In September 2007, Specialized Bicycles

collaborated with Google and Goodby, Silverstein

& Partners to launch the Pedal-Powered Machine

Contest. The contest challenged inventors,

entrepreneurs, students and tinkerers of all kinds

to create a pedal-powered solution for offsetting

climate change. The results were greater and farther

reaching than expected.

Out of all the entries coming in from across the

globe, the deserving prize went to a five-person

team of designers from IDEO who invented the

Aquaduct, a mobile vehicle for transporting and

filtering drinking water. Today, the Aquaduct is being

considered for real-world application—an innovation

with the potential to change the lives of over one

billion people in the world who live without access

to clean drinking water.

Witnessing the power of the bicycle as a vehicle for

change continues to push us to make even bigger

strides. Using the Globe line as fodder for further en-

vironmental and social activism, we partnered with

Bicycling Magazine’s BikeTown and NATO to donate

50 Globes to a local orphanage in war-torn Afghani-

stan and to the Afghani National Cycling Federation.

Our Globe bicycles have always been the most viable

tool for commuting and general transportation be-

cause of their utility, accessibility and reliability, but

in parts of the world where owning a car is a luxury

enjoyed by few, these bikes are a blessing and an

opportunity.

Now more than ever, bikes are becoming a

necessity for sustaining the environment, surviving

inflated fuel costs and staying healthy. Compelled

by the philosophy, Innovate or Die, we at Specialized

continue to adapt our Globe bicycles to inspire every

Though similar to a casual sit position, our San Francisco bikes deliver “more aggressive” positioning than any other Globe models. A steeper head tube angle and flat bar provide more nimble handling for quick maneuvers and lane changes, and a slacker seat tube angle gives you all the leverage you need at the green light.

This year, our Vienna and Vienna Deluxe bikes achieve a “sit-in” geometry, via longer top tubes and shorter stems, that truly optimizes your riding height for the most natural positioning possible. Our Carmel bikes use what we like to call “ground control” geometry, which technically means a longer wheelbase, long chainstays and slack seat tube angle. This kind of geometry will let you touch your feet comfortably to the ground without rising from the saddle, making your start and stop as smooth and easy as possible.
