thank you for the role you’ve played in making the first year at the Center for the Performing Arts one of the most remarkable concert seasons in recent memory, anywhere in the United states.

no other city in America opened a concert hall in 2011 that rivals the Palladium for sheer artistic beauty, comfort, intimacy and functionality. the reviews have been rave from performers and audiences alike.

whether you purchased a box for the season or a single ticket to a single show, whether you are a patron or employee, whether you live in Carmel, indianapolis or elsewhere in indiana, our first season is dedicated to you. without your constant presence, your patience, your collaborative spirit and the unwavering support you provided, our extraordinarily successful first year would not have been possible.

the momentum continues with our current season. All combined, at the halfway point in the 2011-12 season, the Center has attracted 78,000 ticket-buyers – and sales continue on through the season. Certainly it is the concerts and theatrics that attract the spotlight, but the Center’s reach extends into areas that may not be as visible. we are taking a leading role in education and outreach. since August, the Center has provided educational events and outreach to 11,000 people.

likewise, we have many wonderful opportunities to assist businesses in their marketing and branding. our sponsorships at the Center have been especially popular. we have over 50 companies – large and small – involved. it’s an opportunity some of you may wish to consider, especially if you are interested in connecting your business with the thousands of visitors that attend events at the Center each month.

together, as a community, we have accomplished a great deal!

A weeklong grand opening celebration at the Palladium showcased the musical talents of indiana artists alongside a star-studded gala concert. Approximately 15,000 guests attended the spectacular opening festivities. it was standing room only!

RiBBon cutting And Building dedicAtion ceRemony it was a community affair as former Center for the Performing Arts Ceo/President steven B. libman oversaw the ceremonial ribbon cutting. Joining him on stage were Artistic Director Michael feinstein, Board Chairman rollin Dick, Carmel Mayor James Brainard, Architect David schwarz, Chris Darland from Artec, and other project stakeholders.

tAke centeR stAge Back-to-back musical performances made “take Center stage at the Palladium” an afternoon to remember. sponsors for the event included Vectren and Dodd technologies, inc.

open House Giving guests the opportunity to savor the concert hall’s exquisite acoustics, the Palladium’s open house performances included members of the Gregory hancock Dance theater, the new world Youth orchestra, Cso string Quartet, iU Jacobs school of Music, Purdue Varsity Glee Club and more. the event was sponsored by wells fargo Advisors.

opening nigHt gAlA the setting couldn’t have been more elegant for the gala concert and dinner. Artistic Director Michael feinstein introduced a glittering cast of star performers, ranging from red-hot jazz artist Chris Botti, to legendary vocalists neil sedaka and Dionne warwick. Cheyenne Jackson joined feinstein in hosting the event, which also included performances by the Carmel symphony orchestra and the indianapolis Children’s Choir.

the studio theater celebrated its grand opening in early 2011 with several events that were designed to shine a spotlight on local talent while introducing audiences to the theater’s impressive versatility. in the coming years, the studio will feature cabaret, dance, comedy and music from all genres and more!

community dAy the studio theater opened its doors with an exciting afternoon filled with back-to-back performances by a handpicked mix of local musicians. Performers were selected from auditions held on December 28, 2010.

emeRging ARtist sHowcAse A reception for the Center’s resident companies, board members and sponsors followed a delightful performance that featured nashville-based country artist Joanna smith.

studio ARtsfest this special artist showcase featured Central indiana Dance ensemble, indy Youth Klez, Actors theatre of indiana, Jacob Ayers, Janese truver, steven Quinn and the talented and entertaining Carmel repertory theatre.

RiBBon-cutting the ribbon-cutting ceremony included a performance by the human slinky, a performance artist whose quirky genius has earned it appearances on “David letterman,” “the View” and “America’s Got talent.”

reD CarPeT CeleBraTiOn marks TarkinGTOn OPeninGjuly 30 - auGusT 6, 2011

the tarkington is a proscenium-style theater with 500 seats. it also includes a fly-space capable of handling large, elaborate sets. this one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art facility promises to change the theater landscape in Central indiana for years to come.

tHeAteR tuning the tarkington opened in July with a month-long celebration that featured six preview performances.

kids dAy families flocked to the tarkington on July 30 for Kids Day, which included seven different performances on the tarkington stage for kids, by kids.

RiBBon cutting & open House A special ribbon Cutting Ceremony kicked off the open house festivities on July 31 and was followed by live entertainment on stage throughout the day.

opening nigHt the opening night concert featured Artistic Director Michael feinstein performing alongside tony Award-winning Broadway and television star David hyde Pierce. 2009 feinstein initiative Vocal Competition winner Julia Bonnett and principal dancers from American Ballet theatre enjoyed memorable cameo appearances.

a neW hOme FOr The GreaT ameriCan sOnGBOOk anD iTs missiOn

the mission of the Michael feinstein Great American songbook initiative is to share the unique music of the Great American songbook with new audiences and preserve its legacy for generations to come. Michael feinstein and his organization are committed to keeping this inimitable music alive through education, performance, and broadcast, and to preserving the physical artifacts from the genre, including scores, sheet music, recordings, memorabilia and more.

in May of 2011, the Board of Directors at the Center for the Performing Arts voted to approve an affiliation agreement with the Michael feinstein Great American songbook initiative. the board cited a shared vision and a desire to maximize resources as the deciding factor to create a partnership between the two non-profit 501(c)3 organizations. the feinstein initiative showcases its gallery, archive and offices in the Palladium.

CenTer GrOsses $1.67 milliOn in iTs inauGural seasOn

the Center for the Performing Arts closed out its 2010-11 season on June 22 with a sold-out concert featuring country music crooner k.d. lang. with all box office sales officially tallied, the inaugural season presented by st.Vincent health grossed $1.67 million.

neW seasOn launChes WiTh surGe in suBsCriPTiOn sales

heading into the 2011-12 season, which kicked off on August 23 with an appearance by the one-and-only tony Bennett, the Center’s subscription campaign is off to a strong start. subscriptions went on sale May 9 and are attracting renewals and new subscribers alike. the 81-concert season includes performances in all three of the Center’s venues: the Palladium, the tarkington and the studio theater. single tickets for all performances went on sale August 8.

PallaDium earns naTiOnal PlauDiTs WiTh PBs sPeCial

A nationally televised PBs concert, “Michael feinstein: the sinatra legacy,” was filmed live on location at the Palladium on May 12. this unique broadcast event featured the music of frank sinatra and was shown on PBs member stations around the country, including wfYi in central indiana, in August, as part of the network’s pledge-drive programming.

The CenTer FOr The PerFOrminG arTs -- Where arT anD eDuCaTiOn meeT

the Center for the Performing Arts’ work in the community launched in late november 2010. within just a few months, the Center began bringing in students from around the region for Palladium performances and events. Guest artists, like take 6’s Claude McKnight and Miles Davis protégé wallace roney, had meaningful encounters with young musicians, oftentimes including classroom appearances or even side-by-side perfor-mances! one such encounter, on April 30, brought Carmel high school student Jacob hook to the Palladium stage to perform with the legendary Marcus Miller!

the Center’s inaugural season has offered significant relationship-building opportunities and created a firm foundation to grow and expand the Center’s reach into the community. Building on feedback from our Classics in Context pre-concert lectures, we will continue to develop engaging adult-learning experiences around other Center Presents programming in the coming year.

in addition, the Center partnered with several schools and universities during its inaugural year to present educational programming (e.g. Carmel Clay schools, indianapolis Public schools, washington township, Butler University, Ball state University, and iUPUi, among others.)
