The First Tee Annual Review | 2010

The First Tee Founding Partners have provided support and guidance to The First Tee since its inception in 1997. Each partner - The Masters Tournament, LPGA, PGA of America, PGA TOUR

and USGA - believes in The First Tee’s mission and has dedicated resources to further the organization’s reach. Their contributions include significant funding to The First Tee through charitable donations and grants; providing promotional opportunities through the donation of television and radio public service time; and consistently delivering the highest quality golf and life skills training by PGA and LPGA professionals. The support of these organizations has contributed greatly to The First Tee’s success in reaching young people with golf and character education that continues to positively impact their lives.

R

As Founding Corporate Partner of The First Tee, Shell Oil Company

has provided resources and leadership to support the development of this youth service organization. Shell’s involvement and support of The First Tee’s mission has led the way for other individuals, corporations and organizations to provide ongoing financial support to The First Tee and its chapters.

THE “WHY”

One in four public school children drop out before they finish high school. For African-Americans and Hispanics, the graduation rate could be as low as 50%.(1)

The economic repercussions of the graduation crisis could hardly be more severe. More than 1 million students did not graduate from high school in 2010; the lost lifetime earnings for this class of dropouts alone will total $337 billion.(2)

Only four in 10 young people participate in high-quality activities that teach them needed skills, how to form lasting relationships with others, and how to make big decisions.(3)

Almost 80% of children report feeling stressed each month. One in four say they feel stressed at least once each day.(3)

60% of 10- to 21-year-olds say their schools should give them more preparation for the real world.(3)

One-third of young people say they lack adult role models who volunteer and help others.(3)

94% of young people want to help make the world a better place.(3)

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African- American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese.(4)

If the obesity problem is not addressed, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and asthma.(4)

The most important investment society can make is in its young people as they represent 100% of our future. There is little doubt that young

people today face many obstacles in life that are more challenging than previous generations. Pressures from peers, school, family and finances can be overwhelming. The First Tee helps young people learn behaviors and life skills that help them confront, manage and work through the many pressures life brings their way. It’s proven.* Participation in The First Tee Life Skills Experience (delivered at chapters and other programming locations) enhances their ability to manage emotions, set short- and long-term goals and effectively resolve conflicts. Research has also shown that our programs provide the foundation for the acquisition and internalization of The First Tee Nine Core Values - honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. Our efforts now go well beyond the work at our chapters. In more than 4,000 elementary schools across the United States, The First Tee National School Program is introducing students to the lifelong physical activity of golf and those same Nine Core Values during physical education classes. As The First Tee embarks on its next five year plan (2011-2015) and reflects on the previous five, we couldn’t be more convinced that our mission is right on the mark. Positively impacting the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf is making a difference with today’s young people. Through 2010, we’ve reached 4.7 million. And we’re far from done as we plan to grow that number to 10 million more over the coming years. The First Tee truly is more than a game, and the following pages offer evidence of our impact … on golf courses, in schools and on military installations in the United States and beyond, wherever young people can be found.

Joe Louis Barrow, Jr. Chief Executive Officer, The First Tee

As World Golf Foundation chairman in 2010, I was pleased to witness The First Tee’s impressive achievements using golf as a tool to teach

our young people the values inherent in the game. An example is the outreach being done in schools through the National School Program which introduces millions of students and their families to golf and these values. PGA of America is a Founding Partner of The First Tee. As such, I am proud of the fact that close to 700 PGA of America members are directly involved at The First Tee chapters as board members, executive directors, coaches, mentors and volunteers. Together, we are supporting a youth development initiative that is making a positive impact on our society. Thank you for your interest and investment in The First Tee.

Our Messages

“The one single thing that The First Tee does is that they make you feel good about yourself, no matter

who you are or what your background is. The First Tee has helped me feel good about myself.” -Dillon McDonald, The First Tee of Eagle County

* “2003-2008 Longitudinal Effects of The First Tee Life Skills Programs on Positive Youth Development” study, led by University of Minnesota’s Maureen R. Weiss, Ph.D.

Page 4: 2010 Annual Review

• Marking a significant capacity milestone in The First Tee history, the network reached almost 2.4 million young people with its chapter, school and military programs during the calendar year.

• The First Tee National School Program grew to 4,000 schools with a national average of 500 students per school. As part of this growth, more than 650 new elementary school teachers were professionally trained to introduce the lifelong sport of golf and The First Tee Nine Core Values to their students.

• Despite the economy, chapters kept revenues stable in 2010 and increased their overall net income while focusing a larger percentage of their funding towards chapter programs and outreach. The chapter network has not posted a consolidated net loss in any year since 2003, which was the year the home office began tracking this metric.

2010 Milestones

• A comprehensive planning process that included consideration of all major issues facing today’s youth resulted in the development of The First Tee’s Phase IV Strategic Plan, which will serve as the organization’s

compass over the next five years, 2011-2015.

• Recognizing the challenges young people face in making healthy choices, The First Tee sought expert partners to develop a framework for curriculum to highlight positive physical, emotional and social behaviors for young people. The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits will formally launch in 2011 with World Golf Hall of Fame member Annika Sorenstam as its spokesperson.

• The First Tee extended its mentoring program, formally training 200 volunteer mentors at 41 chapters across the country. The program, made possible by funding from the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS), teaches mentors how

to effectively guide young people in all aspects of their lives.

“G rowing up, I never thought that becoming a professional anything would be possible.”

Those were the honest thoughts of Austin Landis seven years ago … before he joined The First Tee of Greater Portland. Now, he considers the chapter’s leaders and other participants as his second family. During his childhood, Austin’s father spent most of his time in prison and his mother struggled to raise three boys while working full-time at minimum wage jobs. One of his brothers has also battled with addiction for years. “I could be in a drug rehab center for all I know,” Austin admitted. “Addictions have run in my family. I’m pretty sure I’m the first in my family in the last two decades not to struggle with addiction at all … well, except for maybe golf.” Initially, he was insecure about joining The First Tee, but after his first lesson, golf became his passion – the thing that motivates him to succeed in life. “He had no self esteem when we started here,” said his mom, Holly. “He was always picked on. But he grew up and became a man here. He became a person to be respected and revered.” During his freshman year, Austin began winning local junior golf events and during that summer, his father returned home and traveled with him as he participated in state competitions. “I had a marvelous summer. My dad was right there by my side as I was winning really prestigious golf tournaments and I was finally getting to know him,” he said. Unfortunately, Austin’s dad was put back in jail in the spring of his junior year. “I was so depressed,” he remembers. “I was upset beyond belief. But, The First Tee of Greater Portland (The Children’s Course) helped me out. I can always go there and find someone to talk to and play golf. It’s like a second home.”

Austin was selected to represent his chapter in The First Tee Open at Pebble Beach in 2010. It was another example of his perseverance. “Austin stands for everything we believe in and try to make possible for our youth,” said Keely Porter, board chair for The First Tee of Greater Portland. “Through his experience with The First Tee, Austin has learned how to persevere. He has used great judgment in making positive lifestyle choices and he has confidence that his future will be better than his past.” Austin has maintained a 3.0 GPA. He has more than seven top-five finishes in his high school golf matches and looks forward to attending college after his high school graduation this year. “The First Tee taught me to set goals so I can accomplish my dreams,” he says proudly. “Seeing how [Austin] has developed and become so strong … he sees people that are hurting and he’s right there, talking to them, loving them and giving them support and encouragement,” reflects his mom. “That’s invaluable. I did the right thing bringing him here. I did my job.”

Reaching a cumulative 4.7 million young people since its inception in 1997, The First Tee successfully closed the books on a five year strategic plan December 31, 2010. The overarching goals for “Phase III 2006-2010” were to build on The First Tee’s reach and influence through the National School Program; strengthen chapters’ abilities to impact young people through a focused advanced adult education program; and make adjustments to the curriculum to continuously improve the learning process. Key performance objectives were established for all primary aspects of the business to effectively measure the network’s progress. In all cases, goals were met or exceeded.

“Before I joined The First Tee, I was very quiet and scared of meeting new people.

Through The First Tee I have learned to become a leader and role model.” - Gavin Parker, The First Tee of Richmond & Chesterfield

• Further solidifying The First Tee’s relevancy in major cities across the United States, operations were established in 88 of the top 100 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs).

• The First Tee certified 531,153 young people through the Life Skills Experience, which is the in-depth programming delivered through chapters. Independent research confirmed young people who experience this programming learn life skills and transfer them to other areas of their lives.

• More than 500 trained golf professionals participated in The First Tee’s extensive coach training program to earn various levels of certification.

• The First Tee National School Program expanded to 512 school districts (nearly four times the original goal) and to more than 4,000 schools.

• The First Tee established programming in each of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia.

“The First Tee taught me to persevere; to never let anyone

or anything stop me from making more of myself.” - Valentina De Fex, The First Tee of Dallas

* “2003-2008 Longitudinal Effects of The First Tee Life Skills Programs on Positive Youth Development” study, led by University of Minnesota’s Maureen R. Weiss, Ph.D.

• Contributing to the game’s growth, The First Tee learned that more than 250,000 participants of The First Tee play golf regularly and 70% of young people entering the program are new to the game. The First Tee has produced nearly 9,300 high school golfers and more than 1,700 college golfers since its inception.

• The First Tee created relationships with seven Native American communities and two additional international locations: Greater Vancouver, British Columbia and Manchester, United Kingdom.

• The First Tee funded an independent longitudinal research study to fully understand if and how its programs are impacting young people. Conducted by experts in the arena of youth development through sport, the study* confirmed that youth involved in The First Tee Life Skills Experience learn and use life skills on the golf course and transfer these skills to other areas of their lives. The study also revealed The First Tee’s ability to impart core values on youth.

• Thanks to the commitment of its founding and corporate partners, The First Tee established more than 50 national opportunities for participants to further their life skills, leadership and golf experiences.

• Continuing its commitment to promoting advanced education, The First Tee designated 254 Scholars and funded 90 scholarships worth more than $640,000.

• Through a Congressional appropriation, The First Tee partnered with the Department of Defense from 2009-2011, launching programs on 120 military institutions (100 domestic and 20 international).

• Recognizing the importance of immediate on-course exposure to the game for young players, The First Tee created and rolled

out a new program level, PLAYer, that also aids in retention and progression.

In 2010, World Sport Chicago, The First Tee of Greater Chicago and Chicago Public Schools joined forces to create a plan to expose more

students to The First Tee National School Program. The group developed a strategy to reach 120 of the 400+ elementary schools in Chicago Public Schools over a five-year period. Their ultimate goal is to have 10% (roughly 6,000) of those young people transition to The First Tee of Greater Chicago, where they will be further impacted by the Life Skills Experience. “The challenge that many youth in our high risk urban communities face today is not only a lack of sports, but a lack of sports that help provide a positive direction,” said Scott Myers, executive director of World Sport Chicago. “The National School Program is a rare sports program that takes a very purposeful approach not only in teaching a sport but also in shaping the lives of young people. World Sport Chicago is excited to be part of growing this program in Chicago and through it, in strengthening the youth of our city.” The partnership will result in trained educators successfully introducing more than 60,000 young people to the game of golf and The First Tee Nine Core Values during physical education classes. Through this private/public partnership, the three organizations will each provide funding and look to create partnerships with other local corporations and foundations.

Focusing on Youth in Chicago

“The curriculum that The First Tee uses has helped me in many ways that you can’t really understand. I’ve learned to control my emotions, and channel all of my energy towards golfing, my education, and my everyday life. I believe I have

become a more mature, independent, and caring individual as a result of my involvement in The First Tee.” - Deloise Daniels, The First Tee of Southern Nevada

National School Program

“This program is important because it helps to fulfill our mission to develop students academically, mentally, physically, socially, emotionally and ethically,” said Calvin Davis, director of sports administration for Chicago Public Schools. “As a result of participation in this program we expect to see positive outcomes. It will make a contribution to the development of the whole child.” In 2010, the three organizations each provided more than $30,000 to jumpstart the effort, which was enough to sponsor the first 30 schools. The group targeted students in close proximity to The First Tee of Greater Chicago’s locations to reduce transportation costs, ensuring the majority of the funding would be used for the program itself. The plan also calls for developing a feeder program to the local high schools, creating golf teams in schools where none exist or improving the skills of the teams in schools with golf programs. In an effort to broaden the focus beyond public schools, Catholic schools will be included in the program because of existing relationships with The First Tee of Greater Chicago and World Sport Chicago. And they’re not done yet! The three organizations’ efforts to fund an additional 30 schools will include looking at ways to leverage heightened interest around the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill.

“Kianna began talking about things like college and golf, dad and golf, even family and golf, and I realized that this program was teaching my daughter more than golf skills. It was teaching her life skills.”

- Diandra Hilmo, military parent

Children of geographically separated National Guardsmen and Reservists were welcomed at chapters of The First Tee beginning

in 2010. These young people are participating in golf instruction combined with life skills education at no cost. The Guardsmen and Reservist program is part of The First Tee’s outreach to military families in the United States and overseas, which is being funded through a Congressional appropriation from 2009-2011. In addition to programming for children of Guardsmen and Reservists, The First Tee continued to reach and have a positive impact on the children of the United States Armed Forces through the chapter-based “Military Affi liate Program,” which offers The First Tee Life Skills Experience to 100 installations in the United States that

are in close proximity to chapters. Finally, The First Tee Nine Core Values Golf Program was launched on 20 overseas installations in 2010. Military personnel, who receive equipment, curriculum and online training, now have the ability to implement The First Tee life skills-based activities at any time and at any location on these installations. Each child reached through this program is participating with trained adults who offer progressive lesson plans that create a fun and safe learning environment. The curriculum fosters curiosity about the game of golf and teaches how the positive values inherent in the game can be used at home, in school and in other areas of everyday life.

Meet Kamio Espindola. At age 17, this A/B Honor Roll student is fi nishing her senior year of high school before heading to Mesa

Community College, where she has signed a letter of intent to play collegiate golf. Her father introduced her to the game at an early age. On average, she played once a month until 2006, when a friend invited her to participate in The First Tee of Phoenix. “When I started at The First Tee, I was very shy and kept to myself,” says Kamio, who is Ace-certifi ed. “Then I started going more often and became comfortable with all the other participants and fell in love with golf.” Today, she is outgoing, has a great sense of humor and is one of The First Tee of Phoenix’s most active members. “I think The First Tee has helped me become a more well-rounded person,” Kamio said. “Attending The First Tee’s national events including the Life Skills & Leadership Academy and The TORO Future Leaders Forum has given me a better appreciation for the game. What’s more, being recognized by leaders at The First Tee for overcoming adversity

“The lessons of setting long and short term goals that I have learned in The First Tee will follow me throughout my life. I know that setting these goals will be important when I leave college and enter the working world,

and thanks to the life lessons I have learned, I will be able to do so with confi dence.”

and using my leadership skills has added to my experiences. All of these opportunities would not have been possible without The First Tee.” Kamio loves the outdoors, socializing with The First Tee participants and volunteering with the program. “My favorite value from The First

Tee’s Nine Core Values is perseverance because I believe it teaches you to never give up,” she said. “Set your goals and climb the ladder. I like the idea of

trying until I can’t try anymore.” The First Tee has also taught her compassion. Kamio volunteers for the National Latino Peace Offi cers Association, where she works with the less fortunate minority youth. At school, she is a member of the Best Buddies Club, where she has been paired with Cory, a fellow student who is a paraplegic as the result of a tragic accident. Through her friendship with Cory, she hopes to inspire other young people to realize the importance of staying positive, regardless of the obstacles life may bring. Those at The First Tee of Phoenix are expecting great things to come in Kamio’s future. Knowing her, she will exceed those expectations.

The Power of a Relationship A lasting legacy

Many individuals, corporations and foundations have generously donated to The First Tee over

the years. Yet something about this particular gift was different. The morning of December 1, 2010, The First Tee’s chief executive Joe Louis Barrow, Jr. opened a letter and accompanying pledge payment from a Trustee. What surprised him was the Trustee from whom it came. Barrow knew that David Epstein was terminally ill. What he didn’t expect that morning was to receive a check along with a personal note signed by Mr. Epstein stating he wanted to make a payment on his pledge, as supporting The First Tee was very important to him. Mr. Epstein was a generous, charitable-minded individual who supported many organizations that are having a positive effect on the people in his hometown of Westport, Conn. and vicinity. He became a Trustee of The First Tee in 2006, and over the years grew increasingly passionate about its mission. Mr. Epstein saw the positive impact The First Tee was having in Connecticut and beyond, and genuinely believed in the concept of teaching life skills and imparting core values on young people through golf. David Epstein passed away on December 15th. His widow, Geri, knew her late husband felt supporting The First Tee was important. She has increased the original pledge to The First Tee substantially, allowing for construction to begin on a new learning center at The First Tee of Connecticut. Scheduled to be completed summer of 2012, The First Tee of Connecticut David & Geri Epstein Learning Center will be a place where young people will grow and develop through the proven programs at The First Tee for years to come. Additionally, Mrs. Epstein will be establishing a number of scholarships in her husband’s name for The First Tee participants to further their education in college over the coming years. “David was very impressed with the accomplishments of The First Tee,” said Mrs. Epstein. “It seemed like both enabling The First Tee of Connecticut to build a learning center, as well as establishing a national program for college scholarships would be a special way to honor David.”

The First Tee puts great emphasis on positive relationships throughout the organization. The positive reinforcement relationship model of The First Tee between a coach and

young person or an educator and a student has an enormous impact on that young person’s willingness to be open to what the adult has to share—about golf, and life. The value of positive relationships at The First Tee—and results to show for it—encouraged PwC to further support the youth development organization’s efforts. A Trustee since 2000, PwC expanded their support in 2010 by donating half of their paid commercial advertising time in golf programming to The First Tee. “Through staff, coaches, volunteers and mentors, young people involved in The First Tee learn positive life lessons that become the foundation for both personal and professional success,” said Bob Moritz, chairman and senior partner, PwC. “We believe in what The First Tee is doing and trust that additional exposure brings greater awareness and support to their effort.” Coach/participant, educator/student, mentor/mentee, volunteer/young person … these relationships matter. The First Tee supports the nurturing of these relationships by providing the highest level of training for the adults involved in its programming. Quality of the training program and the adults’ commitment to making a lasting impact in each person’s life has resulted in young people with greater confidence, a desire to act responsibly and the ability to persevere when times get tough. For an organization like PwC, investing in youth development and education is part of its corporate culture. For years PwC has supported The First Tee Scholars by inviting select participants to attend an Executive Business Forum where young people interact with and learn from PwC executives. The First Tee’s relationship with PwC, made possible through PwC’s involvement in THE PLAYERS Championship as a Proud Partner, has provided hundreds of participants from Northeast Florida the ability to experience the tournament in unique ways. PwC’s support of The First Tee is a shining example of how corporate America cares about today’s youth. The First Tee and PwC’s collective efforts to influence the thinking and focus of today’s young people has had a lasting impact on The First Tee participants.

PwC, a Proud Partner of ThE PLAyERs Championship, hosted young people from The First Tee of Jacksonville and The First Tee of st. Johns County at the tournament, where they were able to meet PgA TOUR player Camilo Villegas.

“I’ve met some extraordinary people through the game of golf and The First Tee. The harder I work and the more effort I put into my golf game, the more fun it is.”

- Liz Bauernfiend, The First Tee of Eagle Lake

Partnering for Impact “That was one of the coolest experiences I’ll ever have,” said

Sara Diaz (pictured right), a participant from The First Tee of San Antonio. Sara joined two other participants—Donnie Ray Black from The First Tee of Pittsburgh and Katie Hickey from The First Tee of Fort Smith—for an afternoon with World Golf Hall of Famer and Trustee of The First Tee Jack Nicklaus in March 2010. They were in South Florida to film a commercial for the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), for whom Nicklaus is a spokesperson. Sara, Donnie and Katie were selected to be in the commercial because of their involvement at their respective chapters and for exemplifying The First Tee Nine Core Values in their personal lives. The commercial was put together and aired throughout 2010 on network and cable outlets in many tournament telecasts and other golf programming. Yet as important as such exposure is for a nonprofit organization like The First Tee, it only begins to shed a light on the support RBS has provided to The First Tee over the years. The relationship with RBS began in 2004 when they came to The First Tee with a desire to recognize participants who have exhibited core values in their daily lives while overcoming difficult circumstances. Since that year, they have annually supported participants of The First Tee through the RBS Achievers of the Year

award. In doing so, more than 70 participants have been rewarded with scholarships to further their education for drawing on core values learned through The First Tee. Executives from RBS even participate in the judging process for the awards, taking on the near-impossible task of choosing each year’s finalists. “How these young people rely on the core values they have learned at The First Tee is incredible,” said David Webb, head of group brand and marketing for RBS. “Year after year we are amazed at the genuine stories of perseverance, confidence, judgment and responsibility these young people share through their applications. It’s a testament to The First Tee’s ability to make a positive difference in their lives.” In 2008, RBS again came to The First Tee with an opportunity to build on the partnership. This time, they were interested in mentoring. Thanks to their initial funding of the project, The First Tee RBS Mentor Program was developed and The First Tee now prepares mentors throughout the network to build meaningful relationships that positively impact the lives of their mentees. More than 75 chapters of The First Tee have been trained and many more will be trained in the coming years. “RBS believes in harnessing the power of sport—golf in particular—to change lives,” Webb continued. “Our support of The First Tee is a testament to that belief. We believe The First Tee is working and are proud to support their efforts.”

A Corporate Partner’s Story

Page 16: 2010 Annual Review

As a young, African-American female in my community, The First Tee was my outlet. Every Saturday, I was able to escape

the negative peer pressure in my neighborhood and attend golf lessons, where I also learned life lessons. The First Tee Nine Core Values teach morals, the way one should act on and off the green. I began to act with the same honesty and integrity I showed on the golf course in class and at home. Those continuous Saturdays may have seemed tedious and irrelevant for me at the time, but those Saturdays were the foundation for my future. The First Tee afforded me opportunities that no other organization offers. Everyone at The First Tee of Atlanta became more than instructors and peers. They became my family. I knew I could rely on someone to help me with problems beyond golf. Through the wisdom and wise words the instructors spoke about

life, I fell more in love with the game of golf, and The First Tee. Through many experiences and trips with The First Tee, I made lifelong friends with amazing people that I would have never met staying home. I became best friends with the golfers at my chapter, being able to rely on them for homework help, golf help, and even to be there for each other as we chose to attend the same college. The First Tee is more than a junior golf organization. It becomes your family, your friend, your safe haven from peer pressure, and your teacher. But most of all, it has made me who I am today. Please know that your support of The First Tee is helping thousands of young people just like me.

B rian Ladet, program manager at The First Tee of Greater Houston, says watching Tezira Abe progress over the last six years is an

example of how The First Tee coaches can make a difference in a young person’s life. “Tezira stands out in my mind because she is finishing her high school a semester early and has become an accomplished golfer,” he said. “She has already committed to play golf at the University of Texas. I’ve watched her set goals. I’ve watched her grow and become a mature young female athlete. And it’s clear to me that her head is wrapped around the life skills and core values that we teach her here at The First Tee.” Brian first learned about The First Tee in 2000 when he was a sophomore on the Texas Southern University golf team. His team used The First Tee of Houston at FM Law Park location to practice and he

“The Nine Core Values of The First Tee offer a strong foundation for golf, my academics, my future and life in general. These core values help young people stay focused, mentally strong, and gain respect for self and others.”

learning life’s lessonsgradually became familiar with the youth development organization. During his senior year, Brian interned at the chapter and after graduating in 2004, he joined the staff and trained to become a certified The First Tee Coach. Brian credits the participants he’s coached throughout his tenure with teaching him the same life lessons he shares with them. “The participants have taught me the importance of continuous learning and that there’s always room for improvement,” he said. “I learned from them the importance of having a mentor and a go-to person that I can lean on for advice and assistance.” Yet Brian’s greatest reward comes every day for him and many other coaches at The First Tee. “I love watching young participants set short- and long-term goals and witnessing their sense of accomplishment when they achieve their goals. It’s learning life lessons.”

The First Tee coaches demonstrate that if young people are (a)

exposed to the inherent values of the game of golf, (b) surrounded by caring coaches and (c) learn life skills, then the probability they will acquire and exhibit The First Tee nine Core Values increases. The First Tee Coach philosophy embraces the following strategies to create optimal learning environ- ments for young people:

Activity Based…doing versus telling (create experienced-based learning environments; seamless delivery of life skills within golf activities)

Mastery Driven…seek challenging tasks that help develop new skills (balance the focus on process and outcome and bring attention to the intention)

Empower Youth… young people actively participate in the decision-making process (develop positive relationships and take a student-centered approach)

Continuous Learning…foster long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes (engage young people in good-Better-how feedback and identify coachable moments)
