The Swan Valley Tour courtesy of our inimitable, newly sexagenarian, Simon who once again gave us all a magical crawl tour through the wineries, chocolate factories’, plonk port outlets and distillery, all ably organised by our social coordinator extraordinaire Tom, was once again an excellent day. The weather was perfect, the fare fantastic and the company very enjoyable. In the process, we also celebrated Simons 60th Birthday at one of the wineries with suitably rich and delicious birthday cakes.
To top that off our “never say never” Simon has once again said yes to assailing “The Bight” once again over the Christmas break. See the new promo “Three Amigos” later in the magazine. We have had numerous attempts at Easter to do this trip, all suffereing defeat at the hands of the elements. This time we are going to try the Christmas break instead!
This month, thanks to the significant efforts of Rob Griffiths, we should be all be receiving logins to the new website he has developed. The emails will identify how to login with your own personal passwords. Once all the planned trips are loaded we will be able to register for the trips on line and will be able to be kept up to date with developments as they go along. It will also make it easy to keep track of any trip reports that that we have promised to do and will enable easy sharing of the many pictures take on the trips. So watch you inbox!
As with the Annual dinner, the Annual General Meeting is also fast approaching. We will have three office bearer positions waiting to be filled: President, Secretary and Trips Coordinator plus committee members. So start thinking about how you might be able to contribute to the effective running of the club we take so much fun from participating in.
Also at this months General Meeting we are going to receive a presentation “all things Tyres” from the largest independent tyre distributor “Midvale Tyres”. So if you have any questions about tyres for your vehicle, or just curious about what is now available, come along and hear what they have to say.
Cheers, John Cahill

TRIP CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT September
Hi Folks The Club has enjoyed some great events of late, and one of them was the Swan Valley social which for me rates as one of the highlights of the year. The only way to describe it would be pure self indulgency of the taste buds! Thank you to Simon for donating his time to drive us around, and to Tom for coordinating the event. I think we managed to make it a memorable 60th birthday for Simon.
Talking of buds, Spring has finally sprung and in keeping with this time of year the trip calendar allows good opportunity to get our cars out in to the bush for some good wildflower viewing. Had good reports of the Mt Lesueur trip which, as a unique and very special area for wildflowers never disappoints; it even has its own Mt Lesueur Grevillea. So if you haven’t already, tis time to get the cameras and binoculars out, and dust the winter away!
As mentioned last month, if anyone is planning a Christmas/new year trip and would like to open it up to fellow club members as an informal invitation, let us know. “Informal” meaning no trip leading or itinerary requirements etc, just name the venue and turn up if you wish kind of trip.

TONY’S TOODYAY TRIP – SUNDAY 10/10/10
The plan is to wander through the north side of Avon Valley National Park (DEC fees apply - $11.00), with a possible diversion through Julimar Conservation Park, before finishing at Toodyay with (time permitting) an 8km (16km return) drive down Cobbler Pool Road alongside the Avon.
The Avon Valley National Park is an almost 4,800 hectare reserve which lies on the transition between the jarrah forest of the south, and the drier north country. The upland in the park is forested with jarrah, marri and powderbark, and the valleys with wandoo. The Avon River, named Gol-guler by the Nyoongar people of the Darling Range, is fringed with flooded gum. It runs through the centre of the park and becomes a turbu-lent flood in winter, rushing down to join the Swan River in Walyunga Na-tional Park. Avon Valley National Park was declared in 1970.
In the early days, the area was known for the hide-out of Joseph Bolitho Johns (alias Moondyne Joe), WA’s most infamous bush ranger, whose exploits began after his first escape from the Toodyay lockup in 1861. His cave and corral were located in the north of what is now the park, but have been all but destroyed by successive bushfires.
Julimar Conservation Park, which lies between Toodyay and Bindoon, comprises a 28,317 hectare tract of bushland. It is managed by DEC. It is a hot spot for reintroduced native fauna. Species reintroduced in the last decade and now breeding prolifically include chuditch, woylies, quen-das and brush-tailed possums.
The 4WD’ing is expected to be easy.
Meet: Gingers Roadhouse (Gull Service Station), Great Northern Highway, Upper Swan.
Time: 9.15 for 9.30am start.
Bring: a full tank of petrol, food for lunch, water etc.
Contact: Tony Richards - Ph: 9386 7705(H) or 9415 5616(W)

THREE AMIGOS, THREE BIGHTS! Join us on our third attempt to travel the section of The Great Aus-tralian Bight from Caiguna to Esperance following the old Overland Telegraph Line. This time we will run with 3 Trip Leaders, something I don’t think we have done before so between us we have plenty of experience to throw at it! Fantastic Scenery along the cliff tops and beachs, this is a remote area camping trip where we take what we need, not what we want and we must be totally self sufficient. Once we leave Caiguna we will travel on limestone caprock and sand al-most to Esperance.
When. 26th Dec 2010 to 3rd Jan 2011 9 days.
With a maximum of 10 cars this trip is expected to fill fast so do not delay in contacting any of the 3 Amigos,
Or put down your name on the trip sheet at the meeting.
If you wish to go but not in your car let us know as you may be able to join as a passenger.

MUNDARING
MEANDER Sunday November 7th
This Social Event is centred round the consumption of food and drink in good company. If you are expecting anything re-motely like Peter’s epic Power-line trips because of the word “Mundaring”- you will definitely be disappointed. However, if the notion of a laid back day in the Perth Hills appeals this could be for you.
The concept is to firstly meet at an excellent patisserie and coffee shop in Gooseberry Hill at around 10.30 am. You can enjoy an hour or so of chat over coffee with fellow club members. If you wish to, you can have your coffee or chocolat from a drinking bowl in the French style. The pas-tries and cakes are so visually appealing it almost seems wrong to de-molish them. Those wishing to wipe the crumbs from their faces and leave at that point can move on to home or other commitments.
The rest of us will travel along the scenic Mundaring Weir Road from Kalamunda towards Mundaring. The Hills should be beautiful at this point in early Summer with wildflowers still present. The plan is to stop off at South Ledge which overlooks the Weir and water catchment. A 300 me-tre walk through the bush from the parking area takes you to the “Golden View” viewing platform. Then it’s off to the pub (once you get back to your vehicle).
The nearby Mundaring Weir Hotel is renowned as a great place to gather on Summer Sundays. There are a range of food options at the Hotel as well as live music. A spit roast is available from around 3 pm for the real stayers.

Fiddles and Nibbles Sunday 31st October
Are there any jobs that you would like to do on your car and maybe need a bit of guidance to achieve them?
Well this is the idea of the day. It allows you to get in there and tackle projects that you otherwise may not do.
I have a fairly well equipped workshop with a hoist which will allow the tackling of most jobs.
If you will require quite a bit of help, or a large project, please organise this beforehand so that I have an idea of what resources are required.
No jobs? just come for lunch or a chat.
B.Y.O. everything, BBQ supplied if required to cook on.
Time: 9am on
Address: 218 Lakelands Drive, Gnangara (corner Sydney Road)
Potential members are most welcome to come along on any Club activities before joining. Please phone the Trip Leader for further information.
Register with the trip leader if you are wanting to join a trip or social. Also contact the trip leader if you have to cancel, as we don’t want to wait for someone who does not turn up!
Some trips are ideas only and may be subject to change. Some of the later trips need trip leaders – volunteers please.

This is a trip for all members in all model 4WD Subarus (except unlifted Libertys or Imprezas). Outbacks have had a few front clearance prob-lems in the past, so if these owners have any concerns please contact the trip leader. We split into groups depending on experience and start off easy, pro-gressing to something more challenging. It is a fun day in a safe area with experienced members who will give you advice on all facets of driv-ing on sand including tyre pressures, choosing the right gear ratios and how to get out after getting stuck in the sand.

Toodyay Gymkhana Sunday 25th July
After a very cold night, the coals of the campfire were kicked back into life the next morning. The day was turning out to be perfect in the low 20s with-
out a cloud in the sky. Breakfast was had , which may have included leftovers from the big cookout
and there was quite a lot of leftovers.
A few more cars turned up in time to join in the days activities. Once every-one was present the group was split into half, with one group doing the gym-
khana and the other for some offroading. The gymkhana was held in the paddock next to the campsite and after doing
the rounds collecting old milk cartons and pvc pipes the course was laid out
with orange witches hats. The proceedings were very professionally managed by long-standing club member Ray Russell with the assistance of Richard le
Serve Groans were heard from some when told there would be reversing involved,
and it was the undoing of many.
A few different courses were run throughout the session, and the paddock was gradually getting more and more chewed up. Then it was time for lunch
for about 30 minutes before the groups swapped activities.
Peter and his trusty dog Deefer (which stands for D for dog) led the group on an offroad tour around his property. There were a few challenging gullies
which gave the stock height Subies some scrapes with the steep approach
angles but everyone made it through ok. After several more gullies and hills the group arrived at a little 'playground' with large puddles and mounds to
drive around on. Once playtime was over it was time to head back to the campsite through more gullies and steep hills. The only casualty for the day
was John losing a side skirt from his Forester.
When we arrived back it was time to pack up and everyone made their own
way home. A very enjoyable weekend with excellent weather and company. Thanks to
John, Ray Russell and everyone else who organised and participated in this gymkhana event.

Mt Lesueur and Sandy Point – Day 1 (14th August)
We met as planned at the 10th Light Horse Trail early on what was a cool, grey morning. There were seven cars includ-ing prospective members Nor-dine and Delanie, recently in Perth from San Diego and keen to see some of WA in their Outback. The initial plan had been to use the new southern section of Indian
Ocean Drive to head north but, as it was not yet completed we took some of the back roads, via Orange Springs, to the Brand Highway be-fore stopping at Cataby for a break. The initially bleak weather was breaking up and the forecast for a fine weekend was starting to look ac-curate.
After morning tea at Cataby we headed up the highway past Badgin-garra before turning west toward Jurien Bay and then up to Mt Lesueur. At the entrance to the National Park we met up with Adrian and Matt, who were on their way back home to Perth after their big trip up the coast, and then spent a fair while looking at the superb display of wild-flowers right at the entry station. Jo and I had been to Lesueur in the spring on a number of occasions previously and had never seen it this good.
Next stop was the day use area at the start of the walk trail to Mt Lesueur, where we had an early lunch before most of us took off on the walk. Dawn decided to do the short version, but even that provided a feast of colour and variety. By this stage the weather was quite nice and we were able to enjoy all the flowers and shrubs on

the walk up onto the flat-topped mountain. There were some superb grevillias, hibbertias, cats paws, gastrolobiums, wat-tles, banksias, smokebush, pimelias and a myriad of others we didn’t know the names of. About the only things we missed were orchids, which seemed a while away yet, and the black kangaroo paws up on the mountain which also weren’t out. The track wasn’t too diffi-cult at all, although the section across the top of the mountain, though flat, was very rough and care was needed. We saw a lovely little dragon lizard half-way up and got a couple of photos before he headed for cover.
On return to the car park, we said our goodbyes to Keith Wilcox who had just come up for a day trip and was heading home. Then we moved on slowly along the one way scenic drive, still enjoying the displays of col-our. Just past the Cockleshell Gully picnic area, we came across an echidna on the side of the road and stopped to check it out. Nordine and Delanie had not seen one before so its classic attempt to ‘dig in’ was rather rudely, but carefully, interrupted so that some photos could be taken. Then we left it to get back to its lovely meal of ants that it had un-covered under a disturbed stick.
The convoy then completed the scenic drive and headed into Jurien Bay to refuel – both the cars at the servo and ourselves at the bakery – be-fore driving the relatively short distance north to the lovely campsite at Sandy Point. It was only mid-afternoon when we got there so we didn’t have any trouble getting good spots in proximity to one another.
After setting up camp, it was time to hit the beach. Jo and I had been here in early January when it was warm but very windy. In contrast, this time it was cooler but almost still, and quite idyllic. Jo even had a swim.

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS
A few of the others tried their luck with fishing, including Adrian who took to the bay on his pedal-power kayak. None of them had much luck catching dinner but it was a great way to enjoy the magnificent sur-rounds.
As the sun began to set, we returned to camp for nibbles and then din-ner. Those of us who finished first then sat around watching the later efforts as we gathered under the lights in the absence of a fire, which we were not allowed to have. Still, being relatively calm, the cool night air didn’t bite too much, and it was a small price to pay for being able to en-joy such lovely spot after a great day. Many thanks to John for his or-ganisation and leadership.

15 August 2010 Camp Sandy Point
The sun raised at 7:00 no clouds on the sky and most of all us were ready up at 8:00 for breakfast. It was a beautiful morning and there was sufficient time to dry the tents and stuffing all our gear back into the car. John and Thea went early fishing but unfortu-nately they didn't catch any fishes. We left the camp on time at 9:30 and headed to North Head on a sandy track. (Access to this area is by 4WD only.) North Head is a spectacular headland lo-cated north of Jurien Bay. (The club has visited North Head on the Green Head Trip some time ago at the end of February 2009.)
We were looking for Sea Lions as they are a major attrac-
tion in the Jurien Bay Marine Park. Unfortunately we
couldn't see any.
We saw two concrete bunkers and weren't sure about their signifi-cance. Research offered the following information: "During World War II, it was rumoured that Japanese submarines were using the sheltered waters of Jurien Bay to surface and recharge. The
Page 21
SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC
Australian Army constructed a road into Jurien and stationed soldiers in concrete bunkers near North Head, at the northern extremity of the Bay."
The bunkers served as shelters for the Royal Australian Air Force. The station was set up in the early 1940s by the RAAF to detect the presence of any Japanese invaders along this very vulnerable strip of coastline.
At the highest point is a memorial erected in memory of the late Robert Murray Bartle an active member of the skin-diving fraternity, who was killed by a shark in the vicinity.
From here, looking north, we saw many beautiful rocky bays and beaches. This coastline invites you to swimming and snorkelling. However, most of us thought the temperature of the water was not suited to swim; but Jo couldn't resist going for a swim.
No matter where you drive there is an abundance of interesting plants to see in this area.
So what to do next? John suggested two options: 1 Stockyard Gully or 2 Drovers Cave.
The Stockyard Gully NP (1500 ha) is east of Leeman and bit fur-ther away than Drovers Cave NP (2600 ha), which located six kilo-metres north east of Jurien.
The group set off to Drovers cave as some of us had already been to the Stockyard Gully.
The cave was well known to early explorers and stock-men. Its proximity to the Canning Stock Route meant that it was visited by drovers and hence the name.
We took a track off Jurien Road and followed a narrow dense and overgrown track.
Page 22
SUBARU 4WD CLUB NEWS
The track seems to be rarely used and varied from narrow dense to very soft sand and some fairly hard rock. It's only suitable for drivers who don't worry about scratches on the vehicles.
We came to the end of the track which ended at Drovers Cave. Swarms of bees were hovering above the cave entry and some of us were scared getting attacked by bees.
John, not worrying, was the first to decent into the cave. Soon other followed. It was completely dark and we needed to wait until some came down with proper torches.
There was no water in the cave but a watermark was clearly visi-ble. We walked quite a distance until we had to crawl to get further. None of us were keen to move further
When everybody finished the cave exploration we had lunch. A lit-tle effort was required to turn all vehicles back in the opposite di-rection and off we drove to Jurien.
The Drovers Cave National Park is unsuitable for picnicking. Walk-ing is limited as vegetation under story is very thick in areas.
Here is a link to the website: Cave Destruction through Manage-ment
http://wasg.iinet.net.au/drovers.html
A short stop at Jurien's foreshore for another group photo and then back on the Indian Ocean Drive to Perth. Unfortunately the road was closed and it seems work on the Lancelin to Cervantes section of Indian Ocean Drive is not yet finished. John suggested to De-lanie and Nordine to take the opportunity to visit the Pinnacles. We headed back to the Brand Hwy and all arrive safely in Perth
We finished a wonderful day and thanks to John for a well organ-ised trip
