Lucio and I really enjoyed the atmosphere! The fans have been very warm with me and the Team supporters have been very frien-dly. I’d like to thank them for their support during the last season and hope to share positive results with them in the future”.
Cecchinello: “EICMA is one of the most important event for those who work in the two wheels market and it is also a unique event for the fans because they can meet their favourites. Randy has been very frien-dly and nice with everybody and I am pretty sure we will be coming next year too thanks to the warmth and the hospitality of our supporters”.

Amongst the visitors even the LCR Team Manager Lucio Cecchinello who was there last Saturday to meet the fans and to take pictures aboard Randy de Puniet’s Honda RC212V. Unfortunately the Frenchman is still recovering from the last operation of the left ankle and was not able to attend the exhibition.
Lucio Cecchinello: “I have been visiting the Motor Show exhibition from many years and although the 2009 edition has been shorter than the past ones, the public was very warm and this is very positive! People, especially the young, like the motor field and they have got a huge passion for 2 wheels and 4 wheels sports. It is a pity that Randy could not join us this year but he is still re-covering from the last operation and he is proceeding with his rehabilitation program-me. The Doctor Glass staff have managed the event in the best way once again and we are happy to work with them in this spe-cial and renowned occasion”.

Please give us your point of view on 2009 season.

Christophe Bourguignon has been involved in the racing field since 1989 when he star-ted his career like a motocross mechanic passing through different roles and riders till the first cooperation with De Puniet on 2006 at the time of his debut in the pre-mier class. Following De Puniet’s third next season in MotoGP class with LCR Team, we deepen the French rider’s performances and potential thanks to his Chief Engineer’s

from 2009 and remember our mistakes to avoid them in 2010. We made some good progress compare to 2008; Randy had lot more confidence on the front (probably mainly due to the change of the tyres) and his racing approach was better. The start was much better and for most of the sea-son we have been in our top 10 target. Un-fortunately his ankle injury shadowed a lot his final ranking. Technically, after a difficult winter tests start, we had a relatively good performance. The adaptation and the lack of experience with the Bridgestone rubber cost us some points as we did not make the best tyre choice at every race. Then our bike set up, together with Randy riding style, was maybe too aggressive with the rear tyre and the bike seemed to perform really good at beginning of the race but the rear tyre performance seemed to drop qui-cker than others competitors at the end of the race. Valencia was the perfect exam-ple. But overall, considering the profile of our team and the human resources we had, we have to be satisfied of Randy’s 2009 results and we should look to 2010 with a positive attitude”.
What about the 2010 season?
Bourguignon: “For 2010 we had the confir-mation from HRC that we will have a factory type spec. motorcycle. Thus all motorcycles should have almost equal performances. Also the fact that all Honda machines will use the Öhlins suspension should help us to accelerate our development and our set up.
(On 2009 Randy was the only Honda rider equipped with Öhlins). One year of experien-ce on Bridgestone should improve our tyres selection during the race week end. We will keep all our LCR technical staff to perform properly from the beginning of the season. It will be the 5th season for Randy in Moto-GP class (the 3rd with LCR Honda) and he should be back to his top physical perfor-mance after the last successful operation of his left ankle. I honestly think we should have a good overall package”.
Your expectation for the incoming season.
Bourguignon: “It is really hard to issue a final target for 2010 without knowing the exact performance of our bike and the po-tential of our competitors. But, on the pa-per and with the experience of the whole team, we should target a top 10 finish at every race and we could imagine to battle in the top 6 on specific situation or GP. I am confident that if we would give Randy a good feeling on the bike, he could easily race in the top group”.
bikes in preparation for the forthcoming se-ason. Randy, who will turn 29 on the 14th of February, is eager to get on the new bike as his team were recently at Honda Racing’s workshop in Tokyo to work on the 2010 version of the RC212V.
You will turn 29 in two weeks time: any special present for your bday?
Randy: “Well… I am very excited to test the new bike. That’s a very special present
After a long winter break started last No-vember at the end of Comunitat Valenciana GP and after the last successful operation of the left ankle in December, the LCR Hon-da MotoGP racer Randy De Puniet is ready to return to action for the first test ses-sion at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia next week.

for me. My team was in Japan last week to work on the new RC212V and I spoke with my crew chief. He told me that it will be clo-ser to the factory prototype so I can’t wait to ride it. Then, between the two Malaysian test sessions, I will join one friend in Au-stralia with my girlfriend. We will celebrate my birthday there”.
This year is your 12th year in the Moto-GP field. What’s your feeling?
Randy: “It’s a long career but I still feel very young! I rode my first world GP in 1998 and the year after I began my career in the Mo-toGP championship. Honestly the first year season was not easy but I always knew that my father was behind me. He passed me the passion for this sport as he was a ra-cer too. Sometimes I feel surprised about the time I have spent on the bike all around the world but I hope to stay in MotoGP for
a long time...”
What’s your TO DO list for Sepang test session?
Randy: “Some of my colleagues already tri-ed the new bikes in Valencia last year and I used the old one. Now it’s my turn to test it and I am really curious. We have much to do as the testing days have been reduced so we will work hard to find the right set-ting quickly. Then we are going to proceed with a race simulation and some flying laps to check my average speed”.
Have you been training hard in the winter time?
Randy: “I have done some good training af-ter the Christmas holidays to resume from the ankle injury. My personal trainer Yves Demaria was always with me. Jules Cluzel (Moto2 rider) came to train with me and we did cycling, motorcycling, running, and many other things for between three and four hours per day, five days per week and over a three-week period. It was good for both of us”.

On Thursday the Malaysian track opened for testing at 09.00 and continued through a warm humid day until rain showers fell at 16.30 ending the session 30 minutes early. Today’s air temperature reached 31°C but once again the typical tropical rain affected the last day of testing since early morning.

The first official MotoGP Test of the year started yesterday in Malaysia with the 17 riders involved in the development of the new 2010 prototypes. Following a two month winter layoff the MotoGP World Cham-pionship riders returned to action at the 5.548km Sepang circuit for the two days of testing putting their new bikes through their paces with Rossi on the top of the ti-mesheets with a best lap time of 2’00.925.

and got back on track in preparation for the forthcoming season. The Frenchman com-pleted 62 laps on Thursday working with his technicians to improve the chassis and the suspension settings of his Honda machine-ry. He was on a long run when the rain came but today’s he has been back to his set up work (48 laps) trying several adjustments to make a step up in his machine perfor-mance. De Puniet posted his best lap time of 2’03.043 riding his Honda to the 13th position and will return to the Malaysian track at the end of February for further pre-season testing.
De Puniet: “The first outing on the new bike has been a bit tough for us. The bike looks good but after few laps I felt that the fee-ling was quite nervous. So we have worked a lot on the set up especially on chassis regulations and suspension settings. Af-ter that I could ride with much confidence and we have started a long run gaining a god pace on hard tyres. This morning we have been trying several adjustments... some were good but much work has yet to be done. We rode another long run today (about 17 laps) and, at the end of the day, I went out on soft tyre but the surface tem-perature was not as good as I expected. I know that the 13th position is not brilliant but we did not look for the ultimate laps time. We gathered important data for the next test session to have clear ideas about the direction we have to follow”.

In 2009 the LCR Honda MotoGP racer Randy de Puniet has decided to face up the season with a further support which was named Yves Demaria. Together with his country fellow Randy has begun a very important mental and physical training programme and the pair have travelled to-gether throughout the whole season.
Yves Demaria (born January 22, 1972 in Marseille) has been a very talented moto-cross racer gaining the MX3 World Title
for three times. Demaria won his first MX3 world championship in 2004, following with two more crowns in 2006 and 2007. He has also won several races in the MX1-GP and MX2-GP categories.
Randy: “First of all Yves is a very good friend and I respect him for his incredible career. When I have decided to work with him people thought that it was a stran-ge cooperation. I could have involved a real personal trainer or a former GP rider but I knew that Yves could support me in the

perience for both”.
Please explain us the training programme you chose for Randy.
Yves: “Randy likes sports very much so it has not been difficult to involve him in different activities. We decided to create a base programme which includes cycling and running… then, of course, we practice MX, Enduro and Supermotard”.
As a former MX rider which are the main targets for a rider to be fitted for the competitions. Example: special diet, spe-cial training etc...
Yves: “In my opinion to be at the top level in every sport, you must have a good physi-cal condition and an irreproachable healthy life. Then you have to add a good training, a healthy diet and good sleeps. But the most important thing is that you have to do a lot sacrifices!”
Which are the main differences between a MX rider and a MotoGP rider? Physically speaking.
Yves: “Compared to a MX rider, a Moto-GP rider needs less physical training, it’s sure! For the GPs you have to work on the suppleness and not being too muscular. For the MX competitions you have to be-come physically strong, powerful and you must train a lot on the bike”.
right way. He is thick-skinned like all the MX riders. He could teach me how to improve my concentration and skills on the bike. If we consider that every GP rider usual-ly practice motocross Yves was the right choice for me! Together we have planned a regular training programme which includes aerobic and anaerobic exercises conside-ring the training typologies, their intensity and the powers of recovery. Thanks to the cardio equipment and a regular blood exam session I can easily check my physical form constantly”.
When have you met Randy for the first time and how did you start your collabora-tion with him?
Yves: “Well I met Randy 10 years ago du-ring a Supermoto competition and we im-mediately had a good feeling. After that, we started to do some MX training in the winter time. At the end of 2008 season he asked me a further help to be more compe-titive and more concentrated at the races and I thought it could be an interesting ex-

The premier class teams and riders retur-ned to Malaysia for the second MotoGP winter test at the 5.548km Sepang cir-cuit, after a three-week break. The 16 of-ficial riders were greeted by warm humid weather conditions and a good, clean track surface, conditions that allowed for opti-mum rider performances and fast lap ti-mes. Two days of testing at the Malaysian circuit concluded today with Rossi on the top of the timesheets with the best time of 2’00.271.
HRC engineers and the LCR Team techni-cians had used the intervening time to fur-ther develop the RCV based upon the data gathered at the first Sepang test. LCR Honda MotoGP Team racer Randy De Pu-niet, who turned 29 some days ago, made the most of the hot, sunny weather at the Malaysian circuit to complete two days of development work with the new RC212V. The Frenchman improved his first test lap time of 1.063s clocking his fastest lap time of 2’01.980 today on lap 4 of 58. De Puniet put in a massive 134 laps of the

De Puniet - 11th: “If we consider the two days in total we made some progress with the suspension set up which was our main issue in the first outing here some weeks ago. Basically we have worked to develop the machine base set up using the data we gathered before and I am pretty sati-sfied about this second test session and about the lap time I have clocked up today.
It could be even better (maybe half second) as, at the end of the day, we have found a better suspension set up to test but we had just used tyres left. We did a race si-mulation and I feel more comfortable on the bike thanks to the step forward we made on the machine balance and on the weight distribution. Of course there is still work to do but I am more confident now ahead the last test session in Qatar”.

We lapped a race simulation (20 turns) and I have posted my best time at the end of it... this is quite positive! I could do better today (probably 4th) but I found Barbera on my line in the last corner. It has been involved for se-veral years in protecting a particular region of the Rain Forest in Brasil, called Atlantic Forest, which has a unique eco system for both plants and animals. First Flora aims to protect from destruction a part named Janaina Reserve, and it’s possible to see details on their website www.firstflora.eu where it is also possible for every single citizen to adopt a single square meter of forest .The specific coordinates of the area are: 14°16’36” S 39°07’41”W.
Edgar Mader, CEO of Energethica circuit, while inviting the Team to his Genova event, stated: ”The message coming out from this Team is very strong because of the con-trast : a MotoGP Team becoming respectful
of the environment. But for this reason it is very powerful : if they can do it, if they can race at zero emissions, there are no more excuses for anybody else”. The LCR Honda Team will finance the important protection program using a part of the seasons bud-get, provided by the partners of the Team.
All these activities, reductions, respect and offsetting, will take part within the Team un-der the title ECOSTYLE project, which aims to give clear guidelines for doing the same job as before but in a better way, leaving a lighter footprint day by day or better, lap after lap !!Please go and visit the LCR Honda Team fa-cebook page and leave a message on this subject.

remember… not buckling up your helmet, is about as clever not wearing one at all!
TYRES
If you do not look after them with the right pressure, sixe ect.. you will end up on the floor… and this is not FUN! Grip is very im-portant if we consider the different surfa-ces. Remember: do not buy second hand tyres!
FUEL AND LUBRIFICANTS
The way you ride effects the amount of fuel you use so take your time and save extra cash! While you ride try to avoid sudden brakes and abrupt starts as this causes stress on the engine and fuel consumption. Remember: check periodically the oil level to get the best engine performance!
SPARK PLUG
Spark plugs work well as long as you take care of them. Depending on how old/strong your engine is, you made to change your plugs often than the others. However this can alter performance drastically by giving you more power and less consumption. Re-member: Iridium spark plugs may be ex-pensive but they go off with a big big bang!
If you follow these small simple steps I gua-rantee you the road will become a safer pla-ce!
Will come back to you all soon with more tips to make you enjoy your bike safely….
Roberts. During this time I worked as chief data recording and engine management en-gineer for Jeremy McWilliams and Kenny Roberts Junior, and was fortunate enough to work with some of the very best engi-neers. After KR withdrew from racing, I spent a year with the Kawasaki test team, and began working for LCR in 2009. My re-sponsibility within the team is for anything electrical, beginning with the setup of the pit garage and network. As far as the bikes
What’s your role inside the LCR Team and how did you learn this job? (past experien-ces, past teams and riders etc...)
Brian Harden: “I graduated from Auc-kland University with Honours in Mechani-cal Engineering and entered the MotoGP field in 1999. At the end of this project I made some important contacts with the 2D company (who we still use today), and spent the next 6 years working for Kenny

are concerned, I am responsible for all of the electrical systems on the bike, and the setup and maintenance of them. One of my most important roles during a test or GP is the modification of engine maps based on our discussions within the team, specifical-ly between Rider and Crew Chief, and the data we receive from the bike”.
Please explain us what is the telemetry and why is so important for MotoGP.
Brian Harden: “We have many sensors on the bike which give us information from both the chassis and engine. Combining the riders comments with this data, we aim to make improvements to the bike setup, and improve the riders overall feeling of perfor-mance. Engine management has become an increasingly important factor in achie-ving the best laptimes since the change to 4-strokes, and I believe even more so since the change to 800cc machines. There is less room now for errors, and it is incre-asingly difficult for a rider to recover lost time due to a wheelie for example, or large amounts of spin. Therefore it is our aim to give the rider a machine which has the ma-ximum amount of controllable power which he can use effectively, and provide maximum acceleration, using tools such as traction and wheelie control. Of course equally im-portant is braking performance, and we have different forms of engine brake control to stop the rear wheel locking under brakes, or provide the feel on entry the rider is loo-king for. As well as these adjustments, we must also consider the fuel consumption as we are limited to 21L. The data recording system is essential if we wish to finish the race with the minimum amount of fuel, and use the HRC engine to its full potential”.
Checking the data you gathered every week end can y please describe us Ran-dy’s riding style aboard the RC212V and what he should improve for next season?
Brian Harden: “During the 2009 season we have seen that Randy has a style we as-sociate typically with a 250cc rider, keeping high corner speed. One of the most impor-
tant areas for laptime is the corner exit, and the area where the rider can first open the throttle. The sooner a rider can open the throttle on exit, the better the laptime and also top speed. This will be an area we concentrate on in 2010. Also, during the later part of the season, we did not cope well with the reduction in tyre performance towards the latter half of the race. This will be something we look to improve with bike setup and engine management”.
Lucio Cecchinello – 125cc class former rider: “As a former GP rider I believe the-re are 3 essential parameters to consider checking the telemetry in order to improve the performance on track: the speed, the throttle and the engine revolution. You can easily compare your data lap by lap, ses-sion by session and, if you have got a team mate, you can compare them directly with him. The circuit graphic which appears on the monitor gives you precise instructions about the areas where it’s better to open the throttle earlier or not. Thanks to the telemetry system the Data Recording En-gineer can analyze the performance of the machine but even the riding style of the rider and afterwards he can plan the bike best set up. One of the most important pa-rameter which brings out the rider’s riding style (and consequently the engine set up) is the throttle: several riders use a striking ON/OFF riding style that means or com-pletely open or completely closed (such as Ueda and De Angelis) whilst others have unusual features. Stoner for example was impressively fast opening the throttle be-fore the others whilst Randy is more clever and brave in keeping the throttle open while he is at the maximum angle in the fastest areas of the different circuits...”

order to be on track for the first GP of the season which will take place in Qatar on the 11th of April this year again.
Together with the Team Manager Lucio Cec-chinello we want to deepen one of the tech-nical and imaginative aspects of this job re-lated to De Puniet’s RC212V … or rather the livery creation.
Lucio Cecchinello: “The winter time is a
Every year, before the season’s start, the LCR Team Manager Lucio Cecchinello and his collaborators work diligently to be ready for the season’s kick off and the amount of work related to a racing team is vast. Starting from the renewal of the collabo-rators’ contracts to the infrastructures maintenance, from the new bike set up to the Team Presentation Media Kit and so on… Every single Team department must respect the targets and the time limit in

very tough period for me and the Team colla-borators. Every single department fixes its own targets but the time is short as the Championship starts in April. Amongst the several works we face to prepare the Team we have to consider the graphic aspect which define the Team, the rider and the bi-ke’s image for the incoming season”.
Which procedure do you carry out to “dress up” the bike?
L. Cecchinello: “After having set the con-tracts with our supporters, we usually start working on the bike layout fixing the logos dimensions and positioning together with a main colour which will stand out our bike image amongst the others. In 2006 we have created a special Australian livery for Stoner and that was a very successful fee-dback for us. Recently we have focused our work on the number plate using the fluo co-lour and last year we have prepared a spe-cial layout for the wheels colour. Together with the Graphic Department we study se-veral combinations to make the bike more attractive and more visible on TV”.
Once you have settled the layout, how do you proceed?
L. Cecchinello: “Every year the Manufactu-rers come out with new features including the fairings. With the support of our tech-nicians we measure the complete fairing trying to adapt the layout we have planned before in every single part: the front, the back, both sides and the fuel tank. Once we have completed the graphic rendering with our supporters’ approval, we start with a new work phase tracing the bike with the adhesive tape and afterwards the fairing is ready to be painted“.
Please give us some details about the GP machines fairings.
L. Cecchinello: “The colouring process is long and laborious. First the carbon fairings are handmade treated and then they are painted with special water dyes of diffe-rent colours. After 2 days and many work phases including the drying process, the fairings are ready and we put the stickers on. These carbon fairings are very light (one complete set weigh about 2.2kgs) and for this reason, in case of crash, they are not very strong. But if the damage is not big we can repair them even if this process is very delicate because if you ride a bike at 350km/h you get a lot of vibrations“.
