Harry R. “Big Jeff” Jeffer-son, best known for his coaching career at Bluefield
State College, has been named the American Football Coaches Association’s recipient of the 2010 Trailblazer Award. The award will be presented posthumously at the AFCA President’s Kickoff Lun-cheon on Monday, January 10 at the2011AFCAConventioninDal-las. Jefferson passed away in 1966.
The AFCA Trailblazer Award was created to honor early leaders in the football coaching profes-sion who coached at historically black colleges and universities. The award is given each year to a person that coached in a particular decade ranging from 1920-1970. This year’s winner coached from 1930 to 1939.
“Coach Jeff” defied the odds to direct Bluefield State College to back-to-back national black colle-giate football championships in the
1920s and became commissioner of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association(CIAA).
After completing his educa-tion at both West Virginia State UniversityandOhioUniversity,Jefferson began his coaching career atWilberforce(Ohio)University. In 1925, he was hired at Bluefield State College and helped to build a winning football program at a relatively small school. Bluefield usually didn’t have more than 100 male students at a time, so Jef-ferson’s teams were often less than 30 men.
Jefferson left Bluefield in 1930 to coach at North Carolina A&T College, but returned to Bluefield two years later to coach the “Big Blues” to a season record of 8-0-1. In 1934, Jefferson made the move toVirginiaStateUniversity.Underhis leadership, Virginia State were CIAA champions in 1936, 1938, 1939 and 1945, and won a Black
College na-tional champi-onship in 1936 with a 7-0-2 overall record. His next stop was Hampton Universityin1949 where he coached until 1957, finishing with an overall mark of 32-41-3. In addition to coaching, Jefferson exercised his leadership as Athletic DirectoratBluefieldState,NorthCarolina A&T and Hampton.
In addition to receiving the 2010 Trailblazer Award, Jef-ferson was awarded a citation to the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1961. He served as commissioner of the CIAA from 1961 to 1965, was inducted into the Virginia State Hall of Fame in 1980, and was the first chairman and charter member of the National Athletic Steering Committee.
Former Penn State Defensive Coordinator Jerry Sandusky To Receive AFCA’s 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award
Jerry Sandusky, former de-fensive coordinator at Penn State, is this year’s recipient
oftheAFCAOutstandingAchieve-ment Award. The AFCA Board of TrusteescreatedtheOutstandingAchievement Award to recognize AFCA members, past and present, who have achieved outstanding success while coaching football.
Sandusky played for Joe Paterno at Penn State from 1963 to 1965. He was a graduate assistant for the team in 1966, took assistant coach positions at Juniata College in 1967 andBostonUniversityin1968,andthen returned to his alma mater in 1969 as defensive line coach. Coaching under Paterno, Sandusky also served as linebacker coach be-fore being promoted to defensive co-ordinator in 1977. With Sandusky’s leadership, Penn State gained national recognition as “Linebacker
U”foritsoutstandinglinebackerplay. In fact, Sandusky coached 11 First-Team All-America linebackers, in addition to numerous NFL Hall of Fame inductees. In his 32 years at Penn State, Sandusky coached in 29 bowl games and was part of two national championships in 1982 and 1986. His most memorable game was perhaps his last, as he coached the Nittany Lions to a 24-0 shut-out against Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl. He retired at the conclusion
of the 1999 season to devote more time to his nonprofit organization, The Second Mile.
While Sandusky’s football achievements are great, his contri-bution to the community is to be celebrated as well. His heart for children fueled the 1977 founda-tion of The Second Mile, an organi-zation that “provides a network of nine prevention, early intervention and community-based programs and services for children.”
Some of their programs include a foster placement agency, counseling services, several summer camps and fundraising for families in need.
The Second Mile reaches out to more than 100,000 children in Pennsylvania each year and their mission is clear: they don’t want adversity to be a hindrance to a child’s development and opportu-nity for success.

is given to the “individual, group or institution whose services have been outstanding in the advancement of the best interests of football.”
The award is named in honor of a man who was instrumental in founding the AFCA in the 1920s. He is considered one of the great innova-tors and motivating forces in the early development of the game of football. Shenendehowa(N.Y.)HighSchool head coach Brent Steuerwald has been named
the 2010 Power of Influence Award recipient. Steuerwald was nomi-nated by the New York State High School Football Coaches Associa-tion. Presented jointly by the Ameri-can Football Coaches Association® and the American Football Coaches Foundation®, the award will be given to Steuerwald at the AFCA CoachoftheYearDinneronTues-day, January 11, at the 2011 AFCA ConventioninDallas,Texas.
The Power of Influence Award was created as a way for the AFCA and AFCF to honor a deserving high school football coach. Coaches who receive this award are recognized for their impact on their team and play-ers, as well as the legacy they leave with the school and community. This award is not based on wins and losses; however, it is noted that coaches of powerful influence have longevity and success. It is the first AFCA award specifically designed to honor a high school coach.
“This is by far the most presti-gious award that I’ve received in my career,” Brent Steuerwald said. “I’ve had other kinds of recognition that just don’t equate to this because of its national stature and its com-petitive nature from all of the other deserving coaches. It’s an honor I take great pride in, and I will cherish this for the rest of my life.”
Steuerwald began his coaching career in 1957 as the varsity line coachatOlean(N.Y.)HighSchool.He left after the 1963 season to begin in the same role at Glens Falls (N.Y.)HighSchool,wherehestayeduntil 1967. At that time, he was hired at Shenendehowa High School as the school’s first athletic director. It wasn’t long before Steuerwald began work to create a football pro-gram at Shenendehowa. With com-plete support from the community andtheBoardofEducation, thefirst
football team took the field for the 1968 season. In his 43 years as head coach, Steuerwald has coached the Plainsmen to several titles. Shenen-dehowa won back-to-back-to-back state championships in 1982, 1983 and 1984. In 1992, they were New York State runner-up, state finalists from 1995-2002, and state semi-finalists in 2003. Steuerwald has guided the Plainsmen to 25 Section 2AA–EmpireLeagueChampion-ships and 10 Section II Champion-ships. Steuerwald’s overall coaching record stands at 307-87-4 after guiding the school to a 7-3 mark and an appearance in the Section II Class AA Super Bowl in 2010.
“Brent Steuerwald is a true leader with vision,” said Thomas W. Heinzelman, president of the New York State High School Football Coaches Association. “The true measure of his success and contri-butions to the game of football lie in the thousands of interpersonal relationships that he has developed throughout his illustrious career.” Steuerwald is described by his col-leagues and former players as a man of great integrity, and a coach who promotes character and sportsman-ship. To him, football is more than just winning. “Coach instilled in me a focus, discipline and commit-ment that has led to my successes throughout my entire life,” said formerplayer,MichaelE.Peacock.
In addition to the 2010 Power of Influence Award, Steuerwald has received several other recognitions for his coaching talent. He has been honored 19 times as Area Coach of the Year, and was named National Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches’ As-sociation in 1995. In 1981, he was named New York State Champion Coach of the Year. He won Region OneWinnerNationalCoachoftheYear five times over, first in 1982, and then in 1985, 1988, 1992 and 1995.
