Boasting 11 upperclassmen and bringing in a highly touted recruiting class, the 2009 Vanderbilt soccer team appears poised for a breakout year .
The Commodores got off to a fast start in 2008, winning their first five games . However, they went 3-7-1 in Southeastern Conference play to just miss out on the conference tournament, with five of those losses coming by just one goal . Vanderbilt finished with an overall record of 9-8-2, the team’s third winning season in the last four years, but short of the postseason and the goals the program has under head coach Ronnie Woodard .
Woodard believes this group has the desire and skill to turn things around . The team trained with such intensity during the spring that she remarked that they were the hardest-working group of Vanderbilt soccer players she’s had in her tenure in Nashville .
“What I saw was a really great commit-ment from our team this spring to their individual game, which in turn is going to bring us together as a better team,” Woo-dard said . “All of our hard work that we’ve put in the weight room, all of our hard work that we’ve put in on the soccer field,
and all of our hard work that we’ve put in during games has got to come together and get a result, and this is the year we believe we will do that .”
Star juniors, and twin sisters, Molly and Megan Kinsella return after leading Vanderbilt’s offensive attack last season . Molly, a midfielder was named first-team All-SEC after an outstanding sophomore year and led the team in scoring for the second straight season, scoring eight goals and adding four assists, including a hat trick against Mississippi State . She led the conference in shots and shots on goal, and her six goals in league play were good for third in the SEC .
Even after a stellar sophomore season, the staff expects Molly to be even more dominant in 2009 .
“We expect her to really have a coming-out year,” Woodard said . “I think she’s had two very good years, but I think her improvement over the spring season is going to propel her into a very powerful player in the SEC .”
Megan was second on the team last year with four goals and three assists, both career highs . Like her sister, she started all 19 games last season .
“Megan made a great turn last year . I think she established herself as a dangerous attacking player that had tremendous speed and agility,” Woodard said . “She’s improved her individual game, made herself less predictable as a wide player and provided a spark for us throughout the spring .”
Midfielder Megan Forester played in 17 games with nine starts last season, and had one goal and one assist . As one of Vanderbilt’s two seniors, she will be looked to for leadership .
“I fully expect Megan to be a great leader for us and to be an impact player,” Woo-dard said .
Redshirt junior Nicole Lukens, a forward, started all 19 games in 2008 and scored three goals . She also added one assist, and Woodard expects her to be an indis-pensable part of the offense in 2009 .
“I think Nicole is one of the most coura-
geous players that we have on our team,” Woodard said . “The types of runs that she makes are beneficial to the success of scoring goals on our team . She has an incredible work rate, and I think that she has a fearlessness to her that allows her to create opportunities for us as a team .”
Junior Megan Eddings was one of six Vanderbilt players to start all 19 games last season . Her coach describes her as a feisty player on the field and she should again be a mainstay of the defense .
Sophomore Candace West was named to the All-SEC Freshman team in 2008 after posting 10 starts and playing in 17 games, finishing third on the team with nine points on three goals and three assists . A forward last season, West made a transition during the spring to midfielder and has made her game even more dynamic .
Redshirt sophomore Mary Rachel (M .R .) Reynolds returns after sitting out last season with a medical redshirt . She was named to the SEC All-Freshman team on defense in 2007 and expects to not just regain but surpass the form she’s already demonstrated .
“We certainly welcome M .R . back,” Woo-dard said . “I saw a tremendous improve-ment in her confidence this spring, and I

think the return of M .R . to our backline is really going to provide a more solid foun-dation for us .”
Lindsay Ratterman enters her fourth year in the program and started in 11 games last year and played in 16 overall, scoring two goals .
Redshirt freshman Kate Goldin is com-ing off back-to-back knee surgeries but trained hard during the spring . Blessed with great speed, she will provide added support for an already deep backfield .
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel returns after posting five shutouts last season to give her nine in her career . With two full seasons under her belt, her confidence has grown drastically and Vanderbilt coaches fully expect a well-defended net in 2009 .
“In order for Vanderbilt soccer to be suc-cessful, we have to have a great goal-keeper,” Woodard said . “We’ve invested a lot of time and energy and confidence in Rachel, and we expect her to step up this year . She possesses all the tools . She’s got a great athletic build, she’s a great shot stopper and she is a hard worker .”
Sophomore Elizabeth Lillie saw action in every game last season as a reserve in the backfield . She scored one goal and added one assist .
Junior Hannah Gonzales made 15 starts and played in every game in a transitional season for her, as she moved from playing forward to outside back . She tied for sec-ond on the team with three assists .
Sophomore Emily Grant played in all but two games last year as a reserve midfield-er and had three assists .
Sophomore Lyndsey Wilcox, sister of recent graduate Amy Wilcox, played in 18 games and proved to be an impact player .
Junior Kristine Chaklos started all 19 games as an outside back last season and demonstrated strong technique and athleticism .
Redshirt sophomore Catherine Wearn returned from injury and scored a goal in her first Vanderbilt match, the game-win-ner against Belmont in the 2008 season opener . She carded five starts on the season, with 13 total appearances .
Sophomore Bridget Lohmuller also saw action in 10 games in the backfield and had an assist .
Junior Katie Dean registered nine starts and 18 total appearances in 2008 and looks to compete for even more playing time this year .
One of the most heralded recruits in school history, Chelsea Stewart headlines the incoming seven-member freshman class . Stewart, a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, played for Canada in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and also was on the U-20 National Team prior to playing for the Commodores . Although mainly a midfielder, she could also be used at forward to take advantage of her unique scoring skills .
“I think Chelsea is going to provide us with a nice spark of energy,” Woodard said . “She is going to bring some international experience to our group, she’s going to bring some competitive spirit to our group, and I think she’s just going to overall im-prove our game .”
C .J . Rhoades, from Danville, Ind . should expect to see significant action at center midfielder this season with the graduation of Katie Schulz . Also competing for time at center midfielder will be local resident Dana Schwartz, a native of Nashville,
Tenn .
Jessica Amlaw, a native of Tarpon Springs, Fla ., gives the team added athletic depth and will spell Bachtel at goalkeeper
Margaux Andrews from Cincinnati, Ohio is a proven scorer and her high school’s all-time assists leader, and will challenge for time at left midfielder .

The Commodores have a 19-game sched-ule in 2009, with eight matches coming against teams that made last year’s NCAA Tournament, six of them from the SEC .
After seeing a drastic improvement in their record in 2008, the Commodores appear to have all the necessary components of talent, athleticism and commitment to return to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 .
“I believe this team can do it,” Woodard said . “I think they’ve got enough tal-ent, I think they’ve got enough grit, and I think they’ve got enough dedication and a sense of pride in wearing a Vanderbilt jersey that they can make that turn .”

Ronnie Woodard is enter-ing her ninth season as the head coach of the Vanderbilt women’s soccer program .
Last season Woodard guided the Commodores to a nine-win season with a team comprised of mainly freshmen and sophomores .
Woodard led Vanderbilt to back to back NCAA tournament appearances in 2005 and 2006 and armed with back-to-back stellar recruiting classes looks forward to continuing the program’s upward progres-sion .
Soccer Buzz tabbed Vanderbilt soccer’s 2006-07 recruiting class as the best in the Central Region and the SEC and ninth best in the country, the highest ever achievement for the program . The 2007-08 class was rated No . 5 in the Central Region and SEC and No . 35 nationally .
After losing the majority of starters from the two NCAA clubs, Vanderbilt fell a notch in 2007 to 6-10-3 overall and 3-6-3 in SEC play . The youthful team was competitive through-out the year with six of the losses by just a goal, including three in overtime .
In 2006 Vanderbilt went 10-4-7 overall and tied for second in the SEC with a 6-3-2 mark in league play .
The team also advanced into NCAA play for the second straight year, an
achievement that had not been done at the school since the 1997-98 sea-sons .
In 2005, Vanderbilt sported a 16-3-3 record, which more than doubled the number of wins from the previous two seasons combined . This accom-plishment did not go unnoticed by her confer-ence peers, as she was named SEC Co-Coach of the Year . In addition, Soc-cer Buzz also named her Coach of the Year .
The 2005 season, which ended in a dramatic double-overtime shootout against Samford in the first round of the tourna-ment, marked the team’s second-strongest perfor-mance since 1998 .
The 2005 team notched the program’s best-ever winning percentage ( .795), ended the season ranked among the country’s top 21 in three separate polls, first in the Central region by Soccer Buzz magazine, and was second in the na-tion for shutout percentage (0 .73) .
Woodard has made great strides in building the Commodore soccer pro-gram back up in her eight years here .
Since her start with the Commodores in 2001, she has brought the team steadily closer to becom-ing an elite national team, rising from 5th in the SEC
East in 2001 and 2002, to 4th in 2003 and 2004, 3rd in 2005 and tied for second in 2006 .
Woodard has also taken the ’Dores to the SEC tour-nament four times . And, most recently, her team advanced to back-to-back NCAA tournaments in 2005 and 2006 for the first time in her Vanderbilt career .
She also takes great pride in developing the all-around student-athlete .
In 2005-06, her team won Vanderbilt’s coveted “Tol-bert Cup,” named in honor of Vanderbilt’s former national track champion Ryan Tolbert . The Tolbert Cup is presented annually to the varsity team that sports the best combina-tion of athletic, academic, and community service success .
Woodard is a creative coach, and she is widely regarded as an outstanding motivator . Four years ago,

the Commodores built an effective team bond by adopting a unique “pirate” theme that gained signifi-cant momentum with her players .
As a player, Woodard was the goalkeeper on the inaugural Duke Blue Devil team after receiving the program’s first-ever schol-arship . She still ranks high in several statistical cat-egories of the Duke record book, including leading the school in goals against average for a season and a career, and is third in career shutouts . In addi-tion to lettering four years, Woodard found success in the classroom as well –
she earned academic All-ACC honors while serving as team captain and went on to earn an undergradu-ate degree in sociology from Duke in 1992 and later received a master’s degree in counseling in 1998 from UNC-Charlotte .
Prior to coming to Vanderbilt in 2001, Woodard held coaching positions at Duke Uni-versity, North Carolina State University, North Carolina-Charlotte, and has been actively involved as a coach in the Olympic Development Program, a national identification and development program for the country’s top players .
She has served as a state ODP head coach in South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee and is cur-rently one of five ODP Age Group Coaches in Region III .
Woodard has also dedi-cated her time coaching at many camps and youth soccer organizations .
“When I got here, I was a very young coach in terms of experience,” Woodard said . “Coming here was an enormous step for me emotionally and it chal-lenged me . Every class that I had, whether I re-cruited them or not, made me a stronger and better coach . I think that my
philosophy has changed completely, I think that my ability to relate to players has changed, I think that my vision has changed and I owe it all to the play-ers that were here . I’ve matured a lot these past seven years by diving right in and being over my head early . But eight years later I feel like both myself as a coach and this program are ready to do great things .”
Woodard and her hus-band Tom are expecting their first child, Thomas Woodard IV at the end of August .

DUO EARN ALL-SEC PLAUDITSSophomore midfielder Molly Kinsella and freshman forward Candace West received All-Southeastern Conference plaudits the league announced today .
Kinsella started in all 19 games and led the Com-modores in scoring with eight goals and four as-sists . The goal total was tied for fourth most in the conference and was a career high for the Memphis native . She led the league in shots (84), shots per game (4 .42), shots on goal (40) and shots on goal per game (2 .11) . Six of her goals came in league action, which was third best in the league .
“Molly is an incredible athlete and a tremendous competitor,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie . “She is the cornerstone to the future of Vanderbilt soccer .”
West started in 10 of 17 games as a true freshman and finished third on the team in scoring with three goals and three assists (nine points) . She had a two-goal outing in the Commodores 4-1 win over Tennessee Tech on Sept . 7 .
“Candace is a great young talent and provided us creativity on our attack with great technical abil-ity,” said Coveleskie . “She should blossom into a dominant player in our league and along with Molly, she will help lead Vanderbilt back to great success .”
RYER EARNS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDSenior Taylor Ryer was named to the Southeastern Conference’s Soccer Community Service Team .
The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports . The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts .
Ryer has volunteered at a variety of places in her four years at Vanderbilt . The New Hampshire na-tive worked with Kids Zone (athletes with inner city kids from Nashville), Habitat for Humanity and also
volunteered on a research study at Vanderbilt Chil-dren’s Hospital . She also participated in the Jingle Bell Walk/Run for Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee and has donated items to the local Ronald Mc-Donald House . Ryer also volunteered at VU soccer camps over the years and participated in the Soc-cer for a Cure initiative with the Commodores .
Ryer, a SEC Academic Honor Roll member the last two years, will gradiuate with a degree in Human and Organizational Development in the spring .
“Taylor is a hard working, kind hearted and gener-ous young woman,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie . “She is diligent and will achieve every goal she sets for herself in the fu-ture . We are very fortunate to have had her as part of our soccer program for four years .”

THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFER-
ENCE HAS CONTINUED ITS RISE
AS ONE OF THE TOP CONFER-
ENCES IN WOMEN’S SOCCER IN
ITS 17-YEAR HISTORY
The Southeastern Conference has continued its rise as one of the top conferences in women’s soccer . The 2008 women’s soccer season reaffirmed the SEC’s prominence in the country .
Six teams from the SEC were invited to the NCAA Tournament . Au-burn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee all made the 64-team field . The six teams combined for a record of 3-6 with the Gators advancing to the third round .
The SEC now has a 44-53-8 ( .457) NCAA Tournament record in 56 appearances . SEC women’s soccer will begin its 17th season in the year of 2009 deeply rooted in the national scene of collegiate soccer . Since the SEC initiated women’s soccer as a varsity sport in 1993, the sport’s popularity has grown through the country and especially in the Southeast . In 1998, the SEC had its breakout season with Florida winning the conference’s first NCAA title in women’s soccer in just the program’s fourth year of existence . The league led the nation with six NCAA Tournament teams that year, an accomplishment which firmly inserted the SEC as one the major conferences in women’s soc-cer . The SEC also made bigger strides in its television coverage with three regular season matches and the SEC Tournament championship match shown live on the SEC-TV package . In 2003, the SEC Soccer Tournament moved to a neutral site in Orange Beach, Alabama, signi-fying the growth of the sports’ popularity . In 2006, SEC-TV’s women’s soccer coverage was increased to four regular-season matches, in ad-dition to the SEC Tournament championship match .
In 2009, SEC teams will make more than 15 live television appear-ances during the regular season . That is three times the amount of appearances from previous seasons .

Community involvement has long been a hallmark of the Vanderbilt women’s soccer program, a tradition that has continued under Head Coach Ronnie Woo-dard .
Emblematic of the team’s commitment to community service, the program was awarded the 2005 Tolbert Cup, given annually to the Vanderbilt varsity team that has the best combination of winning percent-age, community service and cumulative grade point average .
Both Woodard and Assistant Coach Cristin Czubik pride themselves in their involvement with Nashville-area youth . Czubik currently coaches a girls’ un-der-16 soccer team in the Nashville suburb of Brent-wood and helped pilot in 2005 what is known as the Vanderbilt University Women’s Soccer Little Sisters Program . The team adopted 23 youth soccer players from an under-9 girls club, which Czubik coached at the time . The players were each paired with a Vanderbilt soccer player to create a Big Sister/Little Sister tandem .
Additionally, the soccer program runs four different summer soccer camps for youth ages five through 18 and which are open to players of varying skill levels . Both the Little Sisters program and the annual Vanderbilt summer soccer camps are aimed at both cultivating relationships with youth in the Nashville area and allowing current Vanderbilt players to give back to the community .
“Some of the most important parts of our jobs is contributing to the community, getting to know the players in the community and allowing our players at Vanderbilt the opportunity to become role models for young girls,” Woodard said . “Putting our players in front of the youth of the community allows them to get to know each other and allows our Vanderbilt soccer players to become real people and people that the youth of the community can identify with .”
