2011 OUTLOOKAfter facing strong competition during the
2010 fall season and playing courses such asThe Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, a futureRyder Cup site, the Davidson men’s golf teamis looking to prove themselves against top com-petition in the spring.
“Overall the fall season was good,” said headcoach Tim Straub, entering his 11th season atthe helm of the Wildcats. “Obviously therewere times when we wished we had playedbetter, but we showed we can compete with thebest in the country.”
“We had a good schedule, and I was veryproud of our young guys. The freshmen, SamEchikson and Richard Fountain, really steppedin and adjusted well not only to school, but tocollege golf too.”
The two newcomers lived up to expectationsin the fall and ended up leading the Wildcats instroke average through four tournaments.Fountain concluded the fall season with ateam-leading 72.58 stroke average, good forseventh in the conference, and fired a season-low 66 in the final round of the MizunoSavannah Intercollegiate to force a playoff, which he won for his first collegiate medalisthonor. Echikson earned a pair of top-20 finishesand concluded with a 73.83 average.
“They played very well and played very con-sistent, and that’s not typical for freshmen, so Iexpect they will keep it up this spring,” saidStraub.
Golfweek ranked Fountain as the 67th-bestgraduating senior before he entered Davidson, while Echikson was a member of Belgium’snational team, so the duo will look to maketheir mark at the Southern ConferenceChampionship.
“Richard and Sam bring a lot of confidenceand a lot of talent to the team,” said Straub.“They seldom have off days and seem to showup ready to play every time they tee it up.”
Richard Fountain at the Savannah Intercollegiate
A strong group of returners, led by seniorcaptain Bobby Urso and junior Jackson Taylor, will also look to lead the Wildcats this spring. The pair finished the 2009-10 season with thetop stroke averages on the team, and Taylorearned his first collegiate medalist honors atthe spring season-opening Wexford PlantationIntercollegiate. Urso also fired a career-low 66at the Southern Conference Championship.
The 2010 fall season proved to be challengingfor the pair, so both will be looking to reboundin the spring. Taylor was only able to competein two tournaments, but appears back on hisgame after surgery, as he won the CarolinasYoung Amateur over the winter.
“Jackson played very well at the CarolinaYoung Amateurs this winter, and I think he isgoing to have a great spring,” said Straub.“Our captain, Bobby Urso, didn’t play as wellas he would have liked in the fall, so I think heis going to turn around and have a really goodspring. He is a very hard worker and he is verydedicated.”
Jackson Taylor
Boasting the third-best fall stroke average onthe team in the fall was sophomore JohnSkeadas. Skeadas slid right into the startinglineup as a freshman in 2009-10, firing a 69 inhis second collegiate tournament and placingsixth in the Wexford Intercollegiate. He fin-ished the year with a 75.50 stroke average, butimproved to 74.00 this past fall.
Seniors Christopher Rollins and Ryan Crumwill also look to be big contributors this spring.Rollins tied for 15th at the Davidson CollegeInvitational, while Crum finished in the top-30.Sophomore Walker Allen competed twice in thefall, while senior Adam Lewicki competed inthe Davidson College Invitational.
A total of four newcomers joined the teamfor the 2010-11 season, as Ben Murray fromToronto, Ontario and local product James
Bramlett (Charlotte, N.C.) rounded out thefreshmen class. Murray saw action at theDavidson College Invitational.
After an offseason of weight lifting and yogatraining, the team will open the spring slate forthe sixth year in a row at Hilton Head Island,S.C. with the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiateon Feb. 21-22. Jackson Taylor will look todefend his individual medalist title, while theteam will look to improve on their third-placefinish.
The ‘Cats will return to the coast for theSeahawk Intercollegiate in Wilmington, N.C.the following week and face stiff competitionfrom schools such as No. 25 Wake Forest,North Carolina and South Carolina. They willthen return to competition at the FurmanIntercollegiate on Mar. 18-20 and face a strongfield that will also include several SoConteams.
On Apr. 9-10, Davidson and Charlotte willonce again host the Irish Creek Collegiate atThe Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis.
“I think we have our strongest field ever inthe history of the tournament, so we are veryexcited about that,” said Straub. “It’s going tobe a great challenge, but I think the guys are upto it this spring.”
The home tournament will be the final tune-up before the SoCon Championship, whichreturns to the Country Club of South CarolinaApr. 17-19. The Wildcats will look to improveupon last year’s 10th-place finish.
“The SoCon is as strong as ever this year,”said Straub. “We have some really strong pro-grams like Chattanooga, Furman and Collegeof Charleston who have been playing well.UNCG has been playing very well, so it’s goingto be tough. But we have shown that if we putit together and build our momentum as thespring goes on, there is no reason we can’t bein the mix.”

HISTORY OF THE WILDCAT
2010-11 GOLF 21
On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22football players traveled to Atlanta to representDavidson College against Auburn, one of themost formidable teams in the South. ThePlainsmen had massacred their first four oppo-nents, outscoring teams, 141-6.
According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored inthe day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and start-ed a line averaging 20 pounds less.
Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated thegame, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly,Davidson pulled together an offensive attackthrough the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck”Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, deliver-ing a “bewildering array of forward passes.”
Davidson defeated one of the most powerfulteams in the South that day, 21-7, with scrappi-ness that captured the awe and respect ofAtlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the“Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose smallstature and ferocious style proved overwhelm-ing. One account notes that Morgan Blake of theAtlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team,“No other team ever put together in theseUnited States of the same weight as CoachFetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over theflock of wild men from North Carolina.”
The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing for-mer, milder references such as “Red and Black,”“Presbyterians” and “Preachers.”

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE
DAVIDSON WILDCATS22
A majority of the sports at Davidsoncompete in the Southern Conference, oneof the oldest conferences in the nation, which began its 89th season in 2009. Thesoccer, volleyball, cross country, track andfield, basketball, tennis, wrestling, baseballand golf programs at Davidson all partici-pate in the league.
Only the Big Ten (1896), the MissouriValley (1907) and the Pac-10 (1915) confer-ences have been around longer than theSoCon (1921). The conference currentlyconsists of 12 members in five statesthroughout the Southeast and sponsors 19varsity sports and championships, whichproduce participants for NCAAChampionships.
The Southern Conference was the first“super conference,” with charter member-ship including Alabama, Auburn andNorth Carolina. The SoCon gave birth tothe three-point shot in college basketball, has the oldest basketball tournament in thenation and was the college home of suchsporting greats as Arnold Palmer, StephenCurry, Jerry West and Charlie “ChooChoo” Justice.
Academic excellence has long been amajor part of the Southern Conference’stradition. League athletes have been recog-nized countless times on CoSIDAAcademic All-America and district teams.Eighteen Rhodes-Scholar winners havecome out of the conference, including sixfrom Davidson. Each year, the league dis-tributes at least three graduate scholar-ships, two of which were won by Wildcatsoccer players in 2004.
The Southern Conference was born onFeb. 25, 1921, in Atlanta, Ga., when 14institutions from the 30-member SouthernIntercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA)reorganized as the Southern Conference. The charter members were Alabama,Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech,Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State,North Carolina, N.C. State, Tennessee,Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington &Lee, and athletic competition began thatfall.
In 1922, seven schools — Florida,Louisiana State, Mississippi, SouthCarolina, the University of the South,Tulane and Vanderbilt — joined the ranks.
Since then, conference membership hasexperienced a series of membershipchanges with 42 institutions being affiliat-ed with the league. The league has under-gone two major transitions during its his-tory.
The first occurred in December of 1932.The Southeastern Conference formed outof the 23-school Southern Conferencewhen 13 members west and south of theAppalachian Mountains reorganized tohelp reduce the extensive travel demands.
In 1953, Clemson, Duke, Maryland,North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolinaand Wake Forest withdrew from the
league to form the Atlantic CoastConference, seeking to schedule a greaternumber of regular-season basketball gamesagainst local rivals.
Today, the league continues to thriveand is home to Appalachian State, Collegeof Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon,Furman, Georgia Southern, UNCGreensboro, Chattanooga, WesternCarolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008,Samford officially joined the league, bring-ing membership of the conference to 12.VMI is an associate member in the sport ofwrestling.
The SoCon currently declares champi-ons in 10 men’s sports — football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and out-door track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf — and nine women’s sports— soccer, volleyball, cross country, basket-ball, indoor and outdoor track and field, tennis, golf and softball.
