Naturesings!

October 30 and November 7

Celebrate the world around us with “Nature Sings!” From majestic mountains to tempestuous seas and from the four elements — earth, wind, fire, and water — to plant and animal life, experience how composers over the ages have celebrated planet Earth. Featuring Aaron Copland’s master-work “In the Beginning” for mezzo soprano soloist and unaccompanied choir, Les Chant des Oyseaux (“The Song of the Birds”) by Clément Janequin, “Sand County” by Jean Belmont Ford, six part-songs about nature by Felix Mendelssohn, and R. Murray Schafer’s frolicking (and a bit scandalous) “A Medi-eval Bestiary.”

october 30, 2010 — saturday at 7:30 p.m. conducted by Charles Bruffy trinity Episcopal cathedral 100 West Roosevelt in Phoenix

November 7, 2010 — sunday at 3:00 p.m. conducted by Charles Bruffy American lutheran church 17200 Del Webb Boulevard in Sun City

“this choir has broken through the wall that keeps local artists from achieving international stature, and it has done so in spectacular fash-ion...rock solid pitch, a depth and lucidity of tex-ture, and sheer energetic commitment.”

—Arizona republic

“orchestral and choral conductors often use noticeably different gestures. When charles Bruffy led [this concert] . . . he seemed to be sculpturing in air; carefully molding each finely hued note he coaxed from his choristers.”

—New York times

chantANDBeyondFebruary 13, 19, and 20

From Gregorian chant to modern-day chant infused masterworks, we’ll explore the influence of monks and chant throughout the history of music. Since Medieval times, numerous compos-ers have used the popular French song “L’homme armé” (“The Armed Man”) as the foundation for settings of the mass. We’ll perform a few of these in candle-lit concerts along with “Funeral Ikos” by Sir John Tavener and other modern chant influenced selections by Arvo Pärt, Sven-David Sandström, and more.
