The University of Toledo has made a significant commitment to improve the human condition by taking a leadership role in regional economic development. To enable and strengthen these efforts, the University has taken major steps to build up the technology transfer program by adding new staff members to (i) assist in identifying and licensing new technologies and (ii) help develop new spin-off businesses. Lloyd Jacobs, M.D., President of the University, has clearly articulated that the technology transfer group is a core University unit performing highly valued functions with an established ability to identify and license new technologies and create spin-off businesses that result in jobs, economic development and wealth creation. In 2008, Innovation Associates reported in a project funded by the National Science Foundation, based on data from the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) that, among US universities, UT ranked 6th in executing licenses and 7th in launching start-up businesses, when taking the level of research expenditures into account — an indication of a very high level productivity in the translation of research into economic development. The US average for invention disclosures per $10 MM of research expenditures is 4.3. UT is significantly higher, increasing from 5.8 to 16 in the past seven years. The number of new license agreements per $10 MM of research expenditures has also increased steadily from 2003 to 2009, from 1.2 to 3.8, versus a national average of 0.4. According to AUTM, the average US University spins-off one business for every $100 MM in research expenditures. At two per year, UT is four times the national average and at three per year, the results in 2007 to 2009, UT is six times the national average. UT now has 16 active spin-off businesses, generating about 100 local technology positions. Several have attracted $1 million + in third party validation funding. Three spin-offs have received funding from Regional Growth Partnership’s Rocket Ventures and four have qualified for the Regional Growth Partnership’s Ignite Program. We look forward to continuing to work closely with the faculty on innovative and entrepreneurial ideas. We believe that the faculty’s continued participation will help us increase UT’s state-wide and national profile as an innovation system that produces new discoveries, new products and/or services, new firms, jobs, and wealth creation.
