In fact, a recent McKinsey Global Survey shows that 84 percent of executives say innova‐ tion is extremely or very important to their companies’ growth strategy. The trick, it seems, is generating breakthrough ideas, selecting the right ideas, prototyp‐ ing, and developing business cases – in short, organizing the innovation process from start to finish. Seems like a lot to take on. When asked what one thing would make the most difference in their compa‐ nies’ innovation performance, the leaders said process improvement. To some, a process for innovation is an oxymoron ‐ inspired, radical products and services that defy the norm cannot be produced through structured methods. Rod Greder of Awear Technologies and New Productivity Group disagrees, saying the key to success is to “integrate innovation into the strategic planning effort”. An international consultant and facilitator in the area of new product development and innovation, Greder advocates that innovation benefits from formalized processes. “A framework allows you to ‘systematize’ innovation and new product and new service de‐ velopment.” (Continued on page 5)

The McKinsey Global Survey confirms this, reporting that 45 percent of companies with set formal strategic priorities for innovation believe they are good at commercialization. That number increases to 56 percent among the respondents at companies with a very or extremely formalized process for commercializing innovations. Formality clearly makes a difference. Greder offers this advice for successful innovation, “Make it a priority and then work toward the goal of commercializing it.” Dr. Greder will be in Winnipeg on March 17 and 18 as a part of QNET’s 2011 Innovation Series. The two sessions, Innovation Tools and New Product Development, can be taken individually or combined to create a two-day series that covers innovation from concept to commercial prod-uct. The sessions are designed to provide you with a solid foundation to build a world-class, new product, or new service development framework for your organization.
