“FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS” Have a great month! August 2011
Angel of August
She’s regal in splendor,
this angel of love.
Cascading her flowers from heaven above.
To fall from the sky, to land with her peace
The angel of August
Her heart always seeks
The flowers you gather, that fall from the sky
Her gift of the spirit
That soars way up high.
A scent in the air, a petal that lands
In velvet she greets you
Wherever you stand
She touches your soul, with all of her love
Sprinkles her softness
With joy from above
Look up to the sky, to see heaven’s light
It’s the angel of August
That gives such delight
So far this summer season we have not been threatened by any hurricane’s etc. We are blessed to be living in such a protected area away from all the high waters and the coastal areas that do get hit the most. We have had our occasions of hard rain with thunder and lightning but nothing to speak of.
Please heed warnings you are given by the media on radio or tv.
Everyone who lives here in Florida knows that we are the lightning capital of the USA. So if you are in the pool area and it looks like rain or you hear the thunder, we are advising you to get out of the pool area immediately. Also, tell your visitors or family about this situation.
The pool area was struck by lightning just a few years back, so please be cautious.
Better to be safe then sorry!!!!!!!!

Bulletin Board and Signs and E-mail
Remember to always check the Bulletin Boards and the Wilds Road sign/Mail Boxes/Handouts for any
updates in case it did not make the newsletter.
In June we had updates on clubhouse restoration and we posted on the bulletin boards, all updates.
Our other source we will be using a lot is via email. When we need to get out to everyone on any
current issues or concerns (ie: water problems etc.), the email lists will be used. To date we have 77
email addresses and if you have a computer with internet and want to be on this list, please send your
email address to: [email protected]
Thanks, Phyllis
The old maid was asked why she never married. She said there is no need as I have three pets which
serve the same purpose……..The dog growls all morning, the parrot swears all afternoon, and the cat
comes home late at night……………
Page 4
Southfork ClubHouse
Renovations are complete
As you all know, the clubhouse (our 2nd
home away from home) was closed from June 10 to July 3rd
for
the restoration of the clubhouse and it is amazing and like a new place. Every floor, in every room,
including all the closets (main room, library, card room, bathrooms and the kitchen) has a new tiled floor
and to top that off we have all new ceilings to go with it. Dream and wish lists do come true…………..
The outside of the building is not being neglected at all either and the trees are trimmed, new counter in
the cabana area and even the poolside bathrooms are clean etc. and more to come!
Monday, July 4th
at 10am there was a flag raising ceremony. The new managers purchased a new flag
for out in the front area and since this was the day of the grand viewing of the hall and also the 4th
, they
invited the entire community to come to the flag raising ceremony. What a way to start the 4th
, with a
bang so to speak!!!
This could not have happened the way it did without the sweat and hard work of our current managers,
John & Sandi. Over a period of 3 weeks on any given day, John was on a step ladder with the ceilings,
fixing and repairing etc. and this is something that will never be forgotten and we owe them a hearty
“THANK YOU” from the entire community!
The “snowbirds” will be in for a treat to see the work accomplished during the summer months!
Cady’s Zoo
There were 4 lost baby kittens that were brought to the Cady Zoo that were left on a door step on
Maverick Drive and a frantic call was made by a neighbor to Dot for someone to come and rescue them.
Of course Dot was not going to have them put down and brought them home and feed and took care of
them along with the rest of her animals.
Besides these kittens, ToTo (dog), Angel (cat), George (talking bird) and the baby parakeet were made
to share their home with them. Angel, the cat was in a snit and did not want to share and George
directed them while ToTo, baby sat them.
After many pleas and word of mouth the four kittens were finally adopted to gracious residents here in
the park. Now everything and everyone is back to normal again!!!!!!

FROM THE MANAGERS
A Bigger and Better Clubhouse?
By now you have all probably seen the “renovated” clubhouse. Not only were the floors replaced with tile
and the ceilings redone with acoustical tile but we also made the clubhouse bigger! Well, at least it seems
that way. In addition to the floors and ceilings, the were some less obvious improvements made; like
adding insulation to the card room and the library and re-carpeting the stage. And we made it by the fourth!
There are many people that helped make this happen; thanks to all. (We know, the bingo players missed 3
weeks of bingo, but isn’t the result worth it?)
Other Improvements
You may also have noticed some other improvements around the community. But in case you haven’t …
the island in the pool cabana has been refurbished with a new granite tile top and repainted doors; all the
palms have been trimmed; mulch is being spread around all the common areas; flowers have been planted
at the entrance signs … and there is more to come. Also, by the time you receive this, we hope to have a
new “sail” put up in the pool area for extra shade.
Oops - No Water
We recently lost our water supply which was caused by a similar failure as the one that occurred on our 1st
day here as community managers. (Is this going to be a pattern? We hope not). We took extra steps this
time to help minimize the possibility of a similar failure occurring again. And rest assured that the water
quality was not compromised during this failure, but we needed to issue “boil water” notices as required by
the DEP. And, although the notification process was much better that the 1st time, it still could use some
improvement, which we are working on.
More Friendly Reminders
We have noticed several cars parked in driveways of homes where the owners are back north or cars are in
driveways without owner’s approval. Please remember that you must have an owner’s permission to use
their driveway otherwise you are considered trespassing.
As part of our jobs as community managers, we need to make sure all properties are being maintained as
required by the community rules. We all want our community to look it’s best. We have noticed some
homes with “green” north sides and some lawns and flower or shrub gardens that need weeding and some
trees that need pruning. Sooo ..we will be going through the community and will be issuing friendly
reminders that some maintenance may be required on your home.
Solicitors
It has come to our attention that there are some solicitors wandering through the community trying to
“drum up” business. If you have someone knocking on your door or stopping you in the street trying to sell
you something, please get their information and let us know so we can remind them they cannot go about
our community soliciting business.
Let’s keep Southfork beautiful; See you around the community!

Always take a small magnet on your vacation, they come in handy at the end of it. This is pretty good
info. Never even thought about key cards containing anything other than an access code for the room
HOTEL KEY CARD
Ever wonder what is on your magnetic key card?
Answer:
a. Customer's name
B. Customer's partial home address
C. Hotel room number
D. Check-in date and out dates
E. Customer's credit card number and expiration date !
When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any employee to
access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner. An employee can take a hand full of cards
home and using a scanning device, access the information onto a laptop computer and go shopping at
your expense.
Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee reissues the card to
the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest's information is electronically 'overwritten' on the
card and the previous guest's information is erased in the overwriting process.
But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it usually is kept in a drawer at the front desk with
YOUR INFORMATION ON IT!
The bottom line is: Keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them. NEVER leave them
behind in the room or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the front desk when you check
out of a room. They will not charge you for the card (it's illegal) and you'll be sure you are not leaving
a lot of valuable personal information on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning
device card reader.
For the same reason, if you arrive at the airport and discover you still have the card key in your
pocket, do not toss it in an airport trash basket. Take it home and destroy it by cutting it up, especially
through the electronic information strip!
If you have a small magnet, pass it across the magnetic strip several times. Then try it in the door, it
will not work. It erases everything on the card.

from the Association President
Dear Friends,
By now, I hope you have seen our beautiful Club house renovations, which are still a work in progress.
There were many hands involved and a lot of hard work. Thank you all!!!!
Officers and Directors are meeting to prepare for our annual meeting with Scott Heiler and Paul Johnson
to discuss future rent increases and needs.
The answers to our surveys tells us that your major concerns are that there has been no Social Security
increases for the past three years and your necessary expenses have increased along with the resnt
every year.
We cannot make any promises, but we will certainly try to represent all of the residents of Southfork
and your needs.

Guidelines for Drug Disposal (Dade City Police @ 521-1495 for disposal)
• Follow any specific disposal instructions on the drug label or patient information that
accompanies the medication. Do not flush prescription drugs down the toilet unless this
information specifically instructs you to do so.
• If no instructions are given on the drug label and no take-back program is available in your
area, throw the drugs in the household trash, but first:
o Take them out of their original containers and mix them with an undesirable substance,
such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter. The medication will be less appealing to
children and pets, and unrecognizable to people who may intentionally go through your
trash.
o Put them in a sealable bag, empty can, or other container to prevent the medication
from leaking or breaking out of a garbage bag.
• Before throwing out a medicine container, scratch out all identifying information on the
prescription label to make it unreadable. This will help protect your identity and the privacy of
your personal health information.
• Do not give medications to friends. Doctors prescribe drugs based on a person's specific
symptoms and medical history. A drug that works for you could be dangerous for someone else.
• When in doubt about proper disposal, talk to your pharmacist.
Drugs such as powerful narcotic pain relievers and other controlled substances carry instructions for
flushing to reduce the danger of unintentional use or overdose and illegal abuse.
For example, the fentanyl patch, an adhesive patch that delivers a potent pain medicine through the
skin, comes with instructions to flush used or leftover patches. Too much fentanyl can cause severe
breathing problems and lead to death in babies, children, pets, and even adults, especially those who
have not been prescribed the drug. "Even after a patch is used, a lot of the drug remains in the patch,"
says the writer, "so you wouldn't want to throw something in the trash that contains a powerful and
potentially dangerous narcotic that could harm others."
Another environmental concern lies with inhalers used by people who have asthma or other breathing
problems, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Traditionally, many inhalers have contained
chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's), a propellant that damages the protective ozone layer. The CFC inhalers are
being phased out and replaced with more environmentally friendly inhalers.
Depending on the type of product and where you live, inhalers and aerosol products may be thrown into
household trash or recyclables, or may be considered hazardous waste and require special handling.
Read the handling instructions on the label, as some inhalers should not be punctured or thrown into a
fire or incinerator. To ensure safe disposal, contact Dade City Police Dept. who have a disposal box.

BEE STINGS
This information seen in the internet may be something to remember, as this
season will soon be here again...
It might be wise to carry a penny in your pocket while working in the yard.......... BEE STINGS !
A couple of weeks ago, A woman was stung by both a bee and hornet while working in the garden.
Her arm swelled up, and she went to the doctor. The clinic gave her cream and an antihistamine. The
next day the swelling was getting progressively worse, so she went to her regular doctor. The arm was
Infected and needed an antibiotic. The doctor told her - " The next time you get stung, put a penny on
the bite for 15 minutes". She could not believe this advice!!!!!!
That night, her niece was stung by two bees. She looked at the bite and it had already started to swell.
So, she taped a penny to her arm for 15 minutes. The next morning, there was no sign of a bite and
decided that her niece wasn't allergic to the sting.
Soon, she was gardening outside and got stung again, twice by a hornet on her left hand. She thought,
here I go again to the doctor for another antibiotic.
She promptly got her money out and taped two pennies to her bites, then sat and
sulked for 15 minutes. The penny took the string out of the bite immediately.
In the meantime the hornets were attacking, and her friend was stung on the
thumb. Again the penny. The next morning she could only see the spot where the
hornet had stung her. No redness, no swelling. Her friend's sting was the same;
couldn't even tell where she had been stung.
Just wanted to share this marvelous information in case you experience the same problem. We need
to keep a stock of pennies on hand.
The doctor said that the copper in the penny counteracts the bite.
It definitely works!
Please remember and pass this information on to your friends, children, grandchildren

WOW!! Jus' wait 'til you see it.
After a short respite, this roving reporter is back on the prowl covering
the goin's on here at Southfork. (Actually, how could I rest with all of that noise goin' on). As you
might have heard thru the grapevine, there have been some improvements happen' over at the main
meetin' house (Clubhouse).
There has been a cacophony of noises includin' saws whinin', drills drillin', hammers poundin' and
laborers gruntin'. It seems that our prayers have been answered and that awful old stained rug is now
history and has been replaced with shiny new ceramic tile (including the inside out-houses). The old,
leak stained, ceiling tile have been removed and replaced with 2 foot square acoustical tiles that
actually extend down slightly from the suspension grid for a totally nice and refreshing new look.
The windows and blinds have been thoroughly cleaned and now some light can actually shine in to
illuminate the new floor. New (matching) globes have been installed on the fans, a new transition
strip now surrounds the dance floor and the old A/C filters, that were so fuzzy that they looked like a
alpaca in the wintertime, have been replaced.
Additional insulation was installed in the card room and the library to make activities in those rooms
more enjoyable since you will now actually be able to feel the air conditioning and/or heating working
(as Gomer Pyle used to say, “GAWLEEE").
On the outside, new mulch and plantings are being added to the landscaping to refresh those areas
around the main entrance signs, clubhouse, the pool area and the area adjacent to the entrance at
Wilds Road. Also the pool cabana countertop will soon sport a new ceramic tile top.
This newshound, and agile individual, has also heard rumors of more improvements including a
possible new roof on the cluhouse, some new paint and some major improvements on the signage
throughout the park (more on that later).
These improvements are a testimony to the relationship and the new era of goodwill between your
Association Board of Directors, our new General Manager, Paul Johnston and of course our new Park
Managers John and Sandi Bartoszek.
I just can't wait for ya to see it for yourselves, so for all of your snowbirds, drive safely and hurry back
to your friends and extended family here at Southfork.
This has been your roving reporter who always has his ear to the ground just waitin' for somethin'
else to happen.

Recently thiz roving reporter was taking hiz nightly constitutional in hiz yellow &

It seemz that some hearty soulz had seized thee opportunity to participate in thee anciente Sporte of
Royaltie. Several nobelmen and their genteel ladiez faire were holding courte on thee recently
manicured and properly prepared fieldz of playe. Now don't take thiz newshound incorrectly, they were
not playing polo or particpating in jousting and sword play but rather a rouzing game of horseshoez.
Participantz included Katherine thee Great exhibiting a rather intersting pitching form. Prince Lefty

Rook Robust Robert and Little John sat quietly on thee sidelinez apparently sitting in thee injured and
