PUNTA GORDA — With a regional Sunfish regatta set for this fall, the second an-nual Charlotte Harbor Re-gatta set for next winter, and a disabled sailing associa-tion’s world championship regatta set for January 2012. it’s beginning to look a lot like community-sailing advocate Dennis Peck’s dreams are finally coming true.

But the materialization of the dream still has a way to go, said

Peck, the director of the Char-lotte Harbor Community Sail-ing Center.

He said he’s trying to find a public basin in the city or Charlotte County that could be equipped with floating docks wide enough for wheelchairs, a hoist or two for both boats and people, and some land to store boats. That’s what’s needed to fulfill his dream of creating a sailing center for both able-bodied and disabled sailors.

Regatta puts Charlotte Harbor on the map

Heralds & Let’s Go!

TWO short years ago Brian Gleason decided to shine the light on beautiful, peaceful and wide open harbor of Charlotte. From Massachusetts, lover of the great out-doors, and a guy with a sailing passion it was a perfect fit for him. He did a great job and the world noticed. Gleason has really shined the light on us.

— Jamie Larsen

Brian decided what he wanted to do and just charged in. He rallied local sail-ors, far and away yacht clubs, local business people and before you knew it, viola, the Regatta was born.’

’Peck said Saturday. “It would put Punta Gorda on the map.”

Peck said he developed the vision around 2002, after he first saw a Martin 16 sailboat rigged to allow a paralyzed person to sail it at a boat show. The boats, which are designed not to capsize, can be equipped with a swivel chair with straps. The chair can glide on a rail across the cockpit to allow the sailor to switch sides.

For those who have use of their arms, the boats have cus-tom tillers for steering.

For those with limited arm movements, the boats can be equipped with twin joysticks for steering.

Even for those who are quad-riplegic, devices are available to allow the boats to be controlled with a “sip-and-blow” mouth-piece.

Peck recalled making a pro-posal to the Punta Gorda City

Council years ago to develop the Laishley Park Marina for sailing programs.

“My vision was: The whole ba-sin was a sailing center,” he said. “All sailing centers are near a marina.”
