Welcome to the 113th year of MichiganIntercollegiate Athletic Association footballcompetition. On behalf of each of ourmember institutions, student-athletes,coaches, faculty and administrators, I hopeyou enjoy today’s game and festivities.

While watching the contest, I wouldalso encourage you to exercise a posit ive spir i t ofsportsmanship toward all game participants and officials. Wein the MIAA are signatories to the NCAA Division IIIsportsmanship initiative - “Be Loud, Be Proud, Be Positive.”All you can do in support of these principles contributes to amore civil, fun-filled and respectful competitive environment;consistent with our league traditions as the nation’s oldestathletic conference.

The 2010 season again promises to be very competitive, with the rekindling of traditional rivalries. We continue to seebalance across our conference and expect the title to be indispute right up until the final games in November.

The MIAA had another outstanding year in 2009-10,featuring individual national champions in track and field and

swimming and diving, seven teams from our memberinstitutions finishing in the top 10 nationally in Division III andmember individual athletes earning All-American honors invirtually all of our 18 sports. Academically, more than 50 of our128 teams were recipients of the conference team GPA awardfor maintaining a cumulative 3.3 average, and more than 880varsity letterwinners earned Honor Roll of Athlete Awards formaintaining at least a 3.5 GPA. Seventy-three letterwinnersreceived recognition for achieving Honor Roll status all fouryears at their institutions. Observing this level of performanceboth “on the field” and “in the classroom” demonstrates theconcept of the student-athlete, a philosophy we in the MIAAvalue and which truly describes our participants.

With this rich educational tradition, commitment to athleticexcellence and our dedication to athletics as part of theeducational mission of each college, the MIAA remains apremier Division III conference in the United States.

David L. NeilsonMIAA Commissioner
