It’s such a simple question, and yet very revealing. If you ask the average person on the street that question, you may hear a mundane answer. But ask a Girl Scout and you’ll hear:

“We toured the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.” “I learned that true beauty lies within.” “I coordinated a blood drive in my community.”

Simply put, Girl Scouts get to do more. More exploration, more self-discovery, and more community building. With the support of generous donors, foundations and corporations, we look forward to giving girls even more opportunities in the years to come.

The following stories reveal how Girl Scouts are using the three keys to leadership (discover, connect and take action) to make our world a better place. We hope you’re inspired by their answers to the question: “What did you do today?” Yours in Girl Scouting,

Allison Ochoa, Chairman of the Board Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland

Shelly ChenowethChief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland

What Did You Do Today?

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), one of the most well known and well loved organizations in the nation, implemented a nation-wide rebranding in July 2010 to reach a new generation of girls.

After extensive research and development, Girl Scouts implemented a multichannel brand campaign that is designed to reacquaint the country

with the iconic organization and communicate the power girls have to change the world through Girl Scouting. The campaign, known by the tagline What Did You Do Today?, is also key to boosting the number of girls and adult volunteers who participate in Girl Scouting annually after a period of declining membership. The branding, in the works

as part of the organization’s comprehensive transformation that began in 2004, is composed of a striking new visual identity, which includes a distinctive trefoil mark, revised color palette, and refreshed logo that was originally created in the 1970s by the legendary designer Saul Bass.

Starry–Eyed Dreams Come True at NASAGirls in Space ProgramWhile many girls their age spend their time looking down at

cell phones and iPods, Girl Scouts Allison Stukey (Wichita)

and Shelbey Logan (Salina) spend most of their time looking

up—at the stars.

Allison and Shelbey, along with volunteers Fred Gassert and

Brindi Stables, made up one of only 10 Girl Scout Council

teams (out of 109) selected to attend a Girls in Space

program at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt,

MD in July 2010, to learn about NASA’s Science Mission

Directorate (SMD). Upon their return, these Girl Scouts were

charged with developing their own Girl Scout Astronomy

Clubs, giving future generations of girls the opportunity to

reach for the stars.

Allison discovered astronomy, her true passion, not while

sitting in a classroom or surfing YouTube. She discovered her

inner scientist through Girl Scouts.

“North High School currently has no astronomy classes,” said

Stukey. “My Girl Scout troop went on a campout two years

ago at Camp Four Winds. We got to see the Leonid meteor

shower. It was so cool! With Girl Scouts, I’ve also had the

opportunity to visit the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson many

times, and I’ve even got my grandparents, aunt and uncle

more interested in NASA and in space in general.”

Girl Scouts Given Opportunities to Lead through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

In a world being transformed by technology, only one-fifth of American scientists and

engineers are women. What’s missing in science education for girls?

Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland (GSKH) is meeting this challenge head-on, introducing

girls to exciting programs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Here

are just a few of the programs GSKH offered in 2010:

Rootbeer,RocketsandRobots: Girls learned to brew root beer, build and

launch rockets, and design and create working robots at Starwoods Outdoor

Center in Clearwater.

TheMagicofChemistry:Girls learned how to use chemistry to analyze ink,

soil samples and handwriting to solve a mystery at Emporia State University.

GetWiTIt:The Women in Technology (WiT) group at Butler Community

College showed Girl Scouts how to use the computer as a tool for success

and helped them earn their Discovering Technology and Architecture Badges.

Great Bend Girl Scouts had fun creating their own “healthy” magazine covers during their

Uniquely Me program series. Over the course of 8 weeks, these Girl Scouts learned about

health, self-image, media, friendships, bullying and how to handle stress.

Girl Scouts Advocate for Healthy Media Images for Girls By the time the average girl graduates from high school, she will have spent 15,000

hours watching television versus 12,000 hours in school. This does not include the

hours spent online, playing video games, listening to the radio, or reading magazines(1).

The Girl Scout Research Institute survey, Girls and Body Image

(2010), revealed alarming statistics about teen girls’ relationships

with the media and fashion industry.

• Nearly 90% of girls surveyed say the media places a lot of pressure on girls to be thin

• 60% of girls compare themselves to models

• More than half of girls (55%) admit they diet to lose weight

• 31% admit to starving themselves or refusing to eat as a strategy to lose weight

Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland, along with Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), made a

historic commitment to developing programming and policy solutions that promote

girls’ healthy living and media literacy. In partnership with the Dove Self–Esteem Fund,

a new curriculum resource was developed to help improve girls’ media literacy skills

called It’s Your Story, Tell It!, the third in the journey book program series.

In addition to developing programming for girls, GSUSA worked closely with

Congresswomen Tammy Baldwin (D—WI) and Shelley Moore Capito (R–WV) to

introduce the Healthy Media for Youth Act (H.R. 4925). This bill supports media

literacy programs and youth empowerment groups, facilitates research on how images

of women and girls impact youth, and establishes a National Taskforce on Women and

Girls in the Media.

Over the course of the next two years, Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland will be

conducting community conversations around the Council to educate and inform the

public about the issue, in addition to working with state and local elected officials.

Girl Scout Earns Silver Award, Saves LivesGirl Scout Cadette Abby Maycock (Emporia), took action to

“make the world a better place” by organizing an American Red

Cross blood drive in September 2010 at the Amend Girl Scout

Center in Emporia.

Abby took on all aspects of the event—from planning to

recruiting donors to serving snacks the day of—all a part of

earning her Girl Scout Silver Award. The Girl Scout Silver Award

is the highest award a girl age 11 to 14 can earn in Girl Scouting.

“This award represents a girl’s accomplishments in Girl

Scouting and her community as she grows and works to

improve her life and the lives of others,” said Alice Christian,

assistant leader of Abby’s Troop 37302. “I couldn’t be happier

that Abby chose Red Cross for her project.”

The drive reached its goal with 13 units of blood collected,

including several first-time donors. Through her efforts, these

units may help save up to 39 lives.

Community Service a Cornerstone for Girl Scouts Last year, Girl Scouts nationwide provided more than 75 million hours of direct service to their communities, and Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland certainly helped contribute to that total. Here are just a few of the community service projects completed by Girl Scouts across the Kansas Heartland Council:

Good Turn for Goodwill Girl Scouts are encouraged to

participate in this community service project every March on

behalf of Goodwill and their community. More than 550 Girl

Scouts participated in this fun and simple event that allows

Girl Scouts to give back to their communities by collecting

material donations for Goodwill Industries.

Project Re-Directory More than 4,500 old phone books

were collected with the participation of more than 20

Girl Scout Troops.

Cookie Share Girl Scouts learn entrepreneurial skills

such as marketing, customer service and money handling

through the annual Cookie Program, but they also learn

how to “share the sweetness.” Through the Cookie Share

program, Girl Scouts across the council collected more than

10,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to donate to Catholic

Charities, the Kansas Food Bank and our military men

and women of McConnell Air Force Base and the Kansas

National Guard.

March 2012 marks the 100th Birthday of Girl Scouting when founder Juliette Low phoned her cousin to say: “Come right over! I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world, and we’re going to start it tonight!”

We’re looking forward to the many exciting things our anniversary year holds, and hope you’ll join us for the celebration! Look for more information about anniversary events, celebrations and ideas for ways to commemorate this milestone!

Looking Forward to 2012

The Girl Scout LawI will do my best to be

honest and fair, friendly and helpful,

considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and

responsible for what I say and do, and

to respect myself and others, respect authority,

use resources wisely, make the world a better place,

and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

The Girl Scout PromiseOn my honor, I will try:

To serve God and my country, To help people at all times,

And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
