SOCIAL JUSTICE

RESPECT

INCLUSIVE

Dear Friends and Family of San Miguel, This year we were reminded many times of how blessed we truly are. San Miguel is a

family of faculty, staff, donors, business partners and community members all working towards one goal; to help our students overcome challenges on the path to a brighter future.

We were all shaken by the tragic events of January 8th, which rocked our community and left us looking for answers. As I watched our students hold prayer vigils and reach out to support the victims, I was filled with pride as I reflected on the maturity and poise of our young men and women. These young people are our future, our hope. For them, and for you, I am extremely thankful.

Our gratitude goes out to Angel Charity for Children, Inc., whose capital gift of over half a million dollars brings us closer to “Graduating the Debt.” Now, as we go to print, all it will take is $1.3 million to call our building debt done. We are working hard to make this happen so that we may then redirect more resources directly to our students—for their classes, training, materials, summer programs, and other endeavors—to give them the competitive education that will make them successful in college.

We look forward to May 2012, when our very first graduating class, the Class of 2008, will earn their college degrees. What a joyous and blessed occasion, to see our first group of graduates receive the fruits of their labor! I look forward to celebrating their achievements.

San Miguel provides an opportunity for deserving students to learn, grow and succeed in a supportive environment, to help them break the cycle of poverty and underemployment they see around them. You, as a community, are changing the lives of these young men and women. There couldn’t be a better calling.

Every article you read in the San Miguel 2010/2011 Annual Report is a tribute to you, our supporters. None of this would be possible without your generosity. You make the difference. Thank you again for being part of our San Miguel family, and for sharing you time, talents and treasures. Blessings,

remembers graduating from San Miguel: “There was a lot I didn’t know about college and I wish I had, but if I had gone to a different school, I wouldn’t have even had the option to go to college. I’m grateful for the opportunities San Miguel has given me. Now, I want to give back to my community.”

But the Quihuis’ story of success doesn’t stop with Renee. Sandra’s middle daughter, Georgie just graduated from San Miguel as part of the class of 2011. Georgie’s experience, though different from Renee’s, has been equally rewarding. Through the Corporate Internship Program, Georgie worked as an intern at Goodwill, United Way, and the University of Arizona Bookstore during her time at San Miguel, and as she prepares to attend the University of Arizona, the Bookstore has hired her as a student employee.

Georgie’s experiences at San Miguel have inspired her: “At San Miguel, I found my passion for social justice. It opened my eyes and let me learn about immigration and service, and let me travel around the country. If I went to a different school, I would have been blind to the ways that I could make a difference, to the ways that I already have at San Miguel.”

Now, the Quihuis’ are preparing to support Regina, the youngest of the three,

as she begins her first year at San Miguel. Regina is excited to follow her older sisters’ example as a San Miguel Viper: “I’m ready for San Miguel. I’m a little bit nervous, but I’m ready to learn.”

Sandra has watched San Miguel grow as she has watched her daughters grow, and encourages others to consider the school. “San Miguel offers opportunities and different programs. I would recommend the school. It’s not for everyone—students have to want to come, and be hardworking, but it is worth it.”

And as one daughter finishes her final year in college, one begins her college career, and one starts her own journey at San Miguel, Sandra knows that it has been worth it: “I’m really proud of all three of them. They’re all different, have different experiences and what they want to be is very different, but I’m very proud of each of them.”

“I’m grateful for the opportunities San Miguel has given me. Now, I want to give back to my community.”

Sandra Quihuis, a single mother of three, remembers when she first heard about San Miguel. Renee, her oldest, was in middle school, and Brother Nick, the first principal of San Miguel, came to St. Monica’s Catholic Church to spread the word about San Miguel. It was a new school, in the early stages of development. Classes would be held in the catechism rooms at St. Monica’s, a single hall of classrooms that would focus on college preparedness.

Renee was hesitant at first, but with encouragement from her teachers and Brother Nick, she enrolled in the inaugural class at San Miguel High School. Later, she was told, she enrolled as the very first student of San Miguel High School.

During her time at San Miguel, Renee saw the school grow from the hall of rooms at St. Monica’s to its own four building campus. The classes grew and opportunities expanded. She reflects, “From summer programs to scholarships, San Miguel helped me with things I had never thought about before attending. The teachers were wonderful, and everyone was helpful and encouraging.”

As part of the first graduating class in 2008, Renee chose to accept a full-ride to the University of San Diego. Renee is now beginning her senior year there, and

Thank you to our 2010-11 Corporate Internship Partners

San Miguel High School reached a major Corporate Internship milestone this year with an award of $25,000 from the Zuckerman Community Outreach Foundation to establish an endowment for small business grants. In addition the Jeannie and Cole Davis Foundation continued their current support of the Small Business Grant.

Corporate Internship Small Business Grants enable small businesses to hire capable, dedicated students while offering a variety of workplace experiences to them, fulfilling a critical need as San Miguel continues to grow. Earnings from the endowment, and the current gift from the Davis’, help San Miguel offer small grants, or discounts off the normal fee, to assist small businesses of less than 60 employees in hiring student workers. This in turn provides diverse and challenging opportunities to the students of San Miguel.

As a small business owner and CIP partner, Judy Tocco, President of Tocco Financial Services, remarks: “We are proud to participate. Our staff was so impressed when we visited the campus we knew we needed to become involved with the fantastic mission of this school. We have not been disappointed. Kristian is a model employee, professional, intelligent, and eager to take on any task. The CIP program is a win/win situation for both employers and students! We look forward to many more years in partnership with San Miguel.”

The Davis Grant plays a crucial role during uncertain economic times as we continue to look for employment opportunities for our students. It enables us to form partnerships and obtain jobs with small businesses throughout the greater Tucson area.

CIP TAKES THE NEXT BIG STEP WITH SMALL BUSINESS GRANT

Like all San Miguel High School students, Vanessa Green, class of 2013, works one day per week and one Friday per month doing entry-level work in a professional setting through the Corporate Internship Program. Vanessa spent the 2010-2011 school year working in the Human Resources office at University Physicians Healthcare, Inc. at Kino Hospital. While learning the challenges and rewards of work in an HR department, she earned a major portion of the cost of her education at San Miguel. For the new school year she will be working in the Emergency Department, exploring a possible post-college career in medicine.

San Miguel Cristo Rey High School, a Catholic, LaSallian learning community empowering youth from underserved families, nurtures a Christian s pirit and integrates rigorous academics with practical experience, thereby transforming students to be prepared for college and career.

COLLEGE PREP

NEW: HONORS CLASSES

San Miguel is excited to announce the introduction of new Honors and Advance Placement (AP) courses for the 2011-2012 school year, which will expand curriculum options to engage students at a higher level. Honors courses will offer a workload commensurate with college courses to further challenge students, increasing their competitiveness as they apply to and attend college.

Brother Dan Fenton, FSC, who will teach Honors Biology, recently received grants from both the Catholic Foundation and Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold for new equipment for his classes in the coming year. We look forward to many exciting updates from his classes.

CONCERN FOR THE POORSan Miguel hosted four student

groups from the Western United States for a five-day innovative immigration immersion program known as El Otro Lado (The Other Side). El Otro Lado assists students in understanding the complexity of undocumented immigration, while reflecting and discussing relevant social justice issues. Daily activities expose stu-dents to the different perspectives of humanitarians, Native Ameri-cans, and the federal government.
