivan), who was our OH1 last year, along with Ellie (Lininger) and Ang (Groshner) returning, aswell,” noted Soboleski. “This is a tough position to predict as we addedTabby Meeks and Brittany Flynn, who could contribute as freshmen. We are very competitive in this position, which is a great problem tohave. Passing and ball control will probably determine who plays.”
Soboleski noted that Boothe has played on the rightside for threeyears and has a distinct advantage at opposite. “If we run a 62 offenseEllie (Lininger), Cherene (O’Hara) and Sara (Aultz) will all be competingfor the second spot,” she added. “All have the ability to play there.”
Liberos/Defensive SpecialistsSoboleski isn’t about to underplay the loss of libero Maureen Tilert,
who went on to be named Edinboro’s Senior Female Athlete of theYear. She holds Edinboro’s career and season records for digs, and hervalue as a leader on the court was even more impressive.
“We suffered a tremendous loss with Moe, but we have plenty ofathletes who will compete for the position,” Soboleski emphasized.“Ang (Groshner) will be the frontrunner as she has three years of experience and is one of the best ball control players returning.”
Soboleski went on to stress that sophomore Danielle King andfreshmen Haley Marett, Brittany Flynn and Brittany Coles will also compete for the position. “Again, this is a position that is wide open and wereally won’t have a good pulse on it until we see who is the most competitive in preseason.”
King saw limited action a year ago while playing in 75 games. The5’7” sophomore finished with 94 digs and 10 service aces. Marett is a5’4” freshman from Wilmington Area(Pa.) High School. She is a threetime alldistrict selection who helped the Greyhounds to the District 10championship as a senior. Coles is a 5’6” defensive specialist who hailsfrom Norwin(Pa.) High School. She earned first team allsection honors.

} PSAC OverviewOriginating in 1951 to administer and pro‐
mote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania StateAthletic Conference has evolved into one of theNCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate confer‐ences.
The first major step came in 1977, whenbased on a growing interest, the league reor‐ganized to provide a structure for its women’sprograms. Only three years later, lacking a stan‐dard competitive division, league voted toreclassify the entire conference to NCAADivision II.
Among its recent enhancements the PSAChas expanded its membership twice during afour‐year span. The first occurred during the2008‐09 academic year with the addition of full‐time members Gannon University andMercyhurst College, and associate memberLong Island University‐C.W. Post. Over the pastyear, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed towelcome Seton Hill University as an associatemember to begin play in field hockey during the2011‐12 campaign. The membership now con‐sists of 16 full‐time institutions and the twoassociate members.
All of the league’s full‐time members arelocated within the Commonwealth ofPennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largestone‐state conference in the NCAA. The leaguehas also grown to share the distinctions as: Thelargest conference in Division II, the largest foot‐ball‐playing conference in the NCAA, and, with23, the conference that sponsors the mostchampionships at the Division II level.
Highly competitive on a regional andnational level, PSAC schools annually combineto send nearly one‐third of its teams into NCAApostseason play. Ultimately, the membership’ssuccess has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 indi‐vidual title winners.
While proud of its athletic accomplish‐ments, the league also has evolved into one ofDivision II’s finest from an academic standpoint.Today, nearly one‐third of the PSAC’s estimated6,300 participants are honored each year as“Scholar‐Athletes” for maintaining a grade‐pointaverage of 3.25 or better ‐ a total that has near‐ly doubled since PSAC Scholar‐Athletes werefirst recognized in the mid‐1990s.
Although all 16 current institutions aremembers of Division II, seven league schoolsalso compete at the Division I level in selectsports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 stu‐dents and claim over 710,000 alumni, including483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.
The PSAC is governed by the presidents ofthe 16 member institutions. It employs a com‐missioner, an associate and assistant commis‐sioner, and a director of media relations at itsheadquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
