2010 Census DataA Review• Determine apportionment of the U.S. House of

Representatives• Used for congressional and legislative

redistricting• County and city governments use census data

to redraw the boundaries of local political subdivisions including county councils

• Affects the allocation of more than $400 billion in federal funding per year to local, state and tribal governments

Redistricting and the

5-year ACS Estimates

• ACS 5- year estimates will contain demographics for current state legislative districts• Legislators will see recent data for their districts

for the first time since those districts were drawn

• The Block Group data everyone wants may be staggered on an FTP release, a short time after the ACS 5-year release.

We’re Nearly Done

• P.L. 94-171 redistricting data files are delivered to all states - - no later than March 31, 2011

• Maps and block assignment files released Spring 2011

• Advanced group quarters data released in May 2011 via FTP

• Block group data from the ACS released via FTP a short time after the release of the 5-year estimates

• Currently we are collecting the home district / capital district addresses for official recipients including governors and legislative leaders

• Challenges• Time spread of deliveries• Changes resulting from elections

• 6,315 legislative elections

• Only MS, VA, NJ and LA without elections this November

• Timing of leadership determination• We must secure names / addresses of

these folks in advance of deliveries

delivered in a non-partisan manner• Therefore, we make the following

Redistricting Data DeliveryNew

• As we ship data to each state we will simultaneously issue an alert to all land- based American Indian Reservations, Alaska Native Village Statistical Areas, Alaska Native Regional Corporations, Oklahoma Tribal Statistical Areas.

• Letters will be sent with a link to our Redistricting Data Program home page, where we will post URLs to the data products that are released - - details in progress

• RDO will confirm bi-partisan receipt Tuesday thru Friday

• DADS will deploy data onto the American FactFinder for immediate public access following confirmation and within 24 hours Wednesday through Saturday
