Arkansas 1 game 2010 • GAME 11 #21 BULLDOGS RETURN HOME FOR FINAL TIME IN 2010 TO FACE #13 ARKANSAS Mississippi State returns to Davis Wade Stadium for a Southeastern Conference matchup with Western Division foe Arkansas. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN and will kick off at 6:06 p.m. Prior to kickoff, the Bulldogs will honor its 22-member senior class. The group will be playing its final game home game of a four-year career that will span 50 games and include a pair of bowl trips. BULLDOGS REMAIN RANKED IN TOP 25 In this week’s polls, Mississippi State is ranked 21st in the BCS Standings and 22nd in both the Associated Press and the USA Today Coaches’ Poll. The Bulldogs dropped five spots in the AP and four places in the Coaches’ poll, but remain among the top 25 for the fifth week, the longest stretch since an eight-week run in 2000. MULLEN HEADED FOR ANOTHER YEAR 2 SUCCESS STORY Head coach Dan Mullen had coached two or more seasons at six schools prior to taking the top spot at Mississippi State, and at nearly every stop along the way Year Two has seen marked improvement. Wagner College went 6-5 in 1994 and 8-2 in 1995; Notre Dame improved from 5-7 in 1999 to 9-3 in 2000; Bowling Green went 8-3 in 2001 and 9-3 in 2002; Utah jumped from 10-2 in 2003 to 12-0 in 2004; and Florida improved from 8-3 in 2005 to 13-1 and national champions in 2006. The Bulldogs are 7-3 after 10 weeks this season, three games better than at the same point of the 2009 campaign. TURNOVER MARGIN TELLS STORY ON SEASON The most telling stat for Mississippi State this season has been its turnover margin. The Bulldogs are plus-11 in turnovers in their seven wins, and minus-4 in three losses. State has turned the ball over just five times in wins and nine times in losses. Prior to the Georgia game, Mississippi State ranked 90th nationally with a minus-3 turnover margin. This week, the Bulldogs are ranked 20th nationally with a plus-7 margin. DOGS CONTINUE TO EXCEL IN GROUND GAME In his 22 games as head coach at Mississippi State, Dan Mullen’s team has eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in all but one contest. State has rushed for 100+ in each game this season, including a team-best 409 against Houston. The Bulldogs also scored at least one rushing touchdown in each of the first nine contests, marking 19 times in 22 games the offense has scored at least one touchdown on the ground. After finishing the 2009 campaign with the school’s first-ever Southeastern Conference rushing title and ranking ninth nation- ally in rushing yards per game (227.6), the Bulldogs currently rank 18th nationally with a 211.7 ypg average. RUSHING VICTORIES HARBINGER FOR STATE WINS Mississippi State has outrushed its opponent seven times this season, winning each of those seven games. Conversely, only three opponents have tallied more yards on the ground than State this season - Auburn, LSU and Alabama (all ranked in the top 10 of this week’s BCS standings). DEFENSE HAS STEPPED UP BIG FOR BULLDOGS Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and co-defensive coor- dinator Chris Wilson joined the coaching staff with hopes of improving a defensive unit that finished 10th in the Southeastern Conference in total defense a year ago. The Bulldogs have done much more than just improve. Through eight games, the defensive unit has been one of the most impressive in the nation. State ranks 16th nationally in scoring (18.3 points per game allowed) and 13th in tackles for loss (7.40 per game) and 24th in turnovers gained (21). DOG ‘D’TURNING UP THE HEAT ON OFFENSES Mississippi State’s defense took a little while to get warmed up, but over the past seven games the unit has posted 56 tackles for loss (8.0 per game) and created 16 turnovers. Over the first three weeks, State’s defenders had only forced five turnovers and made only 18 tackles for loss. After the open- ing trio of games, MSU ranked 89th in turnover margin and 61st in tackles for loss, and the Bulldogs now rank among the nation’s top 20 in each. KEEPING OPPONENTS FROM SCORING TDS The Bulldog defense has done one thing particularly well all season - keep the opponent out of the endzone. State ranks only 43rd nationally (seventh in the SEC) in yards allowed per game. However the Bulldogs have the nation’s 16th best scoring defense (third in the SEC). State has allowed only 20 opponent touchdowns in 10 games, and only eight teams nationwide have allowed fewer. DEFENSE AT ITS BEST WITH BACKS AGAINST THE WALL One of the main reasons the Bulldogs have been able to keep opponents from scoring touchdowns is its remarkable redzone defense. State has allowed its foes to reach the 20 yardline 30 times this season, with opponents only scoring touchdowns 12 times (40 percent). The Bulldogs have the SEC’s third best overall redzone defense, allowing 22 scores on 30 trips, but its TD percentage ranks second in the conference. BULLDOGS SOLID FOURTH QUARTER SQUAD... Mississippi State has outscored its foes by 35 points in the fourth quarter this season. State has scored 68 points in the final frame, outpacing the opposition’s 33 in the same period. ...AND OUTSTANDING IN THE OPENING PERIOD State has been quick to jump on opponents, outscoring foes 85-27 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs scored a season-best 23 points in the opening frame at Houston, and have scored at least one touchdown in the opening quarter of each of their seven wins this season. NATIONAL STATISTICSTREND SHOW FORMULA FOR BULLDOGS’ SUCCESS Mississippi State ranks among the nation’s top 30 in each of the following statistical categories: rushing offense (18); rushing defense (20); scoring defense (16); net punting (28); turnover margin (20); tackles for loss (13) and sacks (30). SHERRODEARNSNATIONALACADEMICHONORSenior offensive lineman DerekSherrod was named to the
National Football Foundation 2010 Scholar-Athlete Class. One of 16 players nationwide to earn the honor, Sherrod is now a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, also known as the “Academic Heisman.”
Sherrod graduated with a 3.54 GPA in business with a focus on financial risk management, and has compiled a 4.0 in gradu-ate school.
Earlier this month, Sherrod was named first team CoSIDA Academic All-District, making him a finalist for the Academic All-America Team announced in December.
Derek Sherrod has been named Southeastern Conference offensive lineman of the week three times following the last six Bulldog games. The Columbus, Miss., native graded out at an outstanding 96 percent blocking rate and seven knockdown blocks in State’s win over Houston.
Sherrod helped pave the way for the Bulldog rushing attack to amass over 400 yards on the ground and score a season-high five touchdowns. Sherrod was also recognized following the Bulldogs’ win over Georgia.
Sherrod again earned the honor after posting his seventh 90 percent blocking grade of the season in the Bulldogs’ win over Kentucky.
BALLARDBECOMINGBIGPLAY,TOUCHDOWNMACHINEJunior Vick Ballard has scored 13 touchdowns for the
Bulldogs in his first season. Ballard has scored at least one touchdown in seven of his nine games played, and is third in the Southeastern Conference with an average of 8.6 points per game scored.
Ballard leads the Mississippi State offense with three TD rushes over 50 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown against Alcorn State. It was the longest run by a Bulldog since Jerious Norwood ripped off a 76-yarder against Florida in 2005.
The Pascagoula, Miss., native is currently tied for sixth in the school record book for rushing touchdowns in a single season.
RELFWORKINGWAYINTOSCHOOLRECORDBOOKSJunior quarterback Chris Relf has proven to be one of the
Bulldogs’ biggest threats on the offensive side of the ball. The junior quarterback is the team’s second leading rusher, and has posted 20 carries in three separate games - all Mississippi State victories.
Relf is only four yards away from becoming only the sixth quarterback in school history to eclipse the 1,000 yard rushing mark.
He currently ranks among the school’s all-time leaders in completion percentage, interception percentage, yards per attempts and passing efficiency (see page 14).
CHRISWHITECONTINUESTOIMPRESSSenior linebacker ChrisWhite had a career game in State’s
10-7 victory at Florida. The Vancleave, Miss., native posted 11 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks and the Bulldog captain was named both Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week and SEC Defensive Player of the Week, marking the first time a Bulldog earned the conference honor since 2007.
He earned the conference honor again following his 15 tackle, one interception game against Kentucky. He has posted 54 tackles in the last five games, and is currently fourth in the conference with a 8.9 tackle-per-game average.
CAPTAINSSELECTEDFOR2010TEAMMSU announced permanent team captains for the 2010 team
prior to the first game of the year. By a vote of their teammates, PernellMcPhee, DerekSherrod, ChrisWhiteand K.J.Wrightearned the honor.
BROOMFIELDRETURNSTOINTERCEPTINGWAYSSophomore cornerback Corey Broomfield has a knack for
picking off passes and the Palm Bay, Fla., native showed it again in State’s win over Houston. Broomfield intercepted a pair of Cougar passes and returned one for a touchdown. It was his third multiple-interception game and the third time he returned a pick for a score.
He’s tied for the national lead among active players with three career pick-sixes and the total has tied the Mississippi State school record. It’s also tied for second most in the history of the Southeastern Conference, and the youngster is only two-thirds through his sophomore season.
BRIGNONERETURNSPARKSOFFENSEIt’s not often that an offensive lineman is recognized as the
spark that ignites an offense, but that was exactly the case for the Bulldogs when senior center J.C.Brignonereturned to the field in the second half of State’s win over UAB.
Brignone, injured during the win at Houston, missed the Florida game and the first half of the UAB game. The Bulldog offense had scored on four of its previous 17 possessions, but with Brignone in at center, State scored on five of six second half possessions.
BULLDOGSAMONGNATION’SBESTINPUNTINGMississippi State punter Heath Hutchins may not be lead-
ing the nation in punting yards, but the senior has punted 47 times and allowed only 52 return yards. Hutchins has pinned opponents deep in their own territory 21 times this season. He’s also forced 15 fair catches with three fumbled and turned back over to State.
BUMPHISENTERSSCHOOL’STOP10With a fourth-quarter touchdown reception at Alabama,
sophomore wide receiver Chad Bumphis entered the Mississippi State top 10 in career touchdown catches with nine. Bumphis’ five receiving scores this season is one shy of entering the single-season top 10 as well.
BULLDOGNAMESABOUNDONPRESEASONWATCHLISTS
Through the summer, preseason watch lists for college football awards were announced and Mississippi State players were mentioned on quite a few. Senior defensive end PernellMcPhee was named to both the Bednarik and Lombardi lists, while offensive lineman Derek Sherrod joined him on the Lombardi watch list. Junior tight end Marcus Green was rec-ognized by the Mackey Award and senior center J.C.Brignonecaught the attention of Rimington Trophy. Senior linebackers K.J. Wright and Chris White were both on the initial Butkus Award list, while LeonBerrywas among the watch list for the Hornung Award, given to the nation’s most versatile player.
BULLDOGSEXCELINCLASSROOM22 Bulldog football players were named to the 2009 SEC
Academic Honor roll, including 18 members of the 2010 team. Over the past two seasons, 50 members of the football program have earned the honor, including 29 current players.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Despite a solid second-half charge, Mississippi State’s historical woes in the state of Arkansas con-tinued Saturday as the Bulldogs dropped a 42-21 decision to Arkansas at War Memorial Stadium.
With the win, Arkansas improved to 7-4 overall and 3-4 in the Southeastern Conference. With the setback, State fell to 4-7, 2-5 in league play, remaining winless inside the borders of the state of Arkansas all-time.
For the most part, the game was a showcase of two great players’ talents - Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett and Mississippi State running back Anthony Dixon. Through the air, Mallett was 18-for-45 for 313 yards and five touchdowns. Dixon had another great day on the ground, rushing 24 times for 176 yards and two scores.
It did not take long for Mississippi State to find the first big break in the game. After Arkansas received the opening kickoff, State’s Corey Broomfield intercepted Arkansas’ Mallett on the second play from scrimmage. After an end run by Chad Bumphis went for 49 yards to the Razorback 3, Arnil Stallworth scored on a 1-yard dive and the Bulldogs led 7-0 early in the contest.
But as quickly as the Bulldogs took that early lead, Arkansas would answer just as speedily. On the ensuing possession, UA got a big kickoff return to its own 41. After a run for no gain, two big pass plays from Mallett would lead to the score - the first a 21-yarder to Jared Wright and the second a 39-yard touchdown to Joe Adams.
However - after those two scores that came inside the first four minutes of kickoff - it would be nearly a quarter before either team manufactured any more points. Both teams strug-gled to muster any offense the rest of the first period.
But with 12:35 to go in the second quarter, Mallett would showcase his passing prowess again, this time hitting Cobi Hamilton in stride for a 58-yard touchdown. The Hogs led 14-7.
After stopping State on the next possesstion, Arkansas extended its lead to 14 on its next drive, a 10-play, 74-yard march that culminated with Mallett’s third touchdown pass of the afternoon. Mallett hit Wright from five yards out and UA led 21-7 with 4:53 to go before the intermission and that would remain the score at halftime.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half, putting together an impressive 11-play, 94-yard drive that resulted in State’s second score of the day. All 11 plays of the drive were rushes, many featuring Dixon, who would punch in the score on a 4-yard touchdown. Arkansas led 21-14 with early in the third period.
Unfortunately for Mississippi State, it did not take the Razorbacks long to answer the challenge. After it appeared State was going to stop UA on three down on the next posses-sion, on third-and-10 Mallett hit Hamilton on a slant pass which Hamilton ended up weaving downfield and taking 64 yards to the end zone. Arkansas led 28-14 with 8:14 to go in the third.
But right back came State and this time it only took one play to do the job. Dixon took a handoff from Chris Relf, bounced outside and rumbled 70 yards for the score. Derek DePasquale’s extra point trimmed the UA lead to 28-21 just 18 seconds after Arkansas’ score.
The teams went scoreless until early in the fourth quarter when the Hogs capitalized on a key turnover by the Bulldogs. State’s Dixon fumbled at midfield and Arkansas used that miscue to push its lead back to 14 points, essentially sealing the game’s fate. UA marched 50 in six plays, a drive capped with Mallett finding Greg Childs in the back of the end zone for the signal caller’s fifth touchdown pass of the contest.
The Razorbacks led 35-21 at that point and MSU could not muster another run at them the remainder of the game.
Arkansas tacked on a late touchdown with Broderick Green diving in from two yards out.

Dan Mullen was widely regarded as one of the top young minds in college football when he arrived at Mississippi State, and he brought not only an impressive offensive resume and a list of NFL-developed quarterbacks but also an energy and passion for the college game. With 15 years of experience in the collegiate coaching ranks, Mullen was named the 32nd head football coach in the history of Mississippi State University on December 10, 2008.
From the moment of Mullen’s announcement, Mississippi State fans have been reenergized. Supporters have turned out in the form of capacity crowds at Mullen’s appearances around the Southeast and the Bulldog faithful set a new State of Mississippi record with more than 31,000 in attendance at the team’s 2009 Maroon-White Spring Game in April.
The excitement continued throughout Mullen’s first fall on campus, as MSU set school records for total home attendance, average home attendance and posted three of the school’s top four largest single-game crowds.
Improvement wasn’t limited to fan enthusiasm, as Mullen ignited the Bulldog offense despite facing the nation’s toughest schedule. State’s rushing attack, led by first-team all-Southeast-ern Conference selection Anthony Dixon, finished ninth nation-ally with a 227.6 rushing yard average per game. State averaged 371.9 yards of total offense per game, the eighth highest total in school history and the most since 2000.
Mullen’s first season concluded with a rousing 41-27 victory over MSU’s in-state rival, which brought the Golden Egg back to Starkville. He became the only the third Mississippi State coach to win his Egg Bowl debut since 1939, joining Allyn McKeen and Jackie Sherrill. The Bulldogs posted a 5-7 overall record in 2009, including three road victories.
During the previous four seasons as the offensive coordina-tor and quarterbacks coach at the University of Florida, Mullen molded a Heisman Trophy, Davey O’Brien and Maxwell Award winning quarterback, along with a Rimington Trophy finalist and a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist.
In 2008 alone, Mullen’s offensive attack ranked third nation-ally in scoring – averaging better than 45 points per game as the Gators scored at least 30 points in 12 of 13 games. The 587 points scored eclipsed the previous University of Florida mark, set in 1996.
Florida has rushed for a new-school record 41 touchdowns that season and UF’s 80 rushing touchdowns over the two sea-sons ranked second nationally Overall, Florida’s rushing yardage of 2,987 this year ranks ninth nationally and is the third-highest total in school history.
Seven offensive players were recognized as All-Southeastern Conference selections following the season in which Florida claimed its second SEC Championship and a chance to play for its second national championship in three seasons.
The Gator offense ranked first in the SEC in scoring offense and total offense for a second-straight season in 2008, averaging 45.2 points and 442.4 yards per game. Under Mullen’s tutelage in 2007, UF averaged 42.5 points and 457.2 yards.
In 2007, Mullen directed the Gator offense to the third-highest point total ever by a UF unit and the top single-season marks for rushing touchdowns and third-down conversion percentage. Florida’s offense scored 75 touchdowns during the season most in the SEC.
Mullen orchestrated a UF attack that was the only one in the nation to have rushed for a touchdown and passed for a touchdown in every game during the season. He also helped UF score on 83 of 152 drives in 2007 for a league-best 54.6 percent, marking the best number since the stat was tracked by the SEC in 2000. Florida also averaged 7.0 yards per play last year, the fourth-best total in the nation and the Gators averaged 5.3 yards per rush, the second-best number in school history.
In 2007, he helped coach sophomore quarterback Tim Tebow into a Heisman Trophy, Maxwell and Davey O’Brien award win-ner, 78th Sullivan Award winner and AP first-team All- American among other honors.
He also tutored six offensive players to the All-SEC team: Tebow, Percy Harvin, Cornelius Ingram, Brandon James, Jim Tartt and Drew Miller.
Mullen played an integral role in Florida’s 2006 national championship, overseeing an offense that averaged 29.7 points and 396.1 yards per game. In the BCS National Championship Game, he engineered an attack that produced 41 points against a top-ranked Ohio State squad that was limiting opponents to less than 11 points per game on the year. Under Mullen’s tute-lage, quarterback Chris Leak opened the contest by going 9-for-9 for 99 yards and a touchdown en route to earning Offensive MVP honors.
The 2006 Gator offense posted 76 plays of 20 yards or more, 19 of which went for touchdowns. Florida passed for 29 touch-downs in 2006, while Leak ranked among the national leaders with 23 scoring tosses. Tebow matched UF’s single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with eight scores, and his 5.3 average yards per carry were second nation-ally among signal callers. Six different players averaged at least 5.0 yards per carry last season, including SEC Freshman of the Year Harvin.
In 2005, Chad Jackson played his way to Biletnikoff Award semifinalist status after matching the UF single-season record with 88 receptions, a figure that led the SEC and finished sixth nationally. Center Mike Degory was also named a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given annually to the nation’s top center, dur-ing that campaign. Both earned first-team All-SEC honors under Mullen’s tutelage.
Mullen went to Florida from Utah with head coach Urban Meyer, with whom he had spent the past 10 seasons. While the quarterbacks coach at Utah, Mullen developed Alex Smith – the first overall selection in the 2005 NFL Draft – from a pocket passer into an efficient executer of the spread offense, making him one of the most versatile threats in college football. Smith took over the starting job three games into Mullen’s tenure, passing for 2,247 yards and running for 452 to finish second in the Mountain West Conference in total offense in 2003.
The 2004 campaign saw Smith earn National Player of the Year honors from The Sporting News and Sports Illustrated, while also becoming Utah’s first-ever Heisman Trophy finalist and garnering final consideration for the Davey O’Brien and Walter Camp National Player of the Year Awards. Smith passed for 2,952 yards and 32 touchdowns and ran for 631 yards and 10 scores on the year, ranking second in the nation with a 176.5 efficiency rating and leading the Utes to a perfect 12-0 season and a Fiesta Bowl championship. As a team, Utah finished the 2004 season third in the nation in scoring offense (45.3) and total offense (499.8).
Prior to his stint at Utah, Mullen served as quarterbacks’ coach at Bowling Green for two seasons, putting up 6,627 yards of total offense and scoring 81 touchdowns during that span. In 2002, quarterback Josh Harris threw for 2,425 yards, ran for 737 yards and completed the campaign as the nation’s third-leading scorer.
Mullen spent the two years before his Bowling Green stint as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame, making a Fiesta Bowl appearance, and assisted with Syracuse’s 1998 BIG EAST cham-pionship and Orange Bowl run.
A two-year starter at tight end for Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., Mullen earned first-team All-Centennial Conference honors as a senior. He is married to the former Megan West, and the couple has a one-year-old son, Canon.

2010 MISSISSIPPI STATE FOOTBALL NOTES • GAME 11 VS. ARKANSAS
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Little time was wasted in Mississippi State establishing its dominance.
Two drives, in fact.Saturday night in front of an electrified crowd of 56,032 at Scott
Field, the fourth largest in school history, the Bulldogs ushered in the 2010 campaign in grand fashion by blowing past Memphis, 49-7, and spoiling the debut of Tigers coach Larry Porter.
It was MSU’s largest margin of victory since routing East Tennessee State 53-6 in October of 1998.
MSU racked up 569 yards of total offense with 372 coming through the air behind the arms of both Chris Relf and Tyler Russell. The Tigers (0-1), on the other hand, manufactured just 237 yards and were stymied throughout the night by the Bulldogs’ tenacious defense.
The first score was the result of a 55-yard strike from Relf to Leon Berry, his first-career touchdown, while the second came less than four minutes later when Russell made his highly-anticipated debut.
The former Meridian standout wasted little time living up to the hype coming out of high school when his first drive was capped with a 20-yard throw to Brandon Heavens to swell the lead to 14-0 with 6:11 left in the opening frame.
From that point, the scoring momentarily slowed. But with 2:21 left to intermission, the Bulldogs again found the endzone, this time when Vick Ballard, who had a game high 60 yards on the ground, scored his first-career touchdown on a 51-yard scamper to put his team up 21-0.
Heavens, who totaled a game-high 112 receiving yards, scored his second touchdown, this time on a 27-yard pass across the middle from Russell at the 12:23 mark. Three minutes later, Ballard found pay dirt again when he powered his way up the middle from the 1 for a 35-0 lead.
Then it was Chad Bumphis’ turn to get in on the scoring fun. With 6:57 left in the third, the sophomore from Tupelo hauled
in a 57-yard pass from Russell to go up 42-0. Early in the fourth, the two hooked up again, this time from 25 yards out for a 49-0 lead.
Bumphis finished with 100 receiving yards, while Russell was 13-of-16 passing for 256 yards and four touchdowns. Relf was 7 of 9 for 116 yards.
Defensively, Charles Mitchell led MSU’s assault with nine tackle, while Maurice Langston had two interceptions.

STARKVILLE, Miss. – It wasn’t 3-2 as it was here two years ago, but the defensive intensity was just as prevalent.
Thursday night in front of a nationally-televised ESPN audience and an energetic crowd of 54,806 at Scott Field, No. 21 Auburn sur-vived a valiant effort from Mississippi State to claim a hard-fought 17-14 victory in the SEC opener for both teams.
In a game filled with big plays at crucial moments, it was only fitting that the outcome wasn’t decided until the closing seconds.
In their final drive set up by a blocked 34-yard field goal by Fletcher Cox, the Bulldogs drove to the Auburn 41 after converting both fourth- and third-down opportunities. However, with 22 sec-onds left and MSU facing a fourth-and-15, the upset was thwarted when Chris Relf’s pass fell incomplete at the Auburn 25.
The Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1) finished with 246 yards of offense, while Auburn (2-0, 1-0) totaled 348 despite not scoring in the second half.
Relf finished the day 12-of-26 passing for 110 yards, while Chad Bumphis paced the MSU on the ground with 27 yards on three carries. He also led the Bulldogs with five receptions for 34 yards.
Auburn’s Cam Newton threw for 136 yards on 11-of-19 passing while rushing for a game-high 70 yards.
Defensively, Chris White paced MSU with 11 tackles, while K.J. Wright registered 10. The Bulldogs also forced two turnovers (one interception and one fumble recovery) and totaled two sacks.
“Every time we hit a high note, no one made the big play,” Mullen said. “That’s when you’ve got to explode and make those plays.”
The Tigers struck first on their opening possession, moving 68 yards in eight plays to take a 7-0 lead on a 39-yard scoring strike from Newton to Emory Blake.
However, the Bulldogs battled back and with 2:30 left in the opening quarter tied the game when offensive lineman Gabe Jackson recovered a Chris Relf fumble in the end zone to avoid disaster and bring to life the raucous crowd that filled the stands early on this muggy evening.
After Newton threw his second touchdown, this time from 12 yards out to Darvin Adams, Auburn swelled the lead to 17-7 on a 34-yard field goal by Wes Bryum.
But coming out of the locker room following intermission, the momentum shifted back toward the Bulldogs. Behind the arm of Relf, MSU orchestrated a 12-play, 63-yard drive and closed the gap to 17-14 at the 8:55 mark when Vick Ballard powered his way up the middle from the 1.
Mullen then pulled out his bag of tricks with an onside kick that was recovered by Sean Brauchle. However, the Bulldogs failed to capitalize and were forced to punt three players later.

2010 MISSISSIPPI STATE FOOTBALL NOTES • GAME 11 VS. ARKANSAS
BATON ROUGE, La. - For the first two quarters, Mississippi State’s stifling defense kept LSU’s big-play offense out of the end zone. But in the third frame, the Tigers finally found their rhythm and maintained it throughout the second half en route to posting a 29-7 victory.
With the win, the raucous crowd of 92,538 at Tiger Stadium saw No. 12 LSU extend its winning streak to 11-consecutive games against the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-2 on the year and 0-2 in SEC play.
Despite the final margin of victory, the Tigers led just 12-0 at the break behind four field goals by Josh Jasper covering 44, 32, 51 and 37 yards. The Bulldogs, though, wouldn’t be deterred heading into intermission.
Instead, they came out of the locker room to start the second half and orchestrated a 13 play, 81-yard drive that was capped by 1-yard plunge up the middle by Vick Ballard, closing the gap to 12-7.
Five plays into that drive, though, starting quarterback Chris Relf left the game for good with an injury. Freshman Tyler Russell replaced him and completed both of his passes for 36 yards in lead-ing MSU to its only score, while running twice for 9 yards.
However, the momentum was short-lived.From that point, the Tigers, who haven’t lost to MSU in Baton
Rouge since 1991, answered with back-to-back touchdowns to extend their lead to 26-7 before Jasper added his school-record fifth field goal in the fourth quarter for the game’s final points.
The Tigers’ offensive rhythm, coupled with an LSU defense that forced five turnovers, was just too much for Mississippi State to overcome.
In addition to forcing those miscues, which now totals nine the past two seasons combined, LSU (3-0, 2-0) held the Bulldogs to just 268 yards of total offense, with 115 coming through the air and 153 on the ground.
Relf, who was 5-of-8 passing for 34 yards and two interceptions before his early exit, paced MSU on the ground with 46 yards, while Robert Elliott totaled 40.
In relief action, Russell threw for 81 yards while completing 5 of his 10 passes. He was also picked off three times.
But just as stingy was MSU’s defense. The Tigers had just 15 first downs, two fewer than Mississippi State, and was held to only 261 yards. Only 96 of those yards came through the air, as quarterback Jordan Jefferson was 10 of 18 on the night. He also rushed for another 41 yards and a score, while Stevan Ridley led all rushers with 76 yards.

Game #4
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Not since 1951 had Mississippi State fans enjoyed a win against Georgia at Scott Field. And not since 1974 had they witnessed a victory against UGA anywhere.
That all changed with State’s 24-12 victory to the delight of an enthusiastic crowd of 56,721, the third-largest in school history. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak to the visiting Bulldogs, while improving MSU’s record to 2-2 overall, 1-2 in SEC play.
After forcing Georgia to punt on its first drive, MSU drove 53 yards in four plays and took the quick lead following a 13-yard scoring scamper by Vick Ballard with 12:17 to play in the opening quarter.
For MSU, that would be their last points until the 13:59 mark of the fourth quarter, when Sean Brauchle drilled a 44-yard field goal for a 10-6 advantage. It was his first made field goal of the season and the second longest of his career.
When the outcome was in doubt, Georgia (1-3, 0-3) managed only two scoring drives, which ended with second-quarter field goals by Blair Walsh covering 25 and 35 yards.
Georgia had a touchdown denied in the opening quarter when State freshman defensive back Nickoe Whitley forced the ball loose, one of two UGA fumbles on the night, at the goal line and recovered it to preserve the MSU lead.
Still, the victory wasn’t sealed until MSU orchestrated an impres-sive drive to thwart any comeback the Dawgs might have had.
Starting at the 10:07 mark, Mississippi State marched 93 yards in 10 plays, capping the drive when Chris Relf hit Arceto Clark across the middle for a 33-yard touchdown, sending the diehard MSU fans into a frenzy.
And as they had done all day, the defense punctuated the vic-tory with another stout series that kept the Georgia offense at bay Four plays. No first downs. MSU ball at the 21.
Then came the dagger, delivered emphatically by Ballard on a 1-yard plunge for the Bulldogs’ final points of the evening.
Georgia would score again on a 40-yard reception by Tavarres King, but it was too little, too late.
MSU finished the game with 321 yards of offense, while Georgia manufactured 387, with 90 coming on its final possession with the outcome already decided.
Relf posted one of his more effective games, completing 8 of his 13 passes for 135 yards. Chad Bumphis accounted for 64 of those yards on four catches. Relf also rushed for 97 yards on a career-high 21 carries, giving him a career-best 232 total yards of offense. Ballard grounded out 77 en route to scoring two touchdowns.
Defensively, Charles Mitchell paced MSU with 10 tackles, while K.J. Wright and Chris White were each credited with seven.

2010 MISSISSIPPI STATE FOOTBALL NOTES • GAME 11 VS. ARKANSAS
STARKVILLE, Miss. – If it wasn’t Chad Bumphis making big catches, it was Vick Ballard churning out big runs.
And on an absolutely gorgeous Saturday afternoon at Scott Field, those two Mississippi State standouts proved to be a lethal threat as the Bulldogs routed Alcorn State, 49-16 in front of a crowd of 50,439 to mark MSU’s seventh-straight sellout.
Bumphis, a sophomore from Tupelo, posted career highs in receptions (9) and yards (133), while Ballard, a junior from Pascagoula, rushed for a career-best 119 yards on just 8 carriers.
Both also showed the propensity to find the end zone, as they combined for five scores.
Bumphis, who also totaled 38 yards on the ground, accounted for two, including the first that gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 advantage on a 3-yard pass from Chris Relf three minutes into the game. His second came midway through the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-7, this time on a 7-yard pass from Relf.
Ballard, who entered the game with 165 yards through the first four games, became the first Mississippi State player to score three times since current San Francisco 49ers rookie Anthony Dixon achieved the feat against Middle Tennessee State in 2007.
He scored on runs of 17, 1 and 75 yards, the longest play from scrimmage this season.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 3-2 on the year and travel to Houston next Saturday for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Cougars, also excelled in special teams.
Senior Leon Berry returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, marking his second return for a score (89-yarder a year ago against Georgia Tech).
In all, MSU totaled 566 yards of offense, with 230 coming on the ground. Through the air, Relf was 11-of-15 passing for a career-high 209 yards, while Tyler Russell came off the bench to complete 8 of his 14 passes for 127 yards.
In addition, LaDarious Perkins rushed for 48 yards on 10 carries and scored the game’s final points with 2:40 left on a 2-yard plunge.
Defensively, MSU limited the Braves (3-1) to 330 yards. Freshman quarterback Brandon Bridge accounted for a majority of the produc-tion, as he threw for 193 yards and a score on 13-of-24 passing. He also rushed for another 77 yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs “D” also posted a season-high 15 tackles for loss, including four sacks. Chris White accounted for 2.5 sacks, while Corey Broomfield had one. K.H. Wright led all tacklers with eight.

Game #6
HOUSTON, Texas - It was Houston that owned the reputation of possessing a high-octane offense, but when all was said and done, it was Mississippi State keeping the scoreboard operator busy.
The Bulldogs racked up 538 yards of offense, including a season-best 409 on the ground, en route to a convincing 47-24 victory at Robertson Stadium to snap Houston’s 18-game home winning streak.
It was also the Bulldogs’ first win against the Cougars since 1972 and their first in Houston since 1965. MSU had lost three in a row in this series and seven of the last eight prior to Saturday’s rout.
More importantly, the win improved MSU to 4-2 overall, leaving it two victories shy of becoming bowl eligible.
Yet as lopsided as the outcome was, it was Houston (3-2) get-ting on the scoreboard first, taking an early 7-0 lead in the opening quarter following an 8-play, 64-yard march.
From that point, though, it was all Mississippi State, which scored 40 of the game’s next 43 points.
Running back Vick Ballard, who entered the night with an SEC-best nine touchdowns, added to his total on a 5-yard run to even the score at 7-apiece. Then it was quarterback Chris Relf that gave the Bulldogs the lead for good when he capped a 3-play, 75-yard drive on a 5-yard scoring scamper. Ballard did his part to set up the touchdown with a 61-yard scamper.
The junior from Pascagoula, who grounded out 134 yards, made it 21-7 following a 12-yard run as the Bulldogs scored on their third-consecutive possession.
Following a safety that swelled the lead to 23-7, kicker Sean Brauchle made it 26-7 on a 47-yard field goal, the second-longest of his career and his longest this season.
Houston did stop the bleeding when Matt Hogan closed the gap to 26-10 on a 32-yard field goal.
After the Cougars forced MSU to punt on its next possession, they got the ball back only to see their drive end in disaster when Corey Broomfield returned an interception 27 yards for a touch-down and 33-10 advantage. It was the first of two interceptions on the night for the sophomore from Palm Bay, Fla.
Then came the second half, where the MSU scoring started like it did in the opening half - Ballard scoring a rushing touchdown. This time, it was from 12-yards out, leaving him four shy of the school’s single-season record.
State’s final points of the evening were the result of a LaDarious Perkins 20-yard run. Perkins finished with 78 rushing yards, while Relf had 96. Relf also completed 7 of his 14 passes for 57 yards, while Tyler Russell came off the bench to throw for 72 yards on 5-of-9 passing.

Game #7
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - No intimidation in the Swamp on Saturday. None at all.
In a venue where Florida has historically flexed its muscles with ease against opposing foes, on this particular night it was Mississippi State delivering blow after to blow en route to a 10-7 upset against the No. 22-ranked Gators in front of stunned crowd of 90,517 at Ben Griffin Stadium.
It was MSU’s first win at Florida since 1965.The Bulldogs (5-2, 3-2), who have now won four in a row for the
first time since 1999, turned to their running game early and often and found success throughout the night
Florida (4-3, 2-3), which has now dropped three straight for the first time since 1988, had no answer as Mississippi State ran for 212 yards and dominated the line of scrimmage.
“This is not an upset,” said second-year MSU coach Dan Mullen, who won two national championships as an assistant under Urban Meyer at Florida. “We expected to win the football game.”
Junior Vick Ballard, who earlier in the week predicted a win, led MSU with 98 yards on 20 carries, while quarterback Chris Relf grounded out 82. Relf only threw for 33 yards on 4-of-9 passing, but his arm wasn’t needed as the Bulldogs were punishing on the ground.
In fact, in one stretch from the second quarter through the third, they ran the football 24-consecutive times.
And it was the ground game that produced MSU’s touchhown, a 6-yard keeper by Relf with 45 seconds left in the opening quarter for a 10-0 lead. Mississippi State’s first score was the result of a Sean Brauchle 31-yard field goal seven minutes into the game.
The Bulldogs’ defense, led by Chris White’s 11 tackles and 2 ½ sacks, shutout the Gators in the first half. But in the third, Florida finally scored when Omarious Hines found the end zone from 5-yards out at the 4:15 mark.
Late in the fourth, the Gators were again deep in MSU territory, but the scoring threat was thwarted when White recovered a Jeffery Demps fumble at the 17.
Still, Florida had a chance to send the game into overtime, but a Chas Henry 42-yard field goal with 4 seconds left was wide right, and the MSU sideline erupted with cheers and hugs.
As a result, the Bulldogs find themselves 5-2 for the first time since 2000 and one win shy of being bowl eligible for the first time since earning a berth to the Liberty Bowl in 2007.

Game #8

Game #10
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - In a key SEC matchup featuring two ranked teams Saturday night, it was a simple case of one team creating more big plays and keeping mistakes at a minimum.
Unfortunately for No. 17 Mississippi State, it was Alabama enjoy-ing those critical advantages.
In front of raucous crowd of 101,871 at historic Bryant-Denny Stadium, the No. 11-ranked Crimson Tide rebounded from its loss at LSU to turn back the up-and-coming Bulldogs, 30-10.
The win was the third-straight for Bama in this long-standing series, while the loss snapped MSU’s six-game winning streak.
Yet, despite the margin of victory, it was just a 6-3 affair midway through the second quarter. However, it was at that point Alabama began to find its offensive rhythm as well as keeping its defensive intensity intact.
The momentum swing came with 7:06 left in the opening half on a 45-yard scoring strike from Greg McElroy to Marquis Maze that produced the first touchdown of the evening and extended the Tide’s lead to 13-3.
Five minutes later, the Bulldogs’ D gave up the rare big play on the season, as last year’s Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram turned a short screen pass into a 78-yard scoring scamper to put his team up 20-3.
In the third, the Tide wasted little time extending the deficit, as its first play from scrimmage resulted in a 56-yard run by Julio Jones to swell the lead to 27-3.
However, the Bulldogs didn’t fold.Instead, the defense tightened, while the offense finally found
the end zone in the final frame. With 8:08 to play on this cool, breezy fall night, backup quarter-
back Tyler Russell hit wideout Chad Bumphis in the back of the end zone from 28 yards out, making it a 30-10.
It was the fifth TD pass on the year for the freshman from Meridian and the fifth receiving touchdown for Bumphis.
MSU’s first points of the night came on a 24-yard field goal by Derek Depasquale with 5:37 remaining in the first quarter that evened the score at 7-apiece.
For the game, Alabama (8-2, 5-2) outgained MSU in total offense, 452-299. Mississippi State did manufacture 149 yards on the ground, led by Vick Ballard’s game-high 80 yards. Through the air, Russell and Relf combined for 150 yards on 12-of-23 passing.
Defensively, the Bulldogs held the All-American Ingram to just 53 yards on 18 carries, well below his average. However, McElroy completed 12 of his 18 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns.
