The garden was started in spring 2009, funded by a $500 grant from the Lauffer Student Council plus donations valued at $1,500. Students designed the garden, cleared the land, built raised beds, and installed a drip system. They planted all species as seedlings.
Students are planning this year’s garden, which helps them learn about desert ecosystems, sustainable agriculture, building practices, mathematics, nutrition, and physical activity. Seventh-grade science teacher Noah Mickey-Colman leads the project.
