Greg Wyzykowski is back for his fifth season as head coach of the Seton Hall women’s tennis program. Wyzykowski joined the Pirates after spending the 2006-07 season as an assistant coach with the Fairleigh Dickinson men’s and women’s tennis teams.

In his four years with the Pirates, 70 percent of players have improved their results from their freshman season to their senior years.

Wyzykowski’s teams have also excelled in the classroom. Collectively, the team has qualified for the ITA Academic Award each season. Several players have also received academic recognition from the BIG EAST.

In his year with the Knights, Wyzykowski helped lead FDU to a NEC Championship along with an NCAA Tournament appearance.

In July of 2008, Wyzykowski was a coach for Under-14 boys and girls at the USTA Eastern Zonal Competition. His boys squad took the gold medal at the event.

His previous collegiate experience includes launching a women’s tennis program at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J., where he spent seven seasons. In 2005-06, he earned him CACC Coach of the Year honors and was conference’s women’s tennis chairperson during its inaugural season.

Wyzykowski resurrected the women’s tennis program at Brookdale Community College where he was head coach for three years. He also coached in the high school ranks at South River for 11 years, where he was selected Coach of the Year twice, and Shore Regional for an additional six seasons. Wyzykowski has also served on the ITA/NCAA Division II women’s ranking committee in 2005-06, and a former head pro at Rumson Country Club.

Wyzykowski is a United States Professional Tennis Association certified instructor and is a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. He also served on the United States Tennis Association middle states collegiate committee. In 2011, Wyzykowski served as part of the BIG EAST Championship tennis committee.

Wyzykowski is a graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology and currently resides in Howell, N.J.

The Seton Hall tennis team enters the 2011-12 season, the fifth with head coach Greg Wyzykowski at the helm, with a sense of purpose. With five returning players and three talented newcomers, the Pirates are poised to open eyes along the way as they navigate their challenging schedule.

“I think the biggest difference this year is our team’s attitude,” said Wyzykowski. “Going back to the beginning of the year, each one of our girls has shown that they are ready to make the commitment necessary to get to where we want to be at the end of the season.”

“Regardless of what level of tennis you are talking about, behind every successful team is a strong leadership force,” Wyzykowski continued. “I think this year we have a group that has really bought into this concept and helped re-energize the program.”

The bulk of the stewardship responsibilities will fall upon senior captain Elizabeth Verow. A four-year team member, Verow has proven to be a capable member of the Pirates lineup. In 2011-12 however, Verow’s most important contributions may very well come outside the confines of the tennis court.

“Lizzie is an exceptional athlete who is capable of great things with a racket in her hand,” stated Wyzykowski. “I have also been extremely pleased with the way she has embraced her role as team captain and played an integral part in the development of a winning attitude within our program.”

Fellow senior Courtney Kilarski has also been a significant presence in the SHU lineup over the past four years. Kilarski is a two-time ITA qualifier who has played a major part in the Pirates’ doubles efforts throughout her career.

“With Courtney, I think the maturation in her game from when she came in as a freshman is clear,” Wyzykowski said. “She is a very talented player and given the renewed commitment she has shown on and off the court, this could be her best season as a Pirate.”

The 2011-12 version of the Pirates only features one junior, but she is one with a bevy of experience. In her two years at The Hall, Karina Cordero has been one of the program’s most consistent players, compiling 20 individual victories and 20 doubles wins in that span. Cordero will be a key part of the Pirates efforts in both singles and doubles again this season.

“Karina has a great skill set,” said Pirates’ head coach. “She has the ability to do very good things for us and she will be an important part of what we do this season. I expect her to have a very productive season because I think she has progressed as a player to the point where she can consistently play at the top of her game.”

The three upperclassmen will be leaned upon heavily to help guide a young roster through the rigors of this year’s schedule. The Pirates non-conference schedule includes six teams that reached at least the semifinals of their respective conference tournaments a year ago, highlighted by defending conference champions Army (Patriot League) and NJIT (Great West).

Seton Hall will also be looking to improve its win total in BIG EAST matches for the second year in a row after narrowly missing out on a conference tournament berth last season.

“Obviously, you want to go out there and compete and put yourself in a position to win each match,” Wyzykowski said. “I think a big part of that for our team is going to be winning more doubles points than we have in the past. Doubles tennis is unique in that often times you will see players who are the best on their team or in the region individually, but they are not strong in doubles play. If we can become more consistent in doubles, we will be able to increase our win total from previous years.”

Two players who will feature prominently for SHU, both as a doubles team and individuals are sophomores Chloe Sher and Rocio Portela. Following a freshman campaign that saw them consistently play at the top of the lineup for the Pirates, the pair of second-year players is prepared to make their mark on the new year.

Sher is coming off a debut season that ranks as one of the most productive in school history. She recorded 19 individual victories, all while playing in the number one slot, in addition to

a victory at the 2010 ITA Tournament. The 20 victories tied for the ninth most by a player in a single season in school history.

Sher and Portela also frequently teamed to comprise the Pirates’ top doubles pairing. As a team, the two freshmen recorded 11 doubles victories last season, matching the fifth highest total for any SHU pairing since 2001.

“Rocio and Chloe will continue to play vital roles for us,” Wyzykowski said. “They both have the ability to be ranked individually and as a doubles team. They also have a wealth of experience under their belt from their freshman year, so I think some of those nerves and the mistakes that come with them are no longer a factor. Through their play last year, they learned that they can compete with and beat a lot of girls at this level. I expect to see more confident play out of them this season.”

Joining the returning team members for Seton Hall will be three newcomers. Freshmen Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia), Maria Rodriguez (Bogota, Columbia) and Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) will all make their Pirate debuts this season. As with last year’s freshman class, these first-year players will look to make an immediate impact on the court.

“One of the most encouraging things that we have already seen with our freshmen is a willingness to put the work in,” said Wyzykowski. “I think we are developing a winning culture in our program and these three young ladies certainly fit that mold. Madison is very athletic and she will provide a boost for our doubles efforts. Maria and Anna also possess skills

that will allow them to be competitive right away. Their addition has undoubtedly strengthened our lineup as a whole and I fully expect to see their contributions translate into improved results for our team.” The outlook for the upcoming tennis season is a bright one for Seton Hall. A committed attitude along with improved lineup strength from top to bottom have the program poised to establish themselves as a consistent force in collegiate tennis.

“I think this year’s team is as close as it has been during my time here to having eight players of equal ability,” Wyzykowski said. “We are going to be at our best we combine that ability with a positive mindset. If our girls come to play every day, we can be a very dangerous team.”

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team fell, 6-1, to Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday. The Pirates were in most of the matches on the day, but sophomore Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) picked up the only team point.

Cordero won her No. 6 singles match over Emily Napier, 8-4. The players played just one pro-style set since the Knights had already clinched the dual match victory.

Cordero also teamed with Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) for a No. 3 doubles win against Dzana Ferhatbegovic and Napier, 8-4.

Freshmen Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) and Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) teamed up in No. 1 singles and played Elimine Botes and Inha Dementyeva to a tie-break, but ultimately fell, 9-8 (4).

Sher had another close match in her No. 1 singles contest against Botes. Sher took an early lead in set one, but Botes rallied to take the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (5). The players dueled to another tiebreak in the second set, and Botes finished the match with a 7-6 (2) set win.

Sunbul played a close match with Magav Leme in No. 3 singles. Leme took set one, 4-6, but Sunbul forced a third frame with a 7-6 (4), and narrowly missed out on a win after dropping the deciding set, 10-8.

VS. MARIST, AT ARMY - JANUARY 29, 2011

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Seton Hall tennis team topped Marist 6-1 before dropping a hard-fought 5-2 decision to Army to kick of its 2011 spring season.

Against the Red Foxes, junior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) posted a shutout in No. 4 singles over Retta Byron. Freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) also dominated with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Kelsey Raynor in No. 1 singles.

Freshman Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) each picked up three-set wins in No. 2 and 6 singles, respectively. Senior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) also was victorious in No. 3 singles against Joanna Sun.

In doubles action Sher and Portela teamed up in the No. 1 spot for an 8-3 triumph over Raynor and Joanna Sun. Cordero and Sunbul secured the doubles point with an 8-4 win in the No. 3 slot.

Portela earned another victory against Army’s Jessica Ahn in straight sets in No. 2 singles. Junior Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) picked up the second Seton Hall point after her opponent was forced to retire due to injury in the third set of the match.

Sher and Cordero each won the first sets of their singles matches against the Black Knights, but could not hold on. Sunbul and Cordero were able to earn a doubles win, and the Pirates almost came away with the doubles point after a brilliant comeback by Sher and Portela in the No. 1 position.

The freshman duo rallied from a 2-7 deficit, but rallied to tie the contest at, 8-8, to force a tiebreak. Ultimately, Kelsey Raynor and Joanna Sun were able to earn the win.

In No. 1 singles freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) played a tight match against nationally ranked Anna Edelman. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Sher forced a tiebreak in the second, but ultimately fell, 7-5, in the extra session.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Seton Hall tennis team fell to Cincinnati, 7-0, on Sun-day. The Pirates fall to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST.

Freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) once again was the closest singles player to coming up with a win. Sher dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Ksenia Slynko in the No. 1 position.

In doubles, Sher and classmate Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) came up short in the No. 1 slot, falling to the duo of Slynko and Jas-mine Lee, 8-4.

AT NAVY, VS. HOWARD - FEBRUARY 26, 2011

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Seton Hall tennis team lost to Navy, 4-3, and Howard, 7-0, in a double-header on Saturday.

Against Navy, freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) got back on the winning track, topping Amanda Griffin in three sets. Junior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) picked up a straight set victory over Stefanie Ton in the No. 3 position. Senior Slavina Kaplonska (Sofia, Bulgaria) won a hard-fought match that saw the first set go to a tiebreak and the third go to extra games in No. 6 action.

SHU almost came away with the doubles point after Sher and Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) took down Griffin and Erin Snook in the No. 1 slot. In No. 2, Verow and Michelle Weerasinghe (Edina, Minn.) held an early lead, but could not hold off the pair of Emani Decquir and Ton to get the second win.

Against Howard, the Pirates were blanked for the fourth time in their last five matches. Seton Hall did manage to pick up a win in No. 3 doubles after Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) downed the Bison’s pair.

WESTFIELD, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team lost fell to #69 Marquette, 7-0, in its home opener on Friday.

In No. 1 doubles, the duo of Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) and Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) shocked the Golden Eagles’ top pair of Gillian Hush and Christina Ruiz with an 8-6 win. SHU almost stole the doubles point, but Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) and Michelle Weerasinghe (Edina, Minn.) were edged, 8-6, in a back-and-forth match.

Weerasinghe gave Rocio Diaz a difficult match, but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 position.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Seton Hall tennis team lost to James Madison, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) topped Kinsey Pate in No. 1 singles in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. Junior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) was the only other SHU player that was victorious, topping Kath-erine Bulling in No. 3 action, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

The Dukes took all three doubles matches to earn that point in the match.

Playing shorthanded due to injuries, the Seton Hall tennis team came up just short in a 4-3 loss to Sacred Heart on Tuesday. The Pirates (1-9) had to forfeit No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles since they could not field a full squad.

Freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) shutout Kate Donnelly in No. 1 singles in straight sets. Senior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) pulled out a hard-fought three-set decision in No. 2 singles, winning the first set in a tiebreak and going to extra games in the third set. Junior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) took down Gabby Kaldan in straight sets.

Sher and Sunbul held a 5-2 advantage in their No. 1 doubles match, but could not hang on as the Pioneers came from behind to take that match and the doubles point.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Seton Hall tennis team won its second straight match, a 6-1 defeat of Robert Morris to conclude its spring break trip. The Pirates (3-9) were still shorthanded, but won every match they competed in.

Freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) continued her dominant week, taking out Cla-rissa Chen 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. The game she dropped in the second set was her first concession in three matches. Sophomore Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezu-ela) was impressive in her first match back after injury, winning in the No. 4 spot 6-1, 6-0 over Carla Limon.

SHU had to re-form its doubles pairs after senior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) left the lineup due to injury. Sher teamed with junior Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) and easily topped the Colonials pair of Carolina Mourao Teixeira and Limon.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Still shorthanded due to injury, the Seton Hall tennis team pulled out a 5-2 win to snap a nine-match losing streak. The Pirates (2-9) had to forfeit No. 5 and 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, but won the other five contests to get their first victory since the opening match of the spring.

For the second straight match, freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) did not lose a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jennifer Blackburne in the No. 1 singles slot. Senior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey), junior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England), and junior Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Ca-lif.) all went into three sets, but ultimately came up victorious for the Hall.

MANASQUAN, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team fell to Rutgers, 7-0, on Tues-day. The Pirates drop to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in BIG EAST play.

Freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) had her six match win-streak snapped by Amy Zhang of Rutgers. Sher narrowly fell in the first set, 7-5, but rallied to even the match after winning set two, 6-3. Since the match had already been decided, the third set was played as a 10-point tiebreak. Sher ultimately fell, 10-8, to Zhang, who has not lost a home singles match in her three-plus years with the Scarlet Knights.

The rest of the squad fell in straight sets.

The doubles teams for SHU set the tone to start the match with the pairs of Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) and Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) along with Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) and Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) coasting to victories to seal the doubles point.

In singles play, senior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) turned in a dominating performance in the No. 3 slot. Sunbul beat Amanda Nelson in straight sets without surrendering a game. Portela had the toughest match of the day, pulling out a three-set victory against Allison Solberg in the No. 2 position.

AT georgetown - april 10, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Seton Hall fell to Georgetown, 6-1, on Sunday. The Pirates drop to 5-13 overall and 2-7 in BIG EAST matches.

Freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) pulled off a huge upset in No. 1 singles to secure SHU’s lone point. After dropping the first set, Sher bounced back to defeat Stephanie Wetmore by scores of 6-2 and 10-4. Wetmore is a graduate transfer student from the 2010 National Champions UCLA. As a junior, Wetmore was ranked top 100 in the world by the ITF.

Freshman Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) played dropped a tight first set to Lauren Greco in No. 2 singles, but had to retire due to injury early in the second frame.

SHU almost came away with a doubles point after the No. 1 pair of Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) and Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) knocked off the Red Storm’s top pair, 8-5. The duo of Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) and Michelle Weerasinghe (Edina, Minn.) held a 4-1 lead in the No. 2 slot, but did not win another game and fell, 8-4.

Sher won her No. 1 singles match against Nevena Selakovic after getting off to a slow start. Sher used an extra game to take set one, 7-5, but coasted and won 6-0 to take the match.

STORRS, Conn. - The Seton Hall tennis team lost to Connecticut, 6-1, on Friday. The Pirates fall to 5-13 overall and 2-7 in BIG EAST play.

Freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) won for the 10th time in her last 11 matches, dominating Jennifer Learmonth in straight sets to gain SHU’s only point of the day.

The No. 2 doubles pair of Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) and Mi-chelle Weerasinghe (Edina, Minn.) won a highly competitive contest in a tiebreak over Alexa Gregory and Abby McKeon, 9-8 (7).

at providence - april 16, 2011 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Seton Hall tennis team beat Providence, 5-2, in its BIG EAST finale.

After sweeping the doubles portion of the competition, SHU overcame a tough blow when freshman Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) was forced to retire in her No. 1 singles match due to injury. However, her teammates picked up the slack, and did not drop a set in their four victories.

With hopes of a trip to the conference tournament on the line, seniors Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) and Slavina Kaplonska (Sofia, Bulgaria) picked up big wins in singles. Sunbul won her match in the No. 3 slot, 7-5, 6-2, over Ayushi Sinha. Kaplonska moved into the lineup after an injury and was dominate in her victory over Alex Gerry, dropping just one game in her No. 4 match.

NEWARK, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team lost to NJIT on Thursday to wrap up its regular season. The Pirates finished 6-14 and will wait to hear if they have earned a spot in the BIG EAST Championship on Monday.

The doubles pair of Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) and Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) earned victory in the No. 1 slot. They topped the duo of Nina Mayevska and Jana Luste, 8-4.

Sher put up a strong fight against Ksenia Kuzmenko in No. 1 singles, winning the first set by a score of 6-2. In the second, the freshman came up just short, 7-5, and fell by a two-game margin in the third set as well.

Sophomore Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) forced a third set in her No. 5 match, but ultimately fell, 10-7, in the deciding frame.

From there, train, bus or walk to the neighborhood of your choice. Time Square’s Theater District: plays and musicals. DR. A. GABRIELESTEBANUNIVERSITY PRESIDENT, SETON HALL UNIVERSITY

Gabriel Esteban, Ph.D., was appointed Interim President of Seton Hall University in July 2010. Since 2007, Dr. Esteban served as Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Seton Hall University. As Provost, he oversaw eight colleges and schools, University Libraries, and Enrollment Services.

Dr. Esteban led the Strategic Planning initiative, collaborated with faculty and academic leaders on enhancing and adding undergraduate and graduate programs, establishing academic priorities, and strengthening the centrality of academics at SHU. Since 2009, Dr. Esteban has also been responsible for Enrollment Services and is leading the change in Enrollment Management Strategy. Dr. Esteban was previously Provost (2003-2007), Dean of the College of Business and Tenured Professor of Marketing at the University of Central Arkansas (2001-2003). He served as Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at Arkansas Tech University (1996-2001) and was an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Victoria. Dr. Esteban was also a full-time instructor at the College of Business Administration of the University of the Philippines.

Dr. Esteban is active in various national, regional, and community groups and served on a national task force that designed a Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA) for universities and colleges. He is also involved in Leadership Education for Asian-Pacifics (LEAP) as a mentor and faculty member. Dr. Esteban served as team chair and consultant evaluator for the largest regional accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission and also served as a member of their Accreditation Review Council. At the local level, Dr. Esteban was past chair of the boards of the Conway Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Shelter of Central Arkansas. And served on the board of the Faulkner County Habitat for Humanity He is currently a member of the Board of the Asian-Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE), and the South Orange Performing Arts Center.

Dr. Esteban has published papers in refereed journals and proceedings, and presented papers at national, international and regional conferences such as TIMS/ORSA, American Psychological Association, Western Decision Sciences Conference, and the International Trade and Finance Association.

Dr. Esteban received a Ph.D. in Administration from the Graduate School of Management at the University of California at Irvine in 1993 and a Master of Science in Japanese Business Studies from Chaminade University in Honolulu in 1986. He earned a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. Dr. Esteban received specialized training in Leading Transformation and Change at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, and he completed the Japan Management Program at the Japan-America Institute for Management Science in Honolulu. He also has private sector work experience in the Philippines and in Japan.

LYONSDirector of Athletics and Recreational Services

Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011.

Lyons comes to Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics. Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and 21 Division I athletic programs. He has also shown a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offices.

Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department has seen unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. The men’s cross country team continued its storied success earning a second straight national runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship in November 2008. The program has finished in the Top-10 at the national championship in each of the last nine years. Along with the University of Wisconsin, no other program has seen the same success. The men’s and women’s basketball programs have established a reputation for being one of the top programs in the MAAC. The women enjoyed their most successful five-year stint in program history and have made three postseason appearances in the last four seasons. The men’s program earned an NCAA Championship appearance in 2006, won 21 games in 2009-10 and has continued to rank among the leaders in the MAAC and the New York Metropolitan Area.

Other Gael programs that saw success under Lyons tutelage have been the women’s cross country team with five straight MAAC Championships, the softball program earning its first ever bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010, the men’s soccer program with a MAAC Regular Season Championship in 2009 and a MAAC finals appearance in 2010. The volleyball team reached the NCAA Championship in 2004 and returned to the MAAC finals in 2010. In addition, Iona’s women’s lacrosse and women’s water polo programs continued to excel in 2009-10.

Where Lyons truly made his mark at Iona has been in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history. Among several enhancements, the most dramatic and impressive changes were the opening of both the Hynes Athletics Center and the Judge Student-Athlete Academic Center in January of 2006. Lyons also oversaw the complete renovation of the varsity locker rooms - where each program now has its own space for the first time in school history, the addition of a video screening room for its athletic programs as well as the resurfacing of both the Hynes Center basketball/volleyball arena floor and the surface of Mazzella Field, home

of the soccer and lacrosse programs. In addition, Iona created Rice Oval Softball field, the first on-campus home for the softball program.

Before elevating to his current role, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. This included, but was not limited to, all fundraising activities and marketing for the department including the annual golf tournament, sponsorships, and the annual fund.

Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. He oversaw all NCAA, MAAC, and institutional policies and regulations, as well as team scheduling, student-athlete financial aid, the student-athlete advisory committee, and payroll for all staff as well as student-workers. Lyons also coordinated the NCAA certification process, from the self study to on-campus visits.

As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons.

A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete.

In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College.

Lyons has served on several committees at the national and conference level. He is a member of the NCAA Division I Championships and Sports Management Cabinet where he serves as a liaison to the men’s and women’s ice hockey committees. Lyons served as the Chairman of MAAC Cross Country Committee and previously as chairman of the MAAC Committee on Athletics Administration. He also serves on the MAAC Marketing and Strategic Planning Committees.

Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, a pediatric nurse practitioner and clinical faculty at Columbia University.

Intercollegiate athletics is a rewarding extracurricular activity that can add a special dimension to student life. At Seton Hall, all student-athletes participate in the academic counseling program. Director of Academic Support Services for student-athletes, Matt Geibel, and his staff help ensure that student-athletes successfully balance their commitments to academics and athletics.

Geibel, Associate Director Amanda DiDonato, Academic Advisor Ryan Westman and two graduate assistant, Kaitlyn Rogers and Zachary Romash provide support along with learning consultants and numerous tutors.

They monitor classroom performance by maintaining contact with faculty, monitoring study halls, facilitating advisement and overseeing compliance with university and NCAA academic regulations. The office of Academic Support also coordinates all institutional, regional and national award recognition.

Life Skills MissionTo provide life skills support in the areas of academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service through the distribution of NCAA, BIG EAST Conference and Seton Hall resources. Seton Hall University’s Life Skills program will provide on-going educational opportunities to student-athletes to further develop these areas and make our student-athletes into successful leaders of the future.

Athletics ExcellenceSeton Hall is committed to excellence in all areas and strives to provide its programs with the resources to succeed on the field of competition. The Department of Athletics will seek out top professionals to serve as coaches, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning specialists who can impart expert knowledge and direction to the student-athletes.

Academic ExcellenceSeton Hall provides a comprehensive academic support program for its Student-Athletes. Specifically, the Office of Academic Support Services for Student Athletes provides tutoring, review sessions, study groups and writing development for Seton Hall student-athletes, as well as regular interaction with faculty.

Career DevelopmentSeton Hall provides a comprehensive career development program for its student-athletes in conjunction with The Career Center at Seton Hall University. Components of the program range from resume writing and interviewing techniques, to the graduate school application processes, seminars from business leaders within the Seton Hall community and education on post-graduate scholarship opportunities.

Personal DevelopmentSeton Hall provides several seminars on different personal topics throughout the year. Workshops vary from sports nutrition to hazing prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, and business etiquette.

The primary objective of the Seton Hall sports medicine staff is to provide the highest quality of evidenced based health care to the University’s student-athletes. In so doing we strive to limit risk and exposure to injury mechanisms, provide immediate response to all medical needs of the student-athlete and rehabilitate any and all injuries suffered by the student-athlete. The three main goals of the Seton Hall University sports medicine staff are that all student-athletes are safe and free of injury, all student-athletes achieve their maximum athletic potential, and all Seton Hall University Athletic teams achieve BIG EAST Conference success.

Seton Hall student-athletes enjoy a 2,500-square foot varsity weight room, which opened in the fall of 1997. The facility offers versatile, multi-purpose and comprehensive upper and lower body strength training equipment. Among the features of the facility are an Olympic lifting area and cardiovascular equipment such as Stairmasters, treadmills, bicycles and a versaclimber. The room offers free weights, target-loaded machines and circuit training stations. Khyl Farrison and Angelo Gingerelli work with each team to provide expert coaching and guidance.

FROM WEST JERSEY (ALLENTOWN, PA AND ROUTE 78 EAST): Take Route 78 East. At the split for express or local exits take “Local Exits” to exit 49B, 124 East & Maplewood. Follow road (Springfield Ave.) to first jug handle (Valley Street - The Oranges). Take jug handle onto Valley Street. Go eight traffic lights and turn right onto South Orange Ave. The University is one mile on your right.FROM WEST JERSEY (STROUDSBURG, PA AND ROUTE 80): Take Route 80 East to Route 280 East. Take Exit 11 (Center Street) and turn right at third light onto South Center Street. Go two traffic lights to South Orange Avenue. The University’s main gate is located at this junction.

FROM NEWARK AIRPORT (78 WEST): Follow signs for 78 West. Take 78 West to the Millburn Exit (50B). Turn right off exit ramp on to Vauxhaull Road, and go through two traffic lights (one immediately after your right turn). At third traffic light turn right onto Valley Street. Follow Valley Street about 3-4 miles. You will go through six traffic lights. At seventh traffic light (South Orange Avenue, major intersection) turn right. Follow South Orange Avenue approx. 3/4 of a mile. You will pass the campus on your right before you get to the entrance.

The 2011-12 academic year is the 33rd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2011-12 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference.

The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2010-11 year was no different.

Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners, while 22 earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut men’s basketball team won its third national championship, completing a magical run through five games of the BIG EAST Championship and six wins in the NCAA tournament. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team won its third NCAA title, while BIG EAST teams reached national championship games in women’s basketball (Notre Dame) and men’s soccer (Louisville).

The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the second time in the last three years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Indianapolis, capping a season in which the Huskies extended their NCAA-record winning streak to 90 games.

Individually, BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships, including an unprecedented four by Villanova’s Sheila Reid. Reid was the 2010 individual cross country champion, a member of the Wildcats’ winning indoor distance medley relay team and won the 5,000- and 1,500-meter titles in outdoor track & field. Louisville’s Matt Hughes, meanwhile, repeated as the NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA outdoor meet.

Moore and Reid joined Notre Dame soccer standout Melissa Henderson as winners of Honda Sports Awards as the top performers in their respective sports. Moore also became the first three-time winner of the Wade Trophy as the nation’s top women’s basketball player and joined Villanova lacrosse player Brian Karalunas as winners of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group.

Connecticut claimed the league’s Bowl Championship Series bid for the first time as the Huskies shared the conference title with Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record for the second straight year.

The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. When Texas Christian University joins the conference in the 2012-13 academic year, the conference will have a footprint in 30 percent of the nation’s television households.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 31 national championships in six different sports and 133 student-athletes have won individual national titles.

In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won four of the last 13 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 12 NCAA titles.

Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance.

While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics.

Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference.

John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair in 2009 and has continued to steer the conference on its path of success.

The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past eight years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball.

The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.
