The economic recession has hit the horse industry very hard. Not just in Canada, but world wide. My recent trip to the World Breeding Federation General Assembly in Copenhagen afforded me the opportunity to speak to people from all over the world about market conditions and to attend two Warmblood auctions in Germany. It will come as no surprise that the slow sales and low prices which we are experiencing are pretty much universal Registrations are down with all stud books. Guesstimates range from 15% to 25% and reported breedings seem to have followed suit. It is hard to say when and how the industry will turn around, but there are some positive signs. The service end of the industry does not seem to have suffered so much. Show entries in Canada remain quite high, farriers are still hard to find, boarding stables are full and lessons continue a pace. David Holmes from the FEI reported, to the WBFSH, that equestrian sport is undergoing rapid growth. This should mean that at some point, when buyer confidence returns, demand will blossom, perhaps ballooning in response to deferred demand that is taking place today. What will the supply situation be if registrations and breedings are down? Which part of the market will recover first and what will be in demand: young prospects or finished horses? It is hard to say what the impact of the recession will be in the long term and how it may change our industry. This is certainly a time to take stock of our situation, consider long term goals and plan for the future. This is true for each of us as individual breeders, but it is equally true for our collective organization. This is exactly what the CWHBA is doing. As you will read in this issue we have initiated a strategic planning process that, we hope, will clarify our goals and challenges and define strategies to meet them over the next three or four years. Strategic plans are not static; they are a dynamic response to our circumstances and our needs. We are looking forward to using the strategic planning process to enter into meaningful dialogue with our provincial chapters and members to ensure that we are meeting their needs and those of the market place. Unfortunately the horse industry, although large, continues to lack cohesion sufficient to get widespread community or government attention and support. That means we must help ourselves to get through these difficult times. Our membership numbers are up in 2009, once again showing we have loyal and dedicated members. Working together now and in the future, as we have in the past, will be the key to our continued success. Chris Gould

From the editor’s deskThis is the 8th Issue of the Breeder’s Digest since its first issue was produced by Tim Millard in August 2006. This format has taken off and what we are hearing from the members is that they really look forward to receiving it.

I would like to welcome Shannon Smith of Nth Degree Solutions, to our team. Shannon did the fabulous layout for this issue.

Of the 2000 copies that we print, 1000 are mailed out to the membership and other interested parties. The rest are taken to Trade Fairs such as Spruce Meadows, the Mane Event, the RAWF in Toronto, and international events in Dubai, Las Vegas for the World Cup, and the 2010 WEG in Kentucky.

This is a great service provided by the CWHBA for its members only, with current memberships, updated addresses and emails. This is a perfect place for you to promote your farm and your horses. We are always looking for great news, personal stories and advertisers. This is where we really need the members input. If you have an idea, know of anyone with a story or a product, please send them our way. All submissions can be made to [email protected]

Thankyou to all who have contributed to this issue Colleen Embree-Jay

In Memory:

For many years, Judith McCartney and her magazine, Horse & Country, were strong supporters of the CWHBA. It is with great sadness that we received the news of Judith’s passing, after her long battle with cancer. She was a lovely person, always smiling and warm, who constantly helped to promote the CWHBA. She will be greatly missed.

StIletto danCeR, CWhba on [Can] 3796-04 G (elUte x ladY SeSSIon)We went to Devon again this year, with ‘Stella’ Stiletto Dancer in the  5 year old FEI classes.

She was super. We placed 1st in the material class for 5 year olds, and a 5th in the 5 Year Old FEI class, and a 4th in the Amercian Breed 5 Year old FEI class.

She is such a wonderful mare with such a great temperament I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to bred my mare to Elute. We plan on going to Wellington Florida for the winter dressage show season with her.

She’s probably mature enough now that if someone were to be interested in her as a hunter/jumper prospect I’m sure she’s got the ability. We’ve done a bit of free jumping with her last year. She’s got a pretty steady rhythm over the jumps and a great ground covering canter.  She’s 17 hh now and seems to like the jumping. Stephanie Jensen is still training/riding her for me.

eRYnn ballaRd named CavaloR ‘athlete oF the month’ FoR maRChOttawa, Ontario - Jump Canada has named Erynn Ballard the CAVALOR ‘Athlete of the Month’ for March.

Ballard of Hillsburgh, ON, won the $20,000 Adequan 7 & 8 Year Old Young Jumper Final at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, on March 29. Riding Simply Ahorn, owned by Olivia Mickus, Ballard topped the prestigious class of 58 starters with a double clear performance in a jump-off time of 32.451 seconds.

Bred in Canada by Turtle Creek Farms, Simply Ahorn is an eight-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding sired by the Dutch Warmblood stallion, Ahorn, and out of an Oldenburg dam, Simply Irresistable. Beginning his career as a four-year-old, Simply Ahorn has been carefully developed through the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series.

“Simply Ahorn was geared up all season to compete in the Final by jumping in 1.40 m classes,” said Ballard, 28, who operates Looking Back Farm with her parents, David and Sandi Ballard. “The Final was the biggest young horse class of the circuit, and the victory was a really great win for this horse’s résumé.”

“Cavalor is known world-wide, and it is very nice to have their support for Jump Canada programs,” she added.

As the CAVALOR ‘Athlete of the Month’ for March, Ballard receives a gift certificate from title sponsor CAVALOR Inc.

CAVALOR Inc. is the exclusive North American licensee of the CAVALOR brand and the CAVALOR products from Nutriquine NV. CAVALOR Inc.’s mission is to organize and manage the distribution of CAVALOR products, promote the brand, and establish partnerships to locally manufacture the CAVALOR products, all in North America. by Colleen Jay

JAY HAYES HAS RIDDEN IN 2 OLYMPIC GAMES, 1 WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES, 6 WORLD CUP FINALS, ON 30 NATION’S CUP TEAMS FOR CANADA AND COUNTLESS GRAND PRIX AND MINI GRAND PRIX.

And these are just the highlights of a very accomplished career.

Most of us associate the name Jay Hayes with Zucarlos, Flipper, Alibaba, Raven, Diva and many others. But do you also think of Shawn, Lauren, Regan and Ainsley? This is Jay’s immediate support team that makes them all the success they are today. Did you also know they have been breeding Canadian Warmbloods for over ten years?

I bumped into the family at Spruce Meadows and got the idea to feature them in the Breeder’s Digest. . I would like to thank Shawn & Jay for being so helpful in putting this article together.

Jay started his riding career on a cowpony, at the home farm in Rocky Hill, Connecticut.

His dad, who loved going to auctions, bought Jay his first jumping horse. It was a 2 yr old Arab and a wild thing. Jay took lessons from Hugh Kerrigen of Farmington, Con. He was a well know trainer at the time. Jay was 12 yrs old and after going into his first walk trot horse show, he got serious about riding,. He was coached by an Ex- USET Jumper Rider by the name of Nills Lomerin and then got really serious about riding when he started jumping under R.W. Mutch .

In 1977, Jay was studying in pre-veterinary courses at University. He was at a show in Devon, Pa. when he saw a guy riding a horse, that was such a beautiful rider and doing great things with his horse. He said, “I think that he’s a genius and I’m going to train with him.” That guy was Mac Cone. They have been friends ever since, not to mention now brother-in-laws.

In his second season with Mac, there was a working student at the stable by the name of Shawn Carpenter. Shawn had traveled to train with her mother’s Canadian bred, French Leave (Bronco Buster) and Classic (Greek Jab) and to be with her sister Brenley, who was competing with Shakespere (The Schriber). These horses were all out of the same mare, Celebrity Geeka and all of them went on to fabulous careers in the U.S. Jay said, “One day I helped pull off Shawn’s boots, and the rest is history”

Over the next 4 years at university, Jay played Inter-collegiate Polo. Lauren was born and graduation came in 1980. Jay was on a waiting list to continue his studies in Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. The young family spent that summer in Canada with Shawn’s family and stayed.

It was in 1984, that Sue Burns asked Jay to manage the Sutton Horse Show in Ontario. The job lasted 3 years and it was a terrific venue back then.

In 1987, Shawn and Jay were living in Kettleby, where they had a great view of the 400 Hwy. They were discussing where all these cars went to & from every weekend, when Shawn said Collingwood. They decided right then, that that is where they should move the horse show to. For the next 21 years, Shawn & Jay Hayes along with the Chapmans and Petersons, ran the fantastic 2 week long Collingwood Horse Show. In 2008 that Show moved to its new home in Ottawa. It is their middle daughter, Ainsley, who spends 90% of her time managing the show and occasionally finds time to ride. The first year of that show proved to be very successful with over 500 entries and in 2009 the 2 week long event saw almost 700 horses.

Regan is their youngest daughter. She also shows successfully in the Jumpers. Of course this is as long as dad doesn’t sell the horses on her. Regan has ventured out as well to start a fashion business.

Lauren is their oldest daughter and the most accomplished rider, having ridden on the Canadian Team in 2002 and continuing a very successful career in the show ring.

Shawn’s mother, Lucille, started a real tradition in the 60’s, while living in the west with the family. They were riding and breeding horses and ran a Tack Shop. When they moved east, the tradition continued with Shawn looking after the breeding end of the Hayes family business.

They felt there were not enough good stallions in Canada that were competing and breeding. First they had the famous Zucarlos, then Flipper by Landgraff and the Polish stallion Ali Baba, who passed on all too soon. They also realized that goods mares are paramount in a successful breeding plan and began to build a strong broodmare band.

Now, they import mostly frozen semen. They like the critical eye of the Dutch breeding program and the bloodlines of Libero, Lux, Numero Uno and Ustinov, most of whom are or were owned by Hans Horn in Holland, who Jay bought Zucarlos from in 1985.

The wonderful thing about being an international rider is that you are on the front lines of seeing what the best bloodlines are producing. The Hayes family is right there and they know what works. Personally, Jay likes, “a small blood horse, balanced, careful and with a quality gallop.”

So the Hayes family is breeding with world class bloodlines and registering their horses with the CWHBA. They also have the ability to train their own young stock?

The first work that is done with the young prospects is when they are 2 years old. Over a period of 2 weeks, the young homebreds are saddled, bridled and lunged. Then they are ridden lightly at the walk and trot before being put back out to pasture for another year.

At 3 – 4 yrs, they are taken to Florida for the winter, where they are worked everyday. The horses do not show but are exposed to the show grounds and when ready may go into a warmup or small hunter class. As 5 year olds they will start in the jumper ring.

In 2009 Jay rode Wonderboy (Lupicor) to be Champion Ontario 6 Year Old. Lauren’s recent marriage to French rider Johan Letimonier was celebrated by Johann riding the Canadian Warmblood, Troy, ON [CAN]6078-03 G, (Indoctro x Flipper), to be the Canadian Champion 6 Year Old. “We were really proud when Troy won the Championships. He is the second generation of our breeding program and we trained, competed and have recently sold him to the Harris family to continue with.”

When asked is everything for sale? Jay replied, it’s a struggle, there is a limited market. Until they are 5 yrs the market is not there. It’s really there for 6 yrs and older. We give them experience and make them into what they will do best.”

Most of the Hayes’ horses are registered as Canadian Warmbloods? They are very supportive of the Canadian breeding program. Jay says, “There has been an evolution in the breeding program in Canada. A lot more people are doing the right thing now.” He believes, his newest mount, the Canadian bred Liverot, (Landslide) is a prime World Class Jumping horse from World Class breeding. Breeding takes patience, manpower and a willingness to sit on the capital for such a long time. With the transient life of showing, when raising babies, we need a family behind us. Every year, our migration to Florida is getting bigger and more successful”

Success does not come without perseverance and focus. When it comes to Canadian success stories, the Hayes family is living the dream!

CanadIan WaRmbloodS ShIne In CUP ClaSSeS at the 2009 RoYal aGRICUltURal WInteR FaIR In toRonto Congratulations to Lindsay Bradshaw and her CWHBA gelding GUCCI who is the 2009 Lieutenant Governor’s Cup winner from an impressive field of 20 entries. GUCCI, NS[CAN]6645-06 G (Voltaire x B-Olive/ Rio Grande); owned by Lindsay Bradshaw and bred by Paul Johnston of Nova Scotia was ridden by Erynn Ballard.

Congratulations also go out to APPLE PRINCE, ON[CAN]6642-06 G (Autograph x Jesse White Bread xx/Bold Revenue), owned & bred by Stefanie Brueseke. Apple Prince was 7th in the Lieutenant Governor’s Cup and 9th in the Governor General’s Cup. He also placed 2nd in the Finals of the Canadian Future Event Horse 3 year old in September, held as part of the Canadian Young Event Horse Series.

Other horses in the prestigious Cup classes with CWHBA ties are:

BELLAGIO, CSHA, by VDL Ulando H (CWHBA) owned by Wendy and Tom O’Keefe, won the 2009 Governor General’s Cup from a large field of 21 entries.

LEXI, CSHA, placed 5th in the Governor General’s Cup by the CWHBA Approved stallion Ikoon; owned and bred by Jean Casselman.

SEAWORTHY FF, RPSI, who placed 3rd in the Lieutenant Governor’s Cup and 6th in the Governor General’s Cup, is by Fieldstone Farm’s CWHBA-Licensed stallion Sailor’s Spirit. Seaworthy FF is owned by Anita Lancaster and bred by Shannon Smith of Fieldstone Farm.

the 2009 CanadIan JUmPeR develoPment SeRIeS This year’s series ended with the CWHBA registered Troy (Indoctro x Pheobe / Flipper) BO: North Ridge Farm, R: Johan Letimonier, as the Champion of the Six Year Old Division. The 5 year old Division saw Masquerade K, as the winner, (Popeye K x Graciana / Grannus) BO:Karneef Equestrian Farms. Placing 3rd in the Division was Colorado (Indoctro x Sil / Cavalier) BO: South Shore Farms.

The series is focused on Young Horse development for jumping, and not on Canadian Bred criteria. A goodly number of horses represented European registries, and it is unknown if they were imported or born in Canada. For Canadian Warmblood horses to achieve such excellent results when faced with breeding from around the world it proves that the breeders are heading in the right direction. When one also factors in the size of Canada, and the East-West competition structure, it becomes even more of a challenge. Congratulations to all the Riders, owners and breeders who competed in the 2009 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series.

CWhba hoRSeS ShoW theIR StUFF at the YoUnG event hoRSe ComPetItIon at RebeCCa FaRm2009-07-22 - Rebecca Farm, Kalispell, Montana: Canadian Olympic Team Member, Sandra Donnelly, had a busy competition schedule at The Event at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell, Montana, competing her young horse Gelinas AB-[CAN]3959-04 G in the Spalding Labs/USEA Young Event Horse competition, as well as riding Gelinas and 3 other horses over the weekend in the regular divisions from Novice to CCI*.

The highest score of the day in the YEH divisions was earned by Robyn Fisher of California aboard Rose Sullivan’s ‘Claire de Lune SE’ (Contendor - L’Vienna Z) in the 5-year-old division. An 81.3% left them well ahead of second place finishers Sandra Donnelly of Canada, aboard her Canadian Warmblood gelding ‘Gelinas’ (Gervantus II - Damiro - Florian) who scored a 75.9%. Erin Spohr and Jens Richter’s ‘Lady Laptop’ rounded out the top three with a 74.8%. Claire de Lune SE has earned the highest score in the U.S. to this date this year, posting a remarkable 87.8% at the YEH at Twin Rivers back in April.

Like Sandra’s Olympic mount Buenos Aires, Gelinas is a homebred as is his dam ‘Real Mc Coy’ AB-[CAN]2069-98 P1 by Damiro, out of the mare ‘Mimosa Girl’ BC-678-94 P2 by Florian and bred by Loukie Schuurman of Oliver, BC. ‘Mimosa Girl’ produced a second foal for Sandra, a 2002 mare by Beach Boy.

Gelinas’ sire, Gervantus II (Grannus - Vollkorn), is already the proven sire of an Olympic Event horse with the Swiss Gamour CH competing successfully at the 2008 Olympics in Hong Kong as the sole Swiss entry. Gervantus II himself competed internationally as a jumper and has many progeny competing at those levels in Europe and Canada. Gervantus II stands at Sigma Warmbloods in Alberta.

The second Canadian Warmblood entry, 5th place went to Sarah Lorenz of Issaquah, WA aboard her Canadian Warmblood gelding ‘Southern Vintage’ (Kingston - Artenstolz - Godewind) who scored 73.5%. “He did very well in a very stiff field of horses,” stated Lorenz. “There were a couple of stallions, and some very, very nice horses brought up from California. He was 5th out of 17. But to get above a score of 70 is doing very well” She went on to explain “If I had known a few more things about showing him in that class, Vinnie could have got a 75. It is all experience!”

Southern Vintage was bred by Mirrabook Farms of Langley, B.C. He started his winning ways early, taking the 2004 B.C. CWHBA Foal Futurity Championship from a large field. Lorenz, a professional coach, purchased ‘Vinnie’ as a foal. She had previously competed another Kingston son, ‘Southern Panache’, to multiple wins at Preliminary level, prior to selling him as a Young Rider mount.

“I’m really pleased with him as an upper level prospect, everyone always asks me if they can have ‘first dibs’ on him if he should come up for sale ... and of course I tell them that I need to keep something for myself and have something nice too!!!” Lorenz added “he’s so strong in the dressage as well.”

The family strength in dressage is not hard to see looking at the pedigree of this talented youngster. His sire ‘Kingston’ was reserve champion at his SPT, being equally indexed for both dressage and jumping. His dam, ‘Southern Reflection’, is a premium mare by the CET long listed FEI dressage stallion ‘Artenstolz’ who also carries a strong versatile pedigree with the Hanoverian lines of ‘Argentan’ and ‘Woehler’. His 2nd dam, ‘Gabrielle’ was by ‘Godewind’, from the famed ‘Gotthard’ line, yet was herself an FEI level dressage horse.

In 2008, ‘Southern Vintage’ was Area VII reserve champion at Beginner Novice, behind another horse owned and competed by Lorenz. In 2009 he has already won 3 Novice events finishing on his dressage score, one of which was an incredible 19.5. The third of those wins was the Rebecca Farm Senior Novice Division C where he finished on his dressage score of 25.3 from a field of 23 entries. Lorenz expects to move him up to Training level by the fall.

Gelinas also competed in the Senior Novice Division D at Rebecca Farm finishing on his dressage score of 30.0 from a field of 22 entries. Donnelly’s busy weekend also included a 12th place finish on Karen Holz’ NZ warmblood mare ‘Stella’; a 10th on Carol Irwin’s ‘Berubay’ AB-[CAN]2893-02 G (Bajazzo - Silver Ring (FR) xx) bred by Donnelly; and a 9th on her own ‘Babe Ruth’ AB-[CAN]5930-03 G (Beach Boy - Arkansas) bred by Touchstone Farm Ltd in the Senior Novice Division A. ‘Babe Ruth’ finished on his dressage score, moving up from 13th after dressage to 9th.

Congratulations to the owners, breeders and riders of these Canadian bred horses!

The Spalding Labs/USEA Young Event Horse winners receive saddle pads from Fleeceworks as well as gorgeous ribbons and other prizes provided by Rebecca Farm. The YEH Series is made possible by Title Sponsor: Spalding Labs; Legacy Sponsors: Stackhouse Saddles, Fleeceworks, and SUCCEED.

eaSteRn CanadIan FRee JUmPInG ChamPIonShIPS The 2009 Eastern Canadian Free Jumping Championship was held on Sunday April 5, 2009 at the Royal Canadian Riding Academy. In all, 20 horses were in the competition with eight 3-year-olds and twelve 4-year-olds competing. The competition was judged by Torchy Millar, Chef d’Equipe of Canada’s national show jumping team.

In the 3-year-old class, the winner was Bovaire (VDL Ulando H/Voltaire) with 26.5 points. Bovaire is a Canadian Warmblood gelding bred by Timothy Millard and Melissa Brown, and owned by Timothy Millard. Bovaire was the only entry in the competition to be awarded two 9’s by esteemed judge Torchy Millar. Second place went to Sheherazade B (Stolzenberg/Graf Grannus) with 23.5 points. This is a Hanoverian filly bred and owned by Michael Boyd. The third place finisher was Be My Valentine HC (VDL Ulando H/Golden Choice xx) with 22.5 points. Be My Valentine is a Canadian Warmblood gelding bred by John Arnold and Sonja Anema, and owned by John Arnold.

In the 4-year-old class the winner was Navarre (Tico Sun/Consul) with 23.25 points. Navarre is a Dutch Warmblood - NA gelding bred by Fran Webber and owned by Lyndsey Wiggins. Second place went to Cattu (Catrick II/For Pleasure) with 21.0 points. Cattu is a Canadian Warmblood mare bred and owned by Crystal and Dale Hawerchuk, long-time patrons of the free jumping competition. In third place was Bella Dona (Foxhunter) with 20.5 points. Bella Dona is a Canadian Warmblood mare bred by Westover Farm, and owned by Melissa Byrne.

Champion of the competition was Bovaire, with the highest overall score of 26.5 points, giving owner Timothy Millard his fourth free jumping Championship in the 6 years the competition has been running. Reserve champion was Michael Boyd’s stunning Sheherazade B, with the second highest score of 23.5 points.

This annual competition is co-hosted by the Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders

Association and the Hanoverian Breeders Club of Eastern Canada. These clubs would like to especially thank the competition’s lead sponsor Uplands Farm and Jennifer Rogers. The competition is named in memory of the Hanoverian show jumper Diva (by Don Juan), owned by Jennifer Rogers, who died last summer tragically after foaling. Diva was a regular on Canada’s show jumping team in the 1990’s, ridden by Jay Hayes. We also would like to thank Merial Canada for their sponsorship, and Rushmount Equine Limited who supplied the jump material.

Presents the 2010 eastern Canadian Free Jumping Championship, Seventh annual Free Jumping CompetitionThe Uplands Farm Eastern Canadian Free Jumping Championship will be held on Sunday March 28, 2010 at the Royal Canadian Riding Academy. The competition is jointly organized by the Hanoverian Breeders Club of Eastern Canada and the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association. The sponsor of the competition is Uplands Farm which is owned by Jennifer Rogers and the competition is in memory of her Grand Prix Hanoverian show jumper Diva.

The competition is open to three and four year olds who are in a registry recognized by the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses. The competition will be limited to the first 35 horses to be entered. An entry form and rules of the competition are available on the web at: www.hanoverianbreedersclub.com or at: www.canadianwarmbloods.com.

The three year old class will begin about 9:30-10:00am depending on the number

of entries. There will be a break for lunch which will be available at a reasonable cost at a lunch bar on the premises where the competition will be held. The Royal Canadian Riding Academy is on Davis Drive about five minutes east of Newmarket, Ontario, a map can be found at: www.rcra.ca.

The four year old class will begin at 1:00pm and the competition should be finished with our Champion and Reserve Champion announced by about 3:30-4pm.

This competition has attracted large audiences each year and many of the horses entered are for sale and the competition is becoming known as a great place to scout for the most talented 3 and 4 year old jumpers. Many of the past entries have gone on to do very well in the OHJA Jumper Development series for 4, 5 and 6 year olds. So serious breeders of jumpers should consider entering their 3 and 4 year olds as it is great experience for a young horse, the breeder gains independent information about the horse’s jumping talent and whether the horse is for sale or not it is great exposure.

The class prize money is 1st place $100, 2nd place $75 and 3rd place $50. The Hanoverian Breeders Club of Eastern Canada also offers $100 for the top placing Hanoverian.

If you have any questions contact Michael Boyd at (416) 239-0624 or by email at: [email protected].

by Jennette Coote As breeders and trainers we are frequently heard saying that there are no age appropriate classes for our young horse. Breeders are heard saying that riders only want the older horses that have shown experience, but it is so expensive to provide this for the horses. What if there were age appropriate classes available to 4 and 5 year olds in all disciplines, and they paid out money? There is! The Canadian Performance Futurity offers classes in dressage, hunter, jumper and eventing for 4 and 5 year old horses. These classes are offered in the Pacific zone, the Prairie zone and the Eastern zone.

The futurity started nominating horses born in 2002 whose first classes started in 2006. Breeders such as Sandra Donnelly of Alborak stables showed Surfer Girl to wins in both dressage and hunter in the first year, as

did Augustine Walsh in the Eastern division. Whirlwind II showed in dressage, hunter and jumper claiming 2 coolers in 2 years and money in every class. Ebay has won dressage for owner Heather Smith-Oberton in 2 zones as a 5 year old and the 4year old dressage as well. Many other horses crossed disciplines and took advantage of the all the classes offered. Some of them such as the 4 year old Ampere, who placed in the Prairie zone hunter and won the jumper was at his first show .

Trainer Sandra Donnelly says the program is not only valuable for the opportunity to win, but that it encourages early exploration of the abilities of the horse and gives focus and goals to early training.

Trainer Jennette Coote said that the classes were excellent preparation for the Stallion Performance Test. Training for them helped have Whirlwind ready to go to

the test and become Reserve Champion stallion. Trainer John Van den Bosch has had several winners since the programs inception. Every year bringing out young horses that are farm bred, he has found the program a good focus for preparation.

The Canadian Performance Futurity is open to all horses that were born in Canada and are Canadian registered. Nomination cost is $155. Prize money is paid out of nomination fees, and there are 2 bonus programs at this time. A Canadian Warmblood bonus and a Quebec Bred bonus offered by Hippique Quebec. The classes offered do not impact eligibility in EC hunter classes, and are offered at EC recognized shows with recognized judges. Join the futurity, have a goal for preparing you’re young horse and show the world the quality of your young horse.

SePtembeR 3 - natIonal StallIon lICenSInG toUR & b.C. Foal FUtURItY, hoSted at: JUnIPeR hIll, WInFIeld, JUSt eaSt oF keloWna.A huge thank you to the Interior members who came together to organize this venue in Lake Country (Winfield) to showcase the beautiful interior of our province to the National Team of Fritz von Blotnitz (Germany), Eve Mainwaring (Ontario), Jennette Coote (Stud Book Committee Member, Alberta) and provincial Senior Inspectors Marilyn Powell and Sandy Alexander.

The facility at Juniper Hills was magnificent and our host, Anna Hunt-Brinkley, most gracious in welcoming us to her beautiful farm high in the hills overlooking Okanagan Lake. A storm threatened to cancel our plan to use the wonderful grass field (pictured above) for the triangle, but fortunately it passed through in time. The footing was excellent with both the Stallion Licensing and the Foal Futurity entries able to strut their stuff on grass. Past National Director, Julie Pilon of Lumby was a very efficient ring steward and the schedule ran very smoothly. Thanks also to Uli Boss, Rob and others who assisted with the chute.

Of 4 stallions presented, 3 were licensed ... results and photographs below. Champion of the site was a tall growthy 2-year-old colt owned by Sam Schacke of Nadsila Ranch in Prince George. ‘Canadian Jazz’ was bred by Brenda Stewart of Alberta, with Sam having purchased his dam, the well known Falou, in-foal to the international Dutch dressage star Jazz. This colt showed lovely elasticity earning a ‘9’ from the team along with correct gaits, and fairly good scope and technique in the jumping chute.

Also licensed were the young stallions Weltmann D.C. & Fabian presented by their owners & breeders, Robert & Theresa Kirsch of Telkwa and Michael Rabe of Enderby respectively. Weltmann D.C. showed considerable talent for dressage as one would expect from a son of Weltmeyer, while Fabian was the jumping topper following in the footsteps of his Grand Prix jumping sire, Florian.

Local members prepared a veritable feast for lunch with a barbeque, all the fixing and more ‘goodies’ and fruit than could be consumed by all those in attendance. To Janice Tindall of Salmon Arm and her crew goes a most heartfelt thank you for all their work in preparation and set up of this marvelous spread. It is always pleasant to have a relaxing break to visit with other breeders and the judging commission over a great meal.

The Foal Futurity ran after the lunch break and was won by the Sagnol filly owned by Andre Sigmond of Armstrong. Look for a complete report and photographs of the Futurity on page 24.

It all started with a big bang for Fritz von Blottnitz and me! With all my back and forth E-mails and calls - “are we or are we not having licensing in Saskatchewan” somehow I got the dates of departure mixed and while Fritz arrived here on time – for me he came a day early and I said great – he can get over the jet lag a bit. Having a very nice leisurely dinner on Sept. 27th my cell rings and it is Vicky saying “where are you? You are supposed to be in Saskatoon right now”. I nearly fell off my chair and wailed into the phone with huge apologies! Calmly Vicky says “Don’t worry – we will find something. “Sure enough she calls to ask if we can be in Ottawa for a flight at 7 am the next morning. I promise we will. We had to get a ride leaving Brockville at 4:30 am. - not easy - but a good friend stepped up to the plate and we made it. We were met in Saskatoon and Ebon Stables and Elaine Partington greeted us with a lovely lunch and a golf cart for me, as I was suffering with a bad leg caused by a slipped cortisone shot to my back. This lovely facility had everything beautifully organized – the chute inside and the triangle outside worked well and in lovely weather we were able to pass 4 stallions for licensing in time to catch our flight to Calgary.

At the Calgary airport Colleen Embree-Jay joined us and we proceeded to Olds for the Stallion Performance Test and met Haaken Wahlman from Finland, our second international judge. To save on expenses we used donated transportation, courtesy of Katrina Van den Bosh and Doreen Kulscar, who both were busy volunteers throughout the test days as well. There were 2 stallions to be judged for licensing and with only 3 nominated for the SPT, we had time to do some judging for the Alberta Breeder’s show. Fritz and I did mare inspections and judged some broodmares, while Haaken judged the Riding Horse Test and Colleen was assigned to the foal and line classes. A 4th stallion joined the SPT arriving from a horse show and we were able to catch up on his missed phases at the spacious and well maintained facilities belonging to Olds College. As always Hendrik Gabel, our station master, had helped the candidates prepare for the event but commented that he had less to do as all the stallions were well up to the test in their training and turnout. Test riders, Albert Kley and Stephanie Koepke

scored the stallions for their dressage talents and for jumping we had Andrew Moore & Andrea Harris. After the scores were in it appeared all four stallions had attained their approval - much to the relief of their owners.

Alberta Hospitality being what it is – there were no restaurant dinners for us – MJ Farms, The Van den Boschs, and the Kulscars, fed us royally with Alberta beef, homegrown chicken and Saskatoon Berry pie, being part of the menus. Much friendship has developed over the years of the tour and is thus renewed annually.

Jennette, Fritz and I left Olds and flew to Kelowna where some stallions awaited us for licensing and several mares to be inspected. See report on next page. The Ontario Chapter had no stallions for licensing, so Fritz joined Ludwig Christman from the Hanovarian Society for a mare inspection for that association. I went home to Brockville for a day and then drove to St. Lazare, picking Fritz up on the way and meeting Chris Gould, to complete the judging group. The Quebec Team at the Beaulieu show facility was well organized and ready for us. Carlos Zimmer had the chute beautifully built and then removed for the triangle. Julie Cantin and Marie Arsenault and their team had the paperwork in order, a good lunch available and 6 stallions were presented for licensing.

Having been on the Licensing tour and the Stallion Performance Test since their inceptions – I can only congratulate all who are involved – the improvement in the quality of the stallions is visible as is their preparation and presentation as well as the organization at the test sites. Our breeders and our volunteers have all come a long way! See photos on opposite page.

The annual Fall Classic Breeders’ Sale, held on Oct 10 and 11 in Olds, Alberta, continued its successful 15-year run. High Selling Section A horse LaFair, consigned by Sharon and Bruce Telford, is heading to Quebec. This Landkoenig daughter, bred to Contendro, received the Sparks Innovations cooler for her new owners, Warmbloods P3R of St. Augustin-de-Desmaures, QC. High Selling Section B horse Caius II received the Anivac cooler for his new owner Zara Schultz of Saskatoon, SK. This tall, talented jumper by Carthago Sun I was consigned by U.N.I.T. Enterprises of Bowden.

New innovations at the sale, including streaming live video of the Saturday previews and the opportunity to bid on-line, increased the sale participation and number of registered bidders. The volunteers of the Alberta Chapter of the CWHBA ran a smooth, seamless sale despite a very cold weekend, and consignors brought an exceptional group of well-bred and schooled horses. Overall, averages decreased over high averages in past years, a reflection of the global economic downturn. As a result, many buyers bought exceptional bargains, but only 65% of the horses were sold. It was notable that no horses were sold to the US this year, however horses did sell to Quebec, BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The Sale’s Gala Evening had some very entertaining

events including an all-breed precision driving competition. This was narrowly won by the Hackney pony Kathmorr Duchess driven by Morris Helmig. Many CWHBA year end awards were presented and a demonstration of the material class was given by Danya, 4 yr old Material Champion and Déjà vu, 3 yr old Material Champion, both mares bred and owned by D & R Ranching. The highlight of the evening was the Calidostar Young Horse 3 Bars. This 3 Bars class for warmbloods under 7 was an incredible class that didn’t eliminate a horse for the first 5 rounds. 4 year old Aflame made the first mistake of the class at 1.50 meters. The class continued for 7 rounds and a height of 1.70 meters cleared by 6 year old CWHBA stallion Whirlwind II, ridden by 18 yr old Laura Iversen and owned by MJ Farms, and 6 year old imported Swiss Warmblood mare Carolina, ridden by Beda Wachter and owned by Wachter Farms and Roy Graham. The class was declared a tie for 1st place. This class exemplified the quality of warmblood breeding available in Alberta with 5 of the 7 entries bred and raised in the province.

The Alberta Chapter of the CWHBA is dedicated to the continued production of a quality warmblood sale, a sale that allows purchasers plenty of time to try out and view potential horses, and have confidence in the quality of the product.

During the Winter of 09 CWHBA embarked on a Strategic Planning exercise. Simply put, strategic planning determines where an organization is going over the next year or more, how it’s going to get there and how it’ll know if it got there or not. The focus of a strategic plan is usually on the entire organization, while the focus of a business plan is usually on a particular product, service or program.

Many of our members have participated in this exercise by completing a S.W.O.T series of questions, which were compiled and presented to the Board of Directors at the Orangeville, Annual General Meeting. S.W.O.T Analysis is used, as a tool for Strategic Planning and provides a snapshot of where an organization is at, S.W.O.T. stands for Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats.

An overview was presented to the Board and Membership at the AGM and following the AGM a committee was set up to do the work necessary to complete a Strategic Plan for CWHBA. The committee is made up of the membership from across the county and is led by Jackie Vandenbrink, as Chair and Jill Stephen, who is a consultant with extensive experience in Strategic Planning. Both Jackie and Jill are members and CWHBA breeders.

The Committee is meeting via e-mail and conference calls and held its first meeting on April 13. The SPC will have a draft document finished by the end of this year and will present to the Board during the January meeting and the final document will be presented at the Annual General Meeting in February.

The Committee has been working very hard on this process and are very eager to be doing this important work for the organization. This plan will provide a framework for CWHBA for the next number of years. This is a very exciting time for CWHBA. Look for the Strategic Plan document on the website and in the future in the Breeders Digest.

interstAllion seminAr, uPPsAlA sWeden MAY 30, 2008 by Chris Gould

The University of Uppsala hosted an Interstallion seminar -“Science and practice in sport horse breeding – achievements and future prospects of international collaboration”- in conjunction with the PHD thesis defence by Emma Thorén Hellsten. In total 83 people registered for the two day event. Nineteen different countries were represented including researchers, studbook staff and the press. CWHBA Chairman, Chris Gould participated as part of an international panel discussion “How could the sport horse breeding industry best benefit from research and what research should be prioritized in future”.

The purpose of Interstallion, founded in 1998, is to “Improve accessibility, understanding and comparability of sport horse information across countries and to improve horse breeding and horse sport globally”. In particular the committee’s aims are

to describe breeding objectives, testing procedures and genetic evaluation methods of Warmblood breeding organizations,

to recommend improvements of national genetic

evaluation systems;

to study methods of comparing genetic evaluations across countries.

A lot of work has been done in pursuing these aims, through cooperation and coordination with various universities and research groups. As the theme of the seminar indicated, there was an over view of the Interstallion history and accomplishments, followed by sharing of some of the more recent research. The seminar concluded with a discussion about the direction and value of future research to the breeding community.

There are two things that should be of particular interest to Canadian Warmblood breeders.

The genetic relatedness of Warmblood horses has been clearly established and confirmed by several studies. In Emma Thorén Hellsten’s words the “genetic connectedness of the studied populations were in level with or better than for dairy cattle and Icelandic horses”. This connection, while already well established, is increasing with the use of frozen semen.

The Equine Genome has been mapped and this has

opened up a whole new world of possibilities for research and breed improvement. Because of the close genetic relatedness of Canadian Warmbloods to others, we can benefit from and participate in, the exciting new work that is being done. We can expect to see significant progress in research on both health issues and performance characteristics in the near future.

The science that is done often seems remote from the practical aspects of breeding horses. Certainly the language and presentation may be difficult for the layman to assimilate, however the Interstallion Committee is to be complemented for focusing on issues that are relevant to breeders in seeking to find better and more accurate ways of creating and communicating Breeding Values for horses from around the world. These are important tools for breeders and we as breeders must take the time to utilize and support this work.

Detailed information about Interstallion and the proceedings of this seminar are available through the Interstallion web site http://www.biw.kuleuven.be/genlog/livgen/chgs_interstallion.html.

PIltoWn, IReland JUlY 17th - 19th, 2009On July 17th - 19th, 2009, the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association sent a Junior and Senior team to Ireland to compete in the WBFSH Young Breeders Championships. The Junior team competitors were Nicole Brandrick (AB), Laura Iversen (AB), and Darcia Barthalow (AB). The Senior team competitors were Veronique Arsenault (QC), Daniela Hahn (ON), and Cassandra Morrish (AB). Cindy Orr supported the two teams as chef d`equippe. The Championships were held at Ireland’s National Agricultural College (Kildalton College), in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny, and was co-hosted by Horse Sport Ireland and Teagasc.

In total, there were 17 teams competing and with the exception of Canada, all teams were from European studbooks. Competition was very tough; with point spreads of 60-100pts between first and last place teams. The competition format followed that of our National Qualifier held in March 2009. There were four components to the competition: a written exam, showmanship, judging loose gaits and free jumping, and judging conformation. There were additional mascot and horse preparation competitions as well. The Irish hosts also provided a number of events including hurling and Irish traditional dance demonstrations, and a wrap-up dance and dinner - all in the beautiful facilities of Kildalton College and Piltown.

The Young Breeders Competition has achieved tremendous milestones since the first competition was held in 2001. It provides all competitors with a truly invaluable experience and the opportunity to meet fellow competitors, establishing lifetime contacts. It is also paramount for promoting expectations of international standards and equipping young people with the future skills to excel in the breeding industry.

WBFsh Young Breeders World ChAmPionshiPs

CoPenhaGen, novembeR 3 and 4, 2009Reported by Chris Gould

The 2009 General Assembly of the WBFSH was hosted by the four Scandinavian stud books- Danish Warmblood, Swedish Warmblood, Finnish Warmblood and Norwegian Warmblood. The meeting and seminars took place in Copenhagen, but due to its proximity to southern Sweden and the Swedish National Stud at Flyinge, a gala horse showcase and dinner was hosted at that facility.

Jennette Coote and I attended on behalf of the CWHBA and were joined by participants from twenty countries representing nearly thirty stud books and organizations. The primary functions of information sharing and coordination of international breeding activity were well served in both the formal meetings and the informal discussions at the various social events. In conjunction with the two days of meetings, both pre and post tours were organized making a weeks worth of activities.

Here is a quick diary.

Monday November 2nd. Having arrived the evening before, I missed the first event, a trip to watch the famous Hubertusjagt drag hunt in Dyrehaven, however this day began at 7 am boarding a bus for Sweden and a visit to two stables. The first stop was to the stable of the son and daughter in law of our long time friend and supporter Ingvar Fedricson. Peder Fredricson and Lisen Bratt both former Olympic competitors for the Swedish National Team operate a show jumping training and sales barn in southern Sweden. It was very impressive to learn that the farm and new indoor arena had been financed through the sale of their former Olympic mounts. I am sure most people are familiar with the horse Casanova which Alison Firestone purchased from Lisen shortly after the 2000 Olympics.

The second stop was to the dressage stable of Jan Brink, Sweden’s most famous equestrian Olympian with his mount Briar. Both are now retired from international competition. It is impossible to describe this facility that Jan has built from scratch. It is truly a work of art. It is not due to size or opulence, but rather to the attention to detail and the high quality of the construction and materials. Having been there before in 2000, I could see the fruition of his dream right down to the perfect stone walls surrounding much of stable area and paddocks. Walls which he personally built over a period of three years with only one assistant. Of course the quality of the horses matched the environment. While warming up (the weather was rainy and cold) in his arena lounge we watched a number of very nice young dressage horses being ridden by his staff and students, including one from Canada.

Tuesday November 3rd. This was the first official day of the meetings. After registration and lunch the session opened with short powerpoint presentations by the four host associations. The Scandinavian associations work very well together in spite of the disparity in size. Finland and Norway are substantially smaller than the other two, comparable to the CWHBA, and therefore of special interest to us.

The seminar topic for this year was “The Breeding for an improved health, longevity and welfare in horses”. Over the next two days a number of speakers covered a variety of related issues from contagious disease, to radiographic soundness correlations with inspection results. The topic that struck home was about new legislated regulations in Denmark which control all aspects of horse care and stable management. This new legislation outlaws tie stalls and dictates the size of box stalls relative to the height of each horse, turnout paddocks, hours of turnout and a myriad of other regulations that will have a profound impact on the cost of owning a horse in Denmark. This level of regulation is typical of the EU, but this is the first

incursion into horse care. It is clearly a trend that the horse industry needs to be aware of and fully engaged in to prevent impractical and uneconomic measures being forced on us in the name of animal welfare.

The evening program featured a reception hosted by WBFSH Patroness, HRH Princess Benedikte of Denmark at Amalienborg, the winter palace residence of the Danish Royal Family. This was followed by a gala dinner at the nearby Hotel Admiral, where the annual stud book awards were presented. This year the KWPN replaced the Hanoverians as the leading Stud Book for both Jumpers (Hickstead of course contributing to this win) and Dresssage. The Irish Sport Horse were the leaders for Three Day Event.

Wednesday November 4th. The seminar program continued throughout most of the day and ended with a presentation by David Holmes of the FEI. He emphasized the ever increasing cooperation with the WBFSH and pointed out the importance of breeding in light of the strong growth being experienced by the FEI disciplines around the world. This was encouraging news given the current market.

At five o clock we loaded on buses to travel once more to Sweden. This time we were taken to the National Stud at Flyinge for a dinner and showcase horse show featuring horses from the four Scandinavian stud books. Due to extreme winds and wet conditions, horse trailers were not allowed to cross the bridge, so unfortunately many Danish horses did not make it. This amazing program that included many international riders and horses at all levels was certainly a highlight of the week. The connection between the stud books and their top riders is incredible. Jan Brink, Peter Erickson, Jens Fredricson, Maria Gretzer and others not only participated in the show, but are deeply involved in developing young stallions and young riders in Sweden. Since his retirement from international competition Jan Brink has joined the board of the Swedish Warmblood Association.

Page 11: 2009 Breeders Digest - Fall

The most poignant part of the evening was a presentation of Kyra Kirkland (chief dressage instructor at Flyinge in the 1990’s and of course former World Champion) and six of her former students, all now international riders and medal winners. These riders, national team members from England, Denmark, Holland and Sweden, travelled with their Grand Prix horses all the way to Flyinge for this special event. It was an incredible evening.

Thursday November 5th. The General Assembly started first thing Thursday morning. Following the President’s overview of the year, reports were received from the different departments covering international cooperation, membership, Young Horse Championships, etc. The Audit Committee endorsement of the financial statements and budget was presented. Following approval of the budget the annual plan for the next year was presented and approved.

Board elections are rotated, so in 2009 Thomas Nissen (Holst) and Siem Korver (KWPN) were elected. The entire audit committee is voted on annually and I was re-elected along with Ingvar Fredricson, Håkon Wahlman, Jacques Vandenberghe, and Werner Schade. At this point there are not many controversial issues before the WBFSH, however two issues continue to surface regarding membership. One is the relationship and rights of original stud books relative to membership in the WBFSH of foreign studs books of the same breed. This year the question came to the fore regarding the Luistano registry in Brazil, which is not recognized by the Association of origin in Portugal. The question is now under examination by the Board.

The other, raised this year by the Argentinian Stud Book, concerns the inspection and registration by foreign stud books outside of their jurisdiction. In this case European stud books coming to Argentina and inspecting and registering horses which would normally fall under the legal and legislated jurisdiction of the Argentinian stud book. The position of the WBFSH is that foreign stud books must act within the law of the country. Since each country has different legislated requirements this can be confusing. The United States is the best example of a country where there is no applicable legislation. Consequently it is dominated by foreign stud books which compete freely within its borders. Argentina on the other hand, like many countries has legislation that requires government recognition of stud books operating within the country. There is some ambiguity therefore about the status of papers issued by a foreign association.

The European stud books, for the most part, are historically well established within their jurisdictions so that the EU open market policy does not cause significant problems for the major stud books. This coupled with the fact that their largest export market, the USA is a wide open playing field encourages the major stud books to take the view that such competition is good and appropriate, regardless of the local conditions.

2009 bC ChaPteR Foal FUtURItYSeptember 3, Juniper Hill, Lake Country (Winfield)

The 2009 BC Chapter Foal Futurity was held in conjunction with the National Stallion Licensing Tour at Juniper Hill, following the Stallion Licensing.

A big thank you to those owners who brought out their beautiful foals to participate in this annual event held one in each province. Sires of these foals were nominated in 2008 by donating a breeding to the 2008 Stallion Service Auction. All foals of 2009 by nominated stallions were eligible to compete. Successful bidders on the 2008 Stallion Service Auction receive a complimentary nomination for their foal as does the stallion owner for each breeding donated.

Champion of the 2009 BC Foal Futurity was a very elegant filly by the Oldenburg stallion Sagnol out of the Canadian Warmblood mare Phedra, by Pik Kaiser. Saphira, owned and bred by Andre Sigmond of Armstrong, was the oldest foal of the 6 entered. She scored a strong 8.25 with her good type and conformation. Andre was also the breeder of Saphira’s dam, Phedra, who scored premium score of 7.33 from the national team. Phedra’s dam is the approved TB mare, Satin Shuffle. Congratulations!

Second place was awarded to another Sagnol filly, this time the youngest presented, who showed very strong Swing & Elasticity with amazing shoulder freedom. Fritz von Blotnitz declared, ‘her head is a 10’. Saxony, is out of Delphi, by Deutschmeister. Owners/breeders, Bill & Lynn Blake of Kamloops , are strong supporters of the association and also had great success for the 2nd year in a row in the Canadian Performance Futurity with their Hunter entry.

In 3rd place was the Tramino colt Tolkein, out of Guinevere by Gargoyle (Goodwill) owned and bred by Michelle Curcio of Red Deer, AB and shown by her mother, Christine Curcio of Winfield. The team noted this was a strong colt with good conformation and type. Of Tolkein’s dam, Fritz von Blotnitz commented to the team and owners that ‘this is a beautiful warmblood mare of strong type’.

Interestingly, only 1.5 marks separated the top 3 foals.

mane eventThe CWHBA was out promoting our warmblood breeders interests at the Mane Event in British Columbia. BC Chapter President Michael Rabe and inspection judge and Chapter Vice President, Sandy Alexander promoted the organization by answering questions and making literature available to members and interested public alike on everything from the online foal auction to stallion licensing. And what better way to promote our breeding than to actually bring in horses to demonstrate the quality of Canadian Warmbloods.

Friday and Sunday, the CWHBA presided for an hour in the demonstration ring with an excellent and comprehensive running commentary and question and answer period from industry professional Sandy Alexander. Presented before the audiences, in hand then loose, showing conformation and gaits was the Sagnol filly, Saxony, beside her dam Delphi by Deutschmeister. They were presented by their owners Bill and Lynn Blake, which gave the audience an appreciation of the importance of quality mares producing quality foals on a par with the best anywhere on the globe, when paired with a complimentary stallion, as can be found right here in Canada. Michael Rabe presented the three year old

licensed stallion, Fabian (Florian x Bella II / Bonaparte). Fabian gave two demonstrations through the free jumping chute showing gaits, jumping ability and the presence of mind that our organization is looking for in siring the next generation. Next was a foundation stallion, Hanoverian, Raffaello (Raphael/ Foxhunter/Don Juan) who represented the value of imported stock that our Canadian Warmblood breeding today is based on and still incorporates. Synergy Sporthorses’ Raffaello was presented under dressage tack warming up and showing gaits by both amateur riders Doris Doudet and Diane Dusevic. He was then stripped in front of the audience to give not only an impression of the conformation of an internationally approved stallion but also of the good character we look for in our breeding stock. He was then tacked up in a hunter saddle and professional Lindsay Beadle showed the versatility and jumping ability we breed for by demonstrating a completely different frame suitable for showing hunter and doing some demonstration fences.

Our breeders have made much progress in producing wonderful horses and opportunities such as these are how we get the public familiar with the name, brand and availability of great Canadian Warmblood bred prospects. My name is Lisa Paulson and it was my first time at the Mane Event. I volunteered to assist in the

booth and proudly volunteered our stallion Raffaello. I encourage breeders to step up and work together to support our organizations and promote warmblood sport horse breeding in Canada.

The BC Chapter executive decided to present Carole Hobbins with a special gift for the years of fabulous work she has done organizing inspections on Vancouver Is. Carole has retired form the position and had this to say…

2009 CanadIan YoUnG event hoRSe ChamPIonShIPSThe 2009 Canadian Young Event Horse Championships was held On September 7, 2009 at Equus 3D in Orangeville Ontario. This hotly contested championship was interesting with Olympic and Pan American riders in the saddle and some very nice talented young horses. Qualifying results obtained at events held at Glen Oro, Woodwind, Wits End 1, & Wits End 11, qualified for the Championships.

The inaugural Future event horse for Three-Year Olds shown in hand using the triangle inspection format showed that we have something to look forward to with some very well put together up and comers. Nine horses competed to qualify.

Apple Prince, CWHBA ON[CAN]6642-06 G, (Autograph x Jesse White Bread/ Bold Revue), owned by Stefanie Bruseme, bred by Ainstable Farm and handled by Sarah Holmes, took 2nd place.

The Five-Year Olds had ten horses competing to qualify

In Third place was Quizz D’Orange, CWHBA, Illian De Taute x Wenalla ( full sister to the CWHBA approved stallion P.S. I love You). Owned and bred by Ruth Armstrong and ridden by Ruth Armstrong

Armstrong Farm & Ruth Armstrong’s breeding programme produced the top 5 year old CWHBA award and also the over all year end champion top 5 year old young event horse: Quizz D’Orange who has subsequently been sold south of the border.

The Open Division

Champion was Mala Noche an impressive grey CSHA Trakehner gelding by Helling out of Alma Alta. Owned by Ruth Armstrong bred by Charlotte Shickendanz and ridden by Ruth Armstrong. Mala Noche was the CSHA breed award winner and also the overall highpoint score of the day and ! Mala Noche is also the overall year end champion of the open Young Event horse

The Canadian Young Event Horse series is continuing to grow and Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association, Ontario Chapter is along with the Canadian Sport Horse Ontario Chapter very excited to sponsor, promote and participate in this event to highlight young talented Canadian bred horses, who have a future in Eventing!

The popularity of the Future young event horse for 3 year olds has proven to be overwhelmingly successful and subsequently the 2010 series will include a 2 year old future event horse to be judged under the same criteria as the 3 year olds. Breeders were thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase and educate their young stock with out breaking the bank and in a none threatening or overwhelming environment.

SaSkatCheWan WaRmblood ShoWCaSe The Saskatchewan Chapter of the CWHBA kicked off the year with a fabulous BBQ in May that brought together people from all over the Province and even from Alberta. It was a great get together and the Dessert Auction was not only fun and delicicous, but hot bidding went on, with Siegfried Bansch the top bidder. Great supporters also provided lots of items for draws and to auction. So the funding raising portion of the pie was terrific.

A seminar was presented by Val Sanford on the new French evaluation system for movement, and Charmaine Bergman presented the APA powerpoint update. There were lots of requests for the Chapter to host this get together in 2010, so imagine the genius hosts, Val Sanford, Wayne Ward, Risha Hughes and Lindsay Hansen will gather their strength and provide a fund event again.

The annual Warmblood Showcase with the Foal Futurity, Riding Horse Test and Mare Evaluations was held August 7-9th at Ebon Stables. The Mid Summer Masters Horse show was also held that weekend at Ebon, and the Warmblood Material Hunter and Jumper divisions were included in their prize list and schedule.

With multiple events at one venue, the riders, trainers and audience had lots to see, the one thing that made it a complicated weekend was the weather! I believe that Ebon must have invented a squeegee to get the water out of the rings, because every class did run and

all was finished by late Sunday evening. Yes, it was late running….but the gumboots were put away Sunday, and everyone probably has lovely feet! The Chute jumping Saturday night in the indoor was packed!!!

Thank You Ebon Stables for all your extra efforts for all of the competitors, warmblood and Mid Summers, to ensure the show went on, and everyone was looked after, in a safe and fun manner.

The Provincial AGM (Jan 16) and the National AGM (February 19-21) will be held in Saskatoon, so the Saskatchewan Chapter will continue to be busy over the Winter.
