Restoring Drinking Water in DjiboutiA young girl joins in a school event in the city of Balbala, the capital of Djibouti, a small country in the Horn of Africa. Here a persistent drought continues to threaten the lives of women and children. With less than half the normal rainfall since September 2007, some 120,000 people are experiencing a crushing lack of food, health care, nutrition support, drinking water and sanitation facilities. In 2010, UNICEF helped restore drinking water sources and increase hygiene supplies for 75 percent of the affected families. In 2011, UNICEF is adding 30 more clean water sources to help save lives.

For more than 60 years, children and their families have raised over $164 million through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. It started in Philadelphia, when Mary Emma Allison and her kids followed a parade of children to a department store booth where collections were being taken for UNICEF’s powdered milk program. UNICEF Responds to

Pakistan Flooding

After the 2010 flooding in Pakistan, UNICEF provided winter clothes, blankets, school supplies and nutrition for some 180,000 children. One of the largest emergency responses in UNICEF’s history, the organization and its partners provided clean water for 2.8 million people daily, measles and polio vaccines for 9 million children, and 1,550 temporary learning centers like this one holding class in the village of Lal Bux Bhugio in Jacobabad District.

Aid Rushed to Kyrgyzstan

Families

Zulhumar Amanbaev kisses her son, Abdulmutalib, in their home in Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan. In spring 2010, the violent overthrow of the Kyrgyzstan government became a regional humanitarian crisis when some 400,000 people were displaced. UNICEF responded quickly to help women and children by providing emergency supplies to hospitals in the city of Osh and in Jalal-Abad Province as well as family water kits, temporary learning spaces, psychosocial services and more.

In South Delhi, India, poor, marginalized artisans came together to form a group called Lok Kala Kriti Samooh. UNICEF Helps Rebuild Haiti’s

Schools

The first day of school in a UNICEF tent classroom was a happy day for nine-year-old Yolanda Senatus, who lost both her home and school in the devastating 2010 earthquake that struck Haiti. After the earthquake destroyed some 5,000 schools, UNICEF helped create learning centers and provided educational materials so 720,000 children could resume their lessons. Yolanda, like thousands of other children, received crayons, exercise books, pencils and other school supplies.
