A Brief History of RSU

RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern UniversityPreparatory School in Claremore. The school preparedthe daughters and sons of area residents to attend col-lege. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic golddome, was the first building on the school's campus.

However, the school closed only a few years after itopened. Taking its place was the storied OklahomaMilitary Academy, which operated on the Hill from 1919to 1971.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” the OMAhas an extensive register of graduates who became greatleaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the UnitedStates during World War II, the Korean War, and theVietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives inservice to their country.

In 1971, the OMA closed and Claremore Junior Collegeopened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. Thejunior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the timeit was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institu-tion boasted a variety of associate degree programs, dis-tance learning capabilities, a new radio and televisionstation, and intercollegiate athletics.

In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institu-tion Rogers State University and charged it with seekingaccreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation atthe baccalaurete level was granted less than two yearslater in 2000.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing univer-sities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree pro-grams to more than 4,200 students on campuses inClaremore, Bartlesville, and Pryor.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)Champions of Character program is designed to instill anunderstanding of character values in sports and provide prac-tical tools for student-athletes, coaches, and parents to use inmodeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Characterprogram addresses character issues more comprehensivelythan any other national program for youth. The program cur-rently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly300 college and university campuses in North America andextends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character develop-ment through athletics for decades. The core values ofrespect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, andsportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in theChampions of Character program.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an education-al outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of characterand integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but foryounger students, coaches, and parents in our communities.

2010 Softball Season Outlook

8

The Rogers State softball program enters the 2010 sea-son with a renewed sense of optimism.

The Hillcats produced their fourth consecutive 30-winseason in 2009 under first-year head coach Mark Dicus, but failed to meet their ultimate goal of reaching theNational Tournament. Now, with a full year to implementhis coaching philosophy and acquire prized recruits,Dicus has the RSU program poised for a return to nation-al prominence.

“I think the biggest difference you'll see from the Hillcatsthis year is we will have a strong offense from top to bot-tom and will be capable of putting up some big numberswith an explosive offense,” Dicus said. “The one thing I'msure of is that we're better at every position than wewere last year. We're better offensively and defensively, and we've got more pitching depth.”

RETURNERSPerhaps the one thing the Hillcats lack entering 2010 is alarge cast of veterans. Juniors Katie Bointy, Marie Gaudet, and Tanya Koch represent the only returners from lastseason. With no seniors on the roster, the trio will becalled upon to provide guidance for a long list of talent-ed newcomers.

“The three returners we have will bring a lot in terms ofleadership and work ethic,” Dicus said. “All three havemade major contributions over the past two years andare some of the hardest workers we have, which is con-tagious and has already rubbed off on the rest of ourteam.”

The returners combined to make 155 starts in 2009 andhave been a staple of the RSU lineup in each of the pasttwo seasons. Bointy and Gaudet solidified the corners ofthe Hillcat infield with Bointy earning SAC Gold Glovehonors last season at third base. Dicus labeled Gaudet as“the most athletic player I've ever coached.” Koch hashandled the Cats' stellar pitching staff as RSU's primarycatcher in each of the past two years. She threw out 13of 21 would-be base stealers in 2009 and upped her bat-ting average by nearly 100 points from her freshman season.

The veterans combined for 15 home runs and 60 RBI lastseason and are expected to provide bigger numbers in2010.

NEWCOMERSDicus's highly-touted recruiting class comprises sevenfreshmen and eight juniors, many of whom will be calledupon to make an immediate impact for the Hillcats. Thelist of newcomers includes a junior college All-American,two Division I transfers, and a host of all-state honorees.

“As a whole, the newcomers have already improved ourclub dramatically on offense,” Dicus said. “Another hugeupgrade we've had is in our team defense. This team hasthe same passion to play hard that last year's team had, they're just more talented.”

Dicus noted freshman shortstop Ashlie Fauchier and jun-ior centerfielder Brittany White as potential Gold Glovecandidates. “Ashley learns very quickly and has filled aposition in the middle infield that is very critical for uswhile Brittany was just a human highlight reel in the out-field this fall.”

Connors State College product Sarah Harvey andCollinsville freshman Lindsey Curtis should provide plen-ty of pop in the middle of the RSU lineup. Harvey was atwo-time All-American for the Cowgirls and belted 16home runs in 2009. Curtis has been penciled in as theCats' designated hitter after cranking out six homers injust a handful of games during the fall.

The departure of 2009 senior Jenny Johnson left a hugevoid in the RSU pitching staff. However, Dicus hasreplaced one strong arm with two as he netted a pair oftransfers from top four-year programs.

“We lost a great pitcher last year in J.J., but we have twoDivision I transfers coming in to replace her,” Dicusnoted. “Tye Coats, who played at Texas Tech, will lead us.She has incredible power and has been clocked between63 and 66 miles per hour with good movement on herpitches. To complement her, we signed Taryn Hernandez,a left hander who started for two years at Bethune-Cookman. She's a fierce competitor who isn't afraid ofanybody.”

2010 Softball Season Outlook

SCHEDULEA myriad of home games highlight the 2010 RSU softballschedule. After playing just six home dates last spring, the Hillcats have 24 regular season games and a two-daytournament scheduled for the Hillcat Complex in 2010.The inaugural Border War Tournament will feature eightteams from Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas April9 and 10.

The Sooner Athletic Conference has also adopted a newscheduling format with each team playing a home-and-home series with every school in the league. RSU willhost nine SAC doubleheaders, including dates with 2009National Tournament participants Lubbock Christian(March 24), Oklahoma City (April 1), and St. Gregory's(May 1).

The top eight teams will advance to the conference tour-nament May 7 and 8 at Hall of Fame Stadium inOklahoma City.

u The Hillcats have set their focus on Decatur, Alabama, and the National Tournament in 2010.

EXPECTATIONSThe RSU softball program has accomplished a lot in itsbrief existence on the Hill. In just four short years, theHillcats have established a winning tradition, earned aTop 10 national ranking, and notched a number ofnotable wins over nationally ranked programs. However, one primary goal has eluded the Cats thus far. As theytake the diamond this spring, the Hillcats have only onedestination in mind.

“We always set our focus on Decatur, Alabama, and theNational Tournament,” Dicus stated. “That's our goal andI think this year, more than ever, it's obtainable. We wantto get to the National Tournament with a chance to winthe last game of the season.”

The Rogers State softball team endured a number of peaksand valleys throughout the 2009 season. Under the directionof first-year head coach Mark Dicus, the Hillcats achievedtheir third consecutive 30-win season and placed fifth in theprestigious Sooner Athletic Conference.

“I really enjoyed the season because of the group we had,”Dicus said. “They fought and worked hard and we found outa lot about the Sooner Athletic Conference. I knew it wastough coming in, I just didn't realize how tough it was fromtop to bottom.”

RSU began the season on a hot streak, reeling off seven con-secutive victories before suffering its first loss to defendingNational Champion Lubbock Christian. From there, the ebband flow of the season began to settle in. The Cats postedfour winning streaks of at least three games, but also lostthree straight games on three different occasions.

Hillcat Softball 2009 Season in Review

“The one thing I can say is that this team battled and playedhard every day, so as a coach that's all you can ask for,” Dicusnoted. “Our girls answered the bell every day. I think at timeswe got a little worn down and we took on virtually the entireseason with one pitcher.”

A strong core of senior leadership shouldered the load forthe Hillcats for much of the year. Megan Wood, Lilly Nevarez,Jenny Johnson, and Natalie Smith each produced incredibleresults in their final spring on the Hill. The foursome postedthe top four batting averages on the squad while rewritingthe RSU record books.

Wood set a new single-season record for hits (63) whileNevarez scored a record number of runs (53). Smith set asingle-game record for total bases (10) and also became justthe third Hillcat player to hit two home runs in one game.Johnson wreaked havoc with both her arm and her bat, set-ting single-season records for wins (29), innings pitched(315.2), home runs (14), and RBI (56) among others.

Johnson also became the first RSU player to earn all-confer-ence accolades in back-to-back seasons. She was named tothe first team while Wood and Nevarez earned second-teamrecognition. Sophomore third baseman Katie Bointy waschosen for the SAC Gold Glove team.

RSU made history with an unbelievable display of power atthe Hillcat Complex on March 6. The Cats became the firstteam in NAIA history to hit back-to-back-to-back-to-backhome runs when they accomplished the feat in a 10-1 dis-mantling of Northwestern Oklahoma State. Johnson startedthe parade with a three-run homer and Allison Bean, MarieGaudet, and Bointy followed suit with solo shots.

Dicus also guided RSU to its first ever win over national soft-ball power Oklahoma City University. The Hillcats came frombehind on the road with two runs in the sixth inning to posta 3-2 victory over the second-ranked Stars on April 2.

RSU closed the regular season by winning three of its finalfour games and crushed Oklahoma Christian, 6-0, in theopening round of the SAC Tournament. However, losses toOklahoma Baptist and Northwestern Oklahoma State elimi-nated the Hillcats from the postseason tournament andeffectively closed the books on the 2009 season.

“Overall, I was very proud of our kids and the way they com-peted,” Dicus said. “Our seniors had a fantastic year, whichwas great to see, and I think we learned a lot about what ittakes to win in the SAC on a more consistent basis.”

Three sophomore starters from the 2009 campaign are slat-ed to return for the 2010 season. Their experience, alongwith a host of highly touted recruits, have the Hillcats settingtheir sights squarely on Decatur, Ala., and the NAIA NationalSoftball Tournament in the years ahead.

These are exciting times on “The Hill” in Claremore. RSU isexperiencing unparalleled growth as one of Oklahoma'sfastest-growing universities while our emerging athleticprograms have enjoyed unprecedented success since theirinception in 2006. RSU's rapid development brings with ita new level of expectations and a number of needs forimprovement and expansion. We believe that now is theoptimal time to begin a lasting partnership with RSU andHillcat Athletics.

Providing our student-athletes with elite-level playing andtraining facilities is among our highest priorities during thiscrucial stage in our development. Completion of our newbaseball and softball complex is at the top of our list. RSUis currently seeking donations and sponsorship opportuni-ties for the facility with a fundraising goal of $500,000.These contributions will allow us to complete the third andfinal phase of construction at the complex, which willinclude additional grandstands, public restrooms, conces-sions, coaches' offices, a meeting room, central courtyardand much more. The completed facility will serve as theregion's premiere multi-purpose athletic facility and affordRSU the opportunity to host multiple high-profile regionaland national sporting events each year.

Construction could start as early as Summer 2010. Formore information on this project call the RSU athleticoffice at (918) 343-7782.
