Ben WhitesideStaff Writer
James Bond suffered terribly for the
first half of this decade, but with 2006’s
“Casino Royale,” Daniel Craig and direc-
tor Martin Campbell (who also helmed
1995’s “GoldenEye”) multi-handedly
revived the writhing franchise. It was a
major financial and critical success, but
no matter your stance, everybody
agreed the film was something com-
pletely different for the Bond universe.
Gone were the campy, over-the-top vil-
lains, underground volcano hideouts
and witty one-liners spoofed in the
“Austin Powers” movies. “Casino
Royale” was the grittiest, most raw and
most real Bond yet, and it depicted the
cast as human beings who breathed,
bled, felt and loved. Ultimately, “Casino
Royale” picked Bond up from the
“Moonraker” and put him in our back-
yard.
The newest Bond film, “Quantum of
Solace,” breaks a few rules itself, but
this time the changes concern the story
more than the style. It is a sequel (a first
for the series) to “Casino Royale,” start-
ing just hours after the last one left off.
Indeed, the film’s universe is congruent
with that of “Casino Royale.” Daniel
Craig is still cool and dangerous, and
the women are still classy, smoldering
and willing, but this time Bond isn’t
afforded the luxury of being able to sit
back for a minute and just be Bond.
Still, its rejection of Bond traditions
isn’t what makes it a bad film — that can
be attributed to the fact that it discards
good storytelling techniques altogether.
It’s strange that director Marc Forster
(“Finding Neverland,” “Stranger Than
Fiction”), who has made such thought-
ful and intimate films, would produce
the most action-packed, butt-kicking
007 yet. There are no less than three
action set-pieces before any sort of char-
acter development is given a chance to
take place. The action is solid, sure, but
Bond is not an action hero. Audiences
love these movies for the persona at
least as much as the action, and here
that persona is reduced to a man on a
mission to get revenge, and that’s basi-
cally it. Someone needs to make sure
the next director knows the difference
between Bond and Bourne.
A good action sequence engages the
physical senses, which those in
“Quantum” undoubtedly do. What
makes one great, however, is if it also
engages your emotions. The people
behind “Casino Royale” knew this, but
Forster assumes that the emotionally
charged events of the last half-hour of
that film extend through to his and even
sustain it throughout its one hour and
forty-six minutes. He was wrong; this is
Bond at his most cold, humorless and
heartless. There’s nothing on the line
during the action scenes — no sense of
a human element — just a robotic
killing machine that you know is going
to win in the end.
The franchise underwent a much-
needed makeover in 2006, which hacked
away what was unnecessary and
replaced it with something contempo-
rary and vital. In 2008, they’ve taken the
surgery too far. In an effort to make
something sleek and attractive, Forster
has pushed and pulled so much that all
the personality and charm — what
made 007 special to begin with — is all
but gone.
Chill out, Bond. Order a drink.
New Bond flick lacks personality

Junot Diaz reaches out tonerds across the literary worldwith his interesting and revealingbook “The Brief Wondrous Lifeof Oscar Wao.”
Diaz captures his audienceand makes his point before cor-dially introducing the reader tothe very unique Oscar, whoquotes the comic series“Fantastic Four.” “Of whatimport are brief, nameless lives… to Galactus?” Maybe such alife is not significant to Galactus, but Oscar’s story definitelybreaks ground for nerds andsuperstitious believers every-where.
Ironically, the story’s backboneis the history of Oscar’s lineage, with his endless pursuit of reallove accessorizing a much deep-er narrative about legends, cursesand a tyrannical dictator. Diazweaves substantive issuesthroughout this story along witha colorful usage of Spanish, creat-ing a very unique work of art —appropriate to the likeness ofOscar.
Members of the accursedCabral family have been drivenfrom the Dominican Republic bythe suggested supernatural dicta-tor, Trujillo, time and again. Loveseems to be the damning compo-nent for the family, yet Oscardedicates his life, aside frombeing consumed in the science-fiction realm, to finding true love.Overweight and underestimated, women are the thorn in Oscar’sside. Lola, Oscar’s rebellious anddevastatingly beautiful sister, becomes his best friend and con-
fidant after the two siblings wereforced to endure childhood withtheir self-indulgent mother, Beli, whose love was nothing short ofsuffocating.
Yunior narrates the majority ofthe story, frequently lapsing inand out from unbiased narratorto street smart spoken-wordartist. His first-hand account asOscar’s once-upon-a-time room-mate and Lola’s irresponsiblelover is heartbreakingly honest, providing some comedic relief atjust the right times. Diaz strategi-cally tells this story piece by dis-tressing piece. The fragmentedstoryline offers explanationsessential to the Cabral’s familyhistory, but much of the informa-tion is withheld from the readeruntil the last one hundred pagesof the story. Diaz’s use of fore-shadowing could be a deliberateattempt to imitate the ominousfuku curse that is constantly cast-ing a shadow on the lives of theCabrals.
Still the question remains:What makes Oscar’s life won-drous? Well, maybe it’s not. Butmaybe Oscar is the incarnationof bullied love, always the targetof worldly constraints. This sci-ence-fiction nerd is a hero in hisown right. A hero for thosewhose love is forgotten or over-shadowed, and Oscar blatantlydisregards the superstitious curs-es that have kept his family inchains for years. Oscar is a saviorof love for his family and alterna-tive society. Diaz uses Oscar toconvey the notion that even themost desolate love can prevail, and, when it doesn’t, life maylose its meaning.
