Orange County Land Trust 2010 Annual Report
Your Support of the Orange County Land Trust Creates
Lasting Benefits for Our Communities
Dear Friends:
In 2010, a year in which funding in New York for open space and farmland
protection was cut drastically, the OCLT was able to work with private landowners to
protect their lands and to continue to work with our county, our municipalities and
other nonprofit conservation organizations for the protection of other lands.
Some of our accomplishments include:
Collaborating with our municipalities, county, private landowners and other
nonprofit conservation organizations to initiate and continue negotiations on
the protection of hundreds of acres of working farmland in the towns of
Warwick, Crawford and Minisink and the protection of nearly 200 acres of
important scenic and wildlife habitats in Newburgh, Warwick and Goshen.
Some of these properties are slated to close in 2011.
Contributing to the protection of a 63-acre property adjacent to 400 acres of
conserved lands in Monroe and Tuxedo, most of which are now a part of
Sterling Forest State Park.
Working with Orange County and Open Space Institute to begin process of
acquiring a 13-acre property in the Town of Deerpark with public access to the
Delaware River
Creating an Important Lands Registry to help landowners identify the
irreplaceable natural resources on their lands and how best to conserve them.
Constructing three urban community gardens in our three cities with funding
support from the Land Trust Alliance, Orange County Department of Health,
and Orange County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board as well as
support from community organizations and agencies in Newburgh, Port Jervis
and Middletown.
Continuing to develop a Universal Access Rail Trail at Hamptonburgh Preserve
with Independent Living, Inc., accessible to people with disabilities.
2010 was a year in which the Land Trust became even more of an active
advocate for farmland protection and open space funding, and a voice for the
enormous impact our farms and open spaces have on our economy. We took on a
leadership role by proposing solutions to protect our important lands when funds are
limited. OCLT advocated and helped move forward a new policy adopted by the
Orange County Legislature which allows the County Executive to remove from the tax
sale auction rolls properties identified by the Planning Department as having
conservation value, and to offer these properties for sale to conservation organizations
for protection. This has resulted in the anticipated protection of lands that border the
Appalachian Trail in Warwick and land that will be added to Palisades Interstate Park
in Cornwall. In 2010, the OCLT also began planning a roundtable discussion for land
use professionals, attorneys, municipal and planning professionals, and land
protection advocates on OPAV, Option to Purchase at Agricultural Value, a
conservation tool used in Vermont to protect farmland. This roundtable discussion will
be held in 2011 and is sponsored by the Land Trust Alliance, American Farmland
Trust, and the Town of Warwick, as well as the OCLT.
Saving land is more than saving a parcel from development. With public
funding for land protection drastically cut, saving land means developing innovative
strategies and advocacy in partnership with the business and farm communities,
political entities and environmental support groups. Saving land supports our local
economy so that farmers can profitably do business within the community and
businesses can grow by attracting a work force that cares about quality of life. Saving
land means understanding climate change and how it will affect how we farm, protect
forests and fields, maintain air and water quality and provide for changing habitats for
wildlife. The Land Trust is working to provide for the well being of all who live and
work here now, and for generations to come. Saving land is a serious business that
affects the future of the entire community in many ways and we take it very seriously.
We are both enormously grateful for your continued support of the Orange
County Land Trust.
