Dear Friends,

As another hot St. Louis summer quickly winds down we could not be more pleased with what you have helped us accomplish in just short of a year. The majority of the construction on the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House, and the 300th in the world, took place this summer, and we will host a grand opening celebration on September 29th to help thank everyone who helped make this new House a home.

But as summer comes to a close, we can all look forward to our next step in providing a “home-away-from-home” to twenty more families each night and at least 700 more per year. Years of planning and generosity will come to fruition with the opening of the newest Ronald McDonald House. I have to admit, it hasn’t looked much like a home with cranes surrounding it for the past few months, but knowing what will be made possible once the House opens has made me excited to cut the ribbon. In such a short letter it is impossible for me to sufficiently express my gratitude to the donors, committee members, and volunteers who have made such an inspiring project possible.

Summer also proved exciting because of moving the Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. John’s Mercy Children’s Hospital to the hospital’s new pediatric tower on July 19th. This new space is twice as large as our previous room. Here, we will be able to provide even more families with a place to unwind from the hospital with snacks, television, showers, Internet access, and laundry facilities at no cost to St. Louisians, as well as out-of-town families.

At the end of the day, nothing can compare to seeing the relief and smile on each family’s face knowing they have a place to call home at one of the scariest times in their lives. Knowing we can take their minds off their hardships for even a minute makes every hour we spend behind the scenes worth it.

At the heart of our cause are individuals who volunteer in our House or Family Rooms, make dinners at our Houses, send in donations, or even simply tell their friends what we’re all about. Each day I am surprised by the lengths to which people are willing to go to help others. Thank you for making this experience worthwhile.

It is 7 a.m. and summer break has officially started. I should be sleeping in, planning crazy slumber parties, and going to the movies with my best friends. But I’m not. In fact, I’m already

awake, and sunlight is streaming through the blinds on my window. Gazing at the flowered wallpaper on the walls of my room, I can’t go back to sleep. I have too much on my mind, so I decide to go eat breakfast with my parents. Today is going to be a busy day. I might as well get an early start.

The spacious kitchen is quiet and empty when my parents and I get there, but a Polish woman named Galina and her young son, Dawid, join us soon. Dawid greets me with a toothy grin that brightens the entire room, and I can’t help but smile back. Later, Ali, an elderly man comes in as well, and we all sit down to have breakfast together. There is a sense of community here. It is almost as if we are one big international family, and that feels right. After all, this is a house that love built. This is the Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis.

My name is Shelley Zhou, and the St. Louis Ronald McDonald House is currently my home for part of the summer.

I was born three months prematurely, and had a brain hemorrhage soon after I was born, which is similar to a stroke. Doctors diagnosed me with spastic Cerebral Palsy (CP), a condition that affects my motor skills, and caused my muscles to be very tight. In fact, I can’t walk independently. However, on May 27th, I had a special operation at St. Louis Children’s Hospital called the Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). A neurosurgeon opened up my spine, removed a piece of bone, and cut about sixty-five percent of one of my nerve roots. The surgery has reduced the spasticity in my legs, and it is already easier for me to walk. Physical therapy is still very important though, and, while I’m staying at the Ronald McDonald House, I have to go to the hospital every day for physical therapy sessions.

Dawid, my neighbor at the Ronald McDonald House, is an eight-year-old boy who also has Cerebral Palsy. He and Galina flew all the

way from Katowice, Poland, to St. Louis for the SDR surgery after finding out about it through their doctor, and we actually received the operation on the same day. Despite the language barrier, Dawid and I have become pretty good friends ever since we met on the day before our surgeries. I am so grateful to have met such a bright, fun little boy at the Ronald McDonald House. He is almost like the little brother that I have never had.

Dawid and many other people are important members of the Ronald McDonald House “family” that I have built in St. Louis

during my stay. There really is a wonderful feeling of family and community here at the big, Victorian house on West Pine Boulevard. Everybody has a story: a sad one or a happy one. It is this sad or happy story that binds us together as friends and neighbors. We rejoice together, and we also empathize with one another.

The people who volunteer here are amazing. They, along with the staff, are the ones who have established the framework and structure of this house. There are volunteers who practically live at the Ronald McDonald House, and work through the evenings making sure that everything is running smoothly. But there are also volunteers that come in once a week or once a month to cook dinner for the families and clean up the House. To me, it doesn’t matter whether or not volunteers work here frequently or not. I appreciate all of them. Thanks to the volunteers, people like Ali who are worried sick about their loved ones, and spend all day in the hospital can really come “home” at the end of the day.

Home. The Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis truly is a “home-away-from-home” for me. It is filled to the brim with the love that built it. Thus, even though I am a teenager who moans about not seeing her best friends

for weeks and even though Dawid is a little boy in a strange land far away from home, it isn’t so bad. It’s not bad because it is not a cold empty hotel. It is a home filled with rebellious teens, naughty little brothers, playful sisters, loving mothers, busy fathers, kind grandfathers, and smiling aunties. The Ronald McDonald House is home.

After battling Cerebral Palsy, Shelley shares her story of a surgery allowing her to walk again and of

her stay at the Ronald McDonald House

The 25th Annual Cassidy Turley/Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament was a great success,

raising more than $560,000 with the help of 240 golfers, 204 sponsors, and 140 volunteers. The event kicked off on June

13th with a sit-down dinner auction at Forest Hills Country Club in Chesterfield, sponsored by Major Brands. Golfers and sponsors received tickets to the dinner auction where they bid on numerous exciting oral auction items, and enjoyed fabulous dinner and drinks. The tournament started the next day, June 14th with a morning and afternoon tee off.

The registration fee included lunch, refreshments on the course, a cocktail hour with buffet after the tournament, and a special gift for each golfer. The

event was dedicated to Matt Bazoian, who passed away tragically days before the

tournament. He was the son of Co-Chair, Scott Bazoian, Vice President of Cassidy Turley. Seeing the generosity of the individuals and companies involved really warms the hearts of us all and reaffirms why this event is so special to Ronald McDonald House Charities and the

families who stay with us. View photos of the dinner auction and

Every other Tuesday evening, you can find Lynn Freese enthusiastically volunteering

in the office at the Ronald McDonald House on West Pine. On one particular Tuesday in March, Lynn was especially cheery. Earlier in the afternoon she received word that her son, David Freese, was going to be the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting third baseman.

Lynn couldn’t stop smiling as she handled a whirlwind of duties on this busy evening - including checking guests out, answering the phone, locating ping-pong equipment, keeping a malfunctioning washing machine under control, and updating the software on several computers.

“Things are super busy today, but I’m just so excited and proud to hear the news! I could not be happier right now!” Lynn said.

Lynn, a retired teacher from LaSalle Springs Middle School in Wildwood, began volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House last July. Ronald McDonald House Charities is looking for West County residents, like Lynn, to volunteer at the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House and the 300th House in the world.

The House, opening September 29th, will provide a “home-away-from-home” for 20 families each night whose children are being treated at West

County hospitals. With an average length of stay of ten days, more than 700 families will be helped each year. Volunteers can help House Managers around the new House, assist with maintenance and service projects, or participate in the Family Dinner Program by preparing warm meals for the families.

“After my retirement, I was looking for something to do that I could call my own. I checked into various organizations and discovered Ronald McDonald House. I am a people person, so I thought this was the perfect match. I get to help out this great community and meet amazing people each day!” Lynn said.

Last year, Lynn met a family from Oklahoma staying at the Ronald McDonald House while their teenage son, Brady, awaited a heart transplant. She was overcome by Brady’s story and excited to discover a way to help brighten Brady’s hospital stay.

“As soon as I found out Brady was a Cardinals fan, I knew my son, David, had to meet him. David came to the hospital for a visit, and they ended up chatting for over two hours! They still

stay in touch, too!” Lynn said.David’s visit meant a lot to Brady,

but Lynn feels Brady inspired David and herself more than he knows.

“Brady told us that he understood someone had to die in order for him to live, and that really stuck with me. This teenager definitely humbled us – he made us realize that you have to value each opportunity life hands you,” Lynn said.

Lynn admires the strength of each family that stays at the Ronald

McDonald House and loves working in such a compassionate environment. Each time she volunteers, she encounters families that are going through difficult times, whether they are first time, long-term, or repeat guests.

However, each family still maintains a positive outlook on life.

“This volunteer position brings me in contact with people who face great obstacles, but they still have so much strength and optimism," Lynn said. "It’s easy to get caught up in the negative details, but the House guests taught me to appreciate everything you already have.”

A lmost immediately after doors opened at the newest Ronald McDonald Family Room, Barbara Unnerstall, the first to use the new facility, rushed

in with a plastic bag full of clothes and went straight for the washing machines. Barbara, whose grandson is at St. John’s Mercy Children’s Hospital before having orthopedic surgery for Cerebral Palsy, frequents the Family Room because “it feels like I’m getting out of the hospital.” The newest Family Room re-opened at St. John’s on July 19th. Over the course of the day, countless patients, doctors, nurses, and hospital workers walked into the Family Room looking like they had just entered an entirely different world.

The new space is twice as large as the previous Family Room at St. John’s, which had been at the heart of the pediatric division until most of the pediatric population

moved to a newer facility within the hospital. St. John’s decision to move the Family Room to the new facility reunited it with the entire pediatric population, including the pediatric intensive care and neonatal intensive care units. The Family Room’s move and expansion were made possible through the generosity of the Department of Pediatrics and what department chair Joseph Kahn calls a “continued commitment to provid[ing] compassionate healing environments for patients and their families.” The new Family Room, built in partnership with O'Toole Design and ISC Contracting, still provides the same services as the former facility, such as laundry machines and hot showers, but also offers a more expansive home-like environment with new features like multiple lounge areas and access to a rooftop garden. But behind all the new furniture, donated again by Rothman Furniture, appliances, and electronics is the feeling of being at home. When the difficulty of living day-to-day inside the walls of a hospital has families looking for a place to unwind, Family Room Director Judy Schuler believes that “we just make things easier.”

Since the program began in 2005, visitors have used the Family Room as a substitute for home after being blindsided by the illness of their child. The volunteers are always the first to lend a helping hand to families who walk into the Family Room, and the first day at St. John’s was no different. Thriess Britton and Donna Kendrick, the new Family Room’s first pair of volunteers, both come to St. John’s time and time again because, as mothers themselves, they feel a connection to the families they see walk through the doors. “The best part is knowing that you’ve touched someone,” Thriess said. “The families are just so appreciative.”

A special thank you and tribute to Randy Kalin for 20 years of service and friendship to RMHC of Metro St. Louis

Lindsey Fletcher joined RMHC nearly three months ago as the Family Room Assistant. When she is not at RMHC, Lindsey enjoys spending time with her friends and family, singing, shopping, gardening, baking, and traveling. Before

coming to RMHC, Lindsey worked as a personal banker for Royal Banks of Missouri.

Sue Shiels After using the Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Louis Children's Hospital in June 2009 when her son, Kenny, underwent spinal fusion surgery, Sue was thrilled with the new opportunity to work for RMHC as the Database Coordinator. Sue loves to spend time with her husband, Jim, and her four boys, James, Chris, William, and Kenny.

Moneta Group’s inspiring commitment to volunteerism within the St. Louis

community has certainly left an impression on Ronald McDonald House Charities. Black tie dinners, gala events, and top fundraising teams have been the building blocks of a strong relationship that Moneta has created through years of involvement.

But for Moneta, association with RMHC is not just about sponsorship. Moneta Principal Don Kukla says they “challenge employees to find charities they want to support, not only to give to, but to get actively involved with.” Moneta has done just that.

This past summer, Moneta did not hesitate to help out with the 1st Annual RMHC Ride, becoming the top fundraising

team and raising over $20,000 for RMHC families. But what was equally impressive was seeing Moneta employees riding through Forest Park and making a personal impact on the event. Getting involved with RMHC seemed like an obvious choice for Don and Moneta since “they make it so easy to get involved.”

But Moneta’s involvement does not stop there. In addition to being a “Gold Pedal Sponsor” for the RMHC Ride, Moneta was the title sponsor of the 25th Anniversary Gala and is the presenting sponsor for the Gala of Gratitude celebrating the opening of the newest Ronald McDonald House. Moneta also made a significant donation to the Capital Campaign to help fund the project.

In addition to sponsoring events, Moneta gets involved in other ways that also have a tremendous impact on RMHC families. As part of the RMHC Dinner

Program, Moneta employees cook warm meals for families returning to the House after long hours at the hospital.

Your retirement plan, primarily your Individual Retirement Account (IRA), is an investment asset that can be used for Planned Charitable Giving to Ronald McDonald House Charities. Your IRA can be one that you have made contributions to through the years or one that has received a rollover from a retirement plan such as a 401(k) plan. While you can make charitable gifts from a retirement plan other than an IRA, you have more control over your IRA than you may have your other retirement plans. There are income and estate tax benefits to you and your beneficiaries.

You can make charitable gifts from your IRA by taking a distribution and giving it to charity. The distribution is taxable income and you receive an itemized deduction for the charitable contribution. When taxable income is computed on your Federal tax return, while there may not be a dollar for dollar offset, there is enough of a deduction to achieve your charitable intentions.

When you reach age 70 1/2, you are required by Federal tax law to take a minimum distribution from your retirement plans. There is a minimum,

but you can always take more. Because of this requirement, there was a provision in the tax law for those age 70 1/2 or older to give up to $100,000 tax free to charity. Essentially, the $100,000 of income was offset dollar for dollar by a $100,000 charitable deduction, therefore not requiring a taxpayer to report this on his or her Individual tax return. At the present time, this provision is no longer available for 2010, but this could be added to a tax law still to be enacted in 2010.

If you make a charitable bequest of a retirement plan at your death, there are major tax benefits. A retirement plan is included in your estate and is subject to Federal estate tax. Unless there are changes enacted, there is no estate tax in 2010 but there will be an estate tax in 2011 and in years thereafter. When distributions from your retirement plan are received by your beneficiaries, the distributions are

subject to Federal income tax. While there is a provision that gives your beneficiaries an itemized deduction for the estate tax

attributable to this distribution, there is still a DOUBLE TAX. One way this can be avoided is to leave a retirement plan to charity. Your estate gets a tax deduction for the charitable bequest and the charity pays no income tax on the distributions.

The use of your retirement plan for planned charitable giving to Ronald McDonald House Charities is particularly appropriate if you have enough other investment assets to fund your retirement. You may not need the required minimum

distributions when you reach age 70 1/2 and can reduce or avoid income tax by giving the distribution to charity. You can reduce your estate tax and avoid having your beneficiaries pay income tax on the distributions by leaving all or part of your retirement plan to charity.

over the years, Cash’s Scrap Metal and Iron has stood out as one of Ronald McDonald House Charities’ most consistent

and generous sponsors. Cash’s has raised thousands of dollars for RMHC since becoming involved more than a decade ago, and their employees have become familiar faces at our events and programs.

Stu Block, president of Cash’s Scrap Metal, has been with the company for the entirety of its partnership with RMHC. When considering the hundreds of charities in St. Louis needing help, Stu said Cash’s was initially drawn to RMHC because “we get to see our money and resources working immediately. We see it working every day.”

Cash’s hosts the enormously successful Tab Top Pandemonium fundraiser, which has brought in thousands of pounds of tab tops and raised over $140,000 for RMHC.

“All of our employees get involved with Tab Top and have really begun to champion that

cause,” Stu said. “It is wonderful to see how their energies and kind donations go to work the way they do, and the

event has produced great camaraderie for our employees.”

What has kept Stu and the employees at Cash’s motivated year after year is witnessing firsthand their donations in action.

“All you need to do is walk through the House once to see your impact. You can’t find a quicker return on your investment than that.” Outside of the work Cash’s does for Tab Top Pandemonium, Stu and other Cash’s employees come to the Houses to visit the families and cook dinners for them as part of the RMHC Dinner Program. Stu believes this gives everyone a “greater insight into the wonderful workings of the House.”

Additionally, Cash’s made a generous Capital Campaign gift of $50,000 toward the construction of the new Ronald McDonald House in West County.

After over a decade of giving, Cash’s is “glad we’re involved and every year we look forward to helping.”

It was 25 years ago when the relationship between Coldwell Banker Gundaker (CBG) and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis formed. Starting out

as CBG wanting to do something to help with team-building among their employees, they organized and hosted an annual dinner auction and in its first year raised more than $8,000. Now, CBG hosts a silent and live auction annually at its October sales rally that last year raised over $80,000. Over the years, agents, managers, employees, and executives planned book fairs, trivia

nights, and garage sales all to benefit RMHC. These fundraisers started to weave their way into the lives of CBG employees, where they no longer became a work activity, but rather, a personal contribution. “The relationship between RMHC and CBG really gives us a sense of community and family at CBG,” says Carole McCabe, Senior Vice President at Coldwell Banker Gundaker.

In addition to the company’s fundraising efforts, they are a corporate sponsor to our annual Cassidy Turley/Ronald McDonald House Charities Golf Tournament that helps raise hundreds of thousands of dollars. Events like these support our two Houses, three Family Rooms, and the construction and completion of the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House, opening September 29th, 2010.

In 2005 RMHC created the Heart and Sole Award in honor of Coldwell Banker Gundaker and their 3,000 plus agents who supported this organization for over 20 years. The award is given to recognize a local company who emulates CBG’s long-term commitment and generosity to RMHC. Gateway Distribution was last year’s recipient of the award for their dedication and support. CBG genuinely cares about RMHC and always strives to keep event costs low so the charity can continue to provide a “home-away-from-home”. “RMHC is the ‘House that Love Built’ and CBG is about putting people in homes. It all ties together and we are so proud to be associated with a great organization” Carole said.

The 2010 CBG auction will take place on Tuesday, October 19th, and is open to the public.

Families enjoyed a great day of fun

and games after dropping off tab tops for RMHC, May 1, 2010. With everyone’s help, we collected more than 14,280 pounds of tab tops! That’s more than 20 million tabs and 2 million more than last year!

A special thank you goes out to Cash’s Scrap Metal and Iron for once again matching the tab top donations at the event and for being a long-time friend of RMHC of Metro St. Louis.

Collecting tab tops is a no-cost way to help the House year-round. Help us go green by collecting your tabs in a

home-made container and save the date for May 7, 2011, for the next Tab Top Pandemonium!

ISC Contracting celebrated the 11th Anniversary of its "Day of Beautfication" with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis on April 24th. ISC employees and their families completed several construction projects, both large and small,

at the two Houses, on a Saturday designated as ISC Day. Some of the tasks included: constructing a new storage room in the lower level of apartment building B, repairing hand railings on the front of the East house, installing new shower doors, building and installing shelving at both Houses, and converting a lower level bathroom into a janitorial room. The contributions of nearly 40 volunteers and donated materials made these much needed projects complete. We thank ISC for their tremendous and ongoing support over the years.

Since the spring of 2007, the quilters of Lutheran Senior Services Breeze Park have have donated more than 200 quilts to RMHC of Metro St. Louis. Gloria Kersten and eight of her friends gather each week to laugh, tell stories, and create quilts. Pictured: Vi Boyd, Mae Thompkins, Gloria Kersten, and Elsie Fruend.

2010 HBA President Sean Flower of Flower & Fendler, Inc. and Home Builders Charitable Foundation board member Harold Burkemper of First Construction of St. Charles presented a $7,500 donation to Dan Harbaugh, president of RMHC.
