The journey in technology development continues in the 2010-2011 academic year and we hope that this semi-annual campus technology report keeps you informed on what’s been happening and what is planned for the future. We are optimistic about the progress of the Jenzabar student information system. Jenzabar has repaired many of their software’s shortcomings in their finance module. We are currently working to tighten up our institutional data inside the new system to provide more reliable and comprehensive services to our students. Thank you for your patience with us and our departmental partners since this has been a very dicult process. Our move to Moodle from Blackboard for online instruction will conclude at the end of this 2010-2011 academic year. We have received great feedback on the Moodle training workshops that were conducted last spring. We will be continuing these workshops in the fall as well as some specialized workshops for faculty by faculty. These experiential “show and tell” sessions will discuss best practices, new ideas and new tools. More information to come on dates and times for fall Moodle workshops. The next leg of our journey will be the implementation of a V oice O ver I nternet P rotocol (VoIP) telephone system. We had planned this project for the summer but the Federal funding that was made available to us was delayed. We are now planning to begin this project this in fall (2010). We plan to place new phones into oces during the fall 2010 semester. More information on this project will be communicated to the campus community shortly. We are excited about this year and about working with each of you. We have many projects planned and we will be outlining some of these plans in this report. Steps in the journeyA message !om the Vice Chance"or for Information Technology and CIO

Someone once said that “Life is a journey, not a destination.” On our “journey” over the past few years, UVa-Wise has seen a host of changes in buildings, academics, events, as well as technology. Thank you for your patience with us and our departmental partners since this has been a very difficult process. Our move to Moodle from Blackboard for online instruction will conclude at the end of this 2010-2011 academic year. We have received great feedback on the Moodle training workshops that were conducted last spring. These experiential “show and tell” sessions will discuss best practices, new ideas and new tools. More information to come on dates and times for fall Moodle workshops. video. Then, just copy and paste the video link into your Moodle course! It is very easy.

Additionally, Dimdim gives our campus a new web conferencing solution for online meetings. Dimdim allows you to present your Powerpoint slides as well as share your screen and use an online whiteboard. If you have a webcam and microphone, your conference attendees will be able to see you and you can see them if they have a web cam/microphone too.

Dimdim is compatible with most all Windows and Mac computers, although, to record your presentation sessions, you will need to use one of the College’s licensed DimDim Pro accounts. Contact [email protected] to get access to one of the College’s Pro accounts.

To try Dimdim, free accounts are available from www.dimdim.com. Training will be available during Fall term so watch your email!

TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT CALLS INCREASE IN 2009-2010 ACADEMIC YEAR

WHAT is DIMDIM??? In their own words, Dimdim lets anyone host and attend online meetings, demos and webinars using just a web browser. Save money, time and travel by instantly sharing documents, web pages, whiteboards, audio, video – even record your events - with no software to install.

One interesting use for Dimdim that we have found is in the creation of online course video and audio. Dimdim will allow users to create Flash video of your Powerpoint slides with voice annotation.

Moodle users will be able to login to Dimdim, upload their Powerpoint presentation and record them with voiceover audio. Then, Dimdim sends you the links to your Flash

BLACKBOARD LICENSING WILL BE DISCONTINUED AT THE END OF SPRING 2011 SEMESTER

Please remember that our Blackboard licensing will be discontinued at the end of the Spring, 2011 semester. Please watch your email for information on Moodle workshops over this academic year! If you need assistance, please email [email protected].

UVA-WISE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ADOPTS DIMDIM FOR WEB CONFERENCING

The 2009-2010 saw a marked increase in support calls in the Office of Information Technology. Calls increased from 2,730 support requests in 2008-2009 to 4,448 support requests in 2009-2010.

The increase can be attributed to the introduction of our new student information system, further implementation of our Microsoft PC management support systems and support and installation issues connected with the occupation of new College facilities.

If you have a need for technology support, please contact the UVa-Wise HelpDesk at [email protected] or x4509.

NEW POLICIES WITH ELECTRONIC MAIL AT UVA-WISEAs you may know, UVa-Wise has adopted some

relatively new policies regarding electronic mail that have been put in place over the past two years. These new policies have been put in place to insure your privacy and the efficient delivery of electronic mail to your intended audience.

Please remember these big 3 rules when using College electronic mail:

Always use your @uvawise.edu email account for all College-related messages (policy)All email moved into the “deleted items” folder will be permanently deleted after 30 days. (policy)Do not send confidential messages over email. Think of all email sent over the Internet as a postcard.

Home access to email is normally done through the Microsoft Exchange web mail website at https://webmail.uvawise.edu/ . For students who wish to use

Microsoft Outlook and Entourage or other compatible email client, please go online and see http://www.uvawise.edu/oit/TechnologySupport/Tutorials and download the “Setting up Outlook” tutorial for settings.

Also, the Office of Information Technology is now offering a new self-service system for lost or forgotten passwords. Sign up for this service at http://www.uvawise.edu/SMOP and never be caught without your password again!

Many new projects are scheduled for the 2010-2011 academic year! Here are just a few that may affect you!

A major upgrade to the campus Windows Domain Services, DNS and DHCP (tech talk for those who care) will aid us in the management and service of our campus users and help to insure smooth computing for our users.

A new dedicated Moodle Learning Management System will be installed to prepare the way for our complete migration to Moodle (from Blackboard) this year. The new

server will feature faster access, more server storage and a planned integration with our Jenzabar student information system.

Installation of new wireless access in the new Dining Commons and coffee shop facility is planned for early fall. Students, faculty, staff and visitors will be able to bring their wireless devices and use the campus network and Internet for study, research and communication. Look for the wireless access signs in the new facilities during the fall semester.

Lastly, but certainly not least, our new VoIP telephone system is

planned for implementation over the fall semester. Additionally, we plan to automate the new system’s departmental telephone billing with our administrative system.

If you have questions about the projects that are listed here or other questions regarding the Office of Information Technology, please visit our new web site at www.uvawise.edu/oit. Our new site has comprehensive information about the department and resource information on the host of services we offer.

NEW COLLEGE WEBSITE IS NOW LIVEUVa-Wise just moved to a new website system and design! The new web site was developed in partnership with the Office of College Relations. The new system is more interactive, easier to navigate and easier to edit! Check the new site out at www.uvawise.edu today!
