B e t h A c r e m a n became Murray State University’s second head women’s soccer coach April 10, 2006. The advances the program has shown in her four seasons have been a joy to watch as the Racers have been posit ioned to compete for the Ohio

Valley Conference regular-season and tournament championship. In the last two seasons, the Racers have realized the goal of winning each under Coach Acreman.

The Racers have also been picked as the favorite in the OVC Preseason Soccer Poll.

BUILDING A CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAMMSU Soccer is again one of the teams considered a favorite to win the OVC title in 2010. The Racers are coming off their fi rst appearance in the NCAA Tournament last fall when they won the 2009 OVC Tournament, a season after winning the OVC regular-season title in 2008, including a school-record 12 wins.

“The last two seasons have been a lot of fun. We’ve had great groups and they’ve played well,” Acreman said. “I have enjoyed coaching them, because they all take instruction very well and when we’re all going in the same direction, special things can happen and they certainly have the last two seasons with two OVC titles.”

When Acreman arrived at Murray State in 2006, she quickly began setting the foundation for a championship program.

Her fi rst Racer squad made many improvements and fi nished 5-9-4, but in the 2007 season, the team jumped to a different level. Murray State’s 11-8 overall mark and 6-3 record in the OVC set a program record for most wins in a single season and tied the team mark for conference victories. Somis Sports named the Racers as the 11th most improved squad in the nation, and Soccer Buzz tabbed MSU as one of the teams to watch in 2008.

They were right, because in the 2008 season, the Racers exploded to a 12-5-3 record and won their

fi rst OVC regular-season championship when they posted their fi rst undefeated conference season at 4-0. However, the Racers lost a heartbreaking OVC Tournament semifi nal game in a shoot-out to Morehead State.

The pain of that loss only spurred the Racers to greater things as they returned to the 2009 OVC Tournament as the third seed. MSU buzzed through the fi eld and won the title with wins over Eastern Kentucky (1-0), UT Martin (1-0) and Tennessee Tech (4-0), all by shutout. MSU’s 4-0 victory in the title game over TTU is an OVC Tournament record for largest margin of victory.

MSU got a taste of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament when they represented the OVC in a fi rst round game against Virginia Tech. Although MSU lost that game 2-0, the experience they gained is valuable.

“Getting to the NCAA only fuels our championship mindset and that means so much not only when the season starts, but all through the year when we’re training,” Acreman said. “It has been a joy to see our student-athletes improve and see our program get to the level we’re now at.”

Like any championship coach, Acreman knows a team cannot rest on its accomplishments.

“The leadership we’re getting from our team is amazing; I see it every day in the work ethic they have, and when you have players wanting to win as bad as the coach, you can do great things. I am excited to see where this group can take us from here, and hopefully we’ll be able to contend for the OVC Championship again.”

ACHIEVING IN THE CLASSROOMNot only has MSU Soccer achieved great things on the fi eld in the Beth Acreman era, the Racers are also performing at a high level in the classroom.

In her four seasons at MSU, Beth Acreman has produced teams that have ranked among the best in the nation. In the 2007-08 school year, the Racers reached the top when they were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with the best grade point average in the nation among all NCAA D-I schools. MSU’s GPA of 3.61 shared the top spot with Central Michigan University.

MSU Soccer had 13 student-athletes earn Dean’s List honors in the 2009-10 school year and saw Laken

Dirkes, Nicole Evans, Olivia Hemme and Katie Wilson post a perfect 4.0 GPA.

“All our student-athletes have worked hard both on and off the fi eld, because you can’t have one without the other.” Acreman said. “Our academic achievements are just as important and our program takes academics very seriously.”

MSU now has produced 125 student-athletes that have earned MSU Dean’s List honors.

ACREMAN BEFORE MURRAY STATEAcreman’s accomplishments at Murray State are no surprise. She prepared for her fi rst job as a head coach at Middle Tennessee, which proved to be an excellent training ground. During her time in Murfreesboro, Tenn., as an assistant coach, the Blue Raiders compiled a 64-48-7 record, won the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Championship and broke or tied the school record for wins in a season four times. During the same time, the Blue Raiders lost just three Sun Belt Conference matches, going a combined 17-3-5 in league games.

Prior to arriving at Middle Tennessee State, Acreman completed a stint with the UK Elite Soccer Academy in New Jersey and served as the head coach at the American Community School in London.

Acreman holds the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier Diploma, the highest coaching level of the NSCAA. In addition, she holds two NSCAA goalkeeping diplomas. She is also a head coach for the US Olympic Development program and is a course instructor for Kentucky Youth Soccer.

Acreman is a native of Yateley, England and graduated from Barton College (N.C.) with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1999. She was a team captain, three-time CVAC All-Conference performer and an All-South Region selection. She was a two-sport athlete

where she was a three-time all-conference selection in the Sun Belt Conference.

As a freshman in 2003 she was the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year and ended her career at MTSU as one of only four players in program’s history to be named all-conference three straight years. Ward started all 60 games while at the school.

Ward attended Reid Kerr College in Ayr, Scotland and also played for the Scotland Junior National Team for four years.

She earned a degree in physical education from Middle Tennessee in 2006.

Once the home facility for Murray State football, Cutchin Field is now the home fi eld for Murray State soccer.

Located beside the Curris Cen ter and across the street from Rac er Are na, Cutchin Field has un der gone many chang es over the years.

The facility features a 72-by-114-yard Bermuda playing fi eld, a state-of-the-art score-board, and a sprin kler system to keep the fi eld perfect at all times.

Player shelters like those seen at the professional and world cham pi on ship level are in place at both bench es and the scorer’s table.

In 2008, the Racers moved into the brand new Crisp Soccer-Tennis Complex. The new facility adjacent to Cutchin Field features locker rooms, coaches offi ce, and athletic training space.

One of the charming features of Cutchin Field is that it is in the middle of campus and is very accessable to students who attend matches in large numbers. “The Hill” is a great place to watch the Racers play and relax in the warming fall sunshine.

Cutchin Field was the home of Murray State football from 1924 to 1972. The Thor-oughbreds — later to be called the Racers — won 142 football games here including the inaugural OVC championship in 1948.

The fi eld is named for multi-sport coach Carlisle Cutchin, who was Murray State’s second football coach (1925-30), and the fi rst men’s basketball coach (1925-41), and he also coached baseball at MSU (1928-32, 1941, 1946-53). Cutchin had a combined record of 391-208-7 (.651) in 36 sea sons as a head coach in three sports.

He was inducted into the Murray State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1970, the fi rst coach to earn the honor.

Cutchin Field has a long-standing and successful sports history, dating almost to the founding of Murray State itself.

After a 30-year hiatus from varsity sports, its tradition continues as the setting for Racer soccer.

MSU opened the Crisp Soccer & Tennis Complex in the fall of 2008 thanks to a generous gift from Rosemary and Harry L. Crisp II.
