COMEDY

The Flying Karamazov BroThersSaturday, September 17 at 8 p.m.They aren’t Russian. They aren’t brothers. And they certainly don’t fly. Misnomers aside, this zany foursome presents an unforgettable spectacle of music, comedy, dance, theater, and, not least of all, juggling. And boy, do they juggle—everything from bowling balls to chain saws—and with a bit of philosophy thrown in for good measure…and good laughs. “This quartet of juggler-clowns has the stuff to amuse and amaze. The puns fly as fast as the pins.” (New York’s Downtown Express) They started on the streets of San Francisco in the ’70s, and have since appeared on Broadway, Seinfeld and late-night TV. Don’t miss the most enduring and uniquely entertaining comedians performing today! “100 minutes of cleverness and comedy that go by in a flash!” (The New York Times)

LATIN MUSIC AND DANCE

Kings oF salsaSunday, October 2 at 4 p.m.This electrifying mix of high voltage Latin music and sizzling choreography comes straight from the streets of Havana! Kings of Salsa is a hot new show, filled with the sounds and movement of this intoxicating island, and showcases a slice of contemporary Cuba never before seen on stage. The renowned young Cuban choreographer Roclan Gonzalez Chavez has gathered some of his island’s greatest talents to perform a spicy blend of cool street salsa, Afro-Caribbean hip-hop, contemporary dance, and Cuba’s classics: the mambo, rumba, and cha-cha-cha. It is made all the more electric by the Latin rhythms and stratospheric brass arrangements of the spectacular nine-piece band, Cuba Ashire. “The dancers of the Kings of Salsa exercise their mastery of [these dances] to perfection, as if dancing were as essential to life as breathing and the beating of the heart.” (Hamburger Abendsplatt, Germany)

“Evocative and exciting.” (Las Vegas Review-Journal) Spain’s premiere flamenco dancer and choreographer, José Porcel, and his company of gifted dancers and musicians dazzle audiences with an explosion of passionate rhythms, powerful movement, vibrant colors, and breathtaking choreography. In his new show, Gypsy Fire, Porcel presents the purest, oldest, and most fiery forms of flamenco. Porcel has been dancing Andalusian folkloric dances and flamenco since the age of 13, and has spent his life studying in Madrid with the masters of the craft. Now he brings his extraordinary company to the Hylton Center to share the customs, the culture, the art and, most of all, the passion of the gypsy people. “Exceptionally well-trained dancers…crisp technique and rhythmically solid.” (The Washington Post)

l.a. TheaTre WorKs The rivalryFriday, November 11 at 8 p.m. America’s premier radio theater company presents Norman Corwin’s riveting depiction of the historic debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in their battle for the Senate. Using dialogue from the original debate, The Rivalry explores this epic clash of ideas that riveted a divided nation, as these two legendary politicians tackled the most controversial issues of their day—racial, social, and economic inequity; states’ rights; and the role of the federal government in the lives of its citizens: issues as relevant today as they were 150 years ago. The work is a stunning testament to the willingness of Lincoln and Douglas to put aside their differences for the good of the country. L.A. Theatre Works is “a national theatrical treasure,” says the Philadelphia Inquirer. This incredible company stages radio dramas with first-rate casts and live sound effects, resulting in a connection to the audience rarely felt in a traditional theater setting.

In 1950, the government established the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China to preserve and carry on this ancient art form, and it has since thrived both at home and now abroad.
