WorkBoat’s annual Construc-tion Survey is compiled from questionnaires, boats

covered in the magazine over the past 12 months, websites, newsletters, press releases, financial reports, and various other sources. Several yards have only one boat listed. That does not mean the yards have no other vessels under contract or underway. For various reasons, certain operators do not want their boats included in the survey, and some yards request that contracts not be disclosed. Consequently, the number of actual vessels under contract, under construction, or delivered over the past year is higher than our numbers reflect.

The total number of vessels in this year’s survey is 564, compared to 535 last year — a small increase.

However, what the numbers don’t re-veal is that last year’s total reflects the completion of a number of long-term contracts, while this year’s numbers reflect vessel owners’ willingness to pick up options and sign new contracts. That’s a big step forward after the in-dustry had been affected in the last few years by the recession and the Deepwa-ter Horizon disaster.

It’s been a tough year for some. SeaArk Marine, Monticello, Ark.,

announced earlier this year that it was temporarily suspending acceptance of new boat orders until market condi-tions show a big improvement in the government and industrial sectors. (The survey lists SeaArk’s new construction during 2011 prior to its suspension of new orders.)

Meanwhile, Derecktor Shipyards, Bridgeport, Conn., recently filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in five years, citing the depressed economy, a lack of new construction opportunities, and expenses tied to the building-out of its Bridgeport facility.

mer owner who was working in sales at the boatyard, is now the company’s CEO.

Nichols Brothers will join Vigor Industrial’s US Fab division in the construction of a new 144-car ferry for Washington State Ferries. Details of the agreement between the two shipyards had not been released as of early Feb-ruary. Vigor also recently announced that it would finalize a deal by the end of February to acquire Alaska Ship & Drydock.

With the economy showing some signs of life and a revival of activity in the U.S. Gulf, it will be interesting to see what numbers the shipyard industry registers in next year’s survey.
