Taking on the FutureAnniversaries are a time to celebrate the past and embark upon the future. In 2011, as The Community Foundation approached its 60th anniversary, we emphasized the latter.

During our first six decades, we kept the promise of our founders — to create a “powerful, positive resource for the welfare and health of the community.” The mindset and energy that drove The Foundation in 2011 looked ahead.

They reflected a vision reborn of what Herkimer and Oneida counties need today and can be tomorrow. They reflected a role redefined from philanthropic partner and responsive grant maker to collaborative leader in advancing solutions for reaching our goals.

That momentum fueled important accomplishments all year. Among them:• Our board set in motion The Foundation’s

new strategic plan: “A Journey of Leadership and Community Growth.”

• The Foundation was given an opportunity to be at the table in redesigning the

relationship between state government and businesses as your president & CEO was named to the Governor’s Mohawk Valley Regional Economic Development Council.

• The Foundation’s leadership in addressing our region’s unacceptably high rate of illiteracy advanced again. With support from the M&T Bank/Partners Trust Bank Charitable Fund and a major donor, our board approved funding the position of executive director of The Literacy Coalition of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, as well as funding a two-county literacy plan.

• The Speaker Series, made possible by our Corporate Partners Program, was launched with an inspiring presentation from Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

• Local giants in philanthropy and human service were recognized with the presentation of the Rosamond Childs Award for Community Philanthropy to Theodore “Ted” Max M.D. and the Community Impact Award to Hope House.

• Grants made by The Foundation totaled nearly $3.6 million, including a record $2,029,846 in grants from discretionary funds. One highlight was an innovative mini grants program that enabled agencies impacted by the economic times to continue to build capacity through grants that were easier to apply for and processed more quickly. Further details of 2011 follow in this

Acknowledging where we’ve been, but decidedly aimed at where our new leadership role is taking us, for your Community Foundation, 2011 was indeed a year of taking on the future.

Toys. We think of them as play things, providing fun, but having little value otherwise.

In the Adaptive Toy Library of the Madison-Oneida BOCES Center for Instructional Support, however, toys play a much more powerful role. They change lives.

The library’s collection of nontraditional toys helps special needs students develop motor skills; build cognitive, visual and social skills; and increase their mobility and independence. Not typically available in a retail setting, the toys are used in the classroom and are loaned for home use, extending the learning benefit.

A $4,114 grant from The Community Foundation’s Agnes W. Sweet Fund made it possible for the library to nearly double the size of its toy collection — to more than 85 items. The grant also funded related needs such as batteries, storage boxes and shelves.

From associating cause with effect, to visual tracking and eye-hand coordination, the Adaptive Toys help students up to age 21 develop 16 basic skills that improve their quality of life. Making Sure After School isn’t an Afterthought

From academic assistance to a plethora of activities for building life skills, the Boys and Girls Clubs’ after-school programs provide quality care for youths.

If it takes a village to raise a child, then the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Mohawk Valley provide such villages Utica and Rome.

The Clubs’ after-school programs at Columbus School and Bellamy Elementary School offer free care for children, many of whom would otherwise spend the time without supervision. This child-centered service delivers the

wraparound care that working and lower-income families need. Hundreds of children reap the benefits of hands-on, adult-guided activities, including reading and tutoring — to improve literacy, nurtured arts, guided recreation, nutritious snacks and exercise.

The program helps foster the future success of not only the youths involved, but of the villages of which they will be a part.

In 2011, grants totaling $65,000 from The Community Foundation helped meet the staffing and related needs of these vital programs.

Understanding that not everyone returns to a welcoming home.

Recognizing the challenges that substandard learning facilities create for some students.

Empathizing with those victimized first by disaster and then theft.

These could have been emotions expressed by F.X. Matt II, or Alfred and Elizabeth Duffy — in whose names Lillian “Duff” Matt has established two donor-advised funds at The Community Foundation. But they are not. They are the sentiments of Duff’s grandchildren, Duffy Lemire, Nicholas Lemire and Eliza Matt. Not only do they reflect the strong philanthropic nature of the Matt and Duffy families, they are indication the family’s legacy will remain in good hands.

As donor-advisor to the F.X. Matt II Memorial Fund, and Alfred & Elizabeth Duffy Fund, which honor the memories of her husband and parents, respectively,

Duff Matt supports causes that were important to her loved ones and that continue to make a difference in the community. Prevalent among them are education and programs for youths and the arts.

Duff points to a $3,000 grant from the F. X. Matt II Memorial Fund to Watson Williams Elementary School in Utica for a speaker in the “Rap, Rhythm and Rhyme Literacy Project” as especially meaningful and symbolic of how even a modest grant can have a big impact.

“It touched an entire school system, kids who spoke 19 different languages,” she says. “When you can help that many kids and enrich their learning experience, it’s a beautiful thing.”

For Duff and her family, nurturing such beauty will remain a way of life.

“Growing up, we were taught that we must leave the world a better place,” she adds. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Donors who wish to pursue a charitable passion, honor a loved one, or establish a family tradition of giving can design a fund to suit their needs.

We offer a variety of fund options, all available with a minimum gift of $10,000. The fund can be started by giving the minimum all at once or as an Acorn Fund, by giving over three years with an initial gift of $5,000.

Trust and CertaintyThe Community Foundation provides a simple, powerful and personal approach to giving. We are a connecting partner — helping you identify and support causes that reflect your personal values and priorities. We are stewards following your specific instructions to solve problems, lift the human spirit and anchor the community.

We make giving easy by providing a wide range of giving vehicles: cash, stock, property, life insurance and real estate. Charitable donations can be made during your lifetime or planned for the future through your estate. Gifts to The Foundation benefit from the maximum tax advantages and are appreciated regardless of size.

Fulfilling your Charitable GoalsWe offer a variety of fund types through which you can address your charitable vision: a Field-of-Interest, Designated, Donor-Advised or Scholarship fund; or you can create an Unrestricted fund and allow our Grants Committee to use its expertise in responding to the most urgent community needs.

Over the past 60 years, we have established funds for donors concerned about virtually every type of human or societal need. The grants report starting on page 6 indicates the multitude of causes that benefited from our funds in 2011.

Bequest by WillIncluding a charitable bequest in your will is an easy way to transfer assets to charity and make a lasting gift to your community. When you make such a gift to The Community Foundation, we establish a special fund that becomes your personal legacy (also see Our Legacy Society on page 38).

You create the legacy while continuing to enjoy the assets you need to maintain your lifestyle. What’s more, you are able to re-distribute some or all of your assets tax-free.

Examples of language that can be used in your will for a bequest can be found on The Foundation’s website, www.foundationhoc.org or provided by our staff for use with your professional advisor.

Ways to GiveLifetime Gift: Watch your philanthropic dollars make a difference and make a personal connection to your community by establishing a fund now.

Bequest: Leave a legacy by making a gift through your will.

Charitable Remainder Trust: Receive income from a trust and designate the remainder to create a philanthropic fund. You receive an immediate charitable deduction for a portion of the gift and may avoid capital gains taxes.

Charitable Lead Trust: Create a trust that stipulates a dollar amount to go to charity over

a specific period of time. At the end of the trust term, the principal of the trust passes back to an individual beneficiary.

Retirement Fund: Gift the assets from your retirement fund by naming The Foundation as a beneficiary. You can start a philanthropic fund and receive a charitable deduction.

Life Insurance: The Foundation can be designated as the owner and/or beneficiary of the policy.

General Gifts: Cash or stock gifts of any size are welcomed and appreciated. They can be made in honor or memory of a special person or event in the donor’s life, and can be added to an existing fund or placed in the general endowment.

Serving in the United States military is a job not always done or left on the battlefield. It’s one that many veterans carry with them in various forms, for indefinite periods of time.

Today, it’s understood specialized post-service care — or similar treatment during active duty — can be vital for veterans, physically and emotionally. The challenges they face can include physical injuries and disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse and difficulty readjusting to civilian life.

The Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center not only addresses those conditions in its Military Rehabilitation Program, it does so with the special understanding of veterans’ needs offered by the program’s onsite military liaison, U.S. Army CPT Luke Slatton. Among his responsibilities are outreach to military installations, training Sitrin staff on military culture, and helping to make sure the physical, mental and social needs of veterans are met during their treatment.

The military liaison position continued in 2011 through the support of a $72,000 grant from The Community Foundation’s Rosamond G. Childs Fund.

We live in a world where science can achieve almost anything. But even modern science can’t manufacture money — and that’s exactly what Herkimer County Community College needed to build up-to-date science labs.

For years, HCCC’s labs lacked the latest amenities needed to match the competitive edge the college’s staff and curricula already offered. Oversized work stations, an awkward layout and outdated equipment made teaching difficult and lab work potentially hazardous.

Three grants totaling $130,000 from The Community Foundation’s Harry F. Dise, Wesley & Marion Small and Rosamond G. Childs funds helped bring a five-year capital campaign to a successful conclusion, allowing the college to move forward with the needed renovations.

As a result, beginning with the fall 2012 semester, students will be studying in state-of-the-art labs that complement the other strengths of HCCC’s science program.

At Utica College, similar support — in Community Foundation grants of $73,360 in 2011 and $100,000 in 2010 — are funding renovations and equipment in laboratories at the Gordon Science Center.

The Community Foundation’s Legacy Society honors those who have chosen to shape their legacies through planned gifts from their estate to The Foundation. Corporate contributions also fund capacity-building trainings for area not-for-profits, a Speaker Series that highlights community innovators and an annual event to promote the community’s philanthropic efforts.
