“My best BC softball memory was when we played Maryland last year. The game was scoreless until the top of the 11th inning when Blair Destito hit a two-run homerun, and we won the game 2-1. It was a great game to play in, and the team really came together to get the win.” - Taylor Peyton ‘10

“My best BC softball memory happened last season when my parents flew over to Boston to watch us play for the first time that year against NC State. I hit the walk-off homerun in the 9th inning over the left field fence right where my mom was standing. It was the first homerun she’s seen me hit in my BC career. It was awesome to watch her and my dad hold it up and cheer as I ran the bases.” - Dani Weir ‘10

“My best BC softball memory was my freshman year, our first year in the ACC, beating NC State in the first round of the tournament. No one expected us to beat the number one seed but we fought hard, and came out with the win. After the game I remember coach telling us that was the first ACC tournament win for Boston College, and that in itself was a great accomplishment for us.” - Danielle Pandolfo ‘10

“My best BC softball memory is beating NC State at the ACC Championship tournament my freshman year. They were the defending champs and we were definitely the underdogs, but we were able to beat them and knock them out of the tournament. That win was truly a team effort, and I will never forget the rush that I felt after that game.” - Amy Tunstall ‘10

The 2010 Boston College softball team will take the field this season as one of the most talented and experienced teams the Heights has seen in quite some time. The team will be led by head coach Jen Finley who is entering her 15th year as head coach of the Eagles. Finley returns almost all of her players from last season’s team which includes the return of seven starters on offense, and two starting pitchers from last year.

The Eagles will also get an extra boost with the return of 2008 ALL-ACC second baseman Renee Ramos who missed all of last season due to injury. “We are really excited to have her back on the field with us this year,” Finley said. “She is a potential All-American, and she gives us great leadership on and off the field.”

Boston College is loaded with upperclassmen this year as the team will feature eight seniors and five juniors so coach Finley has set some high goals for the team this season.

“One of our goals this season is to be one of the top teams in the Northeast,” Finley said. “We’re also looking to be one of the top four teams in the highly competitive ACC this year as well.” Last season, the top three teams in the ACC made the NCAA Tournament. “Our main goal this season without a doubt is to get back to the NCAA Tournament, and with this group of girls I think are chances of accomplishing that are very good.” “We haven’t been there in a few years, and that’s what the team has been working hard for this fall and all offseason,” Finley said.

“I think the team played well this fall, but at the same time we used this fall season to test a lot of different things out,” Finley said “We didn’t play as many games as we normally do, but the competition between each other was really great and that will help us this spring.” “A player that really stood out in my mind this fall was Dani Weir.” “She played very solid offensively and defensively throughout the fall, and I look forward to that carrying over into the spring,” Finley said.

The team elected seniors Danielle Pandolfo, Renee Ramos and Amy Tunstall as captains for this season. Under their guidance, the Eagles have been productive in the preseason and head into the spring with a lot of momentum.

Now, the task for the Eagles is to meet, and exceed, all expectations this season as coach Finley has set the bar at an all-time high as the Eagles will look to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003.

PITCHINGThe pitching staff will continue to be the strength of the Eagles this season with the return of two starters from last year, and the addition of a talented newcomer Nicole D’Argento.

Senior Taylor Peyton and junior Allison Gage will shoulder most of the load once again this season. This pair of talented right-handers is no stranger to a demanding schedule as they combined for 87 appearances in 2008, the most of any pitching duo in BC history, and 63 appearances last season.

Senior Taylor Peyton begins her fourth campaign for the Eagles after finishing last season with a team-high 10 wins to go along with a career-best 2.54 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 32 appearances. Peyton improved in nearly every pitching category last season compared to her sophomore season, and coach Finley looks forward to a solid senior year for Peyton.

“Last year, she was definitely our go-to pitcher,” Finley said of Peyton. “She’s a great leader, and when her energy is up the team feeds off her so she is an excellent asset to our staff.”

Junior Allison Gage returns for her third season to compete with Peyton to be the team ace this year. Gage has been a wins machine so far in her BC career as she has already accumulated 26 wins in only two seasons. Gage finished last year with a 7-13 record and a 3.23 ERA in 31 appearances. Even though her sophomore season was a little bit of a let down compared to her record breaking freshman campaign coach Finley knows what Gage is capable of.

“Allison had a great freshman season and a pretty good sophomore season as well,” Finley said. “She has an unlimited amount of potential, and I believe that she can be one of the best pitchers in the ACC this year.”

The third pitcher from last season sophomore Morgan Kidd who finished with a 4.40 ERA, two saves and 69 strikeouts last year will be redshirted this season.

The two veterans will be complimented by freshman Nicole D’Argento, who enters her rookie season after a standout career at Ashland High School in Ashland, Mass. In her scholastic career, D’Argento had a career record of 62-0, and was named the Massachusetts Softball Gatorade Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009.

“We brought in Nicole, who is a little different from the other two,” Finley said. “She brings a little more fire to the mound, and she has no fear out there which is amazing especially for a freshman.”

“All three of these pitchers are different from each other yet they all posses superior talent so they will all get their innings,” Finley said. “It is not clear who are number one starter will be this season, but in a way we are lucky to have this as a problem because all of them have number one type stuff.”

In addition Peyton and D’Argento will play in the field, and hit, when they aren’t pitching. Peyton will play first base or outfield, and D’Argento can play either middle infield position as well. “This rotation is one of the best groups we’ve had in some time, and their success will be that of the team as well,” said Finley.

INFIELdBoston College will have all four starters back on the infield this season from 2009, including second baseman Renee Ramos. The infielders also provided the bulk of the offense last season for the Eagles as they accounted for 24 of the 33 homeruns Boston College hit in 2009.

Senior Dani Weir will be starting her fourth consecutive year in the infield moving from first base to third base this season. Weir led the team in homeruns and total bases last season with eight and 68, respectively. “Dani has a great glove, and will bring a lot of leadership to the infield,” Finley said. “She is also a great hitter with power who can use all parts of the field.”

Weir will be backed up by sophomore Brittany Wilkins and Peyton.

Wilkins had a standout freshman campaign as she led the team in doubles with nine, and also led the team in walks with 31. The 31 walks by Wilkins last season was a new Boston College record for the most base on balls by one player in a single season. “Brittany has an outstanding feel for the game,” Finley said. “She has great plate discipline, and can play multiple positions for us.”

Junior Rene Delagrammaticas will return as the starting shortstop this season which will allow her to continue her impressive 113 consecutive-games started streak for the Eagles. Delagrammaticas led the team in hits last season with 45, and she also led the Eagles in stolen bases with 10. “She held the position last year and she should keep that position this year,” Finley said. “Rene has great range and good speed so she makes a lot of big plays for us out there.”

Delagrammaticas will be backed up by D’Argento.

Senior Renee Ramos will return from injury to take back her starting second baseman position that she held in 2008. In 2008 she was named to the All-ACC Team for good reason as she led the team batting .341 with 10 homeruns and 45 RBI’s. “It will be good to have Renee back on the field this year,” Finley said. “We missed her bat and her leadership last season.”

Ramos will be backed up by senior Blair Destito.

Destito started at second base last season filling in for Ramos, and hit .240 with five homeruns. “Blair has an excellent glove, and can give us some pop in the lineup as well,” Finley said.”

The first base position is the one infield position that will see multiple people getting starts there. The players that coach Finley is leaning towards to fill that role is Destito, Peyton, junior Gemma Ypparila and Wilkins. “All three of these players are hard workers, and are more than capable to fill this position, Finley said.”

Senior Amy Tunstall and Wilkins will split the work behind the plate this season for the Eagles. Tunstall led the team in batting average last season at .283, and was also solid in the field as she only made one error all season. “Amy brings great leadership and stability back there for us, and I expect her to have another solid season,” Finley said.

OUTFIELdThe starting outfield for Boston College this season will feature a mixture of eight different players that could see time at all three positions.

The one position that is solidified for the Eagles, according to coach Finley, is centerfield. Junior Alison Kooistra will see most of the playing time at that position this season. Kooistra batted .241 with 33 hits and scored 17 runs last season.

“Alison has good speed, and a great glove, so she will make a lot of plays out there for us this season,” Finley said.

She will be backed up by Allie Thunstrom and Lizzy Ploen. Thunstrom is also a star hockey player for BC, while Ploen earned All-City and All-Conference honors during her high school career.

The left field position will be a battle between two seniors and a sophomore Danielle Pandolfo, Lisa Omoto and Ali Lynette-Krech. Pandolfo, who returns from a knee injury last season, looks to have a leg up on the starting job as of right now. Lynette-Krech, who competed on the Canadian National Softball Team, and Omoto will see their fair share of time in the outfield for the Eagles as well.

In right field the time will be split between junior Carolyn Jones and freshman Maria Pandolfo.

SCHEdULEThe team will compete in 55 contests this season, and this year’s slate of games promises to be every bit as challenging as last year’s. The team kicks off the season with four tournaments in February and March. Three of the tournaments will be held in Florida, while the fourth will be played in Texas.

With a schedule that includes six teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season, and a full conference slate in their fifth season in the ACC, the Eagles have a tough road in front of them if they want to achieve their ultimate goal of getting back to the NCAA’s.

The first game of the 2010 season will be played on February 19 against Centenary College in Corpus Christi, TX. The Eagles 2010 home opener is on March 24 against Central Connecticut State University.

Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor.

However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency.

Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 57th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it.

Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 116 national championships, including 64 in women’s competition and 52 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 160 times in men’s competition and 91 times in women’s action. Since softball became a league-sponsored sport in 1992, ACC teams have produced 51 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Americans, including three during the 2009 season in Florida State’s Sarah Hamilton, North Carolina’s Danielle Spaulding, and Virginia Tech’s Jenna Rhodes. Two All-Americans—Jessica van der Linden of Florida State and Angela Tincher of Virginia Tech—were named national player of the year in 2004 and 2008, respectively. Both van der Linden and Tincher were named USA Softball National Player of the Year and were recipients of the Honda Award, presented by The Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards.

On the national stage, current ACC teams have appeared in 48 NCAA championships, including 33 since 2000, and eight College World Series. In 2009, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina earned berths in the NCAA Softball Championship, with the Yellow Jackets advancing to the super regionals before being defeated by eventual NCAA champion Washington. Additionally, four ACC teams have made appearances in the NCAA championship four times over the course of the last five seasons. Florida State has appeared in seven College World Series, including four as a member of the ACC and its last appearance in 2004, while Virginia Tech made its lone CWS appearance in 2008.

The Seminoles have established their program as one of the premier in the nation with NCAA championship appearances in 22 of the last 24 seasons, and a share of 10 ACC championships. Florida State won the first two ACC

aCC softball

titles in 1992 and 1993, and claimed eight league crowns from 1992-2000, including six straight from 1995-2000. Georgia Tech (2002, 05, 09) and Virginia Tech (2007-08) have each won multiple titles.

Academically, the ACC has found comparable success to the achievements it has made in the athletic arena. In 2009, Florida State’s Carlyn Wynn, Georgia Tech’s Whitney Haller, and Virginia Tech’s Jenna Rhodes were tabbed College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America. The trio joined an extensive list of Academic All-Americans, in addition to the more than 20 named as NFCA All-American Scholar-Athletes.

2008-09 IN rEVIEW The 2008-09 academic year saw league teams capture five national team titles and 16 individual NCAA crowns. In all, the ACC has won 48 national team titles over the last 13 years and has won two or more NCAA titles in 27 of the past 29 years. A total of 130 ACC teams placed in NCAA postseason competition in 2008-09. League teams compiled a 139-84-1 (.637) mark in NCAA championship competition. In addition, the ACC had 198 student-athletes earn first team All-America honors this past year. Overall, the league had 266 first-, second-, or third-team All-Americans and the ACC produced nine national Players of the Year and five national Coach of the Year honorees. A total of 88 teams finished their respective seasons ranked in the Top 25 poll, including 33 teams ranked in the Top 10 and six teams that held the nation’s top spot.

Jen FinleyHEADCOACH

FifteenthSeason

Jennifer Finley is entering her 15th season as the head softball coach at Boston College. Since coming to the Heights, Finley has developed the BC program into a nationally competitive team. In her tenure, she has become one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation. While at Boston College she has led the Eagles to two Big East Tournament Championships, one regular season Big East Co-Championship and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the first-ever at-large bid in program history. Heading up the 2003 Big East Coaching Staff of the Year, she led the Eagles to a 316-241-1 overall record in ten years as a member of the Big East Conference. In her 16 years as a head coach, Finley has amassed a career record of 457-373-1, averaging 29 wins per season.

Last year, the Eagles battled through a number of injuries throughout the season to finish 18-33 overall, with a 3-15 ACC record. In 2008, playing a 63-game season, the longest in the history of the program, the Eagles recorded a 32-31 overall record, with a 7-14 record in the ACC. Team and individual records were shattered as the Eagles navigated a challenging schedule which included nine teams that would eventually earn bids into the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Finley led the Eagles to a sixth place finish in the conference, including a win over Maryland in the ACC Tournament. The Eagles improved their win total by 17 games from the previous season.

In 2007, Finley’s Eagles posted an overall record of 15-31. They took a 4-16 conference record into the ACC Tournament. The Eagles came in as the seventh-seed squaring off against the defending league champions from North Carolina State. Finley’s team played their game of the year, stunning the Wolfpack 2-0 to become the talk of the tournament. The win marked a historic first ACC Tournament victory for Boston College and signified yet another step forward for Finley’s program. In 2006, the Eagles went 22-26 overall with a 6-15 ACC record in their first trip through the competitive conference.

In 2005, Finley’s Eagles posted a 20-25 mark in their final Big East season.

In 2004, BC posted a 33-25 overall record. In addition, the squad posted an 11-9 Big East mark, finishing fourth in the conference.

In 2003, the Eagles put forth one of the most successful seasons in recent program history. With a 14-5 Big East mark, BC captured a share of the regular season championship. After being eliminated from the conference tournament, the team made the most of the post season as it secured the program’s first-ever at-large NCAA Tournament bid. As the six seed in the Tucson regional, BC went 2-2 before bowing out. In addition to her team’s success, Finley enjoyed some of her own as she collected her career 300th victory on April 13, 2003 with a 9-0 blanking of Virginia Tech. In 2002, the Eagles posted a 26-26 overall mark and an 11-9 conference record. The team produced three All-Conference second team selections and one player -- Cara Blumfield -- became the school’s first All-American and was ranked among the nation’s top 10 batters all season with her .445 mark.

Finley led the 2001 Eagles to a 31-24 record and the third-highest win total in school history. BC placed Jen Asbury on the All-Big East first team and both Tekae Malandris and Jacqui Goodchild on the league’s all-rookie squad. Malandris earned the school’s second-lowest earned run average ever (1.32) and struck out 166 batters. Finley led the Eagles to a 20-25 season in 2000, good for a third-place tie in the Big East after surviving the season without several of the team’s top players lost to injury. The Eagles earned the fourth seed in the Big East Tournament, which they hosted for the fourth time. Boston College placed two players on the All-Big East First Team. Ryan earned Big East Rookie of the Year honors as well, breaking the conference’s single-season strikeout record by fanning 106 batters in 15 league games.

In 1999, Finley picked up her 200th career coaching victory in a doubleheader sweep of Fairfield on April 25. The Eagles, who went 27-20 and finished third in the Big East, had two players named to the Louisville Slugger Northeast All-Region First Team. Mary Dietz earned All-Big East first team honors for the third straight year.

In 1998, Finley’s club wrapped up its second consecutive Big East Tournament championship and its second NCAA Tournament appearance. Five Boston College players earned All-Big East Conference honors, and Jennifer Perrotta was named Big East Rookie of the Year. For her efforts, Finley earned Big East Coach of the Year honors. The Eagles broke the school record for wins in a season (38), and won the Big East North Division title for the first time in school history. A LOOK BACK AT THE 2009 SEASONThe 2009 Boston College softball team wrapped up its fifth year in the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. The Eagles played a very challenging 51 game schedule going 18-33 overall. Last season’s schedule included 11 teams that would eventually go on to earn bids into the 2009 NCAA Tournament – Florida A&M, Purdue, Boston University, Massachusetts, Radford, Chattanooga, Portland State, Tennessee, Florida State, North Carolina and Georgia Tech. Angela Pandolfo was the lone senior that had her BC career ended after last season. She was a captain last year, and a three-year starter.

KOOISTrA’S BIG mOmENTOn April 16 sophomore outfielder Alison Kooistra hit a walk-off solo homerun over the centerfield wall to give the Eagles a dramatic 7-6 victory over Harvard. The homerun capped off a huge comeback by BC as they were trailing 5-0 by the middle of the third inning, but managed to come all the way back and walk off with the win.

EAGLES ExCEL IN THE CLASSrOOmJunior first baseman Dani Weir, sophomore second baseman Rene Delagrammaticas and freshman pitcher Morgan Kidd were all named to the 2009 All-ACC Softball Academic Team. Weir and Kidd, who are communications and finance majors, were first time recipients of the award. Delagrammaticas, who is a nursing major, received the honor for a second consecutive year.

WILKINS EmErGES AS OFFENSIVE THrEATFreshman third baseman Brittany Wilkins had a standout freshman season at the plate. Wilkins finished the 2009 season ranking second on the team in homeruns and RBI’s with five and 23. She also showed excellent plate discipline for a freshman as she set a new Boston College record for most walks in a single-season with 31. Those walks, and consistent hitting, also earned her the 10th highest on-base percentage in BC history at .416.

BOSTON COLLEGE mUSCLES UPLast season the Eagles belted 33 balls out of the park. The 33 homeruns is the fifth most homeruns by a team in Boston College history. Dani Weir hit eight of the teams 33 homeruns, and her eight homeruns puts her in a tie for the seventh most hit in a single season in school history.

shea field

With a sweeping view of the Boston skyline and neighboring the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, Shea Field – the home of Eagles softball -- is nestled on a corner of the Boston College campus.

Refurbished prior to the 2000 season, the field hosted the Big East Tournament that same year. Under the care of Scott McCoy and the rest of the athletics buildings and grounds crew, the field is tended to on a daily basis. Covered and protected during the winter months, the field maintains its excellent playing surface for the start of the season. The field’s dimensions are 195 feet to left field, 210 feet to center and 195 feet to right field

In 2001, Shea Field was honored with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association/Turface Grounds Crew Field Maintenance Field Award for the Northeast Region.

In the spring, the team plays its home games at Shea Field. With the students coming out to catch a doubleheader or split an afternoon between a softball and baseball game, the Eagles enjoy a strong fan base. Local residents often pack the stands to catch the softball team take the field against some of the nation’s best competition.

The field has lived up to its billing as a championship caliber facility as Boston College has hosted three conference tournaments.

Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of Boston’s Irish immigrants. It was the first institution of higher education to be founded in the city of Boston. Today, it is one of the foremost universities in the nation, with a coeducational enrollment of 14,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Boston College has drawn students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries.

Boston College has grown not just in size, but also in stature and diversity. Today, it is ranked among the top 34 national universities by US News & World Report. Its Graduate School of Social Work is listed among the nation’s top 15, also by US News, while the graduate programs of its Lynch School of Education are among the top 20 and its Connell School of Nursing and Law School are among the top 30. In addition, eight undergraduate programs of the Carroll School of Management placed among the top 10 in the nation according to BusinessWeek, with accounting placing first in its category. Boston College is among the nation’s most selective universities, with nearly 30,000 applications received for its 2,250-member Class of 2013, and is numbered among the top American private research universities.

After more than a century of growth and evolution, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students to develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compassion to use those talents in the service of others.

“Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers an education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith,” writes Reverend William P. Leahy, SJ, who assumed the presidency of Boston College in 1996. “We believe that Boston College provides a transforming experience for young men and women.”

A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the individual, is the faculty’s dedication to teaching. BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education, while the University’s overall commitment to teaching has been ranked among the nation’s top 20, also by US News & World Report.

A Boston College education focuses not only on intellectual development, but also on personal, spiritual and physical development. Students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help others in need, whether in Boston or Belize. Each year, more than 5,000 undergraduates give some 375,000 hours of community service in the Boston area, while more than 650 students trade vacation for service during Spring Break. Nearly 2,000 students take part in retreats and spiritual formation activities annually.

Today, the Boston College motto “ever to excel” also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University’s focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 31 men’s and women’s varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, and annually has one of the highest graduation rates in Division IA.

BC offers a wide variety of resources that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; Center for Ignatian Spirituality; Center for Catholic Education; Church in the 21st Century Center; Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life; Center for Human Rights and International Justice; Center for Christian-Jewish Learning; Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics; Center on Wealth and Philanthropy; Center for Retirement Research; Sloan Center on Aging and Work; Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Educational Policy; TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center; Center for International Higher Education; Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; Robsham Theater Arts Center; McMullen Museum of Art; Center for Child, Family and Community Partnerships; Center for Corporate Citizenship; Center for Work and Family; Center for Irish Programs; Urban Ecology Institute and Weston Observatory.

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. Last year, 363 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten. DeFilippo initiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a total renovation of Conte Forum, including a new sound system, floor and video boards, new soccer, field hockey and lacrosse facilities on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Stadium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months. DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for general University use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renovation Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports. DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College Athletics contributed $18 million in 2008-09, the third-highest total in BC Athletics history and 50 percent more than just four years ago. The 4,600 donors to the Flynn Fund prove that there is strength in numbers; nearly 700 alumni, parents and friends have given to BC Athletics for at least 10 consecutive years.

Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need. In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2008-09 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 10th consecutive bowl game and made a second consecutive trip to the ACC Championship Game. In 2008, the men’s ice hockey team won its third national championship, and the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed. From 1993-97, DeFilippo served as director of athletics at Villanova University. He served as Associated Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky from 1987-93, Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg from 1984-87 and Director of Administrative Services at Vanderbilt University from 1983-84. His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (1980-82), which included the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From 1975-79, he was offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Conference championships, 1978-79. In 1973-74, he was graduate assistant football coach for the University of Tennessee, coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters as a quarterback in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in 1974. DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children – Christine Eldred (recently married to Matt Eldred), a guidance counselor; John, assistant quarterbacks coach for the New York Jets, and Mary, marketing and sales coordinator for Fenway Sports Group.
