In traditional Chinese philosophy, geographic orienta-
tions can be divided into five cardinal points (or Wu-
fang in Chinese): North, South, East, West and center,
and is related to the Chinese Wu-Xing, usually trans-
lated as the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire and
earth. The Buddhists believe that the universe has no
limits or boundaries in time or space; in each cardinal
direction there is a world that is under one Buddha’s
charge, making five Buddhas altogether, and hence the
Wu-fang Buddhas.
The making of Wu-fang Buddhas statues is a sacred
and meticulous process. They are made from materi-
als collected from the most famous Chinese mountains
and holy Buddhism mounts, blended with water of the
Yellow River and the Yangtze River, and then hand-
made by Shaolin Abbot Shi Yongxin and the monastery
monks according to the traditional Buddhist formula
and techniques. Upon completion, Abbot Shi Yongxin
invited accomplished Buddhist monks from home and
abroad to attend the Shaolin Charity Event and Con-
secration Ceremony of Wu-fang Buddha Statues. Dur-
ing that period, over 60 distinguished Buddhist monks
from the Buddhist community worldwide visited Shao-
lin Temple and presided over the ritual ceremony. The
Consecration Ceremony of Wu-fang Buddha Statues
was the largest in scale to date, and a great event of
cultural exchange in Chinese Buddhism. 49 venerable
elders and abbots participated in the 49-day ceremony,
along with 5,000 monks from around the world.
Holy Statues of Wu-fang Buddhas represent the unique,
outstanding characteristics and of Shaolin culture, and
embody the spirit of Chinese Chan and Shaolin culture
integrated with Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and
the time-honored traditions in Chinese culture.
五方寶佛共制作2547套,與五行相配,具有護身護宅的功

A total of 2547 sets of Wu-fang Buddha Statues were
