President’s Message                                         Joel Silverman

B’nai Israel celebrated three special occasions in recent weeks. First, the annual Purim Carnival, then a Purim service unique to our Congregation, followed by a Religious School Shabbat Service in honor of our children Pre-K to third grade. All three events were well attended by children and adults alike and were enjoyed by all. My thoughts, particularly during and following the Purim Service, were about those children who were not in attendance that Friday evening. My concern was about those kids whose parents (or grandparents) didn’t have the time, or didn’t take the time, to bring their children to one of the premier occasions of our Temple year. Beyond the functions and services B’nai Israel offers and provides to the adult members of our Congregation, what could be more important than introducing our children to Judaism? Without them, where will our next generation of Temple members come from? We address that issue with a very fine and well attended Religious School, but it seems that our youngsters’ involvement should go beyond that. Please consider making services at B’nai Israel part of your family’s routine. You may find that the routine is meaningful to you as well. Rabbi and Cantor hold services once a month specially geared to pre-school age families and school-age children as well. Older children are always welcome at our weekly adult services. (See details on page 2 of this bulletin.) But they can’t get to Temple by

themselves and need you to fit B’nai Israel into their and your busy schedules. Kids can’t be active members of the B’nai Israel community without your help. On a related note, as one of our Temple members arranged to enroll her son in a URJ summer camp, (see below) she discovered that non-need based partial scholarships are available to first time attendees at these camps. For additional information on scholarships, go to www.onehappycamper.org. For help in completing the application, feel free to give me a call. From time to time we hear from members interested in attending religious services on Saturday in addition to or instead of Friday evenings. Please be aware that every Bar/Bat Mitzvah service on the Temple calendar, (usually at 10:00 A.M. and sometimes in the afternoon as well,) is a traditional Shabbat service and is open to the entire community. And each is a very special occasion celebrating the Bar or Bat Mitzvah of a Temple child. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend any or all of these services. If, in addition, you have interest in attending Shabbat services on “unscheduled” Saturdays, please bring this to the attention of Rabbi Moss or me. Have a wonderful Passover. Shalom, Joel

We get Letters! From the desk of Rabbi Howard I Needleman to Rabbi Moss: I hope your congregation enjoys the new siddur. As of now we are unable to make the transition to it, but are overjoyed to receive the Gates of Prayer from your synagogue. Thank you and your temple for donating them to us. Dear Rabbi Moss and the congregation of B'nai Israel, I am stationed in Baghdad, Iraq, and I received a Purim package from your temple. Thank you so much for thinking of me and other Jewish soldiers during this time of the year. We really enjoyed all the goodies in the packages and it was a wonderful feeling to know we are cared for around the world. We all appreciated your kind words and messages from you and your congregation. Many thanks to all for your time, preparation, and good thoughts. I'll personally remember this Purim in Iraq as a special time in my life. V/R, Lisa Craven, Lt Col, USAFR Lead Staff Officer DCMA HQ Iraq To Congregants of the Temple, On behalf of the Jewish service personnel and civilians here in Baghdad and the surrounding bases, we can't thank you enough for the enormous amount of Purim goodies you sent us. Sisterhood Book Swap! Tuesday, May 18, 2010 8:00 pm

The Book Swap is Open to All!

Here’s how it works... Bring any number of gently handled books to the Temple anytime after April 1 including the evening of the Book Swap (attach a note with your name and number of books you have contributed). You will receive a “receipt” for the number of books that you contribute. Come to the Temple on May 18, bring your “receipt” and choose that number of books to take home! (For example: Bring in three cookbooks…take home a mystery, a biography and a Dr. Seuss! etc.)

The more books you contribute, the more books you can take home! The more books you contribute, the greater variety that will be available to swap!

Our Special Guest Speaker is Ms. Pat S. Hogeboom, local author of the historical fiction book, “Idle Hours: The Grace and the Glory”. Ms. Hogeboom will be selling her book for a discounted price of $10.00 and she will be available to sign your purchased copy!

All “leftover” books will be donated to organizations/facilities whose members will enjoy them.

Thanks and we look forward to swapping with you! Please call the Temple with any questions.

Donations  We Need Your Help! Your Temple’s income from dues has fallen during the past year, leaving B’nai Israel more dependent on donations than ever. Please consider making a donation at this time. While your donation may be made to honor a special person, remember that it also helps to provide good works for a larger community.

Donations of $1000 or larger will be commemorated on an attractive new arrangement of plaques to be placed in the Temple lobby. Large donations may also be made in installments.

How to Donate: You can bring or mail a check identifying the intended fund to the Temple. You can also arrange to provide larger donations in installments. Please contact the Temple office if you have any questions. (631) 563-1660 or email [email protected]

My Own Endowment Fund?  The Temple welcomes larger donations that establish endowment funds in accordance with donor wishes. An endowment provides the Temple with long-term benefits that you specify. Endowments are publicized and often grow by attracting additional donations from others. You may name your endowment fund in honor or in memory of someone special. Please call the Temple Office at 563-1660 for further information.

Sustaining the Temple

The General Fund supports the Temple’s day-to-day operations. This fund helps the Temple meet its most immediate needs.

The Building Fund enables capital improvements such as renovations and new construction. The Temple will publish a brochure that describes desirable improvements.

The Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund adds to an account that the Rabbi uses for educational, charitable, and other expenses of his choosing.

Adding Natural Beauty

The Landscaping Fund helps maintain and improve the appearance of the Temple’s grounds.

Flower Arrangement donations help provide the lovely floral displays we see at High Holy Days and other times.

 Involving Our Youth

The Youth Group Fund supports young people’s activities such as social events, educational programs, and day trips.

Honoring Memory  You can establish a memorial fund to perpetuate the memory of a loved one. Others often donate to the fund to honor the named person or the person’s family. A memorial fund can be started with a minimum donation of $1000. There are currently three memorial funds.

• The Ian Matarasso Memorial Fund

• The Ethan William Snair Memorial Fund

• The Sidney Sonkin Memorial Fund

Donations

Remembering Life Events  J o y o u s o c c a s i o n s c a n b e commemorated by an engraved leaf on our Tree of Life in the Temple lobby. A donation for a leaf is $90 for Temple members and $108 for non-Temple members.

Any occasion can be commemorated by an engraved plaque on the Honorial-Memorial Board in the Temple lobby or in the school building, as appropriate. These donations begin at $500.

A memorial plaque in the sanctuary will assure that a loved one’s name will always be mentioned for Kaddish. The donation is $200 for Temple members and $300 for non-Temple members.

A prayer book can be dedicated to commemorate an occasion or to honor someone special. An acknowledgement is placed on the book’s inside front cover. The donation is $36.

Any occasion can be commemorated by an inscribed plaque in an attractive new arrangement of donor plaques of various sizes to be placed in the Temple lobby. These donations begin at $1000.

Promoting the School  The Religious School Fund enhances educational programs and helps defray school operating costs. The Library Fund supports purchase of books, periodicals, and equipment. The Scholarship Fund provides assistance for those unable to pay the entire cost of tuition.

Adding to the Experience  The Fine Arts Fund helps purchase permanent artwork and Judaica, silver and other ritual items for services, decorations for the Temple and the school building, and other aesthetic improvements

Sharing Music

The Music Fund supports choir expenses and the Children’s Choir, and also helps provide special music programs such as the Jazz Shabbat and presentations by visiting performers.

Aiding the Community  The Outreach Program helps provide food and other necessities for those in need. The Help-a-Family Program gives financial aid to Temple members with hardships. You can direct your donation to help a specific family and remain anonymous if you wish. The Shiva Fund sends a platter to a house in mourning. You can direct your donation to help a specific family regardless of Temple affiliation.
