2011 ANNUAL REPORT
ABOUT COLUMBUS 2020: A REGIONAL STRATEGY FOR GROWTH TO MEET OUR ECONOMIC TIMES
Columbus 2020 is a bold public-private partnership that leverages the strengths of The Columbus Region’s talented
workforce, small and large businesses, research and academic institutions, and international connections to ignite
economic growth and build a healthier, more sustainable future for Central Ohio.
The initiative grows our economy by ensuring that our existing companies are growing and thriving, that the world´s
leading companies are attracted to the region, that innovations are cultivated and commercialized, and that our civic
infrastructure is continually improving to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving world economy.
This unique public-private partnership leverages dollars raised from the private sector and places the Columbus Region
in a competitive position from which it can staff a professional economic development team to market the region and
provide solutions to local businesses.
Goals:
— Add 150,000 net new jobs by 2020
— Increase personal per capita income by 30%
— Add eight billion dollars of capital investment
— Be recognized as a national leader in economic development
The Plan:
Columbus 2020 is focused on four core pillars of economic development:
1. Retain and expand the companies and industries that call Central Ohio home today
2. Attract major employers to establish operations in Central Ohio
3. Create more commercial enterprises by leveraging the region’s research assets and entrepreneurs
4. Improve the civic infrastructure and political conditions that enhance the economic development environment

2011 IN REVIEW
Columbus 2020’s leadership insisted on having a bias for action in its first year of operation. The first priority was to build a team
of professionals to lead the effort and to collaborate with the various state and local economic development groups.
Secondly, it was important that a board of directors be put in place to lead the public-private partnership.
Finally, it was critical that the strategy include a sustainable funding model and engage an inclusive group of local governments and
private-sector companies to fund the strategy.
Operationally, the team’s focus was to reach out to local businesses. Along with its local economic development allies in the region’s
11 counties, more than 500 companies were interviewed face to face about their challenges and opportunities for growth. The goal of this
outreach was to better understand the region’s economic base, connect companies with their peers and make them aware of state and
local programming available to support them.
The Columbus 2020 team set a new standard for marketing the region nationally and internationally, with more than 40 business missions
to talk with developing businesses and location advisers in 25 states and six countries. The team uncovered more than 150 qualified
projects, hosted nearly one new company per week to investigate the region firsthand and participated in dozens of projects that have
announced expansions and new jobs in central Ohio.
To help foster entrepreneurship in the region, Columbus 2020 collaborated with TechColumbus to create the First Customer initiative,
which connects technology and biomedical startups with larger companies and institutions in the region. Although the program is in its
early stages, more than 30 Columbus-based entrepreneurs have been engaged thus far. One success story is AKOTA Technologies, whose
software tool has landed a trial engagement with a major healthcare organization as a result of the First Customer initiative.
Although Columbus 2020 had a productive year in 2011, its leaders want to continue the momentum throughout 2012 and beyond.
Broadly, we want the Columbus Region to be recognized as a leader in economic development. With one year down, we think we’re
headed in the right direction.

a 78,000-square-foot facility, bringing 30 new jobs to the city with an average wage of $17.50 per hour. Headquartered

2011 ANNUAL REPORT
The Columbus Region Logistics Council (CRLC) serves as the catalyst for the growth of the Region’s logistics capability.
The CRLC leads the implementation of a strategic roadmap that focuses on the following:
1. Fostering a logistics-friendly business environment
2. Continuing to develop advanced logistics infrastructure
3. Infusing world-class logistics technology into the Region
4. Building a high-skill workforce
Columbus 2020 continues to work with the CRLC and great partners like the Columbus Regional Airport Authority
to retain and attract world-class logistics providers.
In 2011, Columbus 2020 commissioned a detailed analysis of the region’s logistics competitiveness, which highlighted
the great strengths and evolving challenges in continuing to glow the cluster. Curtis Spencer, President of IMS
Worldwide, who conducted the study said, “our findings indicate that the Columbus Region is indeed still in the top
tier of sites selected for efficient and predictable distribution of goods.”
