2011 SEASON PREVIEW

The Air Force cross country team, under the direction of third-year head coach Juli Benson, is a blend of talented veterans and noteworthy newcomers. Depth con-tinues to be a strong point for the men’s program, as the roster boasts an exciting mix of experienced upperclassmen and talented newcomers. The women’s team added a wealth of talent to their lineup, providing Benson with one of the largest squads in recent years.

Both the men’s and women’s rosters will have to replace all-conference, MVP runners. The men’s squad will have to overcome the graduation of two-time all-conference honoree Justin Tyner, who competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships during each of the last two years. On the women’s side, Air Force will look to deal with the loss of 2011 Academy graduate Katherine Ward, who claimed the program’s first all-conference honor since 2005 and paced the Falcons in every major race last season.

For the second straight year, the men’s senior class is the smallest, with just three members, but returns a tremendous amount of talent and experience. Team cap-tain Jim Walmsley, who collected a first-place finish at the Woody Greeno Invita-tional last year and also paced the Falcons at the Rust Buster Invitational, will be joined by classmates Nick White and Alex Zubey. White is coming off of a remark-able track season, where he earned second-team All-America honors as a member of the Academy’s record-setting distance medley relay team, while Zubey has been a consistent contributor for Air Force during his first three seasons.

Although the squad may look young on paper, with just three seniors, the 18 junior and sophomore runners provide a wealth of experience to the lineup, while the five freshmen runners provide strong depth.

Jeremy Drenckhahn, an all-region selection and NCAA Cross Country Champion-ship participant in 2010, will lead the junior class, in terms of experience. He will be joined on the roster by Ted Artz, Matt Bell, Cameron Edwards, Sam O’Hair, Gage Owens, Seth Pelletier and Andrew Quallio.

Ten sophomores return to the lineup for their second year on the cross country team. Isaiah Bragg and Lance Wolfsmith competed at the conference champi-onship meet as freshmen, while Bragg also ran at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championship. Also returning to the lineup will be Dan Bailey, Matt Caldwell, Car-son Fugal, Jake Hawkins, Alex Lindsay, Gavin Owens and Charlie Perkins.

The men added five freshmen to its roster in 2011, including Zack Christenson, Riley Coates, Ronnie Elly, Elliot Myers and Zach Perkins.

At first glance, the women’s roster looks like a rather young squad, featuring just three seniors, four juniors, six sophomores and nine freshmen. But the upperclass-men, most notably the junior class, have gained valuable experience early in their careers, with appearances at nationally-recognized meets.

Like the men’s roster, the senior class is the smallest, with just three members. Auriele Fain, who missed her junior season with injury, returns to the lineup as team captain for the second straight year. She will be joined by conference and regional participant Katie Carroll, as well as Alexa Ramsier.

The junior class is bursting with talent and experience, as Jen Bremser, Melissa Fuerst, Kate Kanetzky and Morgan Mosby have been significant contributors to the Falcons’ improvement during each of the last two years. All four ran at the confer-ence and regional meets in 2010, while Bremser and Kanetzky also competed at both meets as freshmen.

The sophomore class, which includes Amanda Blain, Annette Eichenberger, Carley Gross, Tasha Mayne and Stephaney Saari, gained valuable experience last year. Gross, Mayne and Saari all competed at the conference championship meet, while Saari also ran at the regional meet. In addition, fellow sophomore Adrianna Dong joined the program in the offseason.

The Falcons added nine newcomers to the roster this year in Heather Connick, Taylor Drolshagen, Rebecca Esselstein, Michelle Ferguson, Christine Hagan, Emily Hazen, Marie Rossillon, Chelsea Spencer and Rachel Sykes.

Benson, the 2010 Mountain West Coach of the Year, will be assisted this season by volunteer coaches Sam Horn, Jenny Simpson and Mark Stanforth. Horn is entering his first year as a volunteer assistant for the Falcons, while Simpson and Stanforth are each in their second.

The Falcons begin the 2011 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the UCCS Rust Buster Invitational at Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs. One week later (Saturday, Sept. 17), Air Force travels to Lincoln, Neb., for the annual Woody Greeno Invitational at Nebraska’s Pioneer Park. The Falcons close out the month on Friday, Sept. 30, when select runners participate at the Notre Dame Invitational at the ND Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.

Air Force opens the second month of competition on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Boulder, Colo., at the 26th-annual Rocky Mountain Shootout, which will be held at the Buf-falo Ranch Course. The following week (Saturday, Oct. 8), the Falcons travel to Hays, Kan., for the Tiger Invitational at the Fort Hays State University Cross Country Course, before concluding the regular season on Friday, Oct. 14, at Wisconsin’s adidas Invitational on the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis.

The championship season begins on Saturday, Oct. 29, with the Mountain West Cross Country Championships in Fort Collins, Colo. Two weeks later (Nov. 12), the Falcons travel to Provo, Utah, for the NCAA Mountain Region Championships at BYU Cross Country Course. The 2011 season comes to an end at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday, Nov. 21, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.


HEAD COACH JULI BENSON

Juli Benson, the 2010 Mountain West Coach of the Year, is entering her third sea-son as the head coach for the Air Force cross country team. In addition to her duties coaching the cross country program, Benson is an assistant coach for the Falcons’ track and field team, working exclusively with the middle distance and distance runners.

Last season, Benson was honored as the coach of the year by the Mountain West Conference after guiding the men’s team to a third-place finish at the conference championships and two all-conference selections, including runner-up placement by senior Justin Tyner. The men finished fifth at the NCAA Regional Champion-ships, while Tyner and sophomore Jeremy Drenckhahn advanced to the national championship meet. On the women’s side, Katherine Ward claimed the first all-region and all-conference honors for the women’s program since 2005.

In 2009, Benson coached Tyner to the Falcons’ first appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships since 2007. Highlighted by a pair of all-conference runners in Tyner and then-senior Zach Nordahl, the men placed third at the conference championships. With four of the five scoring runners finished within the top 30, the women’s squad finished fourth for its best placement at the conference meet since the 2004 season.

The distance success has carried into the track season. Since her arrival to the track and field staff in 2009, Air Force’s distance runners have accounted for six confer-ence titles, including three straight titles in the indoor 3000-meter race, and four All-America awards, highlighted by Tyner’s third-place finish in the 5000-meter run at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships. In just three years under Benson’s guid-ance, six Academy track records have been set and 40 incursions to the program’s all-time top-10 lists have been made.

Benson came to the Academy following a three-year stint at George Mason Uni-versity, where she served as the men’s middle distance coach and recruiting coordinator. While with the Patriots, Benson was instrumental in improving the placement of the men’s cross country team at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships from ninth to second in just two seasons.

Prior to her time at GMU, she spent five years as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field team at Georgetown University. During her tenure with the Hoyas, over 20 athletes earned All-America status. In addition, the dis-tance program was consistently ranked among the nation’s top-10.

One of her Georgetown runners, Chris Lukezic, won the USA Junior National Cham-pionship in the 1500-meter run and finished fourth in that event at the 2004 Olym-pic Trials. She also guided Treniere Clement to a runner-up performance in the 1500-meter run at the 2004 NCAA Championships.

Benson began her coaching career as the head coach of the women’s cross country team at her alma mater, James Madison University, in 1993. During her four-year tenure, she helped lead the Dukes to their first-ever CAA Championship. In addi-tion, she served as an assistant coach for the track and field team.

She received a bachelor’s degree in political science from James Madison in 1992. She also obtained a master’s degree in sports administration and exercise science from JMU in 1996. A four-year letterwinner with the Dukes, she was an NCAA All-American in the 1500-meter run during the 1992 season. In 2002, Benson was inducted into the JMU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Benson, who spent seven years as a competitor for Asics Tiger Corporation (1993-94) and Reebok International (1994-00), served as an assistant women’s coach for the 2007 U.S. World Championship Team that competed in Osaka, Japan, and as the junior women’s coach for the 2003 U.S. Cross Country Team that captured its highest finish ever at the World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Benson is currently the personal coach to Jennifer Barringer Simpson, who re-cently claimed the gold medal in the 1500-meter run at the 2011 World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Benson also continues to coach Tyner, Houseworth and Matt Williams, who are members of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program (WCAP).

She has also served as a coach to Kevin Sullivan, who set new Canadian records in the indoor and outdoor 3000-meter events and finished 13th at the 2006 World Cross Country Championships, and Lukezic, who finished seventh at the 2006 World Indoor Championships and clocked the seventh-fastest 1500-meter time ever in a U.S. outdoor performance. In addition, Benson served as a consultant to Alan Webb, who was ranked No. 1 in the 1500 meters during that time.

An accomplished runner in her own right, Benson represented the United States in the 1500-meter run during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. She is a two-time silver medalist in the 1500 at the World Student Games and a gold medalist in that event at the 1996 Atlanta Gran Prix. She also earned a bronze medal in the mile of the 1997 Gran Prix Final. Benson was elected to the U.S. Women’s Track and Field Coaches Association Advisory Board and as a representative for USATF Women’s High Performance (middle distance running).

She was married in July 2009 to Robert Benson, the associate head football coach and defensive coordinator at The Colorado School of Mines. The couple resides in Highlands Ranch, Colo.

Juli Benson Named MWC Men’s Head Coach of the Year

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Air Force cross country head coach Juli Benson was selected as the Men’s Coach of the Year on Friday, Oct. 29, at the conclusion of the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships in Laramie, Wyo. In her second year at the helm of the Falcons’ cross country program, Benson earned the honor by a vote of her peers.

Under Benson’s leadership, the Falcons finished third at the Mountain West Conference Championships, while placing two runners on the first-team all-con-ference list. It was just the fourth time in program history – and the first since 2007 – that two Air Force runners have claimed first-team all-MWC honors.

Benson becomes the second Air Force coach to earn a conference’s top coach-ing honor, joining former cross country head coaches Mark Stanforth, who earned the award in the Mountain West Conference (1999, 2003) and Western Athletic Conference (1994, 1996), and Ralph Lindeman, who earned the 1991 WAC Coach of the Year award.

Benson shared the 2010 award with New Mexico’s Joe Franklin, who was named the women’s coach of the year.

Mark Stanforth returns to the Air Force track and field program for his second season as a volunteer coach. Stanforth, who retired in 2006 after serving 15 years as the head coach of the cross country and associate head coach of the track and field team, will assist the current Falcons’ middle distance and distance runners.

The highlights for the men’s cross country program during Stanforth’s 15 years include three top-16 NCAA finishes between 2000 and 2004, topped by an eighth-place finish in 2003. When the Falcons qualified for the NCAA Division I champion-ship in 2000, it marked a unique coaching distinction for Stanforth - his teams had qualified for the national cross country championship in every collegiate division: NJCAA, NAIA, NCAA Divisions I, II and III.

The Falcons won three conference championships, were conference runners-up six times and finished outside the top three only once in that 15 year span. Stanforth was selected by his peers as the conference coach of the year four times.

Stanforth led the women’s cross country team during their transition from NCAA Division II to Division I. In his first four years, the Falcon women competed in Divi-sion II and qualified for the NCAA championships each year with program-high finishes of sixth place in both 1992 and 1995.

In 1996, the Academy women’s programs moved to Division I. In 1999, the Falcons started a string of five consecutive third-place MWC conference finishes, the only upper division finishes by any Falcon women’s program in Division I.

Individually, athletes with whom Stanforth worked with earned All-America honors 10 times in track and field and six times in cross country. He coached 26 indi-vidual conference champions on the track and one in cross country. His teams also earned national all-academic honors nine times.

Prior to coaching at the Academy, Stanforth coached one year at his alma mater, the University of South Dakota/Springfield, seven years at Glendale (Ariz.) Com-munity College and five years at the University of California, San Diego, in addition to one year as a graduate assistant at Northern State (S.D.) University.

Stanforth and his wife, Pat, have two sons, Nicholas and Daniel.

2011 MOST VALUABLE RUNNERS

MEN’S MVP: Justin Tyner repeated as MVP of the men’s cross country team, after another impressive season. Tyner capped off his stellar cross country career with all-conference and all-region honors, while becoming the first Falcon since 2004 to make a repeat appearance at the NCAA Championships. Tyner was the runner-up at the Mountain West Conference Championships – matching the program’s best-ever placement at the conference meet. He finished 10th out of 110 runners at the regional championship, en route to all-region honors and a spot at the NCAA Championships. Tyner also paced the Falcons at Wisconsin’s adidas Classic (16th out of 202 runners) and at the Pre-Nationals Meet (43rd out of 241 runners).

WOMEN’S MVP: Katherine Ward capped off a stellar season, becoming the program’s first all-conference and all-region honoree since 2005. Ward finished 13th at the conference championship meet, guiding the Falcons to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. She also placed 25th at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships to claim all-region honors, marking the first time since 2005 that a member of the women’s team had earned a top-25 finish. Ward paced the Falcons in every meet she competed in, including a second-place finish at the Rust Buster Invitational and an 11th-place finish in the 211-runner adidas Invitational.

ALL-REGION RUNNERSAir Force had three of its runners named to the all-re-gion team at the Mountain Region Championships on Nov. 13. Based on top-25 finishes, Justin Tyner (10th) and Jeremy Drenckhahn (13th) were named to the men’s team, while Katherine Ward (25th) was named to the women’s team.

DID YOU KNOW?Katherine Ward was the first all-region honoree from the women’s team since Nicole Graham earned a top-25 finsih at the reiognal meet in 2005.

REGIONAL RECAPFour of the five scoring runners for Air Force placed within the top 35, as Air Force finished fifth of 16 teams. Behind Justin Tyner and Jeremy Drenckhahn’s respective 10th and 13th-place finishes, Jon Rock fin-ished 30th and Jim Walmsley placed 33rd.

THE RE-WARDCrossing the finish line in a 25th-place time of 21:20.3 (a personal improvement by 38 seconds), Katherine Ward recorded the best regional finish by a member of the Air Force women’s team since 2005.

BENSON NAMED MWC COACH OF THE YEARHead coach Juli Benson was selected by her peers as the Mountain West Men’s Head Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the conference championships. Benson became the second Air Force coach to earn the league’s top coaching honor, joining former coach Mark Stanforth (1999, 2003).

TYNER TAKES SECOND AT MWC CHAMPIONSHIPSBehind a time of 25:09.5, Justin Tyner finished sec-ond at the MWC Championships on Oct. 29, matching the program’s best placement ever at a MWC meet.

A LITTLE HISTORY LESSONJustin Tyner’s runner-up finish marked the third time in program history that an Air Force runner has placed second at the MWC Championships. Tyner joins Nick Wilson (2005) and Ben Payne (2003) as conference runner-ups. Tyner, who placed third at last year’s meet, also became just the second Air Force runner to claim two first-team honors in a career.

DUO EARNS FIRST-TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE HONORSIn addition to Justin Tyner’s second-place finish, Air Force earned all-MWC first-team honors from Jon Rock, who placed sixth in 25:15.8. The pair marked the first time since 2007 that two Falcons have claimed first-team honors at the same championship.

WARD SHINES AT CONFERENCE MEETKatherine Ward became the first female runner since Nicole Graham in 2005 to earn all-conference honors, as she garnered second-team accolades with a 13th-place finish at the MWC Championships (22:27.6). Ward’s placement was the best for the women since 2005 and the third-highest ever at the MWC meet.

MEN TAKE THIRD AT CONFERENCE MEETBacked by all-MWC runners Justin Tyner (second) and Jon Rock (sixth), the men placed third at the confer-ence meet. Jeremy Drenckhahn finished 15th, while Jim Walmsley placed 18th. Isaiah Bragg rounded out the scoring runners with a 30th-place finish.

WOMEN MATCH BEST FINISH IN SINCE 2004The women placed fourth at the MWC Championships – matching the squad’s best finish since 2004. Behind Katherine Ward’s 13th-place finish, Melissa Fuerst (24th), Carley Gross (29th) and Morgan Mosby (30th) all finished within the top 30. Kate Kanetzky rounded out the scoring runners with a 43rd-place finish.

LOOKING BACK AT PRE-NATSFour Falcons placed within the top half of the 274-runner field at the Pre-Na-tionals Meet on Oct. 16. Justin Tyner paced the men’s squad with a 43rd-place finish, while Jeremy Drenckhahn (69th), Jim Walmsley (75th) and Jon Rock (115th) also crossed the finish line among the top half of the competitors.

WARD EARNS ANOTHER TOP FINISHFor the fourth consecutive meet, Katherine Ward was the Falcons’ top finisher. Posting a career-best 21:58.0, Ward placed 116th at the Pre-Nationals Meet. Jen Bremser and Morgan Mosby finished 188th and 199th, respectively, while Melissa Fuerst (202nd) and Carley Gross (239th) rounded out scoring runners.

PELLETIER PACES MEN AT TIGER INVITATIONALFinishing 24th out of 156 runners, Seth Pelletier paced the Falcons to a fifth-place team finish at the Tiger Invitational on Oct. 16. Pelletier and Andrew Quallio (27th) finished within the top 30, while Gavin Owens (36th), Ryan Del Grosso (43rd) and Jake Hawkins (49th) finished within the top 50.

TYNER PACES FALCONS AT ADIDAS MEETJustin Tyner paced the men to a 12th-place finish in the team standings at the Wisconsin/adidas Invitational on Oct. 2, as he clocked a time of 23:58 to finish 16th in a race that featured 212 total runners. Four of the five scorers finished within the top half of the field, including Jim Walmsley (57th), Jon Rock (66th) and Jeremy Drenckhahn (76th).

WARD CONTINUES TO PACE THE WOMEN’S TEAMFor the third straight week, Katherine Ward paced the women’s team. Clocking a season-best 6000-meter time of 21:58, Ward finished 93rd in the 202-runner race to lead the Falcons to an 18th-place team finish.

MEN TAKE THIRD AT ROCKY MOUNTAIN SHOOTOUTWith all five scoring runners placing within the top 20 of the Division I field, the men placed third at the Rocky Mountain Shootout on Oct. 2. Lance Wolfsmith, finishing 14th in the university field and 67th overall, paced the men’s team with a time of 27:13. Three of the Falcons’ top four finishers were freshmen, including Wolfsmith, Gavin Owens (16th) and Matt Caldwell (18th).

WALMSLEY NAMED ACADEMY’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEKFollowing a first-place finish at the Woody Greeno Invitational, Jim Walmsley was named the Air Force Academy’s Athlete of the Week, becoming the first male athlete in any sport to claim the award for the 2010-11 season.

WHAT A WEEKEND!Jim Walmsley had a stellar competition at the Woody Greeno Invitational on Sept. 18. In the first 8K race of the season, Walmsley clocked a team-leading time of 24:43.6 to win the meet, posted the 17th-fastest time ever at Pioneer Park and paced the Falcons to a third-place finish in the team standings.

MEN PLACE THIRD AT WOODY GREENO MEETAll five scoring runners placed within the top 30, as the Falcons placed third at the Woody Greeno Invitational on Sept. 18. Jim Walmsley won the meet, while Jeremy Drenckhahn placed 15th. Justin Tyner and Isaiah Bragg finished 24th and 25th, respectively, while Andrew Quallio rounded out the top-five finishers with a 28th-place finish.

WARD PACES WOMEN TO THIRD-PLACE FINISH AT NEBRASKAWith an 11th-place overall finish (third among University runners), Katherine Ward paced the women’s team to a third-place finish in the team standings at the Woody Greeno Invitational on Sept. 18. Katie Carroll placed 14th, while Jen Bremser finished 17th. Morgan Mosby and Melissa Fuerst rounded out the scoring runners with respective 20th- and 22nd-place finishes.SHAKING OFF THE RUSTThe women’s team had a strong start to the season, taking three of the top four spots at the UCCS Rust Buster invitational on Sept. 11. Katherine Ward paced the Falcons with a second-place 4K time of 15:26.99, while Katie Carroll and Morgan Mosby finished third and fourth, respectively.

WALMSLEY PACES MEN AT UCCSThe Falcons, who earned three top-10 finishes at the Rust Buster Invitational, were paced by Jim Walmsley, who finished third in a time of 19:22.35. Jeremy Drenckhahn (eighth) and Matt Bell (10th) rounded out the men’s top-10 for Air Force. The Falcons claimed nearly half of the top 15, as Alex Zubey, Jon Rock and Tyler Small finished 11th, 12th and 15th, respectively.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN…Seniors Tyler Small and Justin Tyner will co-captain the men’s team, while junior Auriele Fain and senior Katherine Ward will lead the women’s squad. It is just the ninth time in the 33-year history of the women’s program that two Falcons have shared the title of captain, while the men’s team has had multiple captains on 19 occasions since 1956.

YOUTH-ORIENTEDThe 29-man roster for the men’s team features 10 freshmen and 10 sopho-mores. The remaining nine runners are comprised of six juniors and three se-niors. On the women’s side, the 15-runner roster features six freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors and two seniors.

Every Olympic cycle, the Air Force sponsors 20-30 athletes to train for a berth in the next Olympic Games. Athletes for this program must be of Olympic caliber; that is, the National Governing Body (NGB) must recognize the athletes chosen for the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) as having a legitimate chance at attaining an Olympic berth. Athletes who meet the criteria are then placed in a special duty assignment preceding the Olympic Games.

The initiation of this program was in 1995, modeled after the Army’s existing program. It was developed after seeing a decline in the amount of Armed Forces members achieving international athletic prowess; specifically, the number of Olympic medals awarded to these members.

What does this mean for distance athletes? Simply put, high caliber athletes graduating from the Academy have a unique opportunity to continue training in their sport. Not only do they get the time to train the way an elite athlete needs to train, but they also get all of the support. A section of Air Force Services called “AF Sports” selects these athletes and takes care of all the equipment, training supplies and travel for the athletes. The athletes are also able to choose where they would like to train to get the best benefit.

Since the inception of the program, seven Air Force distance runners have been a part of the WCAP.

AIR FORCE WINS 2003 MWC CHAMPIONSHIP The men ended the BYU stranglehold over the Mountain West Conference Championships in 2003, winning the first MWC title in Academy history. Air Force (37 pts) edged out the Cougars by four points, marking the first time since the conference was founded that BYU hadn’t won the team title.

The Falcons, who saw all five scoring runners finish within the top 12, were paced by Ben Payne, who finished sec-ond in 24:31. Brian Dumm (5th, 24:52) and Mark Walter (7th, 25:02) joined Payne on the all-conference first team, while Abe Wengel (11th, 25:16), Chris Acs (12th, 25:21) and Nick Wilson (14th, 25:38) were named to the second team.

The men’s team was honored during an Air Force football game in 2003.

THE ACADEMY EXPERIENCE

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY

In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military edu-cators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet the needs of the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other service academies and recommended an Air Force Academy be established without delay.

In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in select-ing a site and on April 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commission narrowed the choice to three locations.

During the summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs, Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property.

In July 1955, the first Academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while con-struction began. It was sufficiently completed for oc-cupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction cost was $142 million.

Women entered the Academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the class of 1980.

COURSES OF STUDY

Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that provides the knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential to a career Air Force officer. The entire USA-FA experience is integrated and mapped to achieve a set of desired outcomes in every graduate.

The core academic curriculum includes courses in ba-sic sciences, engineering, social sciences and humani-ties. Cadets take elective courses to complete re-quirements for one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of the cadets complete majors in science and engineering; the remainder graduate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, aeronautical engineer-ing, foreign area studies, history, behavioral science, civil engineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics.

The U.S. Air Force Academy offers a four-year pro-gram of instruction and experience designed to edu-cate, train and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

FACULTY COMPOSITION

The majority of the Academy’s faculty members, more than 500 total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-officer volunteers who have established outstanding records of performance and dedication. Each has at least a master’s degree and more than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal degrees in their field of study.

About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depth of disciplinary and educational ex-pertise and provide academic stability and continuity.

Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an integral part of their officer develop-ment. The Air Force Academy has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the most accessible and involved faculty for four years in a row. To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has several visiting professors and en-dowed professors who serve one or more years. Of-ficers from other services, as well as officers from allied countries are also members of the faculty. Dis-tinguished civilian and military lecturers also share their expertise with the cadets.

ATHLETIC PROGRAM

MILITARY EDUCATION & TRAINING

An air, space and cyberspace-oriented military edu-cation, training and leadership program begins with basic cadet training and continues throughout the four years. Seniors are responsible for the organiza-tional leadership of the cadet wing, while juniors and sophomores seek to develop team and interpersonal leadership and instructional skills.

Cadets are projected into as many active leadership roles as possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers.

Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- are emphasized the first summer during basic cadet training. Freshmen study the military role in United States society, as well as the mission and organization of the Air Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communication skills and juniors study combat and operational aspects of the Air Force.

The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and parachuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets may fly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team.

Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is required to complete two training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first summer.

Combat survival training is a required three-week program during cadets’ second summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have op-tions such as working with Airmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachute training.

During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership training as supervisors or instructors in the summer programs listed above.

Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few of the programs available to Academy cadets.

The Academy’s athletic program is designed to im-prove physical fitness, teach athletic skills and de-velop leadership qualities. To achieve its goals, the Academy offers some of the most extensive physi-cal education, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three different physical education courses each year.

Lt. Gen. Michael C. Gould is Superintendent, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. He directs a four-year academic, mili-tary training, athlec and character development program leading to a bachelor’s degree and commission as an Air Force officer.

The general is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Class of 1976. His career encompasses a wide range of assignments, rang-ing from head football coach of the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, to serving as Air Force aide to the President of the United States.

He has held numerous command posions at the group, wing and numbered air force level, and was commander of Cheyenne Mountain Operaons Center during 9/11. Prior to his return to the Academy, he was Director of Operaons and Plans, U.S. Transporton Command, Sco Air Force Base, Ill. General Gould is a command pilot with more than 3,000 flying hours in the T-38, T-41, KC-10, C-5, C-17, C-21, C-141 and KC-135R.

The general’s military awards and decoraons include the Disnguished Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Defense Superior Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendaon Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.


AIR FORCE ATHLETICS

Dr. Hans J. Mueh is in his eighth year as the di-rector of athletics at the Air Force Academy. A retired Air Force brigadier general, Mueh was vice dean of faculty for two years prior to his retirement from active duty in the summer of 2004. Mueh was heavily involved in Academy athletics before becoming director of athletics. He was the Academy’s faculty athletics repre-sentative from 1996-2004 and was a long-time member of the board of directors for the Air Force Academy Athletics Association.

Since becoming the director of athletics, Mueh has led the Academy to some remark-

able feats. In 2007, the Academy was one of only three schools (Michigan State and Boston College) to reach post-season play in football (2007), men’s basketball and ice hockey (2006-07). It marked the first time a service academy has ever had a team compete in the post-season in all three sports.

In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’s basketball team has played in an NCAA tournament and the National Invitational Tournament’s Final Four. The ice hockey team won three straight conference championships and made three straight ap-pearances in the NCAA tournament. Mueh was on the selection committee that hired current head coach Frank Serratore and led the Academy’s move into the Athletic Hockey Association. The football program, the Academy’s flagship sport, has gone through a major overhaul under Mueh. He led the transition from the retirement of the legend-ary Fisher DeBerry after 23 years at the helm to hiring current head coach Troy Calhoun, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s impact was immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4 overall mark and a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference in 2007. The Falcons qualified for their first bowl game in five years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007. The program then posted back-to-back eight-win seasons and was 9-4 in 2010, while qualifying for bowl games every year. The school has averaged 9,000 bowl tickets sold during the four-year run.

Mueh has been just as successful behind the scenes with the administration of the department. Mueh restructured the department with an internal/external model that has streamlined resources and made the department more effective from top to bottom. In addition, he has the department on course to become a federally chartered non-profit organization which will lead to more fund-raising opportuni-ties. Mueh was instrumental in the USAFA Endowment and the announcement of the Holaday Athletic Center, an indoor training facility. The $15 million facility was completed in July 2011.

Mueh has also been active within the conference and the NCAA. He is a part of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet and has been active on the NCAA’s aca-demics/eligibility compliance cabinet, the men’s golf committee and the Region 7 postgraduate scholarship committee. Mueh has been equally active within the conference on various leadership committees. He is currently on the awards and recognition committee and has previously served on the joint council executive committee, and committees on championships, television and sportsmanship.

Before assuming his duties as vice dean at the Academy, Mueh was permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry at the Academy, a position he held since October 1987 where he oversaw the annual design and instruction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500 cadets annually. Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Germany, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1951. He entered the Air Force in 1962, as a member of the Academy’s eighth graduat-ing class, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1966.

While at the Academy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner in soccer as a goalie. He still holds the Academy record for saves in a game with 30, accomplishing it twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Benedictine. In his junior and senior years, Mueh helped the Falcons to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship and quarterfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. He was a first-team all-league selection in 1965. Following graduation, Mueh completed two assignments in intelligence before at-tending the University of Wisconsin where he earned his master’s degree in chem-istry in 1970. He later earned a doctorate degree in chemistry from Wisconsin in 1976 as a distinguished graduate. Mueh also completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College. Between earning the two degrees, Mueh returned to USAFA as an instructor in the department of chemistry from 1970-72. He also served as assistant soccer coach and played semi-pro soccer with the Aurora Internationals in Denver during those two years, leading the Internationals to the Colorado state title in 1971.

He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and served as an intelligence officer in Saigon, Republic of Vietnam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand, in 1972 and 1973. After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh returned to the Academy in 1976 as an associate professor of chemistry. He remained at the Academy except for a stint in 1985-86 as the special assistant for technical matters at the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon. In 1986, he assumed the position of acting head, department of chemistry, before being selected for his position of permanent professor and head of the depart-ment of chemistry in 1987. As faculty athletics representative, he was active in both the Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West Conference, and was the Academy’s representative on the transition team to form the new MWC, the only faculty athletics representative on the team.

He competes in golf, racquetball, handball and tennis, and has promoted Air Force Academy intercollegiate sports throughout his tenure, beginning with work as chairman of the hockey eligibility committee, officer representative to the men’s golf team and five years as the officer representative to the football team. Mueh is married to the former Sally Flax of Cincinnati, Ohio. They have three children: Kristine, Kurt and Deborah.

AIR FORCE ATHLETICS

Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as the Air Force Academy’s.

The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach leadership in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three subdivisions of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and physical education.

The intercollegiate program has 17 men’s and 10 women’s NCAA-sanctioned teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men’s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The Academy fields women’s teams in basketball, cross-country, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two non-NCAA programs; boxing and cheerleading.

The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in this conference against teams from Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV and Wyoming. All sports also compete against non-conference opponents, including many nationally-ranked teams.

The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 17 times, which is more than any other academy. The winner of the annual rivalry visits the White House to have the trophy presented by the President of the United States.

The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in the country. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6 million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a combined seating capacity of more than 9,000.

Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,470, while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions.

The department’s newest facility, the Holaday Athletic Center, was completed in July 2011.
