The 2011 Sundance Film Festival kicked o! Friday and features a wide range of material by individuals that hail from essentially every continent around the globe. Although a handful of the festival’s selections feature familiar names such as Kevin Smith (“Clerks”) or Morgan Spurlock (“Super Size Me”) behind the camera, most "lms being screened are either the work of novices or professional screen thespians that are making their directorial debut.

THE GUARDWriter/director John Michael McDonagh’s o!beat feature debut, “The
Guard” boasts a delicious turn from Brendan Gleeson as Sgt. Gerry Boyle, a wickedly subversive, small-town Irish lawman who is forced to aid a clean-cut U.S. FBI agent, played by the ever-solid Don Cheadle, in his investigation of a multimillion dollar drug-smuggling operation. Cops and criminals alike engage in Quentin Tarantino-esque exchanges laced with references to obscure cinema, literature and philosophy in “The Guard,” which isn’t quite as sharply written or well-directed as its in"uences. It’s still an entertaining and darkly comical tale that is part unconventional buddy cop comedy, but mostly a character piece about an o#cer whose humanity still shines through the protective curtain of acerbic manner and caustic wit he casts around himself.
NARRATIVE FEATURES:
TYRANNOSAURAn intolerably su!ocating air of melancholy lingers throughout “Tyrannosaur,”
English actor Paddy Considine’s feature-length writing/directing debut, which details the budding relationship that forms between a bitter, self-destructive man named Joseph, and Hannah, a gentle Christian charity-shop worker and abused housewife. Leads Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman give touching performances, and cinematographer Erik Wilson has a nice eye for darkly saturated visuals that re"ect the characters’ harsh, lonely world—it’s a shame that Considine’s direction is so sluggish and his detestably manipu-lative screenplay piles on unpleasant melodrama to irritating e!ect. “Tyrannosaur” aims to be a raw, authentic meditation about "awed people forced to endure unbearably painful experiences, but is instead an emotionally exploitative and gratuitous drama that lacks the sensitive touch necessary to handle its brutal subject matter. Compiled by Sandy Schaefer
THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967!1975“The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975” is composed entirely of decades-old
16 mm footage shot by Swedish journalists who sought to offer an outsider’s perspective on the 20th century black power movement in America. It com-bines rare, personal interviews with pivotal figures like Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis and Eldridge Cleaver, among others, with modern-day voice-over commentary by artists and activists whose ranks include Harry Belafonte and Erykah Badu, to offer a unique perspective on a tumultuous period in more recent U.S. history. The semi-experimental structure of “Black Power Mixtape” is intriguing but messy and fails to form a cohesive whole out of its fascinating elements—still, director Göran Hugo Olsson deserves credit for delivering an undeniably unique documentary.
DOCUMENTARY FEATURES:
KNUCKLEIan Palmer spent 12 years chronicling the feud between two interrelated Irish and
United Kingdom clans, the Joyces and the Quinn McDonaghs, and compressed his un-wieldy but intimate video recordings into a harrowing, 92-minute documentary simply titled “KNUCKLE.” The end result is di#cult to watch but an engaging real-life work that o!ers an un$ltered look at the bare-knuckle duels that clan members undertake as a matter of honor—even though most of the participants possess little to no knowledge about the origin of the groups’ schism. “KNUCKLE” drags at times (no pun intended) as scenes of sweat-riddled, pasty white men beating one another bloody pile up and the mindless cycle of celebrated violence becomes increasingly di#cult to tolerate—but that’s ultimately part of the larger point that Palmer is making.

Diversity makes military a stronger force
Dubair007posted 1.25.11 @ 12:54 p.m.“You Have raised some good points, I however have to disagree. The UAE hosts major sporting events every Year, and the Booze Flows Freely. They have an Identical lIquor law system as Qatar. But Since you visited Saudi Arabia, your point of view is understandable as you have gotten the Worst Possible impression of the Middle East barring Iraq maybe.”

Mid. East Majposted 1.25.11 @ 1:10 p.m.“I’d have to say I disagree, Saudi Arabia has many amazing
but it’s not the worst place. Syria, Iran among others would be a worst place to gain an impression. I don’t think that Kelsey is making the point Saudi is an awful country, rather the culture in the Middle East is very different in terms of sports and alcohol. Cultural differences, especially when it comes to alcohol, is still going to create a problem in Qatar. Look at the statements by the head of their bid committee regarding homosexuals. And let’s be serious, the Euro soccer culture is very different than the Mid. East soccer culture. It is going to be a major headache regardless of actual laws.Dubai is totally different than the rest of the Middle East, and doesn’t negate that nothing the UAE has hosted compares to the World Cup. Qatar is much more conservative than Dubai, and their laws are not the same, I don’t know where you got that impression. Similar yes, but they are enforced differently. Dubai is the Vegas of the Middle East. Qatar falls in between Saudi and the UAE in terms of conservatism, this is true, but Dubai is more the exception than the norm.”
Anonymousposted 1.25.11 @ 2:59 p.m.“Both of these previous comments are well founded, unlike the state-ments presented in the article. Kelsey, you cannot make generalizations about the whole middle east based on your winter break in Saudi Arabia (during which you learned all about the culture in the malls). Doha is a lot more like Abu Dhabi than Saudi as far as alcohol is concerned, and it’s becoming more liberal very year.”
Tammi Diazposted 1.19.11 via Facebook“This such a Waste of Taxpayers Dollars, it is only 2 Miles it will have Several Stops on the Route and it will be Faster to Drive than take the Street-Car, plus UTA does not have a Frequent and Convenient Bus System.”
Douglas Whiteposted 1.19.11 via Facebook“This is a great use of tax payer dollars. Everyone in the SugarHouse Trolley district will have easy access to anywhere TRAX goes- down-town, Sandy, Airport, U of U, West Jordan, etc. .Having a car would not be a necessity, for those living in the SH Trolley district.”
Lesilie Ramonasposted 1.19.11 @ 3:24 a.m.“This is great! I live in Sugar House... However, my only comment is, when will the west side folks get to see any decent transportation? Lots of industry jobs out there... Just sayin’.”
Emilyposted 1.19.11 @ 7:02 p.m.“Just a note: That pic is not a streetcar, and Sugar House isn’t getting a new TRAX line, as the caption says. It will be a slow-moving trolley, as the story describes.”
Tony posted 1.20.11 @ 1:00 a.m.
costs!! That is outrageous. What about ongoing costs after that? I guess this means the economic recession is over now because the government (you and me) has plenty of money to pay for things like this. Sure it will be fun to have things like this, but when times are tough, expenses need to be trimmed. You could have a natural gas bus running this route by next month, without tearing up all the streets and the awful overhead lines. And, if de-mand warrants it, plans for the streetcar could be looked into for the future.”
The United States’ current troop strength is 1,625,852, sec-
ond only to China’s troop force of 2,255,000. The next largest
military is India’s at 1,325,00, then Korea at 1,106,000 and
then Russia at 1,038,000. All other countries have considerably
smaller militaries.
