Section A: - Plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement 1) The IQAC gives directions and guidelines for quality enhancement of the various aspects of college functioning at the beginning of the year. 2) These guidelines are given for planning the year’s activities towards fulfillment of the Objectives. 3) Upgradation of infrastructure and planning engagements for imparting quality all round education is planned in advance. The plan for 2010-11 seeks to implement these suggestions and meet these objectives :

Resource Augmentation and modernization. Renovation of Chemistry laboratory. Creation of additional IT lab. Enhancement of technology in teaching-learning by acquiring electronic and computer

equipments and accessories. Software modules for Provident funds of staff and attendance of students. Additional elevator. Use of e-notice board Developing a dynamic website. Mentoring students for improving results. Organizing workshops on statistical tools in research and national seminar in Hindi. Arranging computer literacy programmes for staff and students to use ICT in regular

teaching-learning. Introduction of Post- graduate course in Accountancy, additional division in B.Sc. (I.T.),

Travel and Tourism as an option in S.Y.B.A., Mathematics (six papers) in T.Y.B.Sc. Introduction of certificate courses in languages. Research projects to be taken up by Dept. of Physics and Chemistry Organize a book exhibition, adding e-journals to the library.

Student-centric Planning :

Appointment of a College Activities Coordinator to organize and oversee all the activities of the various committees and associations.

Open access system in the library. To give additional incentives to sports men/women. Introduction of community and extension programmes. Celebrating Maharashtra’s 60th year of formation. Organizing visits and field trips for students. Strengthening campus placement programme and the counseling cell. Conducting Gender Empowerment programmes, keeping in mind the dominant girl

population in the college.

Section B : Details in respect of the following

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution :

‘Inclusiveness, Equity and Service’ have guided the activities of the college. The focus is on activities that enhance the competency of our students and transform them into an employable human resource. a) The College introduced six papers course in Mathematics in T.Y.B.Sc. at the under-

graduate level and M.Com in Accountancy at the post-graduate level in this year. b) The Library seeks to enrich its information resources on a continuous basis as new courses and subjects are introduced almost every year. As a result of the introduction of Mathematics as a full elective in the Third Year B.Sc. and M.Com. in Accountancy and Management, more emphasis was laid on buying relevant text books and reference material for these courses and adding to the on-line subscriptions of ICFAI Journals.

a) More reader friendly measures were also initiated this year. The Open Access System in the Central Library and photocopying service was introduced.

b) Workshop on use of statistical tools in research in Commerce was organized. c) 22 students have availed of full/partial fee concession. Scholarships/Freeships were

availed by 45 students. d) Book Bank facility was used by 31 students. e) Our ex-students have assisted student volunteers in the organization of cultural programmes through choreography and audio arrangement. Our alumni also arranged workshops on socially meaningful themes at the NSS Residential camp.

Awareness programme for the villagers and Cleanliness drive in the

village

h) Students actively participate in intra as well as intercollegiate co-curricular/cultural/ sports events. They are given incentives (travel and food allowances).

58 students participated in intercollegiate events and 13 prizes were won. Folk dance group won the First prize at the dance competition organised by Dept.

of Students Welfare, University of Mumbai. i) Website has been modernized this year and is made dynamic and being managed by students under the guidance of a staff member.

j) Guidance lectures, study visits, guest lectures as well as other academic programs help students to connect learning to diverse dimensions of life.

B. Staff Development : a) Three staff members are pursuing Doctoral research and others have been engaged in participating in workshops, seminars, conferences. Six papers were presented. b) Three articles were published and three faculty members have completed Research Projects.

C. Organisational Development : a) Infrastructure upgradation is a prerequisite for developing global competencies. An addition of computational facilities and introduction of ICT in teaching have been done.

b) E-Notice Boards are maintained by students. c) Computers and printers were added to the existing facilities.

d) Eight voice amplifiers were purchased for staff members for comfort in lecturing. 2. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG) :

An additional division of B.Sc.(I.T.) Mathematics (6 units) at T.Y.B.Sc. Travel and Tourism (optional subject) at S.Y.B.A. M.Com. (Accountancy) a two year P.G. course is initiated. Saral Hindi Certificate course of one year duration is initiated in collaboration with Hindustani Prachar Sabha.

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction :

The college is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and hence, the curriculum designed by the Boards of Studies of the University is followed by the college. However, the staff members actively participate in the processes of curricular design and curriculum transactions.

At the College level, the departments take initiatives to enrich curriculum transactions by conducting special lectures, skill enhancing sessions, etc. on topics related to the syllabus and of contemporary relevance and organizing study tours, etc. to provide the students the field experience. These sessions oriented students to develop subject knowledge as well as concept clarity apart from initiating interest in learning.

BBI students visited industries located at Silvasa from 2nd to 4th March, 2011. An orientation programme for TYBMM & TYBMS students organized on 24th May,

2010. Mr. Vijay Gawade, Ms. Gita Sashidharan and Mr. Shridhar Naik conducted the programme.

Mr. Vinod Mahabale, Commercial Artist, Sakal Newspaper, conducted workshop on ‘ Use of Calligraphy in designing’ from 21st to 28th July, 2010.

A seminar was organized in association with Geebee Education for TYBMM, TYBMS, TYBBI & TYBSc.(I.T) students on 20th & 21st August, 2010.

A workshop was organized in collaboration with Prasad Engineering on ‘Project Synopsis, Documentation & Careers in I.T.’ on 21st August, 2010.

A seminar on ‘Hardware’ for I.T. students was organized in association with Jetking. Workshops on ‘Approach to case study’ were organized for BMS & BMM students on

30th Aug.,2010 and 14th Sept., 2010. The Guest Speaker was Dr. Shobha Dedhia, HOD & Co-ordinator, SNDT University.

A seminar on ‘Reforms in Capital and Money Market’ was organized on 10th Jan.,2011 for BBI students of different colleges. Ms. Dina Mehta (Ex-President of Mumbai Stock Exchange), Mr. Bhargeswar Banerji (Deputy General Manager of Reserve Bank of India) gave special lectures.

Mr. Amey Taare and Mr. Praveen Mishra of Binary Web Solutions (I) Pvt. Ltd., conducted a seminar on ‘Career Opportunities in Advertising & Social Media’ on 21st January, 2011.

A seminar on ‘Software Testing & Mobile Computing’ was organized by Seed Infotech for B.Sc.(I.T) students on 19th February, 2010. 4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started : Nil

5. Examination reforms implemented :

The examinations for the First year and Second year course are conducted by the College on behalf of the University as per the guidelines given by the University. The dates for these examination are notified well in advance and form a part of the Academic Calendar framed at the beginning of the Term/Semester/an academic year, though subject to changes as per the directions of the University.

Coding and masking of answer papers were introduced to ensure secrecy and to pre-empt any possibility of malpractices. The coding system is devised and executed only by the Convener of the examination committee.

The assessment of the papers of the examinations for the First Year and Second Year Courses is centralized in the College. The assessed papers are moderated by senior teachers from other colleges as per the rules framed by the University of Mumbai. The Examination Committee strives to simplify procedures to make them user-friendly, though not compromising with quality and secrecy. Staff meetings are held before and after these examinations. Teachers’ suggestions based on their experience and their interaction with students are positively considered and implemented suitably by the Examination Committee. The results of these examinations are processed ensuring secrecy and published well before the deadlines set by the University. The examinations for the Third Year courses are conducted by the University. To improve the performance of the students in these examinations, periodical class tests are conducted by teachers and the Terminal and Preliminary Examinations by the Examination Committee.

18. Community services (NSS) : The NSS Unit enrolled 270 volunteers. Many area - based and University based Projects were organized by the Unit. Area based Project -1 Red Ribbon Club (RRC)Activities : 1) The College has been assigned two RRC units by MDACS and 1000 students were enrolled. 2) On World AIDS Day, 60 volunteers spread awareness about AIDS (causes and consequences) and performed street plays in the adopted areas on 30th and 31st December, 2010. 40 volunteers performed street play in the College campus . 5) The film “My Brother Nikhil” was screened on 1st December, 2010 to sensitize students about the social stigma attached to AIDS. 90 students were present at the screening. 6) 35 volunteers performed street play on the subject of AIDS on 10th January, 2011 under NDTV project. 7) On 3rd & 4th February,2011 - 20 volunteers organized AIDS Awareness sessions for the students of Guru Nanak Junior college. Gender Sensitization : NSS volunteers (40) participated in Role Play on ‘Gender sensitization’ in the College campus on 17th January, 2011. This activity helped them to understand various stereotypes associated with gender, its perception in context to the society.

On 18th January, 2011, a special thought provoking lecture on ‘Gender Sensitization’ was delivered by Dr. Medha Tapiawala, Guru Nanak College.. It sensitized students about gender issues and gender equality. 52 volunteers attended this lecture. Area based Project 2 : National Integration 1) On Republic Day , 152 students attended the flag hoisting ceremony in the College campus, followed by Bal Mela program. They also visited adopted areas to spread the message of unity and national integration. Area based Project -3 Visit to Lavali 60 NSS volunteers visited the ‘Adivasi pada’ at Lavali village on 11th January. 2011, interacted with local people, distributed clothes and made an effort to understand their problems and lifestyle. University Level Activities : 10 NSS volunteers participated in Yuvak Biradari, Vile Parle, Mumbai on 28th Dec., 2011. They participated in singing, street play and poster making competitions conducted by various colleges. College Level Activities : NSS Unit organized the annual intercollegiate competition Yuvak Mela on 27th and 28th Jan., 2011. Many colleges from Mumbai region participated incompetitions like Project Presentation, Elocution, Debate, Essay writing and street play. The volunteers also organized a food festival in the College campus. Residential Camp : Residential Camp from 10th Nov. to 16th Nov., 2010 was organized by the NSS unit at Swanand Ashram, Badlapur. 108 volunteers and 30 ex-volunteers actively participated in Guest lectures, street plays and interactive sessions conducted in this camp.

21. Improvements in the library services :

a) Introduction of Open Access System : Open Access System was introduced on the 6th floor Reference Library from July, 2010.

b) Conduct of annual book exhibition : New books especially reference and general books acquired by the library were displayed from 9th to 13th December, 2010. Charts, statistics, pictures, books, newspaper clippings, etc. on ‘Human Rights’ were also displayed separately in the library.

Students assess teachers in both the Aided and Self-Financing Courses, through a feedback format circulated at the end of the academic year.

The data collected is analysed graphically and a report is maintained by the administration. Staff members are appraised of these reports, confidentially. This helps staff members to self-evaluate, improvise and constantly work upon their teaching methodology.

24. Feedback from stakeholders :

Parents, Students, Staff, Principal and Management constitute the stakeholders of the college. Regular informal and formal interaction among stakeholders has ensured feedback this year.

Meetings with parents during admission, attendance related sessions and Annual Prize Distribution Day this year, have enabled interaction.

The LMC (Local Managing Committee) is constituted of Management representatives, teaching/non-teaching staff representatives and the Principal. The meeting was held twice this year.

25. Unit cost of education :

The unit cost of education for the year 2010-11 was as follows: Rs. 14,111.18 (cost per student including salaries). 26. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination

results, issue of certificates :

The office administration and accounting are fully computerised. With the existing Financial, Payroll and Student modules, the attendance module for maintaining students’ attendance is added in this year. With 11 computers connected by LAN with central backup server, the following functions are carried out efficiently. - Admission (students data base, merit list, fees collection, receipting, Roll call, Division allotment, etc). - Staff salary. - University correspondence in e-format in addition to hard copies. - Students’ attendance. - Notices /circulars for students and staff. - Time Tables for lectures, Tutorials and Practical. The College has its own website maintained by professionals and college teachers as well as students updated regularly and used as a tool for disseminating all sorts of relevant information. The College is in the process of adding Provident Fund Module with Payroll Module which will be operative from the financial year 2011-12. Introduction of the Advanced Tally Accounting Package gradually is also in its plans. The examination process is fully computerised. The printing of question papers, processing and finalisation of results, entry of marks and printing of consolidated statements and students’ grade sheets are handled by an independent agency. The exam scheduling, announcements through printed and electronic notices to staff and students are managed by the examination committee. However, the management is planning to introduce the examination software, with which the College will be able to manage the entire examination process internally.

27. Increase in the infrastructural facilities :

Chemistry laboratory on the VI floor is fully renovated. An IT lab with a capacity of 20 computers is newly constructed on the IV floor adjacent to the existing IT lab, for M.Sc. Considering the security and safety to the institution, the management is planning to install around 32 CCTV cameras in the class rooms and all around the campus. The plans for the installation of a new lift and total renovation of the old lift are in the pipe- line. The management has also planned to restart the construction of Auditorium on the first floor which was not in use for so many years. Around seven small rooms are decided to be made, one on each floor, adjacent to the staircase and old lift, to accommodate various activities such as personal counselling/ Career counselling, teacher-student interaction, Hindi Research Centre, Medical Centre/First Aid room, Alumni Association, Extension activities and Cultural activities. 28. The College is in the process of adding UGC N-LIST (National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content) Programme to be introduced from the academic year 2011-12 that will give our staff and students access to more than 2000 e-journals and 50,000 e-books of various publishers. Moreover, it is planned to install WiFi connectivity in the Campus from the academic year 2011-12. 29. Computer and internet access and training to teachers, non-teaching staff and students

a) Computer and internet access to teachers and students For individual departments of Science stream, such as Chemistry, Physics and Botany, computers are provided in the laboratories. They are used by students and teaching as well as non-teaching staff of the respective departments.

In the library on the VI floor, two computers are made available to students. In the Reading room on the III floor, 12 computers with MTNL net connectivity are provided to students and staff. In the two computer laboratories on the IV floor, 42 computers are available, which are largely used by the students of Computer Science and Information Technology.

b) Computer and internet training to teachers : The Commerce department in association with Mumbai Commerce Association has organised a workshop on the topic “Use of Statistical Tools in Research in Commerce” in September, 2010 for the teachers.

Teachers attending Refresher Courses and Orientation Programmes organised by UGC Academic Colleges acquire the training on IT and Computer usage. 31. Activities and support from the Alumni Association :

Many of the students of the College, constituting the Alumni, are involved in a number of activities. The alumni meet and confabulate occasionally. Some noteworthy interactions are

- Mr. Natarajan (1997 Alumnus) assisted in organizing the NSS Residential Camp from 10th to 16th November, 2010.

- Mr. Krishnakant (1997 Alumnus) delivered a lecture on National Integration at the NSS Residential Camp in November, 2010.

- Mr. Shakti (2009 Alumnus) trained students in performing street plays for the community programmes this year.

32. Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher Association : Informal interaction is done by the Principal with parents and students during admission. Teachers also interact with parents to discuss performance and behavior of students as and when required. Suggestions from parents with regard to development of College are also accepted by the Principal, if found suitable. 33. Health services :

- Guru Nanak Hospital is open to the staff of the College for medical check-up and Consultation at subsidized rate. A medical checkup was conducted in April, 2011. - The college has a doctor-on-call for any emergencies. Dr. Pritish Achalia is contacted whenever a medical emergency arises

- For addressing the mental health of students, personal counselor (clinical psychologist) visits the college - MOU with Krishna Cardiac Centre, Dadar, Mumbai.

Sports activities have always been encouraged and student participation in both internal as well as external events has been enthusiastic.

39. Development programmes for non-teaching staff : None 40. Good practices of the institution :

a) The College upgrades library facilities to make it more student friendly. A photocopier machine is purchased and kept for use in the college library.

b) Open access system was introduced in the college library to make the library more reader friendly.

c) To ensure that the students from economically backward strata also get access to higher education, facility of two or three instalments in fee repayment is also extended.

d) For effective dissemination of information, e-Notice Board is regularly updated.

e) Student participation is encouraged in many aspects of college functioning e.g. e-NB maintenance, organizing programmes, celebrating days of National and International importance. Membership fees of Sports Association/Clubs are paid every year so that interested sportsmen/women can continue playing at the District Level even after passing out from the college viz: MDFA and MDBA for football and boxing respectively.

f) Hindi language course is introduced to improve language proficiency. g) Academy Enhancement sessions orient students to cultivate effective study skills and

improve subject knowledge. Dr. Priya M. Vaidya conducted the following sessions: Guidance lectures for academic enhancement for S.Y.B.Com. students (18 sessions). Guidance lectures for academic enhancement for S.Y.B.A. students (6 sessions) Guidance lectures for academic enhancement for S.Y.B.Sc. students (5 sessions) Guidance lectures for academic enhancement for F.Y.B.Sc. students (5 sessions) Special lecture on ‘How to face exams ?’ for S.Y.B.Com. students. Techniques to

develop positive approach towards academic enhancement were shared. h) Celebration of Maharashtra week in February, 2011 to mark the completion of 50 years

of formation of the State of Maharashtra. Cultural programme along with an exhibition, food festival and celebration of Marathi cinema and poetry were the highlights of the week long celebrations. The theme of the cultural programme was ‘Exploring Cultural bonds between Maharashtra and Punjab’

i) Pre-admission guidance is extended by the Principal and teachers to students. Principal and teachers also interact with parents (especially parents of first generation learners) as and when required to convey academic performance of the students and career related information.

j) Health check-up for non-teaching/teaching staff is organised by the college. k) College NSS Unit organised theme based ‘Yuvak Mela’ (Theme: Gender democracy) to

train youth to become socially responsible citizens of the world. l) Additional financial support to conduct Annual NSS activities is extended by the College

Management. m) To encourage reading habits amongst students, Annual theme based Books Exhibition is

organised by the College library. Books, CDs, posters on the theme of the year ‘Human Rights Awareness’ were separately displayed to sensitize students about Human Rights on 10th December, 2010 – ‘Human Rights Day’.

n) Students are motivated to improve academic performance. Endowment prizes are constituted and given to meritorious students on the College Annual Day (Table A.1 in Appendix- I).
