Background to the Collection> DEEWR Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC)

– Every Higher Education Institution, Every Year

> IGS & RTS funding

– $1.6 million total in 2008 & 2009

> Swinburne Research Bank

– Open access digital collection of research created by Swinburne researchers available to anyone worldwide.

> Excellence in Research for Australia

– Publications data used in three out of six research quality indicators

Eligibility Summary

Each Publication must demonstrate evidence of the following :

> meet the definition of research.

> contain a 2009 publication date or 2008 publication date but not have been published until after 30 June 2009

> have research that was carried out by staff or students of Swinburne University

> have been formally published or offered for sale and available for distribution

> have undergone an acceptable peer review process, if a journal article or conference paper.

HERDC Publications Eligible

> Research Books

– But probably not textbooks; edited books; creative works such as novels;

> Research Book Chapters

– But probably not entries in textbooks; entries in reference books; forewords; translations.

> Refereed Journal Articles

– But probably not articles in newspapers and popular magazines; case studies; letters to the editor; editorials; reviews

> Refereed Conference Publications

– But definitely not abstracts only

> Publication Coordinators– Submit complete verification materials to Swinburne Research Bank– Source and supply publications not yet received by the Bank– Ensure that all items in RB are checked for eligibility– Source Field of Research (FOR) Codes – Ensure the Faculty error rate is less than 5%

Critical Dates for the 2010 Collection of 2009 data

> Continuous submission of publications data from now

> 30 April 2010: Last day to submit to 2009 data to Swinburne Research Bank

> 21 May 2010: Final lists sent to Publications Coordinators for distribution to Faculty/Centre

> 04 June 20109: Deadline for responding to final list

Definition of Research:

> Creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humanity, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications;

> Any activity classified as research which is characterized by originality; it should have investigation as a primary objective and should have the potential to produce results that are sufficiently general for humanity's stock of knowledge (theoretical and/or practical) to be recognizably increased. Most higher education research work would qualify as research;
